STRENGTHENING STUDENT LEADERSHIP

SIZANANI LEGACY PROJECT

Launched in 2025, the Sizanani Legacy Project is a student-led initiative endorsed by the Dean of Student Affairs, the Wits Citizenship and Community Outreach, and Campus Housing and Residence Life. Aimed at tackling student food insecurity, the project addresses the gap left by NSFAS shortfalls, particularly over weekend meal allowance It raises awareness of campus hunger while offering sustainable, student-driven solutions to ensure no Wits student is left behind due to hunger.

In a collaborative effort, the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE), and the Division of Student Affairs hosted an off-campus Student Leadership Bootcamp for FEBE Schools’ Student Councils. Co-organised with student development units, the programme focused on values-based leadership, governance, mental wellness, and strategic planning Highlights included an obstacle course that encouraged teamwork and resilience Through workshops and reflection, student leaders gained practical tools and a renewed sense of purpose. The initiative underscored the importance of leadership development within academic spaces, fostering accountable and impactful student leadership.

EXPLORING STUDENT TRANSITIONS

The Thought Leadership Seminar on Student Transitions, hosted by the CSD’s Student Transitions and Persistence Unit, brought together 65 higher education professionals from across South Africa. The seminar fostered insightful dialogue, redefining transitions as a continuous, multifaceted process Attendees described the event as informative, transformative, and crucial for institutional collaboration. CAMPUS HOUSING AND RESIDENCE LIFE

WITS IN COLLABORATION WITH NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF LESOTHO

The Wits All Residence Sub-Council (ARSC) conducted its mid-term review alongside a benchmarking visit to the National University of Lesotho (NUL). As part of this experiential trip, a meaningful community initiative took place at Khoobeng Primary School, where Wits Campus Housing and Residence Life, in collaboration with ARSC and NUL, planted trees and launched a food garden. This impactful project extended beyond student affairs, leaving a lasting mark and reinforcing a shared commitment to sustainability, food security, and social responsibility

WITS RESIDENCES FOR SUSTAINABILITY

The 12th ACUHO-I Green Campus Conference, held in Gqeberha in 2025, brought together university housing professionals, students, and sustainability advocates to explore eco-friendly practices in higher education Centred on the theme “Ubuntu and the Environment: African Indigenous Knowledge in Sustainability,” the event featured workshops, exhibitions, and panel discussions. A key highlight was the University of the Witwatersrand receiving the Best Presentation award, recognising its student-led sustainability initiatives and commitment to green transformation within campus residences and the broader university community

ECHOES OF EQUALITY

In collaboration with Sonke Gender Justice, Jubilee and Knockando residences hosted a play addressing social injustices and inequalities. As part of ongoing Community Education & Mobilisation efforts, the Residence Gender Equity Officer and team committed to attending Sonke-facilitated workshops. A successful student art auction was also held to raise funds and support gender justice initiatives

The Graduate Recruitment Programme kicked-off with great momentum as over 200 students attended the Internship Webinar on 25 March. This online session featured 14 organisations offering valuable insights into internships, career development, and real-world work experiences Students engaged enthusiastically, exploring opportunities and asking thoughtful questions.

Building on this energy, the annual Graduate Recruiters’ Breakfast took place on 11 April at Sturrock Park. The event brought together more than 280 attendees, including students, staff, senior leadership, and representatives from over 90 companies. Highlights included remarks from the Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Students, as well as contributions from the Disability Rights Unit and the Youth Employment Service (YES) The atmosphere was one of excitement, connection, and possibility.

SCIENCE, IT & ENGINEERING CAREER FAIR

Drawing close to 30 organisations to the Wits Science Stadium on West Campus the fair took place on 17 April. Students attended in impressive numbers networking, engaging with recruiters, applying for opportunities, and exploring future career paths.

ACCOUNTING CAREER FAIR

In May, the Margo Steele School of Accountancy hosted the Accounting Career Fair over two vibrant days (6–7 May) With 22 firms and banks in attendance, the event attracted more than 1,000 students, making it a dynamic space for industry connection and career exploration

2025 Varsity Rugby Young Guns Champions!

The Wits Young Guns claimed victory in the 2025 Varsity Rugby Young Guns Competition, proudly bringing home the trophy Showcasing exceptional passion, dedication, and resilience, the team fought hard throughout the tournament to secure the title Captain Vuyo Gwiji reflected on their journey, praising the team's unity and determination. Vice-captain Sabelo Shangase represented the squad on national television, sharing their story with a wider audience. Their inspiring segment aired on SABC Sport, celebrating a historic win that underscores the strength of Wits Rugby’s emerging talent and the spirit of young athletes striving for excellence.

Wits Football men and women’s teams place 3rd in the 2025 Pirates Cup

During the 2025 Pirates Cup held over the Easter holidays, Wits’ men’s and women’s football teams delivered impressive performances, each securing third place. Their consistent skill, determination, and teamwork were evident throughout the tournament. Captains Morena Ramashala and Lizza ‘Dunga’ Mokoena led with pride, guiding their teams to podium finishes Reflecting on the journey, both captains commended their squads for their dedication and resilience The achievement marks a proud moment for Wits Football and highlights the strength and potential of the university’s sporting talent across both men’s and women’s codes.

Wits hockey stars Morgan de Jager and Shanna Mendonca have been selected to represent South Africa in an upcoming tournament in Malaysia. Their selection reflects their dedication and gratitude as they prepare to compete on the international stage.

Uzair Solomons, of the Wits Fencing Club, represented South Africa at the Junior U20 Fencing Championships in Angola Swimmers Suné Liebenberg and Romy Day competed at the SA National Championships in Port Elizabeth.

WITS’ “COOL KIDS” FEATURE

SIYAPHUMELELA SCHOLAR PROGRAMME - “I AM”

Mbali Zondo, one of five 2025 Siyaphumelela Scholars, embodies resilience through verse. Mentored by legendary poet Diana Ferrus, she prepared to recite her powerful poem “Who am I, What am I, and Why am I as I am” at the Siyaphumelela Conference in Johannesburg. Her words bloomed from hardship—rooted in poverty, loss, and courage yet blossom into triumph She spoke of inherited pain, generational hope, and finding strength in shared struggle Through poetry, Mbali declared: I am more than enough. Her journey echoes the heartbeat of many, a living reminder that through storms, flowers still rise and Siyaphumelela, we shall succeed

STUDENT ACTION COMMUNITY CHANGE ON THE GLOBAL STAGE

Wits students Ntlahla Sikwana and Tessa Tshuma were selected to attend the 2025 Get Engaged Student Action and Youth Leadership Conference in Vilnius, Lithuania Organised by Bard College and the European Humanities University, the conference brought together 40 student leaders from around the world. Ntlahla showcased her grassroots literacy initiative, Hand in Hand for Hope, based in Gqeberha, while Tessa presented her work with Jan Hofmeyer Community Services in Vrededorp. The conference offered workshops on leadership, innovation, and project management. VOICE OF A CHAMPION: WITS STUDENT SHINES AT SAUDC

Wits students Cheyenne Paxton and Nakita Singh made headlines at the 2025 Southern African Universities Debating Championship (SAUDC). They both emerged as Champions of Southern Africa with Cheyenne Paxton as overall best speaker and Nakita Singh as 4th best speaker of the tournament. Representing the WITS Debating Union, Paxton and Singh competed at the region’s most prestigious university debating tournament, which brings together top debaters across Southern Africa. Their outstanding performance reflects not only their individual excellence, but the strength of the Wits debating programme. Congratulations to Cheyenne and Nakita on this remarkable achievement!

INNOVATION IN ACTION: ENACTUS WITS TEAM SOARS TO NATIONAL SUCCESS

The Enactus Wits team made us incredibly proud at the 2025 Enactus South Africa National Competition! Showcasing two impactful projects HRA Transportation and Drip Tailors they addressed realworld challenges through innovation and entrepreneurship. Enactus empowers students to create social impact through entrepreneurial action

These achievements go beyond awards they reflect the power of student-led impact, resilience, and vision
