Maceswereoriginallyweaponsofdefence,designedtobreakthrougharmour.In medievaltimes,bishopscarriedamaceinsteadofaswordintobattletoenable themtodefendthemselvesinaccordancewiththecanonicalrulethatforbadea priesttoshedblood.Intime,themacehascometoberegardedasasymbolof delegatedauthorityvestedinapersonoraninstitution.AtthisUniversity,itisasymbol oftheauthorityvestedintheChancellorandareminderofthemandategivenbythe legislatureofthiscountrytotheUniversitytograntdegrees.
TheUniversitymaceistheworkoftheEdinburghdesigner,silversmithandengraver, WilliamKirk,whodesignedandmadethemaceoftheUniversityofStirlingandofother institutions.Itissilver-andgold-plated,is1070millimetreslongand180millimetresbroad characterofthisUniversityasaninstitutionoflearning,setinaminingcentrewithinthe RepublicofSouthAfrica.
Theheadofthemacewithitsspreadingverticalbladesissymbolicofthehornsofa springbok.Thecentralverticalspikeisrepresentativeofarockdrillonthemine,and theamberstonesetintheheadisintendedasatributetoapastChancellorthrough itsassociationwithhisname,Bernstein,whichinGermanmeansamberstone.The heavyqualityoftheheadisconsistentwiththetraditionalconceptofthemaceasa weaponofdefence.Thecollarrepeatstheshapeofthehead.Itconsistsofeightcogs whichsymbolisethecog-wheelintheUniversitycoatofarmsandrepresentsmining andindustry.Theshaftisoctagonalanddividedintothreesections.Thecoatofarms oftheUniversityisplacedontheshaftunderthecollar.BelowthisthewordsUniversitas WitwatersrandensisJohannesburgi:areinscribed,followedbythedateinRoman

ReuelJethroKhozawasbornin1949atArthurseatinBushbuckridge.Hisfatherwasanevangelistwho setahighstandardofacademicachievement.Duringschoolholidays,helookedafterhisgrandfather's cattle,whichinstilledaloveoffarming.HecompletedhisundergraduateandHonoursdegreesin PsychologyattheUniversityofLimpopo(previouslyUniversityoftheNorth).Aftergraduatingin1974,he becameajuniorlecturerattheuniversity,buthisinvolvementwithstudentpoliticsledtohisdismissal. Decadeslater,in2007,hewasaskedtobeChancellorofthesameuniversity.
DrKhoza'sdismissalfromacademialedhimtostarthisbusinesscareer.Afterspendingfouryearsasa marketingassistantandproductmanageratUnilever,heobtainedascholarshipfromShellSouthAfrica topursueaMaster'sdegreeinMarketingattheUniversityofLancasterintheUnitedKingdom.In2006, hecompletedanEngineeringDoctorate,withafocusonbusinessleadership,attheUniversityof Warwick,UnitedKingdom.
In1981,heestablishedhisownmarketingandmanagementconsultingfirm.Heneededanofficein downtownJohannesburg,butthiswasatatimewhenblackpeoplewereprohibitedfromapplyingfor officesin'whiteSouthAfrica.'Hehadtoforegoa51%stakeinhisfirmsothatitcouldcomeacrossasa whitecompany.Atthesametime,hejoinedandlaterbecameoneofthefoundingmembersanddirectors oftheBlackManagementForum(BMF),whichwasestablishedin1976toempoweranddevelopblack managersinSouthAfrica.Historically,theBMFhasplayedacrucialroleinpromotingblackeconomic empowermentandemploymentequityinSouthAfrica.AsaprominentfigureinSouthAfricanbusiness, DrKhoza'scontributionshaveextendedbeyondtheBMFtovarioussectors,includingcorporate governance,education,andmusic.
In1983,ReuelKhozawasinvitedtojointheStandardBank'sAdvisoryBoard.Later,heledaturnaround atEskomasBoardChairmanfrom1997to2005.Heattributedthesuccessfulturnaroundtostrong collaborationbetweenboardmembersandtheexecutiveteam,andsignificantinvestmentinacquiring anddevelopingtherightskills.Underhisleadership,Eskomgreatlyimproveditsproductivity,financial performance,andcreditworthiness.In2001,EskomwontheFinancialTimesawardforthebestglobal powerutility.By2004,Eskomwasoperatinginmorethan30Africancountries.
DrKhozahasbeenanoutspokencriticofpoliticalmismanagementinSouthAfrica,and,asNedbank Chairmanin2011,heearnedthewrathofthegoverningpartyforstatingthatSouthAfrica's socio-economiccrisiswastheproductofafailuretoimplementprovengoodgovernanceandleadership strategies.Hearguedthatthe"integrity,health,socio-economicsoundnessandprosperityofSouthAfrica werethecollectiveresponsibilityofallcitizens,corporationsandindividuals.HepointedoutthatSouth Africanshadadutytobuildanddevelopthenationandto"calltobooktheputativeleaderswho,dueto sheerincapacitytodealwiththecomplexityof21st-centurygovernanceandleadership,cannotlead."He contendedthatnationalsuccessrequirescooperationbetweenthestateandthecorporatesector,which "shouldoperateinanearperfecttango".Withoutthis,hemaintained,"wewillbewitnessingafurther unravellingdegenerationintoakleptocracyunlessSouthAfricansofgoodwill,ofwhichtherearemany, definitivelyintervene."
In2019,DrKhoza,togetherwithhiswifeMumsy,startedtheReuelandMumsyKhozaFoundationtouplift communities.TheysupporttheEkurhuleniOrphanandVulnerableChildren'sCentreinAcornhoek,with foodandbooks.WhenhechairedtheBethelHook'sTrust,hewasabletoraiseenoughcapitaltobuilda schoolthatisacombinedeffortofthepublicandprivatesectors.Hewasalsoabletosecuredonationsof deskcomputersdistributedtoschoolsinMpumalanga.Moreover,hehasencouragedschoolstohave vegetablegardens,becomingasourceoffoodforstudentsandrevenuefortheschool.
DrKhozahasearnednumerousaccomplishments.In2021,hebecamethefirstAfricantobeinducted intotheThinkers50ManagementHallofFame,describedbytheFinancialTimesas"theOscarsof managementthinking."InJune2022,hereceivedaLifetimeAchievementAwardfromtheAll-Africa BusinessLeaderAwardsintandemwithCNBCAfrica.
Hisphilanthropyextendstosecuringdonationsfordeskcomputersandhelpingestablishvegetable gardens,amongstothers.
In2024,hewasawardedtheChancellor'sMedalfromtheUniversityofPretoriaforhisoutstanding achievementsandcontributionstothebusinessandacademiafields,andforhisauthorshipasa businessmanandleader.Inthesameyear,hereceivedtheSundayTimesLifetimeAchievementAward. HeholdshonorarydoctoratesfromtheUniversityofWarwick(2020),RhodesUniversity(2019),andthe UniversityofFreeState(2021).Inaddition,heisalsoaqualifiedCharteredDirector.
HehasservedasChairmanofmanyleadingblue-chipcompanies,includingtheAssupolGroupand NedbankGroupLimited.HealsoservedasDirectorofmanyorganisations,suchastheJSELimited,IBM SouthAfrica,LibertyLifeGroup,andPresidentoftheInstituteofDirectorsinSouthAfrica.
HeservesasEmeritusProfessorExtraordinaireoftheUniversityofStellenboschBusinessSchoolandis currentlyaVisitingProfessoratRhodesBusinessSchool,theUniversityoftheFreeStateBusiness School,andtheWitsBusinessSchool.HepreviouslyservedasChancelloroftheUniversityofLimpopo (2007-2017)andMedunsa(2007-2014)andiscurrentlyChancelloroftheUniversityofKwa-ZuluNatal.
HeplayedacrucialroleinshapingSouthAfrica'scorporategovernancearchitecture,particularlythrough hisworkontheKingCodes,settingbenchmarksforethicalbusinesspracticesglobally.Hewasinvolved intheformulationoftheKingCodesonCorporateGovernanceinKingII,KingIII,andKingIV,servingas DeputyChairoftheKingCommitteeinthelasttwoinstances.

TheUsherswillassisttheelderlyanddisabledguestsoutofthebuilding; Theacademicprocessiononstagemustexitthroughthebackstagedoor; OnceoutsidetheGreatHallallguests,graduandsandstaffmustproceedtothemainassemblypointonthe piazza.
