THE WIXON EXPERIENCE

Looking Back

Thirty years goes by in the blink of an eye, and yet a lot has happened in that time. While flipping through old scrapbooks, we can all get a chuckle out of dated hair styles, fashions, and décor. But there’s a story behind all of those pictures. Reminiscing with Lorri, one of our employees from the very beginning, we laughed over the display trees full of herringbone and rope chains, selling black hills gold and charms, but that’s who we were. We came from very small towns in Minnesota. Neither of our families had any semblance of wealth, but we learned the value of hard work at an early age. Our families instilled in us the morals and values that we used to build our business, along with a lot of sweat equity and sleepless nights. We are proud of our past, and yes, we started with Seiko watches. We did our best with what we had and continued to dream. We remember being at a gemstone show in the mid-to-late 90’s and thinking how nice it would be to buy whatever gems we wanted for the store just because we loved them. Somewhere along the way it happened and we’ve been living our dream ever since. We’re now fortunate to select the most amazing gems, offer the very best watch brands, engage in meaningful relationships with our clients and assemble the best staff in the country. We are proud of where we came from and humbled by our success. It is with great gratitude that we thank you—our clients—for allowing us to grow and strive to be better on our 30 year journey. As Lorri remarked, “We weren’t as sophisticated back then, but we worked hard and had a lot of fun.” We are still working hard and having more fun than ever, but we’re doing it with a little more pizazz. Another 30 years from now, our children will point to our pictures, snicker and say, “Look at Mom’s clothes” or “Check out Dad’s hair” (poor example). And hopefully, they too will remember the story. We are thrilled to bring you our very best in 30 years. Grab a glass of wine, sit back and celebrate the pages with us. Cheers!

THE WIXON EXPERIENCE

Celebrating our 30th anniversary is a milestone for us in many ways. Who we were 30 years ago is vastly different than the store we are today. Our vision, however, remains the same—to provide our clients with an unmatched level of service, quality and design. Fulfilling this vision comes from the immense passion our team at has for what we do. It ignites us and has propelled us to be the very best for ourselves and our clients. As we reflect on the last 30 years, we feel honored to have been a part of our client’s most important moments and milestones. We believe that what we offer is much greater than a gift. Diamonds, gemstones and timepieces are designed to represent feelings and memories, serving as a tangible expression of love and accomplishment.

EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS Wixon Jewelers has come a long way since Dan Wixon first opened its doors in 1988 because his relentless commitment to exceeding expectations has always remained a top priority. Back then, our store was smaller, our selection was a bit more sparse and our staff consisted of only four employees. Our evolution over the years is largely due to Dan and Hope’s dedication to providing unparalleled service. Dan spent many of

his younger years observing his father run his small family-owned butcher business. His father’s own commitment to superior service left a lasting impression on Dan and laid the foundation for his own future business plans. The experience that we offer our clients is all encompassing. It’s more than a purchase; it’s a commitment to a relationship on all levels. There are many traits we look for in our team, but what really sets them apart is that they are true professionals that are warm, authentic and genuinely care. Our team of experts is non-commissioned based, which allows them to get to know the real wants and needs of our clients, rather than simply making a quick sale. The milestones and occasions our clients celebrate deserve the very best, and it’s our mission to ensure those expectations are met at every level. THE WIXON EXPERIENCE

THE WIXON EXPERIENCE

CELEBRATING THE MOMENT For us, jewelry is much more than simply something that sparkles. It is a feeling, a moment and a way to symbolize all the things that we sometimes struggle to say. Our jewelry is designed to leave a legacy and last a lifetime, a real representation of love and commitment. Engagements, anniversaries, birthdays, personal successes and promotions are only a few of life’s big moments that deserve to be celebrated in an extraordinary way. Through building genuine and lasting relationships with our clients, we are able to assist them in elevating the occasion by offering recommendations that are simply perfect from the beginning. Although memories may fade, jewelry is real, tangible, and a lasting way to mark the moment in a major way for years to come. We believe in making memories and celebrating moments one perfect piece at a time.

QUALITY IS TIMELESS

“

It is a feeling, a moment and a way to symbolize all the things that we sometimes struggle to say.

”

Our collections of jewelry and timepieces are designed to last for generations. Each and every item that is added to our collection is hand-inspected before it ever reaches the showroom floor. The details make the design, so even our most simple styles are flawlessly executed. Our classics are incomparable and allow our clients to present pieces of distinction destined to become treasured heirlooms. Our in-house goldsmiths meticulously handcraft many of the pieces you’ll find here in our store. Our commitment to superior design and craftsmanship aligns with our belief that jewelry is meant to be given as a sign of love. It should also be made to withstand daily wear and enjoyment. Executing this philosophy requires significant attention to quality and detail, which for us is a labor of love. We’ve built a reputation for consistently providing our clients with the very best, and when searching for the exceptional, details do matter. The brands we represent were carefully selected because they share that same parallel vision of superior quality and customer service. With a commitment to excellence in everything we do, our business must be multifaceted, much like that of a beautiful diamond. Our present has been shaped by our past, and it is our unwavering commitment to the exceptional in all aspects that will propel us to the future. This is our essence, this is our mission—this is Wixon. THE WIXON EXPERIENCE

Diamonds Decades through the

From a scandalous story of a mistress’ smile to a major sports moment that was stopped in search of a lost diamond’s sparkle, the anecdotes of classic jewelry styles are riddled with drama. One of the things we love most about jewelr y is the ability it has to connect the old and the new. Over the decades, some of these trends have left more of a lasting impression than others and are now considered to be jewelry classics. Our tools and techniques have improved, allowing us to build upon these classics and reintroduce them with new and innovative designs. The pieces that resonate with us the most are often those that we have a personal, sentimental connection to or have left a mark as a major fashion milestone. Jewelry, diamonds and gemstones all tell stories of the past while reflecting on modern trends and today’s design inspirations.

THE WIXON EXPERIENCE

TENNIS TROUBLE The name ‘tennis bracelet’ came about after an incident with tennis star Chris Evert during the 1987 U.S. Tennis Championship. Her in-line diamond bracelet slipped off her wrist during a televised match. She requested that the match be delayed until she could find her bracelet, calling attention to her piece of jewelry and sparking a new jewelry craze. The tennis bracelet has remained a jewelry staple ever since. Subtle tweaks to the style now showcase the bracelet better than before by featuring minimal metal, maximum security and a blinding view of brilliant diamonds. In addition to traditional rounds, these bracelets now also feature diamonds in fancy shapes and colors displaying a dizzying array of options.

BANDED TOGETHER Over 5,000 years ago, Ancient Egypt was the first known culture where people would exchange “rings of love” that were often made of woven reeds or leather. It is believed the ring came into existence as a representation of eternal love with no beginning or end. Throughout the years, the ring has always been held in high regard, providing different meanings based on various cultural beliefs. It wasn’t until WWII during the 1940’s that the wedding band started to gain momentum for men in the United States. Soldiers wanted a way to remember their wives back home once deployed. Shortly thereafter, DeBeers launched their famous ‘A Diamond is Forever’ campaign that sparked the trend of the diamond engagement ring and matching his and hers wedding bands. Today’s wedding bands, however, are far removed from the traditional trio set. Brides and Grooms are mixing diamond shapes and metals, creating a fresh new look for the ultimate traditional piece of jewelry.

MATCHING METALS For many years, mixing and matching metals was the ultimate faux pas. The trend for matching began back in the 1950’s when jewelry sets were marketed to women with one cohesive look. If you were wearing a gold ring, then the bracelet, earrings and necklace all had to be the same metal color. The metal choice of the moment has ebbed and flowed through the decades, letting yellow, rose and white all have their moments of glory. Even two-tone metals have made their mark. After observing our need to match, the Swiss introduced Americans to the harmonious blend of white and yellow gold through the release of twotone timepieces. This sparked a new fashion frenzy opening a wide array of style options that were never before considered. Women today are now embracing all options, and mixing metals like never before. Now, fashion spreads feature a yellow gold ring with white gold earrings and a rose gold watch without a second thought. The options are endless, allowing women and men to select the pieces they love and wear them without limits. 14

Paraiba Tourmaline has captivated the world with its rich and intense color, making it the most coveted gemstone discovery of our generation. The discovery of Paraiba Tourmaline is a fascinating story, one that could easily be compared to a

fairy tale. It is a story about a dreamer who believed in the magic of new discovery. Heitor Dimas Barbosa was a man with an unshakeable belief that there was a new, incredible gem just waiting

to be uncovered. His vision was laser-focused on Mina de Batalha, an old dilapidated pegmatite

mine located in the Federal State of Paraiba in Brazil. The mine was a small hill just under 200 feet tall with an area of roughly 200 yards by 400 yards. Beginning in 1981, Barbosa and his crew

used hand tools to dig multiple shafts using only candles as their light source. They dug into the mine for five and a half years with absolutely no success until one day they saw the first sign of

a tourmaline find. It would be another three years until Barbosa’s dream would come to fruition, and they would finally discover a gemstone that the world had never seen.

In honor of our 30th anniversary, we’re excited to unveil our Wixon Signature collection of diamond rings. Devoted to a modern take on traditional, timeless designs, each of these hand-crafted rings is instantly recognizable for its refined style and enduring classic features. Meticulously crafted to our exacting standards, our diamond rings are entirely unique and assured to withstand the test of time in style and craftsmanship. We believe in creating classics the way they are meant to be done. It’s our philosophy that a ring is an expression of personal feelings and we believe a sentiment of such importance should be crafted by a person. Most rings today are machine-made and mass produced in factories overseas. As

cost becomes more important than quality in the era of mass production, true hand-crafted fine jewelry is becoming increasingly rare. Dan and Hope’s obsession with quality in every aspect is the foundation of this exciting new collection. Every diamond ring is designed and created in-house by the hand of one of our highly skilled goldsmiths. The level of attention, care and detail that goes into each piece could never be mimicked by a machine. Hand carved waxes, hand set diamonds, and rings that are polished and finished entirely by hand are just a few of the details that will set an extraordinary ring apart from the ordinary. A Wixon ring is a genuine sign of love and commitment, and our exceptional diamonds are the heartbeat behind the piece. These remarkable

Diamonds & Dolls

In the past 30 years, every piece of jewelry at Wixon Jewelers has gone across the desk of Lorri Wishy. As a certified Graduate Gemologist Appraiser, Lorri is an expert on all things jewelry, and she checks-in every item a client brings for service and inspects every piece before it leaves our store. She has a sharp and critical eye when it comes to jewels and gems, but also for vintage Barbie Dolls. Tell us about your very first Barbie Doll. I remember it vividly because I had been playing with my older sister’s dolls, and on my 5th birthday, my mom and dad got me my very first Barbie. My grandma took me to Target, right here in Bloomington, and let me pick out an outfit for the doll. I chose a beautiful blue organza outfit called Reception Line. My grandma also knitted a sweater for the doll and I still have both! What do you love about Barbie? I love the beautiful outfits, and of course, what’s a girl to do without accessories? Barbie always had them all. My favorite nostalgic outfit is Soda Fountain Clerk, it came with the cap, order pads, serving tray and pencils! I had such an appreciation for the haute couture era where the beautiful gowns were made with satin, tulle, crepe and organza. Mattel did a fantastic job artfully expressing the wardrobes of the day. Describe your collection. I started collecting one outfit and one doll at a time in 1986. I enjoyed trying to acquire all the accessories. It really was a labor of love. My collection focuses on the early vintage days through the glamour era to the Mod Twiggy era, so roughly 1960-1969. Those years were full of dramatic fashion changes.

With over 200 Barbie dolls in her collection, it’s hard for Lorri to choose a favorite, but these five showcase some of her favorite fashion styles from the 1960s.

THE WIXON EXPERIENCE

Speaking of changes, you’ve seen a lot in the jewelry industry during your career. Yes, especially here at Wixon’s. A lot has happened in 30 years, from the store itself to the technology, equipment, and the breadth of gemological resources available at our fingertips. Gemstones can be challenging and I love the ability to have access to any new information I may need. We’ve grown from 4 to 40 employees over these last 30 years, and I’m looking forward to seeing what sort of changes the next 30 years will bring—ha ha.

Living in the land of eternal winter would lead one to believe that the only frozen we need is found outside on the snowcovered ground. Ice cream around here, however, is forefront of mind for many, even in the middle of winter and continues to pop up locally in many gourmet ways. Classic foods of all kinds are having a rebirth of sorts, so it’s no surprise that the ultimate classic dessert is having its reinvented moment with a twist (and not the chocolate vanilla sort). For the longest time, we all knew exactly what to expect from ice cream: soft, pillowy layers of icy vanilla, rich chocolate or simple strawberry all served in a classic sugar cone. Ice cream was basically, well, basic. These days though, the beloved timeless classic has been caught up in a tidal wave of culinary craze. Showcasing both sweet and savory, wild new flavors are being offered with toppings that tease the imagination and serve as the ultimate sensory experience. While there will always be a place for the classics, it’s the new crowd that’s demanding attention. My three favorite and inspiring local ice cream shops are all delicious in their own right and are guaranteed to be a mainstay for years to come.

THE COOL: MILKJAM CREAMERY No doubt about it, I have a mad crush on Milkjam Creamery. They were my first venture into gourmet ice cream almost three years ago and it was love at first lick. Owner and mastermind Sameh Wadi has been a pillar on the Twin Cities restaurant radar for well over a decade, but it has only been three years since he launched Minnesota's ice cream scene to the forefront. Wadi and his executive chef Sean Little have laid out a master footprint that is a tough act to follow, and supplied our city with

a dreamy creamery that still calls for long lines in the dead of winter. Gourmet ice cream is not to be taken for granted. A topquality treat is a perfect symphony of sensations that delicately balances texture and taste. According to Little, the ice cream should be velvety and smooth, the texture without grain or grit, and you should be able to feel and taste the hard work that goes into each batch. Milkjam’s cones are classic in shape, but filled with a rotating line-up that stimulates the senses. My personal favorites seem almost childish in comparison to several of their exotic feats like Thai Tea (aromatic black tea with condensed milk) and Turkish Tiramisu (Turkish coffee & mascarpone ice creams with rum soaked lady fingers) but hey, I can’t help it if Ridin’ Duuurty (oreo milk with oreo chunks and salted peanut butter) (top) When it comes to MN Nice Cream’s signature cones,

and Cereal Killers (orange coriander milk with candied fruity pebbles) keep me coming back on repeat. The hybrid breakfast/ dessert dynamic duo of Cereal Killers is the perfect complement to their signature creation, the Jam Bun. This twist on an ice cream sandwich features any one of their 16 rotating flavors sandwiched between a Glam Doll glazed donut. When it comes to ice cream, Wadi and his dream team are turning our town upside down.

THE CRAZY: MINNESOTA NICE CREAM The expression ‘eat with your eyes’ genuinely applies to Minnesota Nice Cream’s outlandish creations. Beginning in the back of a food truck all dreamed up by Katie Romanski, in two short years Minnesota Nice Cream has become the darling of the food photography scene. It’s easy to see why images of Katie’s creations drive in traffic with lines stacked dozens deep in the summer to her now permanent location. With minimal soft-serve options of vanilla, chocolate or twist, her cones start off simple but after that, her endless array of toppings turn these frozen treats into an edible masterpiece. Sprinkles, glitter, cookies, cake, caramel, berries, brownies and a bevy of other options are artfully layered one on top of the next to create the complete cone experience. I do my best to toe the line and

keep my treats tailored, but one stop at Katie’s dreamland candydecorated cone shop and all bets are off. My advice? Lean in to the experience, and indulge in the ultimate Technicolor treat.

THE CUTTING EDGE: SWEET SCIENCE A classic cone with a single scoop. Seems pretty simple, right? Try again; every sample taste of the 20 rotating options was a fabulous flavor explosion! In 2011, Ashlee Olds set out to create an amazing, pure and all natural ice cream using only the finest quality ingredients and combine them in the most unique way possible. Hoprahs' FAVORITE THINGS

What do media mogul Oprah Winfrey and I have in common, aside from the fact that I added my H to the front of her name? We both have our favorite things! Back when Oprah had her talk show, she would do a feature on her favorite products every year. That’s where the similarities end. Oprah received most of her products for free, nobody gave me free products or even a discount for my unbiased review. While Oprah actually gave the audience these products, I am merely telling you where you can acquire them on your own dime. In all seriousness, I love to find a product I am passionate about and share my good finds with others!

THE UNPLUGGED EDITION: This edition of Hoprah focuses on games or activities that don’t center around TV’s and iPads. We live in a time of where ‘screen time’ supersedes most other activities; playing outside or interacting with other people are fast becoming obsolete. Each of these products are games that are enjoyed by my family and friends, providing indoor and outdoor fun for all ages! –Hope

Otrio is a bit like tic-tac-toe so it is super easy to learn and it makes a perfect coffee table game. Slammo Slammo is similar to volleyball, but with a smaller ball and a circular net. The rules are similar as well, where each team has three hits to spike the ball into the ankle high net. This game is perfect for when you don’t have a lot of space and it doesn’t matter how tall you are!

Ninja Line We love watching American Ninja Warrior on TV, so this ninja line was a natural for our backyard. It can be easily ratcheted between two trees and features a mix of obstacles. It’s great for body strength or just showing off… even I can do it!

BORN TO FLY:

THE ROLEX GMT-MASTER II Originally designed to aid airline pilots in their navigation, the GMT-Master II has become an unmistakable icon.

Precise, reliable, robust and functional, the GMTMaster immediately evokes the glamorous world of 1950s international air-travel. As intercontinental travel developed with the advent of the jet age, and airliners began to swiftly fly across several successive time zones, pilots were obliged to keep an eye on the time in various places in the world simultaneously. Launched in 1955, Rolex developed the GMT-Master to meet their needs at the height of the golden age of air travel. It became the official watch of several intercontinental airlines including Pan Am, the most prominent American airline at the time. In 1959, a major event marked the partnership: the first nonstop Pan Am Jet Clipper flight from New York to Moscow— the captain was wearing a GMT-Master, which was used as a navigation aid during the flight. The GMT-Master is a true “tool watch” that has cont i nua l ly evolved to of fer i mproved tech n ica l 44

p er for m a nc e. O n t he or ig i n a l GM T-M a s ter, t he conventional hour hand, minute hand and 24 -hour hand were synchronized. In 1982, Rolex introduced a new movement that allowed the hour hand to be set independently of the other hands. To clearly mark this evolution, the models fitted with the optimized movement were named the GMT-Master II. From then on, using and setting the watch became easier and more intuitive, and has proven itself to be an ideal travel companion.

BUILT FOR GLOBETROTTERS In addition to conventional hour, minute and seconds hands, which display the local time, the GMT-Master II features an arrow-tipped hand which circles the dial once every 24 hours, as well as a bidirectional 24-hour Cerachrom bezel. When the bezel is in the neutral position (with the triangle at 12 o’clock) the 24-hour hand displays

the reference time, which can be read using the graduations on the bezel. When abroad, travelers can set the local time easily, with the hour hand “jumping” from hour to hour thanks to a mechanism operated by the winding crown. The adjustment can be made independently of the minute and seconds hands, and without affecting the 24-hour hand. As a result, travelers can simultaneously read their local time as well as the time back home.

CERAMIC MASTERY The bidirectional rotatable bezel and 24-hour bezel is central to the design of the GMT-Master II and is the signature feature of its unique and instantly recognizable aesthetic. Over the years its emblematic bezel has been presented in various colors, in single and two-color combinations. On the original 1955 model, the bezel insert was divided into two halves – one red, to correspond with daylight hours, and one blue, for nighttime hours. Since 2005, Rolex has played a pioneering role in the development of special ceramics that are exceptionally resistant to scratches and corrosion, and offer particularly intense colors that are unaffected by ultraviolet rays. In 2013, Rolex introduced the world’s first two-color monobloc ceramic bezel—a blue and black Cerachrom bezel that adorned the GMT-Master II. A feat in terms of applied research and engineering, these colored ceramic bezels bring a unique vibrancy to the timepiece.

A NEW LOOK At Baselworld 2018, Rolex introduced three exciting new versions of the GMT-Master II. For the very first time, the emblematic red and blue Cerachrom bezel is available in Oystersteel on a Jubilee bracelet. The additional versions introduce 18k Everose gold into the collection, both equipped with a newly developed black and brown Cerachrom bezel. The first is created entirely from 18k Everose gold, while the other is an Everose Rolesor version—a combination of Oystersteel and Everose gold. These three new versions are equipped with Rolex’s brand new calibre 3285. This movement is characterized by its exceptional performance, notably in terms of its precision, and guarantees a power reserve of approximately 70 hours. With 10 patent applications filed over the course of its development, this self-winding mechanical movement is a consummate demonstration of Rolex technology at the forefront of watchmaking. Although the GMT-Master II was designed essentially for professional use, its combination of peerless functionality and rugged good looks has attracted a wider audience. As well as appreciating its ability to display different time zones, the GMTMaster II is admired for its robustness and versatile appearance that make it eminently suitable for any occasion. COMPLEMENTARY

COMPLICATIONS Patek Philippe’s World Time Chronograph combines two of the most useful complications in the world of mechanical watches.

The archives of the Patek Philippe Museum are among the deepest and richest in the world, serving as an endless source of inspiration for their engineers and designers. In the 1940’s, Patek produced a unique version of their World Time watch with the addition of a chronograph function. Now housed within the Patek Philippe Museum, this historic timepiece with a rare combination of complications was the inspiration for the world’s thinnest World Time chronograph—the Reference 5930G. Combining a flyback chronograph with a function to display the time in 24 different time zones, this modern reinterpretation is an ideal timepiece for the international traveler. This unique combination of complications required Patek Philippe to develop a new mechanical caliber, the CH 28520 HU. The artful blend of functions retains the emblematic

characteristics of each—the simplicity and clarity of the World Time display, and the smoothness and technical precision of the chronograph. The minimal-friction clutch in the Ref. 5930G offers the ability to run the center chronograph hand continuously, doubling it as a seconds hand. While the 18K white gold case features some classically vintage touches like winglet-style lugs and a guilloche dial, the Ref. 5930G remains a modern watch with contemporary and elegant proportions. With its rare combination of functions, the primary challenge in its development was keeping the watch itself slim and comfortable. Patek Philippe achieved this and created a harmonious blend of style and technology paired with the quiet presence of excellence that connoisseurs expect from Patek Philippe. THE WIXON EXPERIENCE

At the spry age of 82, Rolex testimonee and ocean advocate Dr. Sylvia Earle can still take the pressure.

Forty feet deep, in a swirling current, a school of thousands of sardines blots out the sun. The scene is disorienting because of the clouds of tiny fish that swirl around me in unison, dodging the dozen large groupers who view them as a meal. Suddenly, the school of fish parts, revealing a figure hovering in a shaft of sunlight. It’s a small woman in a wetsuit and ruby red fins, clutching a large underwater camera. She slowly kicks to hold position as she fires off some photos of the wild scene, a calm presence amidst the underwater chaos. This is nothing new to Dr. Sylvia Earle, a constant presence in ocean exploration and environmentalism since the 1950s. At age 82, Earle shows no sign of letting up, still lending her steadfast wisdom and voice to the growing crises facing our planet’s seas.

“HER DEEPNESS”

“If I don’t get wet at least once a month, I’ll dry out!” Earle says as she doffs her heavy dive gear aboard our small boat bobbing in the Sea of Cortez off of Mexico’s Baja peninsula. 56

On her wrist loosely dangles a Rolex watch, but it’s not the burly Submariner or Sea-Dweller you might expect on a diver. “I have a few of those,” Earle tells me later with a wink, referring to the Sea-Dweller on my wrist. “I wear them on expeditions.” So what Rolex does she wear for more “casual” diving? A gold Datejust, a choice both incongruous but somehow fitting for ocean royalty, a woman whose nickname is, “Her Deepness”. This rugged dress watch, the back engraved with her name, is one of several Rolexes that Earle has been wearing since 1970. That’s the year she became part of the first team of female aquanauts, living and working inside an underwater habitat sunk 45 feet in the Caribbean as part of a NASA project called, “Tektite II”. Earle is a long-time ambassador, or “testimonee”, for Rolex, featured in many of their ad campaigns, attending events, and of course, wearing their watches. It’s a natural fit for a brand that has a long history of outfitting explorers with watches. Sylvia Earle was born in New Jersey but as a child,

her family moved to the Gulf Coast of Florida, where she discovered her love of the ocean. She started diving in the 1950s, when the sport, and its technology, was in its early days. By the 1960s, she was an accomplished marine biologist, naming new species and taking part in groundbreaking expeditions and pioneering deep sea exploits. In the 1980s, she set a human depth record when she walked on the sea floor at 1,250 feet wearing a hard shell, one-atmosphere “JIM” suit. In the ‘90s, she was piloting the Deep Rover submarine to even greater depths and held the post of Chief Scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

ON A MISSION

During her long, accomplished career underwater, Sylvia Earle has seen the oceans change, due to rising water temperatures, overfishing, and pollution. She is realistic, but also hopeful that things can change. So when she won a TED Prize in 2009, she used the monetary winnings to

found what will become her lasting legacy: Mission Blue. The organization is dedicated to identifying what it calls “Hope Spots” in the world’s oceans, regions that are holding their own or reversing course to return to environmental health. In an age of pessimism, Mission Blue is a beacon of optimism, led by Earle’s positive voice. She tirelessly travels the world, visiting existing and potential Hope Spots, meeting with government leaders and environmental groups. And diving, always diving. Cabo Pulmo, Mexico, is one of Mission Blue’s most successful Hope Spots and, not surprisingly, a pretty spectacular place to scuba dive. A former fishing village on the Sea of Cortez, the small town’s residents’ livelihood was dwindling due to overfishing, but saw the potential of tourism and sustainability as a way forward. Today it is a success story, a mecca for divers where the sea life has returned by over 400%. A SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP Rolex has a long history of supporting exploration, from outfitting the first expedition to summit Mount Everest, to its work with the National Geographic Society, scientific scholarships, and the Ex plorers Club. Sylvia Earle’s relat ion sh ip w it h Rolex over t he years has been a symbiotic one, with the company benefitting from her unassailable reputation as a testimonee, and Dr. Earle getting financial support for Mission Blue and its campaigns and expeditions, not to mention some pretty fine diving watches. Our first dive done, the boat motors north along the coastline, the captain looking out for signs of a huge school of resident jacks. Sylvia Earle sits calmly on the wooden gunwale as the boat bounces over the choppy surface. As I watch her, I wonder how many hours she has spent underwater in 65 years of diving. From underwater habitats to submarines and walking on the sea floor, she likely has

seen more below the ocean’s surface than anyone else. Yet her enthusiasm for diving is undiminished and wholly inspiring. Someone on the bow spots a disturbance at the surface, indicating the school of jacks below and the captain slows the boat. By the time we stop, Sylvia Earle already has her mask and fins on and her gold Rolex snapped tight over her wetsuit sleeve. With a smile, Her Deepness backrolls into the blue. RE-BORN Jaeger-LeCoultre’s new Polaris collection revives the spirit of the iconic Memovox Polaris into a new collection of vintage-inspired sports watches. Highly regarded for their elegant timepieces and masterful complications, Jaeger-LeCoultre has been at the forefront of watchmaking excellence for 185 years. The Swiss manufacturer has designed more than 1200 calibers but one thing has been missing from Jaeger-LeCoultre’s lineup—a definitive family of sports watches. Inspired by the iconic Memovox Polaris, Jaeger-LeCoultre has developed a new collection to make an elegant statement in the sports watch market. More than simply a tribute watch, this new collection encompasses five entirely new models infused with the spirit of the original timepiece. The Polaris collection draws its inspiration from the Memovox Polaris of 1968, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s ingenious combination of a vibrating alarm function with a fully capable diving watch. In terms of design, the original Memovox Polaris broke the mold for dive watch aesthetics. Most other dive watches in this era were bulky instruments with external rotating bezels and large cases, while the Memovox Polaris had an elegant form with sleek lugs and

60

THE WIXON EXPERIENCE

a rotating inner bezel. Many of the design elements that made it a stand-out watch 50 years ago have been applied to this new generation of sports watches.

A HISTORIC HOMAGE

A single glance at the new models reveals that they are clear descendants of the 1968 Memovox Polaris, refined with the perfect mix of vintage styling and contemporary refinements. Immediately apparent are the large crowns and clean dial composition. Adorned with trapezoidal indices and arabic numerals, the Polaris’ distinctive dial architecture combines a mixture of finishing treatments on three concentric circles to add visual depth to the dial. The unique triple-tone dial is a striking combination of sunrayfinish at the center dial, grained-finish by the indices and a satin-finish on the rotating inner bezel. The cases for the Polaris collection are brand new, with proportions designed for an elegant sports watch. They feature an eye-catching combination of brushed and hand-polished

surfaces, with sharp, plunging lugs and thin, rounded bezels. The case is seamlessly integrated with a newly designed three-link metal bracelet featuring polished and brushed finished surfaces. The straps are interchangeable for alligator leather or calfskin that is offered with an aged leather patina in both light and dark brown.

These new models channel the brand’s heritage of watchmaking expertise and attention to detail to create a foundational sports watch collection, one that redefines sporty elegance. Designed for a wide variety of lifestyles, these vintage-inspired sports watches are elegant enough to wear to the office yet robust enough for a day in the ocean.

SOPHISTICATED & SPORTY

Each of the five new introductions follow the same basic form, but are endowed with different technical functions that add to the functionality of the individual models. The simplest model in the collection is the Polaris Automatic, a 41mm time-only automatic watch. At 42mm, the Polaris Date is slightly larger and includes an integrated date window in the three o’clock position. Issued in a limited edition of 1,0 0 0 pieces, the new Pola ris Memovox is a modern interpretation of the iconic timepiece from 1968. This model retains the iconic three-crown design and incorporates the special vibrating alarm function made famous by the 1968 Memovox Polaris. The Polaris Chronograph adopts its design cues from the collection but branches off from the dive watch DNA by integrating an entirely different function—a dual-register chronograph. At 44mm, the Polaris Chronograph WT is the largest and most complicated timepiece in the collection, incorporating chronograph, GMT and world time functions. THE WIXON EXPERIENCE

Well Suited A watch collector’s perspective on acquiring and wearing watches in the business world.

TIP #1: Thin watches are practical. 62

THE WIXON EXPERIENCE

I’ve been very lucky to have Wixon Jewelers’ Aaron Talbert help guide my watch collection over the years. As a professional college consultant, I work with families across the United States regarding completing college applications for highlyselective colleges. My initial meeting with families is crucial, the appearance of professionalism matters, and the only piece of jewelry I wear besides by wedding ring is my watch. For this reason, watches have been important for much of my professional career. Since founding ScholarEdge in 2000, I’ve been very focused on watches as just one way of conveying a professional appearance. I started off collecting watches, as I suppose many people do, by purchasing timepieces based purely upon appearance. When I started buying watches, I could have cared less about complications or in-house movements. I also, sadly, didn’t focus on the practicality of those watches. But Wixon really has done a great job in teaching me some important lessons and helped me to build my small but much-beloved watch collection.

The timeless and elegant TUDOR 1926 line reflects a world of fine Swiss watchmaking where mechanical excellence goes hand-in-hand with enduring sophistication.

66

THE WIXON EXPERIENCE

Accessible ELEGANCE

The new TUDOR 1926 collection introduces a range of casually elegant and affordable watches for both men and women.

Ever since its recent rebirth into the US market just five years ago, TUDOR has delighted fans with a successful lineup of robust and reliable watches like the Black Bay, North Flag and Pelagos. The missing element has been an accessible and elegant mechanical timepiece that expertly blends traditional aesthetics and modern watchmaking. At Baselworld this year, that watch was introduced to the world—the TUDOR 1926—named after the year the TUDOR brand was created by Rolex Founder Hans Wilsdorf. Available in four sizes with a wide choice of dials, the range epitomizes TUDOR’s philosophy—one of affordability, refinement, and quality.

A WATCH FOR EVERY WRIST

Exemplifying its universal appeal, the TUDOR 1926 is available in four case sizes: 41mm, 39mm, 36mm, and 28mm. The polished steel cases are waterproof to 100 meters, and all four sizes are available with finishing touches in rose gold. With this wide array of possible styles, sizes and dial colors, nearly anyone can find the perfect version to suit their personal tastes. Much more than a mere accessory, the bracelet is an integral part of the aesthetic of a timepiece. The TUDOR 1926 features a refined bracelet with a combination of satin-brushed and polished finishes that enhance the elegance of the watch. Designed for flexibility and strength, the seven-link bracelet is meticulously assembled to closely follow the curve of the wrist. This

new collection was designed for women as well as men to suit wrists both big and small.

HISTORICALLY INSPIRED AESTHETICS

TUDOR has an impressively rich heritage, and the new 1926 family includes a number of classic design elements. Nowhere is this more evident than on the dial itself. TUDOR offers a choice of dial colors featuring either smoothly polished or the embossed “waffle” pattern that was adopted from their earliest history. With its subtle doming effect on the dial, applied numerals, and stylish sword-shaped hands, the 1926 models have a real classic feel. There are even diamond markers available for those that seek to add some sparkle. The wealth of detail in the dials create a striking and intricate play of light that perfectly complements the sword-shaped hands. When TUDOR was first conceived, Hans Wilsdorf intended to create a more accessible, lower cost alternative to the high-end luxury of its parent company. Over the many years since their introduction, TUDOR has been constantly innovating, drawing inspiration from their heritage and perpetually moving forward with modern designs and cutting-edge technology. They continually impress with their quality, gaining enthusiasts and watch aficionados along the way. The 1926 collection captures that very essence of the brand, paying tribute with a range of refined and understated watches that exude mechanical excellence with enduring sophistication. TACTILE

TIMING:

The Origins of the Chronograph It all begins with a single action. Press the pusher and feel the mechanical engagement that releases the second hand as it begins to circumnavigate the dial. Watch as the hand approaches 60 and the minute counter jumps to another hash. Depress the pusher once more and everything freezes as if time stands still. Hit the reset pusher and all hands snap back to zero in the blink of an eye—the delightful dance is ready to begin again. Its tactical nature makes the chronograph function unique among wristwatches, as no other complication requires as much interaction.

68

THE WIXON EXPERIENCE

ORIGINS OF THE TIME WRITER

The first patented chronograph was developed in 1821 at the request of King Louis XVIII—and it was not on a wristwatch. The King was an avid horse racing enthusiast and wanted to record and compare the fastest race times. His personal watchmaker, Nicolas Mathieu Rieussec, developed a new machine consisting of a clockwork mechanism in a box with two enamel discs, one scaled to minutes and the other to seconds. The mechanism would be activated when the race began and when the horse crossed the finish line, a button was depressed that would drop an ink-filled nib onto the disc to mark the exact time. Rieussec’s machine was dubbed “chronograph,” which literally means “time writer.” It wasn’t long before the usefulness of this invention was understood as watchmakers and inventors rushed to refine the nascent technology. It needed to be more portable, accurate and require less ink! Although the basic idea for a chronograph was invented in the early 19 th century, it took nearly 100 years for the technology to be refined and reliable enough to be used in a wristwatch. Chronographs are very difficult to engineer—only the most technologically advanced manufactures produce their own models. In fact, a self-winding chronograph was not introduced until the late 1960’s. Even with the advancements

in modern timekeeping, chronographs remain not only a useful tool, but a true expression of horological achievement.

A SOPHISTICATED STOPWATCH

The ability to record and measure elapsed time from a wrist is extremely valuable in a wide range of industries, making the chronograph an indispensable tool. The introduction of aviation and automobile racing were the next major drivers of chronograph technology, causing the popularity and demand to raise considerably. Any industry requiring very precise or repeated timing could benefit from such a mechanism—sporting events, military navigation, medicine, and even the space program. Aside from timing rocket burn intervals, chronographs also offer more practical uses like tracking parking meters, exercise, meetings, or steaks on the grill. With your chronograph, you can find out how long it REALLY takes your spouse when they say they’ll be ready in five minutes! A staple within any watch collection, chronographs are one of the most useful complications as they suit a variety of needs. Chronographs will always be the tools of pilots, astronauts, race car drivers and doctors, but are also universally appreciated for their ease of use for the everyday collector.

More than simply a stopwatch, a chronograph is a complex feat of engineering and design.

a PULSATIONS SCALE, which allows the user to quickly

and easily calculate the amount of pulses per minute. Start the chronograph, count out 30 pulses, and stop the chronograph. The center hand will indicate the total amount of pulses per minute—a very handy feature for the medical professional!

When a child is diagnosed with a life threatening illness, their family begins a journey marked with fear, sadness, and unimaginable stress. The effects touch every aspect of a family’s life and can have a lasting impact on their mental health, relationships, finances, and overall well-being. With frequent and unpredictable hospitalizations, life becomes a continual state of uncertainty and crisis. Sadly, in spite of the best care and all the love and compassion of family and friends, some children don’t make it. No experience in life is like the loss of a child.
