CONNECTION Award winning designer Claude Thibaudeau is

known for contemporary designs with a distinctive flair.

Born in the French speaking city of Montreal in 1958, Claude Thibaudeau learned the jewelry business at a very young age by frequenting the Thibaudeau family jewelry shop. The shop was established by his great grandfather in 1872 and mainly consisted of refined custom handmade jewelry, and repair. Claude watched, studied and practiced every aspect of manufacturing, design and repair, and at the age of 16 he was already an experienced gem setter.

At the age of 24, he began creating his first distinctive collections in the basement of his home. He traveled throughout Canada promoting and selling his designs to jewelers. Keeping to his well-grounded family traditions, Claude’s wife Monique joined the business as the company’s administrator, while his 21-year-old brother Marc joined the team as sales manager. Claude made his first foray into the United States in 1992.

Over the years, Claude has created thousands of exquisite pieces and marketed exclusive collections such as Pure Perfection, La Cathédrale, and La Royale. Claude is truly dedicated to creating the finest quality of platinum and 18K gold jewelry, or as he says, “la crème de la crème.” His desire to create the best can be seen with his European Micro-Pavé Collection, Claude’s newest hand crafted collection. These unique pieces are recognized for their unsurpassed quality and incredible attention to detail and workmanship.

Claude’s enthusiasm and love of jewelry design can be directly attributed to his positive attitude and his unique philosophy of “every day surpassing what has been achieved yesterday.”

Mark Patterson merges innovative design with expert craftsmanship at his Newport Beach design studio.

For the past 25 years Mark Patterson has been creating designs recognized for their creativity, innovation and unsurpassed craftsmanship. He strives in each design to achieve a balance between beautiful gem and elegant design; keeping traditional style and integrating new, modern touches for a truly unique and timeless look.

Collaborating as a husband and wife team, Mark and Josette Patterson began their career as jewelry designers 28 years ago. Mark says of his wife, “My training as a goldsmith/jeweler gave me the skills I needed to implement designs, but Josette had the vision. As a designer, sculptor and painter, she has an artistic eye that has helped define our creations.”

Known for his mastery of color, Mark revolutionized the jewelry world with the debut of his Intensity collection in the early 1990’s.

Always striving to reinvent himself and his designs, Mark Patterson launched his bridal collection under the name Promise in 2002. Designing beautiful and feminine engagement rings and fine wedding bands was a natural progression for the designer. Keeping his bridal designs simple and beautiful, Mark always retains a balance of current trends with the timeless beauty of classic elements.

Mark has developed a local following that eagerly looks forward to his yearly visits to our store. Braving our Minnesota elements is something the self-proclaimed ‘beach boy’ has adjusted to over the years, but it’s not unusual to find him sporting flipflops and jeans during one of our late April blizzards. His laid-back personality and friendly demeanor draw clients to passionately support his exceptional designs, knowing they will receive the best in quality and craftsmanship.

by Hope Wixon One of the enjoyable things about buying loose color gemstones is figuring out what you are going to do with them. Sometimes a single gem screams pendant, other times a great ring. My husband, Dan and I happened to find a suite of 15 Tanzanite gemstones, all matching and graduating in size totaling 137.64 carats!

PERFECTLY MATCHED

What makes this suite special is that all the Tanzanites were cut out of the same host rock. Tanzanites can be difficult to match because they are trichroic.

Trichroism is a Gemology term meaning that as light passes through a mineral it vibrates in different planes. This causes the stone to exhibit a different color depending on which axis it is positioned on. This phenomenon makes Tanzanite very reactive to the light source under which it is viewed. As all stones were from the same host rock, they present on the same axis. Trying to match 15 gemstones from different site locations would be extremely difficult and never as perfect as these.

BRILLIANTLY DESIGNED

Just as difficult as it was to assemble this collection, conceiving a design to set them in was more challenging than we thought. We enlisted the help of one of our custom goldsmiths, Ken Singleton. He is a very gifted artist and craftsman. Ken, Dan and I sat down and talked about our vision for the Tanzanites. Dan wanted Platinum with a big diamond look. I preferred a design with movement and graceful fit. I didn’t want the design to sit like a

hula hoop around the neck, needing constant adjustments. Ken went to work presenting us with four or five drawings. Dan and I immediately fell in love with the same drawing.

METICULOUSLY CRAFTED

Next, Ken carved one section in wax so we could see the design and shape three-dimensionally. After a few tweaks he carved a crown for the largest center Tanzanite. With large colored gemstones stone depth must be accounted for in creating the design. How could we build this so it didn’t appear bulky and lay too high off the skin? Ken meticulously carved each crown. In the side gallery, he inserted hand-made wire filigree work. To top it off, he bezel set a single diamond in each filigree section. The result was a beautiful airy composition.

Next, each “S” shaped link must hinge correctly. With the weight and size of the gemstones, they needed to lay flat, not drop forward, each link must swing freely so the necklace moves with you and not against you.

Each phase of the process was slow as the gems were graduated in size.

Ken had to carve each crown for every individual gem and each “S” link accordingly. Finally, after 3½ months and setting over 642 diamonds, Ken’s masterpiece was finished! As with any great piece of art, Ken Singleton signed his handmade clasp with the year and his initials.

The yellow diamond craze is increasing at a frantic rate.

Never before have jewelry lovers been so fascinated by fancy colored diamonds. Yellow diamonds that are exceptionally well cut skillfully display their color, where poorly cut diamonds miss the mark visually.

An Old Fashioned

LOVE AFFAIR Almost everyone is curious about old jewelry. Perhaps it’s because most people have a piece or two tucked away in a drawer or a locked box. Maybe it is grandmother’s locket, your favorite uncle’s watch or a ring handed down in the family. Discovering our ancestry has fueled this desire to know about our heirlooms.

The history of antique and period jewelry is defined by the styles of each period. These design elements are reflected in jewelry motifs much the same way they were reflected in furniture and other decorative arts. These periods often overlapped or even ran concurrently. Waning

jewelry styles in England and the European Continent could still be at their peak in America.

Most antique and period jewelry was created in four different historical periods: Victorian, Edwardian/Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Retro. Each period has its own style defined by the people and events of the era.

Many of you have enjoyed our ‘Wixon wine’ over the years. The true label behind ours belongs to our friends, the Williams family. Nearly 25 years ago, Chris walked into our store looking for a special piece of jewelry. We discovered we also had a shared passion of wine.

After accepting his invitation to visit his Wattle Creek vineyard in California, we fell in love with his wines and wanted to share them with our clients.

A LITTLE BIT ON A BIG WINE

Christopher and Kristine Williams were living in Arizona when they found the Sonoma County property that would change their lives. In 1994 a rare opportunity to purchase an Alexander Valley vineyard and winery presented itself.

They were captivated with the beauty of the area and the special nature of the hillside property, which is bordered by the famed Russian River. In the late spring of that year the Williams acquired the 56 acres that is now Wattle Creek.

Chris and Kristine relocated the family permanently to California in 2001 so the family could experience all that the wine country had to offer. They are dedicated to making wine that they enjoy and share with friends.

The Wattle Creek family has grown to include many new friends who now enjoy the hand crafted wines.

Their intent has never changed, Chris and Kristine strive to produce beautifully crafted estate wines that they are proud to serve and enjoy. Their son, Ben, lives and works at the winery ensuring that Wattle Creek continues to set the standard for excellent wines.

Few individuals can be said to have been both of their time and ahead of their time. And yet, Hans Wilsdorf, founder of Rolex and visionary par excellence, was precisely that.

This rare and timeless mix epitomizes both the man and the brand he created. The prodigious and prolific innovator, who died in 1960, left an invaluable legacy to watchmaking in general and to Rolex in particular.

Today, it is impossible to imagine a world where the wristwatch is not common currency. Yet, that was the case in 1905. Times were however changing. Lifestyles and dress codes as well. Hans Wilsdorf, only 24, “convinced of its enormous potential in a sports-minded country . . . like Great Britain”, was determined to create a wristwatch as robust and reliable as the pervasive pocket watch, then the order of the day. No easy task.

Precision had yet to be perfected in a case of such minuscule proportions, as he distinctly reminds us: “At that period, the wristlet watch was … an object of derision. This annual calendar Patek Philippe is simply a work of art. The Ref. 5396 reflects the signature dial architecture of Patek Philippe calendar watches from the 1940s and 1950s. It features a classic inline double-aperture displaying day and month, with an additional aperture in the six o’clock position to display the date. INNOVATION

One of the most impressive and sought after complications in current production is the perpetual calendar. Jaeger LeCoultre took their passion for innovation and sought to create a movement that not only featured a perpetual calendar, but also fit in an extremely thin case. The result is the remarkably slender Master Ultra Thin Perpetual Calendar. This incredible timepiece allows the wearer to keep track of the time, day, date, week, month and year.

Once set, the automatic watch will not need any adjustment until the year 2100. The perpetual calendar mechanism takes into account the length of each month and even accounts for leap years. Even with all the incredible features in this complicated movement, the Caliber 868 is thin enough to fit within a case that is just 9.22mm thick.

EXCELLENCE

The Duomètre a Chronographe is a true work of art and it was made with watch lovers in mind. The partially skeletonized dial allows the wearer to truly enjoy the beauty of the inner workings viewable behind two separate power reserve indicators. Jaeger LeCoultre developed a Dual Wing system in which the movement separates the power going to the complications from the power that goes to indicating the time. What is most impressive and amusing to watch is the foudroyant function (also known as a split-second counter) at the six o’clock position on the dial. This function can count down time to 1/6th of a second, making a full revolution every

second. The movement is completed in German Silver which allows the watch to take on a beautiful patina over time.

by Jason Heaton The 1960s were the golden age of the so-called, “tool watch”, those timepieces built with features for specific purposes —regatta timers for sailors, slide rule chronographs for pilots and anti-magnetic watches for scientists and engineers. But it was the dive watch, which rose to prominence with the growing sport of scuba diving, that captured the public’s imagination more than the others. Dive watches have a formfollowing-function utility that is unmistakable—a chunky case impervious to water intrusion, a high contrast dial for legibility in all conditions, and a rotating bezel for timing underwater excursions. Dive watches became favorites of divers and landlubbers alike as emblems of an adventuresome lifestyle and a go-anywhere aesthetic. But in 1967, an innovative dive watch was introduced that was built for such a narrow audience of users that it didn’t even go on sale publicly for another two years. Now, almost five decades later, that watch, the Rolex Sea-Dweller, remains a tool watch icon and a cult classic.

In the mid-1960s, diving was no longer merely for recreation. Offshore oil reserves spurred an aquatic gold rush to harvest the millions of barrels below the seafloor and deep sea commercial divers were in high demand.

Their work involved laying, welding and maintaining drilling equipment and pipeline on the bottom of the sea. The work was difficult and required that the divers live for days at a time in a pressurized chamber underwater. The divers would alternate between time working in the water and downtime inside the dry chamber, which was pressurized the same as the water in which they were working. The breathing gas in the chamber was made up predominantly of helium with a minimal amount of oxygen. This allowed them to work at great depths without experiencing the narcotic effects caused by breathing pressurized air. The gas affected the divers’ voices, making them sound like chipmunks, but it also had an effect on their wristwatches.

Helium atoms are tiny and during the divers’ time inside the dry chamber, the high pressure gas would seep into their watches, past the rubber seals. At the end of their days at depth, the chamber would be slowly depressurized to bring the divers safely to surface air pressure. As this happened, the helium atoms inside the watch expanded, until the pressure increased, blowing off the watch’s crystal, often

ruining the watch. Needless to say, this was an unintended consequence and the largest commercial diving firm, Comex, approached Rolex for a solution.

That solution was the Sea-Dweller.

A NEW KIND OF DIVE WATCH

The Sea-Dweller evolved from Rolex’s highly capable Submariner, which was already a popular watch with professional and recreational divers.

Rolex beefed up the Submariner’s case and crystal to withstand greater depths and added a longer dive suit extension to the clasp but it’s what they put on the side of the case that made it unique—a gas release valve. This small one-way plug would pop out if pressure inside the watch got too high, allowing helium to harmlessly vent to the atmosphere.

The solution worked and the SeaDweller was quickly adopted as the watch of choice by commercial and military divers working in pressurized habitats. Rolex patented the invention and by 1969, decided they might as well sell the Sea-Dweller publicly; surprisingly, it gained a following.

Over the years, the watch doubled its depth rating from 610 meters to 1,220,

and was given a sapphire crystal and more corrosion-resistant steel. But then Rolex discontinued it in the mid-2000s.

Despite the introduction of the bigger Deepsea Sea-Dweller that replaced it, collectors mourned the loss of this original tool watch from Rolex’s lineup.

Fast forward to this past August.

I’m on a boat bobbing in the Straits of Mackinac, the narrow stretch of water between Lakes Michigan and Huron. I zip shut my drysuit, spit in my mask and check my regulator one more time. Then I pull the new Rolex Sea-Dweller 4000 over my thick neoprene glove, snap shut the clasp, spin the bezel to align the zero mark with the minute hand, and jump into the 40-degree water.

OVERKILL WELCOME

At BaselWorld in 2014, Rolex revealed an entirely new Sea-Dweller and watch enthusiasts rejoiced. The SeaDweller 4000, as it is called, picks up right where its forebears left off—a 40-millimeter case made from 904L steel, an engraved ceramic timing bezel and the latest Rolex calibre 3135 with a blue Parachrom hairspring that is immune to the effects of magnetism.

And of course, on the left flank, its calling card—the gas release valve.

I wasn’t breathing heliox on my dive to the wreck of the Cedarville, nor would I be living for days inside a diving chamber hundreds of meters underwater. But the traits of the SeaDweller 4000 still served me well on multiple dives to 100 feet. Its Glidelock clasp was easy to adjust over my thick diving suit, the bezel grippy enough to operate with gloves on, and at depth, under the shadow of the wrecked ore freighter, the Chromalight luminescent markers glowed a legible and soothing blue, reminding me how much bottom time I had left before I had to surface without needing decompression.

In a world increasingly obsessed with obsolescence, it is comforting that Rolex, despite its prestige and status, still embraces its roots in building rugged specialized watches for specific purposes. Sure, the SeaDweller is overkill for all but a handful of commercial divers in the world who need its specialized features. But 100 feet underwater, exploring an icy shipwreck, overkill is still something to appreciate.

Q. Rumor has it, your wife Chris cleans all your fish. Is that true?

Q. Where did you get your passion for fishing?

A. My mother cornered Chris early in our relationship and advised her, “Never clean a fish. If you do it once, you will be doing it the rest of your life.” She catches more fish and larger fish than I do, but I remain the official fillet creator at our house.

A. My parents and grandparents both loved to fish. My parents were school teachers so we spent summers at the lake. Fishing was in my blood early in life just like my passion for timepieces.

My grandfather worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad in the 1940’s and 1950’s, when fine mechanical timepieces were highly coveted. Lives depended on absolute accuracy in those days. He passed his desire for timepieces down to me as well as fishing.

Q. Do you have a favorite spot/ place to fish or favorite fish?

A. My favorite spot to fish is at the helm of my old Lund boat. Most fisherman never reveal a good fishing hole. If they do, be skeptical. There are many species I love to fish but if I had to pick a favorite, it would be the elusive walleye.

The walleye is a challenge to catch as well as great table fare, especially for breakfast. I prefer it pan fried in olive oil with a light breading and a sunny side up egg on top.

Q. Are you one of those guys where fishing trips equate to staying in high end lodges?

A. I would like to say yes, but my wife or one of my fishing buddies may see this article so I will be honest. I enjoy roughing it when I am in the great outdoors, this means different things

to different people. Accommodations are typically minimal for us. My wife loves to camp in the back of our truck which we call “The Silverado Motel.“

Q. Do you have any advice for people that may be interested in the outdoors?

A. In Minnesota you need to invest in good equipment and don’t make excuses. You can always look at the weather and talk yourself out of doing something outside. Some of my best outdoor experiences have been in the harshest weather Minnesota can dish out.

You have probably seen it— the guy walking down the street with a watch so big that it looks like he’s wearing a dinner plate on his wrist. We then think to ourselves, “What gives?

We all have different definitions of “big” and this definition changes when talking in terms of watches versus other products. Some will say that smaller watches are too feminine, while others

In today’s society, we strive to make something as small as possible yet end up favoring size in the end. Think about cell phones; innovation brought us tiny devices like the Motorola RAZR. Now we favor even more technical phones that are far larger such as the iPhone 6S+. It’s the same way with watches and that’s why diversity prevails. Louie always thought he could fly.

We are saddened by the loss of a member of our family, Louie José Wixon. Louie was not an ordinary dog.

My husband and I both grew up having dogs, we’ve had lots of dogs in our lifetime. We both recognized when Louie was about 6-9 months old, that this guy was the dog of a lifetime! Louie was more human than dog. He wasn’t cut out for hunting, his first pheasant he spit out…he didn’t like the feathers in his mouth! Louie was patient. He used to sit for an hour or two on a chair next to me in our bridal area while I was showing diamond rings. He always preferred any chair to the floor. He was an optimist, he never gave up on the idea of a table scrap until the plate was in the dishwasher and the dishwasher was running! Louie was a sweetheart. He would carry around his big stuffed chicken and whether it was trips to the nursing home, or days at Wixon Jewelers he would work the room and make sure everyone had a chance to pet him! Louie was a mind reader. He knew if he had a chance at getting you to bring him with, he knew when you needed an extra snuggle, he knew precisely when we were 5 minutes from home. Louie was a kind, gentle, sweet boy who has left a huge hole in our hearts. —Hope Wixon
