2 • SPRING 2022 • TOGETHER WE CAN

What If We Could? — Together We Can! Together We Can is an annual publication featuring local nonprofits here in Central Oregon, each with initiatives for the remainder of 2022. Initiatives include giveback activities such as; volunteering, in-kind giving, small fundraisers or participating in an event.

By utilizing this guide, businesses and members of the community will be connected directly to actions and causes they feel passionately about, increasing community engagement and helping people work together.

The Together We Can printed guide was created by the online crowdsourcing platform WhatIfWeCould.com, uniting individuals, nonprofits, and businesses to increase awareness and support key initiatives. The platform allows nonprofits to do exactly that, create campaigns for in-kind giving, volunteering, event participation, and fundraising projects. The Together We Can printed guide and WhatIfWeCould.com offers those who want to give back a direct way to do so, easily connecting them with the organizations that need their help.

In addition to the importance of the website and the printed Together We Can guide, WhatIfWeCould also created a community event; Shop 4 a Cause - which debuted here in July 2021 to much success. During the private shopping event, over $20,000 was purchased at Costco to support 20 local nonprofits with supplies they need year around. Please get out your calendar and make plans to participate in July again this year.

Thank you so much for picking up this guide and fighting to improve your community. Please visit WhatIfWeCould.com to learn more! Remember, the answer to the question “What If We Could?” is “Together We Can! (same image, hearts and headline as in last year’s guide - unless we can reverse the headshot and info to the right and have the hearts on the left?)

Why Volunteer? Volunteer is a freedom word! It means that we freely offer to help, by our own choice. Thousands of people in our community live this word, freely choosing to shovel neighbors’ pathways, restore habitat for wildlife, tend to those who are ill, tutor children, help people find housing and hope, advocate for justice, serve on City committees, and much more. When a group of us founded Volunteer Connect, now Volunteer Central Oregon, we wanted to help community members easily find and connect with volunteer opportunities. Why? I believe that volunteering is essential for meeting needs and solving problems in our community and world. For example, nonprofits in this guide rely on volunteers to accomplish needed work in our community. I also believe that volunteering helps the volunteers! When we volunteer, we: •M eet new and caring friends, and build stronger bonds with our friends, colleagues, and family members volunteering with us • Learn new skills, build our résumé, make career connections •G ain understanding of community issues and empathy for people whom we used to fear •F ind our sense of purpose, and build our sense of hope, as we work together with people solving community issues As a volunteer, I feel the satisfaction and camaraderie of working together with positive and joyful people creating good in our community. We volunteers receive even more than we give. — Betsy Warriner Co-founder of Volunteer Central Oregon and Community Conversations The Source Weekly 2017 Woman of the Year Bend Chamber 2015 Woman of the Year Award, Community Hero

EMBERS WILDFLOWER ANIMAL SANCTUARY AND BUNNY RESCUE At Ember’s our main focus is taking in unwanted bunnies (including special needs), spay/neuter, provide proper bunny care education, then adopt into loving, indoor homes. Being the only bunny rescue in Central Oregon since January 2019, we’ve taken in 248 bunnies, spay/neutered 173 neutered and adopted out 148 as of 12/15/2021 and rely solely on volunteers and donations. We recently fundraised for and built a new bunny barn which allows us to take in 3x the amount of bunnies surrendered and we’re already full. We’ve made such a huge difference in the lives of bunnies so far and would benefit from any help provided.

PET EVACUATION TEAM

ANIMAL WELFARE

The Pet Evacuation Team (PET) exists to serve people and animals in crisis. Emergency animal evacuations and sheltering during disasters are critical to our community and save lives. We work in partnership with the Red Cross, law enforcement and local emergency services during Central Oregon evacuations, providing care and a safe haven for lost and evacuated animals. We have assisted in disasters for over 20 years, including 16 local wildfire evacuations, and a flood in Prineville. PET also provides crucial support to individuals with animal/pet-related emergencies, and to law enforcement in animal seizure cases. Our all-volunteer, non-profit organization serves all of Deschutes County, and parts of Jefferson and Crook Counties. Each fire season is worse than the last one, with fires often occurring in different locations simultaneously and lasting longer. To serve these communities in crisis and allow us to activate more quickly, PET is always looking for enthusiastic new volunteers as well as monetary donations.

ANIMAL WELFARE

STREET DOG HERO Street Dog Hero serves dogs in need around the world and their communities through rescue, adoption, wellness, spay/neuter, and education. SDH works in collaboration with partners across the globe to rescue street dogs and bring them to Oregon, where they are fostered in loving homes until adopted into “Furever Families.” SDH’s spay, neuter, and wellness efforts serve local and international owned and street dogs and cats in underserved communities from Central Oregon to Mexico. Concentrating efforts where animals are least likely to receive care, and focusing on the root causes of pet overpopulation, SDH is making lasting positive change in the lives of dogs and their humans.

CASA OF CENTRAL OREGON

BASIC NEEDS

CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate. They are community volunteers who do what no one else does - they advocate solely for the best interest of children and youth in foster care. CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to watch over and advocate for abused and neglected children and make sure they don’t get lost in the overburdened child welfare system. Volunteers stay with each case until it is closed and the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. For many abused children, their CASA volunteer will be the one constant adult presence in their lives. Last year, more than 365 children in foster care in Central Oregon had the benefit of a CASA volunteer. Unfortunately, there has been an increase in the number of children in foster care since the beginning of the pandemic. There are currently children waiting for a CASA to advocate for them. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a CASA volunteer or supporting the work of a CASA, please visit www.casaofcentraloregon.org.

SHEPHERD’S HOUSE MINISTRIES

BASIC NEEDS

Shepherd’s House was established in 2005 to help a growing need in Central Oregon; to feed, clothe, and shelter those experiencing homelessness. The primary focus was to provide a safe haven away from the dangers of the streets for men to find a place of refuge and love. In 2011 Shepherd’s House began to grow by adding a long-term addiction recovery program first, for men and then to include women and children. Since then Shepherd’s House has served thousands of hurting people, helping them to find a better path. Today, Shepherd’s House has grown to serve over 200 unique individuals on a daily basis by providing emergency shelter service in Bend and Redmond, mobile outreach services to those living on the fringes through Project S.H.A.R.E., long-term addiction recovery program impacting 75 men, women, and children including extended family, and stable housing for over 30 program graduates. Because the need continues to grow, Shepherd's House has determined to grow along with these needs. Our hope is to double capacity in the next 3 years to include a new year-round shelter in Redmond, expanded capacity in Bend, including a new Navigation Center, doubling the capacity for men, women, and children in our established addiction recovery programs, as well as providing 4 sober living homes so program graduates can maintain long-term health and stability. As an organization that recognizes the incredible worth and value of each individual who walks through our doors, we desire to partner with the Central Oregon Community by providing ways for you to be a part of the solution for the ever-growing homeless epidemic. As an individual, family, business, church, or organization, our door is wide open for all to help. Will you join us in working to make life better for those facing some of life’s most difficult challenges by helping them to find a more healthy and sustainable path? VOICES AGAINST TRAFFICKING Human trafficking happens in every community regardless of race, gender, culture or socioeconomic status. In the US, a child eighteen years or younger goes missing every forty seconds. Forty life changing seconds. Voices Against Trafficking(VAT) brings together regional, national and international partners dedicated to ending the evil of human trafficking. We are individuals, corporations, survivors, nonprofits, legislators, media, and human rights agencies. We speak for those who cannot speak for themselves - men, women and especially children, who are coerced into 21st Century Slavery.

BASIC NEEDS

Voices Against Trafficking live streams free online international forums every quarter on Facebook and YouTube. These forums feature top voices from the US, Mexico, and other countries who share ideas, programs, and more to fight the evil of human trafficking. Survivors and frontline warriors share stories and tips for prevention, awareness, and rehabilitating victims. Members of Congress add their perspectives. Voices Against Trafficking is a public 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that pursues the protection of every human’s rights regardless of politics, religion, or other affiliations. We actively engage in reporting and rescue situations. VAT’s newly released book, Voices Against Trafficking - The Strength of Many Voices Speaking As One, is a great resource to start conversations among neighbors, families, churches, and communities. Designed to create greater awareness and inspire action, chapters provide essential truths and advice that affirm we can defeat the rising tide of human predators. KOR COMMUNITY LAND TRUST Homeownership represents the American dream and how many build wealth. Yet, generations of Central Oregonians have been locked out of homeownership. Kôr is working to change that. Kôr Community Land Trust provides environmentally sustainable and permanently affordable homeownership opportunities for those who contribute to the fabric of the Central Oregon economy and community. These are working individuals and families who can qualify for a mortgage but cannot afford to purchase a home on the rising market when their own wages remain stagnant. Kôr bridges this gap by creating homeownership communities that will be affordable for generations. Kôr's affordable homes will always be community assets, which is why Kôr builds its homes to goal net zero energy standards!

EVERY CHILD CENTRAL OREGON

In the Spring of 2020, in response to families facing critical hardships due to COVID-19, we launched our My NeighbOR program. Through this initiative, we connect tangible needs of the population we serve, to community members willing to sign up to be a neighbor and donate or purchase the needed item. Weekly, ECCO receives requests for items emergently needed such as clothing, car seats, diapers, beds and more. Today we are asking you to join hands with us and sign up to become a Neighbor; with your help ECCO can ensure children in care receive items they need to support their safety and well-being. If you would like to step forward and say “YES!” to being a neighbor, please visit everychildcentraloregon.org/myneighbor/for more information or reach out to Brieanna Rogers at B.Rogers@everychildcentraloregon.org. FAMILY & CHILDREN

HEALTHY BEGINNINGS Nearly 40% of children enter kindergarten with a barrier to their success. There are so many variables that impact a child's ability to learn, and most young children can’t tell parents that they are struggling. Healthy Beginnings' screenings help to identify learning barriers in children, from birth to five years old. Perhaps it's a problem related to hearing, vision, or speech. Maybe it's a motor development or social behavior issue. Our screenings are designed to assess and identify potential problems in ten different areas. The screenings are conducted by our team of professionally trained volunteers, made up of retired medical professionals, speech pathologists, educators, and licensed clinical social workers, to name a few. Volunteers perform the assessments and are then available to talk with parents and answer questions. Referrals for professional services are made as indicated. Healthy Beginnings staff members follow up with parents to discuss the results of the screenings and we work personally with families to connect them to resources available within their local communities. For more than 25 years, Healthy Beginnings staff and volunteers have provided 100% FREE health and developmental screenings to children through public community screenings or in private preschools. We are committed to giving Central Oregon's littlest learners a 'healthy beginning' so they can succeed and thrive.

FIRST STORY

This year, First Story is celebrating their 100th homeowner! To mark this major milestone, First Story is launching a year-long celebration of the dedicated partners, hard-working families and the people behind the scenes who make the magic happen. Throughout the year, First Story will share 100 Stories from across the Pacific Northwest, showing the impact that they have and the lives that are changed when communities come together. Since 1998, First Story has partnered with builder Hayden Homes to put home ownership within reach of hard-working families who have done everything right but still can’t get ahead. First Story is expanding exponentially every year, reinvesting their success into their communities, and continuing to lay the bricks of a foundation from which families, neighborhoods and communities can build a new life and thrive. Visit firststory.org/100-stories to follow along!

DESCHUTES CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION Deschutes Children’s Foundation envisions a community where all children and families have the resources they need to thrive. At our four locations, we bring the crucial work of our nonprofit partners together. Resources are shared, costs are lowered, and more vulnerable children and families find help. By working at Deschutes Children’s Foundation, local nonprofits save over $1,250,000 annually in funds that are directly invested into childcare, preschool, mentoring for youth, child abuse prevention, and resources for underserved children and families. Through this partnership, programs are more efficient and sustainable. Moreover, children and families access more opportunities for help.

PREGNANCY RESOURCE CENTERS OF CENTRAL OREGON

FAMILY & CHILDREN

An unplanned pregnancy can feel like a moment of crisis in a woman’s life. For over 25 years the Pregnancy Resource Center has provided free pregnancy related services to individuals and families across Central Oregon. We focus on building one-on-one personal relationships with our clients and providing them with honest answers and hope. One of our clients said it best “You were there when I had nowhere else to go. You gave me free clothing and diapers and event allowed me to see my baby on the ultrasound for the first time.” We invite you to partner with us as you are able. Volunteer in a center, fill a baby bottle or recycle your cans and bottles in our fundraising bags. More info online at www.centraloregonforlife.org.

MOUNTAINSTAR FAMILY RELIEF NURSERY

MountainStar’s mission is to prevent child abuse and neglect through community support and therapeutic services that help vulnerable children and families succeed. We are the only program in Deschutes, Jefferson, and Crook Counties providing therapeutic classrooms, parenting education services, and family support targeted at protecting babies and toddlers who are at significant risk for abuse and neglect.

FAMILY & CHILDREN

The children we serve live in households with an average of 16 risk factors, including unstable housing, mental health issues, substance abuse, a history of family violence, and exposure to toxic stress. 100% of families meet the state definition of at-risk 97% of families live in poverty 82% of families are experiencing high stress 61% of families are unable to provide adequate nutrition for every family member MountainStar’s therapeutic services provide crisis intervention at a critical time for families with young children. Children benefit from high-quality early care and education services that are enriched by trauma-informed practices utilized in our therapeutic classes. Classroom-based services allow children to form and sustain relationships with their friends, peers, and adults, all of which are key to their development. We provide parents with crisis intervention, parenting education, support through home visits and group activities, mental health services, transportation, respite care, and referrals to other organizations and agencies that can provide additional assistance. In 2021, MountainStar successfully kept 99% of the children in our program safe from abuse and neglect. MountainStar’s work to prevent child abuse and neglect is critical in protecting our communities most vulnerable children. In 2020, there were almost 1,000 confirmed cases of abuse in Central Oregon – nearly half of these children were under the age of five. Join us – donate, advocate, volunteer – and together we will keep kids safe.

WE ARE SAGE FAMILY & CHILDREN

Welcome to SAGE Central Oregon. SAGE is a nonprofit that believes in generational equity – the principle that each generation should improve the quality of life for the next. Our mission is to inspire people over 50 to give forward with their time, money, and voice so that younger and future generations can thrive. Each year, we bring to life this Greek Proverb at the heart of our work: “A society grows great when its elders plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” What’s the focus? SAGE is familiar with give forward opportunities at all levels. We are most familiar with organizations that work to strengthen education, restore the environment and promote economic security. If you’re not sure where to get involved contact us to meet with a Community Resource Connector. During our one-to-one meeting, you tell us what you care about and how you want to make a difference. There is no cost to meet with a Community Resource Connector, and no pressure to engage. Our goal is to meet you where you are, and to help you find a great fit. Learn more at WeAreSage.org/central. HEALTH & WELLBEING

DESTINATION REHAB Destination Rehab is a 501(c)3 non-profit that was founded to provide training and support for adults with disabilities to engage in the great outdoors while building skills and confidence for increased personal independence. MOSAIC MEDICAL Mosaic was founded for the community by the community. We exist because our community believes that everyone who lives here should have access to high-quality healthcare. And that’s just what we do: We provide high-quality, integrated, culturally appropriate healthcare to Central Oregonians, regardless of life circumstances. Job losses, limited affordable housing, and lack of affordable healthcare have devastated some Central Oregonians. A donation to Mosaic Medical will ensure that families won’t have to question the cost of their medical, dental, mental health, nutritional and medication services when needs arise. You can help us provide high quality and affordable care for all.
