In a family-owned business, everyone has their chores; be it cleaning counters, showing diamonds or laying on the floor. You’ll find a mix of personalities when you walk inside our store; but we each have a part to play whether we have two legs or four.

Memories My most prized possessions are family photos. I love to flip through albums or stacks of old photos and take a trip down memory lane. It’s not always an old photo that brings me delight, sometimes the photo jogs my memory and I do an “Oh, I almost forgot about that!” In today’s digital age, we take far more pictures than ever before, but do we print them out and go back to look at them? Or do we just accumulate files? Photos allow us to pass on stories and memories just as our ancestors did before this great invention. What pictures are you leaving to pass on? This issue is packed full of memories—making new ones and recalling old ones. Looking back, I came across a photo of our lead goldsmith Barry from 1998. He started here fresh out of college with long, flowing hair. Fast forward nearly 20 years to the picture with him and his bus (pg. 26) and you’ll find a more streamlined coiffure. Some of my favorite photos are from new adventures. Check out the amazing ocean shots from the Talisker Challenge (pg. 58) or dive below the ocean’s surface with Jason Heaton (pg. 42). Regardless of what event you are trying to capture, take time to share it. One of my most cherished photos is of my Grandmother in her farmhouse kitchen, maneuvering far too many dishes into a tiny oven on Thanksgiving. It transports me back in time; I can smell the gravy as I watch her making roses out of radishes, and she’s wearing her favorite pair of earrings. Patek Philippe, a family owned watch company, says you never actually own one of their timepieces—you’re merely taking care of it for the next generation. What do you want to pass on? Many of our clients pass down a timepiece, a favorite ring or other piece of jewelry to their children. My recommendation: have someone take a picture of you wearing the item. Write a handwritten note with the photo about why you want them to have this piece and what makes it special to you. As a sentimental fool myself, I’d cherish the picture and note just as much as the jewel. We hope you enjoy this issue and we look forward to seeing you!

One imagines the life of a gemstone buyer to be filled with a sense of joie de vivre, of globetrotting tropical vacations sprinkled with luxuriously rare diamonds and gems. Whenever I mention a buying trip in conversation, people envision glamorous days spent gallivanting around and playing with gemstones. We make several trips each year to select the jewelry and watches for our store, and in reality—there’s nothing vacation-esque about a buying trip. Here is a behind the scenes look at our yearly Wixon gemstone-buying trip.

7:00am

I start my day by waiting in a long line to show my credentials and pick up my buyer’s badge. The next four hours are spent walking from booth to booth looking for the ultimate 10 carat sapphire, an assortment of 3-8 carat sapphires, some fine rubies, black opals, Paraiba Tourmaline, Columbian emeralds and the list goes on. We are always on the hunt for the finest quality colored gemstones, and the thrill of the hunt is what keeps us returning each year.

The booths have terrible lighting which makes examining color an incredible challenge. I will literally examine thousands of gems through my jeweler’s loupe trying to decide if this one is prettier than the last. Is the price better? How is the cut? What types of inclusions are there? What did I already buy? With over 140 countries represented, thousands of booths and some strong language barriers, the show can be tough to navigate.

By this time my brain is a little mushy, and my feet are sore from walking all morning. It’s time for lunch, which is where I hopefully make my first and only mistake of the day. My egg roll is greasy and cold, just like the rice. Oh well, at least we found a spot to sit! Ten minutes later Dan and I hit the show floor for another four hours.

By the end of the day, I am exhausted. My mind has been spinning with numbers and colors, and I just can’t think anymore. All I really want is to kick off these shoes and go to sleep so I can get up and do it again tomorrow; and the next day, and the next day. Why travel to select color first-hand rather than buying finished designer pieces from the comfort of our store? While it may not be an elegant endeavor, we do this for one simple reason. It’s simply impossible to offer the quality, value and uniqueness that our clients expect from Wixon unless we put in the long hours to hunt down the most spectacular pieces in the world. The relationships that we’ve cultivated over the years grant us front row seats to some of the finest gemstones in the world, straight from the miner’s hands. After 29 years, our favorite part is still watching our clients fall in love with the gems we bring home. That’s the true thrill in our hunt.

According to legend, ancient Persians believed that the earth rested on a giant sapphire, and its reflection is what caused the sky to be blue. Prized since 800 B.C., the ‘Gem of the Heavens’ has acted as an amulet to emperors, stirred the souls of Buddhist monks and represented a symbol of truth for saints. Kings and queens have used this gem for centuries to attract divine favor and defend themselves from harm. Its place in history is as varied as the shades sapphires are found in. Sapphires most loved hue is a royal blue that is not only magnificent, but majestic. It’s no surprise that the king of gems is considered to be the ultimate must-have for many color connoisseurs. A true top-quality blue sapphire is the standard which all other blue gems is

judged against. Certain locations are known for producing premium color, and as a result command top dollar for their unrivaled beauty.

There are many additional locations where sapphire is found in abundance, but the rarest blue sapphires are challenging to mine, difficult to acquire and extremely limited in availability. Royal or vivid blue is the most highly sought-after hue for a sapphire. The gem should also be not too light, and not too dark in appearance. The final outcome of the gem lies in the hands of the cutter. Sapphires don’t have an abundance of inclusions like some gemstones, but they do have features such as color zoning that creates challenges for cutters. Color zoning is where the gem displays uneven color in certain areas. The consistency of the color is a key characteristic to the most valuable sapphires, and a premium polished gem is a true testament to the marvels of nature perfected by the skills of modern man. From a midnight sky to the first hint of blue after a morning sunrise, the ‘gem of the heavens’ is ultimately incomparable.
