Dear WJA Community,

The story of the Washington Jesuit Academy is over 20 years in the making, and it is just beginning.

Two decades of applying a successful education model and transforming the lives of our students and families is momentous. This special time warrants a pause to reflect on Today, Tomorrow, and Forever at the Washington Jesuit Academy.

Every chapter of our story is a masterful creation, first authored by the individuals who joined together over 20 years ago and asked “What more can we do?” Our students, teachers, families, alumni, benefactors, and the entire community give true meaning to Today, Tomorrow, and Forever.

Our story is their story.

Each student contributes unique gifts, perspective, and energy and we educate and care for them accordingly. Our teachers are experts at their craft. They hold students to a high standard and give them every tool to pursue a lifetime of success. Our families understand and share our commitment to their sons’ education and form a partnership with us to best support their students.

Our alumni return to Varnum Street and share not only their stories of success and perseverance, but visit with former teachers, bond with current students, and take comfort in the feelings of safety and community that emanate from every classroom and hallway.

Our story persists because of the philanthropic spirit of our benefactors who understand the transformative nature of our students’ experiences and wholeheartedly believe in our Today, Tomorrow, and Forever. Your investment in students today creates leaders of tomorrow and forges a legacy for the Academy and all who are educated here, forever.

We remain humbled and deeply appreciative for our benefactors’ support, without which, we would be sharing a vastly different story. Thank you to all those who have invested in WJA by way of capital, time, resources, expertise, and all the intangible ways that we know you are supporting our mission.

The impact of our community’s generosity will be detailed in this publication, as we turn the pages through over two decades of support for the Washington Jesuit Academy and celebrate all who are part of our Today, Tomorrow, and Forever. Thank you for being a part of our story. There is much more to come!

Dear Friends,

The WJA community is made up of thousands of people who are all connected by a shared belief. That belief is in the mission of the Washington Jesuit Academy. Benefactors, parents and guardians, faculty, alums, staff, and board members—each one a believer in the impact that WJA has on deserving young men in the DC area.

Throughout this Investors Report we will reflect on the past year but intertwined are the stories of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. As we look to the future of the Academy, it is important to remember our roots, how far we have come over the past 20 years, and the supporters whose gifts allow WJA to continue to build on the past two decades as we grow into the next. WJA depends on the philanthropy of individuals and foundations to do what it does. In the absence of other funding, this generosity is critical. We thank you for your support and for your continued belief in the Washington Jesuit Academy.

7
Sincerely,

From the Ground Up

Twenty years ago, a group of dedicated Jesuits and laypeople were intent on improving the lives of historically underserved young men in Washington, D.C. Mark Tuohey, the Washington Jesuit Academy (WJA)’s first board chair, was among these individuals. Tuohey, who served on the board at Gonzaga College High School, along with key individuals in the Georgetown Preparatory School and Georgetown University community, saw a great need for a Jesuit-influenced middle school. Their goal was to provide a Jesuit education to students who were deserving and capable but did not have the financial means of their peers.

They set out to execute a unique education model that was to be both academically rigorous and reflect the Ignatian ideal of cura personalis, to care for every individual as a whole. Their goal was to prepare these young men for high school and college, and empower them with the skills and tools to be successful for a lifetime.

Bill Whitaker served as the Academy’s first President, and together, they partnered with the city to lease a property and assemble a faculty. They worked closely with the Jesuit community, corporate connections, and individuals to establish a donor base. Those who supported WJA in its early stages invested in an idea, with no guarantee of success. They were drawn to the core elements of WJA’s model and hoped that it would produce a tangible impact on the students and families they were serving.

Two years following its inception, WJA secured its permanent home at 900 Varnum Street NE. The decision to purchase this property ensured permanence, safety, and capacity for growth. What began as a simple property with converted classroom and office space is now a home to 131 students, and numerous teachers and faculty who enjoy the benefit of:

• Converted classrooms and teacher workspace

• The “Well,” which includes our cafeteria and technology center

• Family Center

• Writing Center

• Wellness Center, supported by 3 full-time counselors

• Fully equipped fitness center

• Turf Field

• A home away from home

The acquisition and transformation of our space reflects not just the immense growth of the Academy, but the impact of the gifts of our benefactors that have enhanced our students’ experiences for 20 years. While WJA was originally to serve as a middle school, we now educate students in the fourth and fifth grade as well. This academic year, our fourth-grade class doubled in size. As our ability to serve a greater number of students increases, so does our impact, all of which would not be possible without our generous community of friends and benefactors.

9
“Everyone involved at the beginning is proud of how the school has prospered and improved, and the young men are the beneficiaries.”
–Mark Tuohey
“We understood that if we could walk together and be bold and respond to the challenges that were in front of us every single day in this city, that we would do God’s work in many ways.”
–Bill Whitaker

Generational Impact

The advancement of this institution would not be possible without sustained support. The Washington Jesuit Academy grew from an idea to a household name. As Mark Tuohey and others provided a foundation on which the Academy could grow, generations following will be instrumental in securing our future.

Jody Tuohey began with the Washington Jesuit Academy in August 2022, but her admiration for WJA dates back 20 years, through her fatherin-law, Mark Tuohey, and other individuals connected to WJA. Jody, a graduate of the University of Virginia, holds a Master of Teaching with a focus on Special Education. She was drawn to the mission of the Academy in its earliest days. While she wanted to pursue an opportunity at WJA, her focus was on raising a family. Jody served in several part-time positions at various schools, but always knew she wanted to make her way to WJA.

Two decades later, educating students at the Washington Jesuit Academy remained a priority. In August of 2022, a position for a Learning Specialist became available. Jody’s experience, passion for our mission, and dedication to supporting students with diverse learning needs made her a perfect fit. She now serves as a Learning Specialist and works with students who benefit from additional learning support in Reading and Math.

Investment in the Washington Jesuit Academy continues in the Carroccio Family. Peter Carroccio, one of WJA’s original board members, sponsored Jabari Greenwood (WJA Class of 2011). Greenwood, who remained connected with Carroccio, graduated from Towson University in 2019 and now works for Rockrose Development Corporation, which is a subsidiary of the company where Carroccio serves as Managing Principal.

Today, Matt Carroccio, his spouse, as well as Matt’s brothers and their spouses, sponsor a fifth-grade student. Matt first learned of WJA when news of its formation was shared throughout the Gonzaga College High School community. Through his connection, Matt and his brothers learned of an opportunity to sponsor a student. They have been investing in students’ education at WJA ever since. The depth and continuation of the Carroccio Family’s involvement has not been by obligation, but by choice and recognition of the unique education model at WJA. From Matt’s service on WJA’s Board, he notes that, “What WJA has done has proven that we have the ability to give [students] the education they need to have the opportunity to live great lives.”

As we enter the next 20 years, Matt Carroccio, like many others, understands the importance of ensuring the Academy’s longevity. When asked how we can build upon this foundation, Matt remarks one word—“family.” Matt hopes that his children will be the next generation of supporters of the Washington Jesuit Academy.

10
“The foundation is here for WJA to be here forever.”
–Matt Carroccio
Carolyn and Matt Carroccio, Christopher Carroccio, and their student Dilan (Grade 5) at the Spring 2022 Sponsor Luncheon. Jody Tuohey and Moussa (Grade 4).

Investment in our students extends far beyond their five years on 900 Varnum Street. Jerry File’s involvement in the Washington Jesuit Academy is a perfect example of this. File learned of the Washington Jesuit Academy two decades ago, through his acquaintance with WJA Founder Bill Whitaker and Father Henry Haske. File greatly admired both individuals, and when asked to be involved in WJA, he was delighted to serve. File and his late wife, Debbie, have sponsored a WJA student since the school’s founding. As a sponsor, he makes an intentional effort to correspond with and support his students. The File’s first student, Blair Meek, currently serves in administration as an instructional coach at SEED Public Charter School in Southeast Washington. He recounts the thoughtful postcards and multiple written notes that the Files exchanged with him since he graduated from the Academy in 2006. Most recently, Meek and his fiancé attended WJA’s 20th Anniversary Gala as guests of File.

File, who currently sponsors a 6th grade student, looks forward to continuing to maintain meaningful relationships with his students.

Mark Tuohey, Peter Carroccio, Jerry File, and all those involved since the beginning are to credit for WJA’s early reputation for providing a distinct educational experience. We recognize and admire the continuation of support and involvement that is critical to ensuring that WJA can continue to serve our students, alumni, and families for generations to come.

The Next Chapter

Marcus Washington, President of the Washington Jesuit Academy, first came to WJA with the intent of staying for a few years. He’s been here for thirteen. Washington states that, “There is an addictive element to working at WJA.” As our students succeed, we are driven to do even more to expand and enhance the impact that we have on their lives. As the new President of the Washington Jesuit Academy, Washington is fueled by the pursuit of impacting more students, more families, and more alumni. While we recognize and celebrate the success of the Academy for the past two decades, Washington’s goal is to position the Academy for optimal success for the next two decades, and beyond.

WJA is in constant pursuit of improvement and identifying how we can better serve our community and the world. In 2019, WJA partnered with Bellwether Education, a non-profit education administration group that works with education organizations to amplify their impact. Bellwether conducted a thorough evaluation of WJA’s impact on students and capacity for greater impact in the coming years. While much of the evaluation results validated our education model and approach, Bellwether delivered several recommendations for our pursuit of growth. Washington remarks that, “The fight is never over… there is always more to be done.” Washington will focus on continuing to forge strong relationships with those connected to WJA as well as expanding our community to include the next generation of benefactors

“A lot of our students love to come back and talk about how successful they are […] They love to come back and say ‘Listen, this is hard. This is what I went through. Thank you for helping me through all of it.’ ”

ALUMNI COUNCIL

The Washington Jesuit Academy Alumni Council was founded in 2019 and serves as a formal point of connection among our graduates and students. Members of the council are distinctly involved with WJA as they seek to give back to our community, encourage fellow graduates and current students to explore and bond over their experiences, and foster healthy, uplifting relationships among all who have walked our halls.

Funding Excellence

In fiscal year 2022, WJA’s financial results support our continued educational funding model which is distinct in its reliance on philanthropic activity versus government funding or collecting tuition. Revenue procurement and cost management allows WJA to fulfill our mission to provide a high-quality education to young men from low-income communities. We provide a wide array of services and comprehensive support to our students and an increasing number of alumni. Our generous donors are to thank for our ability to serve our students from fourth grade to life.

SOURCES:

The differentiating factor for WJA is philanthropic activity, generating 94% of our revenue and showcasing the power of partnering with generous donors for our tuition-free education.

USES:

WJA’s education model drives our investments in the students and their unparalleled experience.

The success of our WJA Forward Campaign has been amplified by our longstanding partnership with the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation. Through a $6.25 million matching funds challenge, the Clark Foundation has made a transformational investment in the Washington Jesuit Academy, allowing us to sustain and scale our successful model so we can continue to provide life-changing educational opportunities to our students and alumni.

“We are so grateful to the Clark Foundation for believing in our vision for WJA. The Clark Foundation’s investment has allowed us to accelerate our expansion plan and has inspired more people in our community to join our work.”

–Bill Whitaker, Founder

WJA Forward

As we look forward to the Washington Jesuit Academy’s next 20 years and beyond, we know that fulfilling our lifetime commitment to our students and alumni requires continuous investment in the defining elements of the WJA experience. We are proud to share that WJA has secured an initial investment of $25 million to ensure we can advance our mission and expand our impact for years to come.

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our WJA Forward Campaign donors, we are maximizing our impact today by increasing our enrollment. We are strengthening our capacity for tomorrow by expanding and enhancing our programming. As we work to achieve our strategic goals, we are positioning WJA for forever success by bolstering our endowment.

With sincere gratitude, we recognize those who have supported this critical initiative to help WJA serve more students, alumni, and families. Thank you for helping us empower our students and alumni to succeed today, tomorrow, and forever.

Philanthropic gifts to the Washington Jesuit Academy allow us to meet the evolving needs of our community. Our students, who are powerful in their potential, thrive because of the multidimensional approach of WJA and those who support our mission. Several events and initiatives during the 2021-2022 year demonstrated the breadth of support for WJA, such as the Carr Cares Benefit Concert, our annual Sponsor Luncheon, the WJA Open, and our “20 in 20” campaign, a 20-day initiative raising $20,000.

Collectively, the fiscal year ending June 30, 2022 brought:

The Varnum Society was founded in 2021 and recognizes the generosity of donors who have supported the Washington Jesuit Academy through Annual Fund Gifts of $1,000 or more. The Varnum Society was named after WJA’s location on Varnum Street and the sense of community, family, and shared mission felt among all those connected with the Academy.

These benefactors align their passions with the Academy’s priorities, generating an incredible impact across WJA. We acknowledge these individuals and families who support our mission through endowments.

ANONYMOUS SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT

The donor is passionate about education and considered funding the start-up of a school to provide better educational opportunities for students. When he was introduced to the Washington Jesuit Academy, he realized that what he was dreaming of already existed with a successful track record. As a result, he and his family chose to endow a scholarship.

THE ANBRYCE SCHOLARSHIP

Bea and Tony Welters grew up in difficult circumstances and after having built a successful business, they made it their mission to extend a helping hand to others in need. They have established a summer camp, after-school and Saturday leadership program, and extensive support programs at the college level. Their AnBryce Scholarship supports WJA students who have participated in their summer camp, after-school, or any of their foundation’s programs.

THE BERNASEK FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP

In celebration of the Washington Jesuit Academy’s past success and bright future in providing a values-oriented education for students, Cathy and Brian Bernasek chose to endow a scholarship in 2015.

THE BRODNIK SCHOLARSHIP

As longtime student sponsors at the Washington Jesuit Academy, Joan and Tim Brodnik chose to make their investment permanent by endowing a scholarship in 2007.

CLAIRE Z. CAREY, PH.D. FACULTY ENDOWMENT FUND

When the Washington Jesuit Academy was formed, the MBNA Foundation and its founder Charlie Cawley chose to establish an endowment fund for faculty salaries in honor of Claire Z. Carey, a former dean of Georgetown College at Georgetown University.

THE CLARK CHARITABLE FOUNDATION ENDOWMENT

At the direction of Courtney and Scott Pastrick, having witnessed first-hand WJA’s growth toward stability and sustainability, the Clark Charitable Foundation established the endowment to honor WJA’s countless benefactors and to inspire future confidence and investment in the mission of the Academy.

THE

GERMAN ORPHAN HOME OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA ENDOWMENT

FUND

This fund was established to provide support for science, art, and music programs at the Washington Jesuit Academy.

CECILIA H. GONZALEZ AND STEPHEN M. FOSTER SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT FUND

Howrey LLP and Stephen Foster, both long-time student sponsors at WJA, established this endowment fund in memory of Stephen’s beloved wife and Howrey partner, Cecilia H. Gonzalez.

THE CIVITAS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP FUND

John Quigley has come to see education as key to an individual’s growth and advancement. He is a graduate of Georgetown University, where he was a Baker Scholar, and thereafter received degrees from Stanford and Columbia. He is committed to providing scholarship aid to those with a keen desire to pursue their education. John is delighted to see WJA have as a cornerstone a commitment to the Jesuit ideal of cura personalis.
