Change is Good
wo years have passed since we last published our Wixon Experience magazine. As small business owners, these last two years have tested Dan and I in every way. One truth that we’ve held onto over the last 33 years of business is “change is good.” This adage has served us well and has been a guiding principle during many hard and challenging years. While some would say challenging is an understatement for what 2020 and 2021 brought us all, we look toward the silver lining and the positive changes from the last two years. Personally, I never would have pictured myself as an at-home teacher. Homeschooling my kids from our dining room tested me, but it also gave me an invaluable opportunity to spend precious time with them and see the full scope of their personalities. Placing more value on family time brought positive change to our team as well. With our new store hours, we open earlier and close at 5pm which allows us to cater to our early rising clients while allowing our team more time to spend with their families in the evening. Our store has seen an abundance of positive change through adversity. We’ve added several new members to our team that bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise. We evolved how to best serve our clients and launched our Virtual Concierge program. This new service enables us to offer expert advice and exceptional service, now from anywhere in the world—even to those seasonal Florida and Arizona snow birds. We’ve re-defined our vision to reflect the store we want to be, and the beautiful items we choose to offer. As you’ll see throughout these pages, our collections of jewelry and timepieces have never been this unique and extraordinary! This edition is filled with pieces, people and stories that are sure to inspire and delight. Take inspiration from the playful pups who help struggling Veterans, and learn how Panerai is investing to help preserve Mother Earth. Nestled within these pages are some of the ways we coped during the pandemic, from the rise of bartending at-home to an increased emphasis on health and wellness. Enjoy the whimsey and beauty these pages hold. We are thrilled to be able to present you with our printed magazine once again!

T
he beauty of a gem moves us all differently, but it’s known in the gem world that there is no stone more exhilarating then spinel. A collector’s gem that comes in a dazzling array of colors, spinel is guaranteed to ignite inspiration and create an emotional connection. Its appeal in every color is indisputable. While spinel comes in a number of different colors, its magnetizing brilliance is consistent across every hue. What draws us to this gem is an intangible aspect that is just as complex as the gem itself. It’s not a matter of which spinel one will choose, but merely with which color does one’s collection begin? Spinel comes in a variety of colors that are found in various countries around the world.
This is a gemstone with an international presence in all of the most revered locations where gemstones are found. The sizzling red spinel found in Burma screams passion and danger. Lavender spinel found in Sri Lanka showcases a breadth of color from distinct violet to a blueish hue that can only be compared to Monet’s finest watery pastels. The range of color available in pink spinel is perhaps the most impressive. Fiery fuchsia, ballerina pink, peachy pink, rosy pink—there is sure to be a shade of pink to suit even the most feminine of tastes. The gems themselves become a global escape, with each unique hue hailing from a different location including prized origins such as Tanzania, Madagascar and Vietnam as well as Burma and Sri Lanka.

“A gem’s effect on us is not merely visible, certainly not concrete, it is ethereal. Gems expose us to another reality; they present a different perspective on the world and open the door to places long dreamt of.” - Vladyslav Y. Yavorskyy
A striking 3.15-carat purple spinel. Framed by a double halo of alexandrite and diamonds. All enhanced by the 18k rose gold design.
This light blush 2.36-carat spinel shifts from a pink to a soft lilac in the light. Paired beautifully with rose gold and a halo of brilliant diamonds.
With its complex legacy and storied history, spinel is a gem of centuries-old importance that has been featured in some of the world’s most provenanced pieces of jewelry. From the Crown Jewels of past royalty to the modern couture catwalk, spinel’s unrivaled brilliance has allowed it to take center stage at every opportunity. In fact, its brilliance is the single most impressive trait about this rare beauty. The light reflection of spinel brings a special luminescence that can’t be found in any other gem. While spinel’s wide variety of candy-like colors are attention grabbing, even the most muted of hues provide a superior sparkle that is eternally captivating.

THE WIXON EXPERIENCE
The transparency and clarity of these crystals are exceptional. Unlike an emerald, spinel’s general nature will be visually free from inclusions and imperfections. The durability of this stone rivals that of ruby and sapphire, making it an excellent gem for daily wear. Factor in this gemstone’s extraordinary brilliance and fire, and it’s easy to see why spinel is quickly gathering international acclaim by both new buyers and seasoned connoisseurs alike. While spinel has been around for centuries, newer discoveries are finally allowing gem collectors the opportunity to experience and see spinel’s unforgettable beauty.

GLASSWARE By Jessica Gylsen
Best in Glass
Pro Tips
I’m a firm believer that the glass you choose to drink from will significantly impact your experience. For me, the glassware is as important as the quality of the beverage that’s being served. Stemware is designed with a distinct purpose in mind; it allows the wine to breathe and helps control temperature. The same holds true with cocktails where aroma and temp control correlate to the crystal shape. Different glassware styles elicit different aspects of the libation. Beautiful glassware is just as much a mental thing. A fantastic glass of wine or creative craft cocktail is a small moment of luxury meant to be enjoyed start to finish. It’s a curated moment where the glassware makes the beverage an all-encompassing heightened experience.
CONVERTABLE CLASSICS: Invest in multi-purpose basics first and think creatively. Top-quality lowballs double as a beautiful piece of crystal to house a variety of different cocktails. A classic coupe glass will be one of the most versatile in one’s collection. SIGNATURE STYLE: Search antique markets, specialty stores and online purveyors of crystal for unique pieces that suit your home and match your personality. HANDWASH ONLY: Don’t use the dishwasher. If you’ve had more than one, always wait to wash glasses until the morning after. Trust me... I speak from experience.

INGREDIENTS by Dustin Reed
Taste the Difference
Pro Tips
The quality of the spirits and ingredients that you use creates a distinct and noticeable difference between two styles of the same drink. Take the simple Screwdriver for example. Have you ever noticed how much better it tastes with premium vodka, or how fresh-squeezed juice makes all the difference versus juice from a carton? The details are where a cocktail goes from average to awesome! A good beverage is so much more than the sum of its parts—if you put good in, you’ll get good out.
BOTTOMS UP: Your top-shelf spirts should be reserved for drinks with minimal to no added ingredients. For ingredient-heavy cocktails, it’s perfectly acceptable to use mid-range spirits. SUGAR RUSH: The quality and type of sugar can make a big difference in the overall taste of the drink. For the classic Old Fashioned, try using fine-quality Demerara sugar instead of a basic white blend for a richer, more robust flavor. ICE ICE BABY: Don’t underestimate the power of the cube! The purity of the water as well as the shape, size and texture of the ice makes all the difference. It’s possible to make clear ice at home, but I’ve found MN Pure Clear Ice to be the best.
GARNISHES by Hope Wixon
Top It Off It’s often said that we eat with our eyes; it’s all about the presentation! The same philosophy is equally important with what’s being poured. Through sight and smell, we get a first glimpse as to what our liquid experience entails. Garnishes add something extra to indulge the senses while enhancing the enjoyment of the drink. Fresh herbs such as mint, rosemary and thyme from the garden lend both flavor and visual interest to a cocktail. Experiment by incorporating different herbs, spices, fruit, nuts and even candy. As we all know in life, it’s all about accessorizing.
18
THE WIXON EXPERIENCE
Pro Tips FRESH IS BEST: Go with what’s fresh and in-season. At their peak, basil, mint, rosemary and thyme will lend a strong impactful flavor to a wide variety of drinks. RAID THE FRIDGE: Look for items in your fridge and cupboards. A good cocktail is really about being a good cook. Cayenne, cardamom, star anise or even a tablespoon of raspberry jam can all come into play. SMACK THAT: Before adding it to the cocktail, smack your fresh herb garnish against your hand before adding it to the cocktail to release essentials oils and add extra aroma to the drink.
TECHNIQUE by Jayme Pretzloff
Shake It Up Mastering mixology requires an intimate understanding of your ingredients and how they blend together. A simple rule of thumb is that anything containing juice, eggs or dairy should be shaken, while cocktails made entirely of spirits or that include a carbonated liquid should be stirred. Most cocktail recipes are self-explanatory—shake it or stir it—but there are some techniques that can really elevate your cocktail game. Experimentation is key, but practice makes perfect. Developing your bartending skills can be a lot of fun, and with a little practice, you’ll be whipping up amazing drinks just like a professional bartender.
Pro Tips DRY SHAKE: When making drinks containing egg whites, it’s imperative to first shake the mixture without ice. Then add ice to the shaker and shake the drink a second time. The initial “dry shake” allows the drink to emulsify and produce a thicker foam on top of the finished cocktail. Without a good dry shake, cocktails such as the Whiskey Sour will come out flat and froth-less. CHILL OUT: To keep cocktails crisp and cool longer, it’s important to chill your glassware. Before you start making the cocktail, fill the glass with ice and water. By the time you’re ready to pour, the glass will be adequately chilled. POOR POUR: Use a jigger to get all your measurements right. While free pouring is faster and flashier, small inaccuracies can quickly add up and imbalance a cocktail’s flavor profile.

A rough diamond is far from dazzling. Its angular carbon composition was formed billions of years ago through the fury of mother nature. The right amount of heat and pressure, in the right geological conditions must operate in harmony to chemically create a raw carbon crystal. The chance of that crystal becoming the sparkling diamond beauty that we know and love? Even more rare as 80% of the world’s diamonds are used for industrial purposes in tools, drills and lasers. The vast majority of the world’s diamonds are not worthy to be fashioned, polished and cut into a finished diamond.
TICKLE YOUR FANCY
While the allure of a finished white diamond is irresistible, it’s the revered fancy colored diamonds that have come to hold a special place in society. These pastel beauties are infinitely more rare than white diamonds. According to GIA, the world’s foremost authority in gemology, only 1 in every 10,000 gem-quality diamonds are considered to be fancy. The term “fancy” denotes that the diamond is a rare colored diamond, which can be found in every color of the spectrum, including the most recognized yellow, pink and blue. Within these hues, the strength of color is graded using terms such as vivid, intense and faint. The purer and more singular the color, the more valuable the diamond. Clarity, shape and size are key as well, but the color of the diamond is the single most important attribute in determining value. Its hue is what will set the diamond apart from its peers. The color is formed through trace elements, such as nitrogen and boron, or as a result of the formation process and the crystal’s surrounding environment. There is an undeniable mystique to the pure, untamed beauty of a rough and uncut fancy colored diamond. From here, 1.6 billion years of formulative conditions are handed over to a diamond cutter to unveil mother nature’s masterpiece.
1 While a rough diamond may be nature’s gift, it must be cut with extreme care and precision to showcase its most desirable attributes.
2 A master gem cutter must carefully analyze and plot their initial cuts to ensure the rough crystal transforms into a dazzling finished diamond.
CRAVE-WORTHY COLOR
Pink, yellow, blue or green, every hue is precious and magnificent in its own right. What begins as an ordinary crystal will slowly be transformed into an extraordinary diamond of incomparable beauty. Modern technology helps to plot out the ideal facet placement to amplify the stone’s color and maximize carat weight. Many master artisans still finish the process by hand letting every scintillating sparkle of the diamond speak to them throughout the process. One slight misjudgment by a diamond cutter can mar or shatter the stone, an irrevocable outcome. Plotting, cutting and polishing a fancy colored diamond is both a science and an art with the end result a sparkling, wearable reward that was millenniums in the making.
3 With pink diamonds, even the smallest nuances to the cutting process can dramatically affect appearance and value.
4 Diamonds of this importance are only handled by master diamond cutters with decades of experience.

The raritý
Pink diamonds are in a league of their own, and they are only becoming increasingly more rare and more desired. One of the marvels of nature is the modest size that pink diamonds are often found in. The production for pinks over one carat in size has been less than a handful annually. Due to their limited availability, pink diamonds are worth 10 to 100 times more than a classic white diamond. A 14.83-carat stone, dubbed "The Spirit of the Rose," sold in November 2020 for $26.6 million. This incredible diamond is internally flawless and graded as Fancy Vivid Purple-Pink. Only 1% of all pink diamonds are larger than ten carats, and only 4% of all pink diamonds are graded 'Fancy Vivid' which display a truly spectacular color.

supply is from this mine. The Argyle mine officially closed in October 2020, which ensures that rose-hued diamonds are set to become even more desirable. Pink diamonds are so rare that it is known as one of the most valuable and investment-worthy stones in the market. The rarity of fancy colored diamonds is bringing global attention to these glittering pastel beauties. Worldwide collectors, investors and jewelry connoisseurs have become aware of the hypnotic power of pink, yellow, blue and other fancy colored hues. This awareness is driving demand at a fevered pace and setting record prices at auction. To date, the top five most expensive jewels ever sold at auction are colored diamonds—three pink and two blue. While it’s difficult to estimate the long-term supply of natural colored diamonds, one thing that remains certain-- their intrinsic beauty, rarity and value will forever be impossible to ignore.

Dressing for your day has taken on a whole new meaning over these last few years. Our events and occasions have, to some degree, lost predictability. Black-tie galas, formal fine dining and elaborate parties have given up ground to smaller, more intimate affairs. Our wardrobes have become more versatile and transitionary, and our occasions are more revered and treasured. New avenues of communication have made us all look at how we present ourselves differently. As our social calendars continue to adapt, the place for statement jewelry in a modern jewelry collection is as essential as ever.

Whether elegant earrings, a bold ring or a statement necklace, selecting the style of your signature piece is a highly personal choice. Some women prefer the swing and sashay of an ornate drop earring, where others may prefer more of a structured collar-style necklace. When choosing which statement piece is right for you, try on multiple options and variations, and then go with what makes you feel your most boldly beautiful! A good fashion rule to follow is to limit your accessorizing to one signature piece per outfit as too many at once can become diluted and overdone.
NECKLACE: Diamond Riviera necklace featuring 23.40 carats of diamonds set in platinum.
By nature, fine jewelry is statement-worthy for its quality and sentiment. For a special occasion, stepping up the scale and importance of the necklace or earrings is a wonderful way to commemorate the moment. Statement jewelry presents a fabulous opportunity to celebrate an accomplishment or allow an avenue for an indulgent self-purchase. Every woman deserves to feel confidently beautiful, and a bold piece of statement jewelry is designed to do just that.

s a society, we are superficial observers. We form split second opinions all day long on snippets of what we may see or hear. We cast our judgements—love or hate—but how well do we really know someone in the spotlight? As the head football coach at the University of Minnesota, PJ Fleck is known for his boundless energy and unrestrained personality. He is one of the most charismatic leaders in all of football with a fierceness on the field that is matched only by his enduring charm off the field. Whether on or off the field, PJ is a human Energizer bunny that just keeps on going. Where did this endless energy and perpetual passion come from? These traits aren’t new or unauthentic; this vim and vigor can be traced back to the sweet little town of Sugar Grove, Illinois where PJ spent most of his youth. Young PJ was so energetic as a child that his mother took him to several doctors, explaining that he has so much energy that he can’t sit still and won’t sleep. Today he would be diagnosed or labeled and most likely prescribed medication, but his mom’s solution was to enroll PJ in every activity she could find. He played four sports so when one sport ended, there was always a new one starting. His mother was so determined to keep him busy that she even enrolled him in his older sister’s pottery class, much to his sister’s embarrassment. PJ’s dad worked full-time for AT&T and when he wasn’t working, he was usually coaching. As a coach’s kid, the expectations were always higher for PJ. His dad’s coaching style wasn’t about how many strikes PJ threw in baseball, it was all about how he handled himself when he was throwing balls instead of strikes. He taught PJ the importance of how to carry yourself, whether winning or losing, and the importance of never giving up.
The Value of Hard Work
mouth. He was always quick to stop at the table to claim responsibility, be accountable and say, “I’m so sorry, I fileted that fish.” This lesson in accountability still lives with him today. These early busboy days are where PJ learned to take pride in his work and responsibility for everything he put his name on, whether for himself or others.
The Great Outdoors Growing up in Illinois, the Fleck family enjoyed spending family time and taking vacations in Wisconsin, usually St. Germaine or Lake Geneva. PJ was always drawn to the water and found nature to be extremely peaceful and spiritual. A bald eagle commands his attention every time one soars above him. Even at practice, if PJ sees a bald eagle, he will make everyone stop to look at the eagle. His love of water and nature has only grown stronger over the years. PJ and his wife Heather have a lake home where the whole family spends time enjoying life on the water. From wake surfing and tubing to jet skis and kneeboarding, PJ doesn’t miss a beat. Although he admittedly had to give up his days of extreme tubing because his shoulder didn’t appreciate the beating. Instead, he’s taken up wake-surfing as a fun, lower-impact activity for days at the lake.
Family Competition In 2016, PJ married his wife Heather, a competitive match made in heaven. They both enjoy many of the same things, which leads to plenty of friendly spousal competition. Whether playing Rummy, Spades, or their favored Skip-Bo, PJ and Heather genuinely enjoy battling against each other. There can be a lot at stake but their wagers are friendly—
Living in a small farm community and growing up with a cornfield in your backyard, it’s only fitting you participate in the annual Sugar Grove Corn Boil. If you are the son of Mr. Fleck, who was heavily involved, you would shuck corn like the other kids, but unlike the other kids, you wouldn’t be paid for doing it. His dad would always say to PJ, “Why should you get paid for something the town is going to do for your enjoyment? You need to give your time.” In that moment PJ learned that giving the gift of your time was far more important than just giving something to somebody. Those small town lessons and core values that he was taught at a young age have become guiding principles in his life as a father, a coach and as a public figure. Even a packed schedule full of sports and activities couldn’t get PJ out of doing family chores. In the Fleck household, you did what you were asked to do and you didn’t get paid for helping out. It wasn’t until he was 16 when PJ got his first paying job as a busboy at the Fisherman’s Inn, the fancy restaurant in town. Whether in sports or at work, his competitive spirit thrived and pushed him to be the best regardless of the situation. “I wanted to be the best busboy,” Fleck said. “The waitress with the best section got to pick the busboy first, then it goes down the list. I was going to make sure I got picked first.” The restaurant was known for its fresh rainbow trout that was caught daily in ponds located behind the restaurant. The busboys were responsible for fileting the fish and they had to be deboned effectively and efficiently. PJ’s Catholic guilt would set in if he walked by a table to see a patron pulling a bone out of their
choosing the activity or where to go to dinner– but that doesn’t make the competition any less intense. “Instead of flipping a coin, we play for it,” Fleck said. “It’s our way of compromising in our marriage.” That same competitive gene has been passed on to the Fleck children as well. There’s plenty of friendly competition in yard games, video games, and yes, all sports! As competitive as they are, Heather and PJ made a pact long ago that they would not coach their children in sports. “We want

them to stay focused on getting better, not worried about pleasing us.” said Fleck. “We learn the names of all the kids on the team, and we cheer all of them on.”
it. Too often with public figures we only see them as a figure and not as a person. “Everybody wants me to win; I want to win,” Fleck said. “Coaching is what I do, it’s not who I am.”
When it comes to sports, the Flecks never focus on the outcome of the game with their children, instead they focus on the process. PJ and Heather never ask them if they won or lost, even though the kids always want to tell them about the score. “We ask them, ‘Were you a good teammate?’ ‘What did you get better at today?’ ‘What do you need to work on?’” said Fleck. “I’ve never asked them, ‘Did you win?’ That does not matter.” Of course winning is great, but it all goes back to sportsmanship. Keeping score is a part of life but the final score isn’t as important as how you played the game. “Teaching kids about how you win is really important. If a kid never knows the feeling of failing, they’ll never be successful.” Says Fleck.
Keep Rowing Four years ago, the Gophers were playing at Michigan and they lost 33 to 10. PJ had just come from West Michigan so everyone there knew who he was. After the game, PJ was walking into the tunnel with his son under his arm when the Michigan fans went off. For the next minute and a half, the Michigan crowd doused him with insults that could fill a dictionary of complete hate; words his nine year-old son should never have to hear. PJ looked down to see his son bawling and his son asked, “Why are they saying all those things about you?” That’s when this coach switches back to dad mode and becomes emotional. As difficult as this situation was for PJ, he knows that there’s always a lesson to be learned. “If people are going to say those things, they probably don’t know your dad.” Fleck remarked. “They’re not necessarily attacking me, they’re attacking the job I do, which is very public.” While PJ is just another dad on the sidelines for his kids’ little league games, he’s still a high-profile sports figure with all the baggage that comes with

The dial of this Day-Date 36 is meticulously set with 450 diamonds that surround coral-colored Roman numerals to create a striking aesthetic.
Often known as the watch’s face, the dial of a watch is imbued with a spirit and vitality that adorns the timepiece with its distinct style and aesthetic. Aside from displaying functions and indicators of time, the dial gives a watch its unique personality and a true identity of its own. Undoubtedly the most recognizable watch brand, Rolex offers a wide range of professional and classic watches to suit any style. Each model in the Rolex collection has its own distinct persona, with much of its character attributed to the color and composition of its dial. The range and richness of colors that adorn Rolex dials are the result of a mixture of age-old materials combined with cutting-edge technology. Dial creation is nothing short of an art form, requiring both great artistic expertise and use of state-of-the-art technology. From design to production,

every Rolex dial is created in-house and largely by hand to ensure perfection. Designers and watchmakers work closely together in the subtle exercise of finding a balance between aesthetic and technical requirements. When a designer requests a particular color, it often takes a qualified chemist or physicist to know which avenues to explore to match the color. It also takes at least three months of laboratory research and trials to produce the requisite hue. Featuring bright hues in a veritable rainbow of colors, each dial variation is a testament to the eminently high standards Rolex applies to its production process. The unrivaled dedication to fine watchmaking is always on display with countless unique variations in color, texture and motifs exclusive to Rolex.
Incorporating one of Rolex’s signature aesthetic styles, the new Datejust 36 showcases a golden, fluted motif dial.
This Day-Date 40 is highlighted by an Eisenkeisel dial, a type of quartz displaying rich and warm veins that intersect across the dial.
The concept of multiple discovery theorizes that inventions and discoveries are often achieved independently by several people, at roughly the same time. This phenomenon is evident in the history of watchmaking as it is often not clear who should get the credit for certain innovations. Take the chronograph for example, which is a timepiece that includes a stopwatch function. Two Frenchmen, Louis Moinet and Nicolas Rieussec, both created chronographs within five years of each other in the 1800s. The first developed his mechanism to time the passage of stars and planets while the latter was a “Watchmaker to the King” and debuted his timing apparatus at a public horse race in Paris. Chronographs went on to become one of the most important watch complications, often used as essential tools across disciplines such as astronomy, marine navigation, flight, exploration, science, medicine, military, and sports. When every second matters, the chronograph is the watch for the job. While functionality remains an important feature of contemporary chronographs, they also have to have bold aesthetics to capture today’s watch buyer. With their heritage of performance, TUDOR is known to make some of the finest looking and best performing chronograph watches out there. TUDOR’s chronograph history dates back to 1970 when the brand introduced the sporty Oysterdate chronograph. Since then, TUDOR has released numerous chronograph collections in a range of styles. In 2020, two new Black Bay Chrono models joined the lineup to celebrate 50 years of TUDOR chronographs.
The dial of the new Black Bay Chrono is where the fashionable and functional aspects of the watch converge in harmony. The dial houses a 45-minute chronograph counter at three o’clock, a small seconds indicator at nine o’clock, and a date window positioned at six o’clock. There are two dial color pairings to choose from: white with black subdials, affectionately known as the “Panda” dial, and black with white subdials, aptly nicknamed the “Reverse Panda” dial. Both versions include luminous round and triangular hour markers and “snowflake” style hands—a signature of the Black Bay collection. The crystal that shields the dial is vintage-inspired with its domed shape, yet the scratch-resistant synthetic sapphire material is entirely modern.
SIGNATURE STYLING
Sporty and stylish, the newest Black Bay Chrono models feature 41mm stainless steel cases with both satin-brushed and high-polished finishes. Contrasting with the steel case is a black anodized aluminum bezel insert with a tachymeter scale, which can be used in conjunction with the center chronograph hand to calculate the hourly average speed between two points.

THE WIXON EXPERIENCE
Powering the pair of Black Bay Chrono watches is TUDOR’s in-house Caliber MT5813 automatic chronograph movement. Not only is this movement certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) as a chronometer but it also supplies the watches with 70 hours of power reserve.
WRAPPING THE WRIST
In addition to dial colors, there are also three bracelet options available. The first is a classic stainless steel bracelet, complete with exposed rivets on the links as a nod to vintage TUDOR bracelets from the 1950’s and 1960’s. There’s also the option of a bund cuff crafted in aged black leather with ecru topstitching and a folding clasp. Finally, the Black Bay Chrono is also available with a black Jacquard-woven fabric strap, manufactured by Julien Faure—a 150-year old French family business that uses 19th-Century Jacquard looms. With a selection of two dials and three bracelets, the new Black Bay Chrono is available in six different configurations. Regardless of the specific style, TUDOR has successfully recalibrated vintage-inspired design touches into high-performing and modern watches in the form of the Black Bay Chrono.
PATEK PHILIPPE CALATRAVA “CLOUS DE PARIS” A well-curated watch collection should include a minimum of three watch styles to cover almost any occasion: an everyday watch, a sports watch, and a dress watch. The look of the dress watch is particularly important since it must flawlessly pair with formal wear. Not only should a formal watch be timeless and subtle (less is more here) but it must also be slim enough to slip under a shirt cuff. As one of the finest dress watches available today, the Calatrava from Patek Philippe is universally recognized as the quintessential expression of the round wristwatch. Supremely elegant with pure lines and exquisite detailing, it has established itself as one of the most beautiful manifestations of timeless elegance.
Introduced in 1932, the Calatrava has become Patek Philippe’s signature dress watch collection by faithfully following the Bauhaus design principle of form following function. As a result, the defining features of Patek Philippe’s Calatrava watches are slim round cases and understated legible dials. Some of the most recognizable Calatrava models have been those embellished with guilloched hobnail bezels, a decorative design known as “Clous de Paris” in French. The first Calatrava model with a Clous de Paris bezel dates back to 1934, and Patek Philippe has regularly returned to this distinctive design feature for select Calatrava models.

A NEW CALIBER
With their 2021 debut, the Ref. 6119 Calatrava “Clous de Paris” establishes a new milestone in the history of Patek Philippe’s most famous timepiece collection with a pair of new timepieces. The Ref. 6119G in 18k white gold and the Ref. 6119R in 18k rose gold represent the newest Calatrava models to showcase the Clous de Paris bezel. The new watches feature a larger 39mm case size to suit modern preferences for larger-sized watches. Despite the larger diameter, measuring just 8.08mm thick, the cases retain the slender profile integral to the Calatrava collection. The refined case design further highlights its defining design feature, an intricately decorated bezel with a guilloched hobnail pattern that is both striking to see and a pleasure to touch.
The caseback is furnished with a sapphire crystal to display the beautifully decorated and entirely new manual-wind movement housed within. The new movement, Caliber 30-255 PS, is larger than its predecessors and now accommodates two mainspring barrels instead of one. This translates to a longer power reserve of 65 hours while still retaining the hallmark accuracy of -3/+2 seconds per day. This new movement is fitted with a hacking feature, allowing the second hand to stop when the winding crown is pulled out, which enables hyper-accurate time setting. Staying true to Patek Philippe’s commitment to excellence, this new movement harmoniously pairs exacting performance with superior aesthetics. The movement is flawlessly decorated and finished with details such as Geneva striping, chamfered surfaces, and polished edges.
The larger case provides more room for the dial too, which is beautifully balanced and sublimely finished. The Dauphine-style hour and minute hands sweep around the dial to point to applied faceted “obus” (French for artillery shell) hour markers, complete with double markers at 12 o’clock. Completing the look of the highly legible dial is a small seconds indicator positioned at six o’clock and a railway-track minute scale that runs along the periphery of the dial. The Ref. 6119R in rose gold houses a beautiful silvery-grained dial and the Ref. 6119G in white gold is styled with a striking charcoal gray dial.
In keeping with Calatrava tradition, the new models are fitted with alligator leather straps that have substantial square scales. The rose gold version is paired with a chocolate brown strap, and the white gold edition has a shiny black strap; each equipped with a matching 18k gold pin buckle. The Reference 6119 is a worthy successor to the long line of Calatrava “Clous de Paris” models that came before it, and is the ideal timepiece to introduce a new generation to Patek Philippe’s famed dress watch.

SUPERLATIVE The enduring excellence of Rolex
The green seal accompanying every Rolex watch is a symbol of its status as a Superlative Chronometer. This exclusive designation attests that it has successfully undergone a series of specific final controls by Rolex in addition to the official COSC certification. 52
THE WIXON EXPERIENCE
Rolex. Is there another brand more recognizable, respected, and evocative than that simple, five-letter name? This Swiss marque, founded in London by a German in 1908, has grown into a symbol of quality, luxury, and precision the world over. But what makes Rolex so special? In an age of smartphones and connected watches, is it still relevant or a relic of a bygone era? Is it all hype? Let’s unwrap the legend that is Rolex and see what makes these watches so iconic and sought after.
A CROWN FOR EVERY ACHIEVEMENT It’s no exaggeration to say that most of the twentieth century’s great achievements were timed by Rolex watches: speed records, sailing and mountaineering exploits, polar expeditions and deep sea discoveries. Kings, presidents, actors, artists, and rebel leaders have all favored Rolex watches while making history. Why is this? Because since its beginnings, Rolex has had a dual focus on durability and precision. In pursuit of these goals, the company pioneered two of watchmaking’s most important technologies: water resistance and the self-winding Perpetual rotor. And while these specific traits may not be known by those who’ve bought and worn these watches, they have led Rolex’s reputation for excellence, which continues into the twenty-first century. For many people, to have the Rolex crown on one’s wrist is an aspirational goal, and a worthy one. Long a symbol of achievement, a Rolex has been a traditional gift given at a graduation, wedding, or professional milestone. And while finally wearing one might say, “you’ve made it,” it also says, “you’ve still got work to do and this is the watch to wear while you do it.” Good thing the watches are up to the challenge. Rolex has spent over a century making sure of that.
IMPENETRABLE
As far back as the 1920s, Rolex recognized that the greatest threats to the workings of a mechanical watch are dust and moisture. Watch cases had snap-on backs and fragile winding crowns. Rolex came up with a hermetically sealed case using its patented system of screwing down the bezel, case back and winding crown against the middle case to seal in the movement and seal out the elements. It was called the “Oyster” case and would become Rolex’s best known invention, one that is still used today. Then came the winding crown made up of 10 parts and screwed hermetically onto the watch case, further protecting the movement from intrusion. Hand in hand with this, Rolex pioneered the “Perpetual” self-winding mechanical movement that, if worn regularly on the wrist, would keep the watch wound. The watch can remain, sealed and wound on the wrist, impervious to the harsh world outside. The Oyster case and winding crown led Rolex to the development of the most important “tool” watches of the twentieth century—the Explorer, the Submariner, and the GMT-Master. The Submariner was a benchmark for water resistance and its descendants, the Sea-Dweller and the Deepsea, have gone even deeper. Continued evolution of these diving watches—better gaskets, thicker crystals, and better sealing systems— has led to positively abyssal depth ratings, far beyond what the human body can withstand.
ON TIME, EVERY TIME But what good is a watertight movement if it keeps terrible time? Rolex has always paid equal attention to precision as it has to durability and the clue to this are those words on the dial: “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified.” A chronometer is a class of watch

deemed accurate enough to use for celestial navigation. There have long been accuracy competitions and certifications for such timekeepers, first with clocks, then large pocketwatches, but then Rolex became the very first to produce a wristwatch certified as a chronometer. To be called a chronometer, according to the COSC certifying body in Switzerland, a watch must be accurate to within minus 4 to plus 6 seconds over a 24-hour period in a variety of positions. To put that into perspective, this represents an accuracy of 99.995%. But Rolex holds its watches to an even higher standard and the “Superlative” part of that famous phrase means that the movement has exceeded the parameters of the official COSC certifications and successfully undergone a series of specific final controls by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria.
THE INVISIBLE ENEMY
While keeping water out of the movement was accomplished fairly early on, the other, more insidious force that can affect a watch’s performance is magnetism. These days, that threat is everywhere: in our phones, speakers, tablets, and laptops. The powerful magnets in these devices can cause the fragile coils of a watch’s hairspring to stick together, making it run fast. In the 1950s, Rolex created a watch called the Milgauss, with a soft iron inner case to protect the movement from magnets. It became a favorite of scientists for its imperviousness around their equipment. In the past decade, Rolex has made even greater strides in the battle against magnetism, even eliminating the need for the inner case. The hairspring itself, made from a proprietary material called Parachrom in the larger movements and Syloxi in the smaller, which is immune to the forces of magnets.
MATERIAL SCIENCE
Gaskets, movements, and hairsprings aside, in the end, it’s the watch we see on our wrists that makes the first impression. Rolex knows this and has made great strides in the development and use of modern materials and alloys to keep its watches looking good and staying
If the dial is the face of the watch, the appliques are the features that give depth to its personality. Paved with 291 diamonds, the dial of this Lady-Datejust features elegant 18k yellow gold Roman numerals with a black finish.

functional through thick and thin. In the early 2000s, it pioneered the use of 904L stainless steel for its sports watches, an even stronger, more corrosion resistant alloy than the more common surgical grade 316L used on most other steel watches. For the timing and tachymetric bezels, Rolex turned away from aluminum inserts to use its own “Cerachrom”, a laser engraved and filled ceramic that is one of the hardest materials on the planet. This makes the bezels impossible to scratch and fade resistant, no matter the exposure to sun and saltwater. A gold Rolex is the quintessence of luxury and refinement, and virtually a currency of its own. Rolex knows this well, and 20 years ago opened its own foundry to control the quality of the gold it uses to make some of its most iconic watches. Gold can vary in its properties and appearance and for Rolex, consistency is king, which led to the creation of unique alloys for use in its watches. Everose, Rolex’s proprietary version of pink gold, was developed to preserve the unique warm hue and shimmer over the lifetime of a watch, no small feat since pink gold has a tendency to fade over time. So that Everose Daytona you pass down to an heir in 20, 30, 40 years will look as good as good then as it did the day you first fastened it on your own wrist.
THE TRUE MEANING OF LUXURY Everywhere from Kathmandu to Buenos Aires, to New York, and yes, Minneapolis, the single word, “Rolex,” which founder Hans Wilsdorf chose to be easy to pronounce and memorable, is recognized and conjures the same image: prestige, luxury and good taste. And that’s not because of flashy marketing or movie placements or celebrity ambassadors. It is down to the power of consistency. Rolex has methodically evolved its watches over a century to be precise, rugged, and handsome on any wrist in any scenario, constantly innovating, refining, improving along the way. The resulting quality has made it the choice of militaries, explorers, heads of state and tastemakers who recognize that understated quality is the true meaning of luxury. Rolex is, in a word, superlative.
PORSCHE 911 TURBO S What can I say, if this car doesn’t move you… you may not have a pulse. When I first saw this car, I was stunned. That doesn’t happen to me often. Super sporty yet drivable, the new Porsche 911 Turbo S is no garage queen. It puts up supercar numbers and is blindingly fast. Kurt Carr, the handsome devil who owns this beast, had his eye on the Turbo S for years until the right one finally came along. He nailed the color—it’s called Gentian Blue. The color is absolute perfection on a car, and Wixon knows color! (Had to get my marketing plug in!) Thirty years ago, Kurt had a Porsche that really moved him and he never forgot that special feeling he had driving it. That car spoke to him. This car doesn’t speak—it shouts. It’s not designed to be a track car, but it is a super performer.
BY DAN WIXON
Not being a track car allows it to be more comfortable so you can drive it… a lot. If it was mine, I sure would. The interior is classy, but not too complicated, with gorgeous design elements crafted from the finest materials. It’s surprisingly comfortable to sit in, which is hard to do in a car that looks this good and is this fast. Need all the performance numbers? Go online; we don’t have room here. My visceral reaction to this car said it all for me. Kurt offered to let me drive it, but I wouldn’t. If I drove it, I might not come back. What if something happened? It’d be my fault and I’d have to buy him a new one. Worst of all, I know I’d want one… badly. And I’d have to copy Kurt’s, which I never do, so it’s best to stay out of it.

Characteristics COLLECTIBLE
ven casual observers of watch collecting couldn’t help but have noticed the popularity and influence of vintage timepieces in the past decade. Paul Newman’s Rolex Daytona famously sold at auction for over 17 million dollars. Financial advisors are recommending watches as material investment strategies. Even among the biggest brands like Tudor, Omega, and Panerai, heritage inspired designs find their way into the latest novelties. Nostalgia is popular right now, for a number of reasons, and there’s nothing more nostalgic than a vintage watch on your wrist.
SUSTAINABLE MEMORIES
The mechanical wristwatch is a model of sustainability and of lasting value in a world of ever increasing disposability. Maintained and treated well, it can be worn daily almost in perpetuity, passed down through generations. What other manmade object has such lasting appeal, charm and yes, utility? Cars rust away and are discarded. Clothing falls victim to the moth, the ravages of time, and shifting fashions. But a wristwatch, first worn by a soldier, a pilot, a scientist, or an actor decades ago, will still tell you the time, ticking on your wrist daily. This durability and, shall we say, timelessness are part of the appeal of owning a vintage watch.
PATINA
Referred to as patina, this wear demonstrates that the watch has led an interesting life and has not been overly restored– originality is a feature that collectors prefer. Plus, patina creates a unique beauty that simply cannot be replicated.
Strap on a Rolex Submariner from the 1960s, an Omega chronograph from the early ’70s or even a classic Cartier from the ’40s and the timepiece ties you to a lineage of those who wore it before, even if you have no idea who its previous owners were. The imagination runs wild. Where was it first acquired? A dive shop in Long Beach perhaps, or a Navy PX in the Philippines, maybe a jeweler in Zurich for a special occasion. Even when the origins or provenance are not known, the speculation is endlessly intriguing. Sometimes a caseback is cryptically engraved with a date, maybe some initials, a dedication, or a declaration of love. A prominent dent is a mystery never to be solved, yet leads to countless theories. A watch is a tangible collector of memories. The mere fact that it is powered by its wearer, either through hand winding or the movement of the arm, and marches out the passage of time, is more than metaphor. Every scratch on the case is a scar, a reminder of a hike, a dive to a shipwreck, the birth of a child, a new house, the achievement of a job or a college degree. When we acquire a vintage timepiece and continue to wear it, we make it our own, adding to that collection of memories and move it forward in time, until we pass it on to someone else.
CAVEAT EMPTOR
SPIDER DIAL
A spider dial is a special type of aging that occurred on the early glossy dials which led some dials to experience a cracking or crazing effect. This was typically corrected by Rolex at subsequent servicing so it is not something we see very often!
If you’re not lucky enough to acquire a vintage watch through family inheritance or finding it buried in the sand on a beach, odds are you’re going to be buying it. And that can be a daunting proposition, a confusing minefield of botched restorations, questionable provenance, fake components, and mechanical can of worms. With a new watch, you more than likely purchase it through an authorized dealer, with the built-in assurances of authenticity and reliability. But wading into the realm of vintage timepieces, things are less clear. The rising value of vintage watches in recent years has brought forth the predictable crop of less than scrupulous sellers with watches often composed of a mish-mash of cobbled parts—so called “Frankenwatches”— inexpert restorations and servicing, and inflated prices. The best advice to anyone seeking to buy vintage is, “buy the seller before you buy the watch.” Two watch words for those looking to get into vintage are, “originality” and “condition.” Seasoned collectors will tell you that a scratched up and faded watch that hasn’t had new hands and dial fitted, or the case polished smooth, will be more desirable and valuable in the long term, over one that has been excessively restored. This may seem contrary to our modern sensibilities that tell us to make old things new again. But it also doesn’t mean the watch is neglected. It’s borderline criminal to leave a mechanical watch’s movement unserviced, its oils dried up and its seals disintegrated. It is a fine balance.
TROPICAL DIAL
Sporting an evenly faded dark chocolate tone, this unusual byproduct of age is the byproduct of intense exposure to UV light. A Tropical dial is highly coveted by collectors due to the rarity, uniqueness, and aesthetics of the uniform color change.

BUY THE SELLER
Wixon Jewelers has many years of experience with vintage watches. Founder Dan Wixon himself is a longtime passionate collector, and the store’s service department has seasoned watchmakers who’ve been entrusted by loyal customers to keep their heirlooms running. Servicing vintage watches is not as straightforward as with modern timepieces. Some owners prefer to keep dials and hands untouched, preserving their hard won patina. Others feel the same with the case itself, asking that the metal not be polished, favoring the scratches and dents that come with decades of regular wear. Sourcing original replacement parts can be challenging, and in some situations, it can be necessary to craft movement components for obsolete watch references, an art in itself. And while we never recommend taking vintage dive watches underwater, some of our customers (this author included) have requested an old Submariner be brought up to original spec so it can carry on its intended purpose. Wixon sources its inventory from various places, but often from trades or purchases from existing clientele. In every case, all watches for sale in the vintage showcase have been scrutinized for authenticity, originality and then examined and serviced for impeccable functionality. As a long time Rolex and Patek Philippe retailer, Wixon favors those brands for vintage sales, but also carries historic Heuers, Omegas, and other important marques, all receiving the same meticulous care and attention.

AN INVESTMENT YOU CAN WEAR
As vintage watch values continue to climb, a timepiece from a reputable Swiss brand can be a legitimate addition to an investment portfolio. Of course, as with any investment, there’s no predicting the future, but particularly watches from Patek and Rolex have seen steady gains in the recent past, to the point where they can almost be called a “sure bet.” But the beauty of this kind of investment is, a watch is one that can be worn and enjoyed, whether for special occasions or even as a daily companion. And by doing so, you add to its history and its provenance, while it times the important moments of your life, and those to whom you pass it on. It is, quite literally, a time machine.

ceans cover over 70% of our planet; and although they are immense and powerful, our oceans are also vulnerable to a multitude of environmental threats. Of the 300 million tons of plastic produced annually, it’s estimated that 8-10 million tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean every year. At a time when the environmental impact of plastic has become impossible to ignore, Panerai is making a strong push towards a more environmentally-friendly future. The brand with Italian origins has deep historical links to a marine environment that is seriously affected today, particularly by the damage caused by plastic. Ecological awareness, which has already transformed the way everyday products are presented, perceived and consumed, is now increasingly impacting the world of luxury.

SUSTAINABLE STEEL
A pioneer of advancements in contemporary watchmaking for generations, Panerai has consistently created timepieces incorporating materials and technologies with transformative and far-reaching impact. With their aquatic heritage, Panerai is always experimenting with new materials and ways to promote ocean conservation. The development of eSteel is one of the most remarkable technical achievements in the brand’s history. Composed of recycled-based materials, eSteel is an advancement that represents a step in Panerai’s commitment to reduce the need for virgin material extraction and its high environmental impact. The case and dial of Luminor Marina eSteel feature a new recycled steel alloy with a total of 89g (or 58.4%) of the watch’s components made of recycled-based materials. It required close coordination with suppliers to ensure the material matched the physical properties of the other virgin materials. Although it’s composed of recycled material, eSteel has the same chemical behavior, physical structure and corrosion resistance as a non-recycled alloy. The greatest icons evolve over time, and the Luminor is no exception. Even with new materials, these models retain their unique aesthetic.
SAFEGUARDING OUR SEAS
In their quest to expand sustainability, Panerai has partnered with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO to
develop ocean literacy activities for the UN’s Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. The partnership will develop programs and actions with the final objective of developing transformative solutions to the existing and future challenges that face the ocean. The goal is to embrace a more responsible mindset and behavior towards the ocean and its preservation by developing educational and research initiatives that provide values and knowledge while enhancing an active community. The partnership will develop a program of work around ocean literacy to ensure that citizens, stakeholders and institutions understand their interaction with the ocean and apply this knowledge to develop transformative solutions toward building a more sustainable society. Existing at the nexus of two of Panerai’s prime fields of expertise—continued innovation and respect for the marine world—this partnership reflects a devotion to conservation and a commitment to a sustainable environment with healthy oceans. With the introduction of eSteel, Panerai is poised to lead a movement toward more environmentally responsible watch manufacturing. In its efforts to develop solutions to the ocean plastic crisis, Panerai is intent on spreading knowledge and awareness of the current plight of our oceans. MASTER CONTROL DATE
MASTER CONTROL GEOGRAPHIC
For the last 30 years, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Master Control collection has been defined by technical rigor and stylistic restraint. Its constant evolution has been imbued with Jaeger-LeCoultre’s deep respect for tradition and constant quest for innovation. They recently relaunched the entire collection, drawing inspiration from the classic round watches of the 1950s while adding a dash of 21st-century flair. Rather than paying homage to a single historic reference, Jaeger-LeCoultre presents a range of timepieces featuring some of the brand’s most emblematic complications. The new Master Control collection features a host of complications including the classic date, the triple calendar, the legendary Geographic, and for the first time, a chronograph with a triple calendar display and moonphase.
TIMELESS DESIGN WITH A CONTEMPORARY TWIST
Reflecting a modern interpretation of its classic design, every element of the Master Control collection has been restyled. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s designers have harnessed and modernized the design to create a refined yet entirely contemporary aesthetic. With its 40mm diameter, outwardly sloping bezel and dynamically curved lugs, the new Master Control case exudes a relaxed and understated elegance. The satin-brushed sides of the case are complemented by a polished bezel, crowns and lugs to complete its stunning case design. On the dials, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s designers reinterpreted the classical codes into a streamlined and modern style while highlighting the complications of each model. The applied indexes add refinement—their elongated triangular shape is echoed by the Dauphine hands. Uniting the collection, a sunray-brushed finish animates the silvery-white dial, while a blue central seconds hand adds a subtle pop of color. With its refined appearance and clean design, the new collection remains timeless yet absolutely contemporary.
NEW MATERIALS & MOVEMENTS
The versatility of the new collection is underlined by the choice of two case materials– stainless steel and a new pink gold alloy called Le Grand Rose Gold. Seen for the first time in this new collection, Le Grand Rose Gold has a remarkable sheen and depth of color. The addition of palladium to the metal’s proprietary formula

guards against oxidation and ensures that the radiant color will not fade over the years. The straps have also been re-worked for the new collection. To complement the timeless informality of the steel cases, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s designers have chosen the soft, matte finish of Novonappa calf leather in tan. Produced by the finest tannery in France, through a vegetable-based tanning process that retains the natural variations of the hides, Novonappa develops a distinctive patina over time. Classic alligator leather in black or chocolate brown lends a more formal allure to the Le Grand Rose Gold cases, which can also be fitted with a Novonappa strap. Thanks to a Presto Spring lug attachment and a simple clip for removing and refitting the deployant buckle, the straps can be quickly changed without the need for any tool.
1,000 HOURS CONTROL
When launched in 1992, the Master Control line was the first of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s collections to benefit from its pioneering “1,000 Hours Control” certification, which inspired the collection’s name. A demanding process that tests the entire cased-up watch (not just its movement), the certification has continually evolved in response to technological advances to remain one of the watch industry’s most stringent testing protocols. With its heritage and long history of technical innovation, the relaunch of the Master Control collection is not simply an aesthetic update. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s engineers have comprehensively revised and re-engineered Calibre 899, the high-performing movement in the Master Control collection, with the goal of improving reliability, power reserve and long-term performance. The improvements, which have been incorporated into the entire range of Master Control movements, include a silicon escapement, a redesigned barrel and various energy-saving enhancements. Like all Jaeger-LeCoultre timepieces, the Master Control watches carry an eight-year warranty in addition to the 1,000 Hours Control certification. Inspired by the past and redesigned in the confident spirit of the 21st century, the new Master Control collection combines the creativity and technical prowess of Jaeger-LeCoultre. Blending timeless style with the relaxed elegance of modern urban living, this collection is destined to become a point of reference in contemporary watchmaking. THE WIXON EXPERIENCE

With their calm candor, warm spirit and desire to please, dogs have a special way of bringing immense joy to our lives. The joyful exuberance of our four-legged friends seem to always cheer us up, but can a dog save a life? At Believet Canine Service Providers, they have found that service dogs provide immense comfort and support to Veterans suffering with PTSD. Since 2015, Sam Daly and the team at Believet have been training service dogs for military service members suffering with combat-related injuries and disabilities. More than simply a pet, these animals provide crucial services to Veterans to help them seamlessly re-adjust to the normal world at home.
NOT ALL WOUNDS ARE VISIBLE
After serving in the most emotionally and physically extreme environments imaginable, these Veterans are not the same person when they come home. Returning to an unfamiliar world where even the grocery store can be an obstacle, simply being around crowds can spur anxiety and panic attacks. Many of these struggling Veterans are looking for a solution to post-traumatic stress but often feel that Veterans Affairs doesn’t have answers for them. They want help, not just another pill. Instead of being dependent on medications, these service animals provide a non-drug therapy that help Veterans improve their lives and be able to cope with situations when anxiety kicks in. Service dogs accompany their Veterans anywhere the general public are allowed, including supermarkets, restaurants and places of entertainment, among many others. From nightmare interruption to lessening anxiety, well-trained service dogs can provide Veterans living with PTSD wide-ranging help that can allow them to return to a better adjusted life.
SAVING TWO LIVES AT ONCE
Haunted by an overwhelming fear of imminent danger, many Veterans experience traumatic life-threatening dreams. One of the most requested skills is nightmare interruption. The dogs are specifically trained to react when their partners are having nightmares by turning on a light and pulling off the blankets to wake them up, gently alleviating night terrors. They are also trained to rest their heads firmly in their partner’s lap during times of anxiety to provide instant calm and relief. The dog acts in a way that lets their partner know that everything is going to be okay; no matter what’s going on in that moment, the dog is there for you… you’ve got this.
The Veterans Administration approximates 20% of Veterans experience symptoms of PTSD which means there are roughly

THE WIXON EXPERIENCE
Believet provides these highly-skilled assistance dogs, free of charge, to disabled Veterans. The organization plays a critical role in not only training and preparing the dogs, but also matching and partnering Veterans with dogs and providing ongoing support afterwards. All of the animals in the program have been rescued and adopted from shelters, meaning that two lives are saved—not just the Veteran, but also the dog.
20,000 Veterans with PTSD within a 250 mile radius of Believet’s facility in Northfield, MN. Despite the growing body of research and anecdotal evidence that supports the value and benefits of these animals, the government and insurance companies will not cover the cost. Believet has a goal to match 20-25 dogs with Veterans each year, and as a non-profit, they rely on the generosity of others to continue functioning. While it costs around $30,000 to train each service dog, the impact it has on the Veteran’s life is absolutely priceless. These brave Veterans have served our country and now it’s our turn to serve them. Along with their faithful four-legged battle buddy, the battle scars of these Veterans finally have a chance to heal.

rom graduations and weddings to career promotions and business achievements, new watches are frequently purchased to mark momentous milestones. However, acquiring a vintage timepiece that was made in the same year or decade that you were born is an exceptionally distinctive watch to wear. The birth year watch is a celebration of you; a beautiful object that can simultaneously symbolize gratitude for the past and excitement for the future. Plus, it’s always fun to be reminded of what was in style during the decade that you came into the world. If you don’t already own a birth year timepiece, it’s a wonderful nostalgic gift to give yourself. Think of it as the ultimate personalized time-teller.
F
Your place in time A birth year watch is essentially a timepiece that was made the same year you were born. It is not necessarily a watch model that was released that year, but one that was manufactured sometime that year. For instance, the Rolex Submariner made its debut in 1953, and the model continues to be a mainstay of the brand’s current catalog. Therefore, you can hunt down a birth year Rolex Submariner from any year from 1953 until present-day; but knowing what reference number was in production during a specific year is certainly helpful. Pinpointing the exact manufacturing year of a vintage watch can sometimes be challenging—especially if you have a particular model in mind. So, another great approach is to find a birth decade watch. Expanding your parameters to an entire decade offers a much wider assortment of brands and models to choose from.

THE WIXON EXPERIENCE
Born in the 1950s? You can take your pick from mid-century classics like the Patek Philippe Calatrava, Rolex Oyster Perpetual, and Omega Seamaster. 1960’s babies can go for sporty chronographs like the Rolex Daytona, Omega Speedmaster, and Breitling Navitimer or iconic tool watches like the Rolex GMT-Master and Tudor Submariner. The timepieces of the 1970s had an aesthetic that’s still highly desirable today, largely characterized by bold angular cases, sharp dials, and distinctive bracelet designs. The Patek Philippe Nautilus, Rolex Oysterquartz, and Heuer Monaco are fantastic examples of that super cool seventies style. Finally, the power watches that ruled the 1980s were the models like the Rolex Day-Date, Omega Constellation, Cartier Santos, and Piaget Polo—preferably in solid yellow gold or two-tone variants. Remember, regardless of your birth decade, you can always go for models that were released in an earlier era but still in production during your time.
Horological Heirlooms Since luxury watches are built to last several lifetimes, your birth year watch can become a family heirloom. It’s one that you’d be proud to pass on to the next generation and the lucky recipient will be reminded of the giver with every glance at the watch. There’s a certain magic to a vintage watch that can’t always be replicated with a modern one. If you’re a relatively new parent, you can also buy your child a birth year watch now with the intention of gifting it on a future milestone birthday. Whether or not you choose to wear it in the meantime (after all, a child’s birth is a significant moment in a parent’s life too) is entirely up to you.
WATC H MODEL RELEAS E YEAR S When searching for a birth year watch, it’s important to know when certain models were introduced to ensure that it’s possible to get one that was made the same year you were born. Here are the release years for some popular vintage watches to keep in mind.

THE WIXON EXPERIENCE
a man, his motors, and the outdoors From sports cars to fine timepieces, some of our favorite mechanical machines simply could not function without the use of mechanical gears. Hundreds of components must come together and harmoniously work in consort to power these highly precise and technical machines. With a love for all things mechanical, our lead watchmaker, Len Karter, epitomizes the definition of a gearhead.
Watching Marlon Brando in the Wild One is what sparked Len’s love for motorcycles and inspired him to purchase his first motorcycle when he was just fifteen years old. Although unlike Brando’s character, Len didn’t ride a Harley; his first bike was a Yamaha 60. “Back then it was mostly Honda motorcycles. There was a Yamaha called the Big Bear that was cool, but Harleys weren’t popular with us.”
Len has been a certified watchmaker for over 45 years, and has become one of the most highly respected and well-known watchmakers in the entire industry. He was awarded Horologist of the Year by the Minnesota Watch and Clock Association, Best Watchmaker by Mpls St. Paul Magazine, and he is enshrined on the Wall of Fame at St. Paul College. While he holds a myriad of certifications and awards for watchmaking, that isn’t the only passion in his life.
After becoming a father, Len’s mindset shifted from taking his bike out for joyrides to putting it up for sale in order to pay for a driveway. He decided early on that he wanted to share his love for riding with his daughters when they were little. After each of his daughters turned five, Len would buy them their own four-wheeler—a tradition that he has continued with his grandchildren today.
“I don’t ride
for the speed. I ride for the solitude, the scenery.
Combining exhilaration, freedom and relaxation, the experience of riding a motorcycle is a physical and emotional pleasure with the added layer of anxiety and adrenaline. But for Len, riding a motorcycle has always been less about the speed and more about the experience. With the smell of the air and the rumble of the road, riding simply sparks your senses in a way that nothing else really can. Along with seeing rainbows after just getting caught in the rain, the simple act of sitting on a park bench with a Coca-Cola and watching boats on the Mississippi is all part of the experience.
“
When he’s not rebuilding gear trains and working with tiny gears to repair watches, he can usually be found shifting gears and burning rubber. In his eyes, there’s no better way to spend a beautiful afternoon than by enjoying what only a motor, two wheels and the great outdoors have to offer. “My favorite part of riding has to be the freedom… it’s that whole sense of freedom when it’s just you and your bike.”
As a true gearhead, Len’s love for motors extends beyond two-wheeled machines. He is extremely passionate about cars and realized early on that he didn’t need to have a supercar to have the passion for supercars. His first sports car was a 1966 Corvette Stingray, followed by an MG, and his current baby is his Porsche 911. Propelling his love for freedom into the clouds, Len received his private pilot’s license when he was 30. Although he doesn’t get to fly much due to the expense, he says there is nothing quite like being in the air. The stimulation that occurs when all of your senses are perked is what makes flying and driving so exhilarating to him. In Len’s eyes, watchmaking, driving and flying are all integrated together as hobbies of precision. Len has accomplished a great deal throughout his life, but his humble nature and natural kindness towards others is what makes him such an incredible person. Although several years and motorcycles have come and gone, the passion for the freedom of the open road has remained the same.
