Witney Calling!
We witnessed a weekend of brave determination from both our Two’s and Threes as they participated in Oxfordshire Cup action against senior league sides. Both teams acquitted themselves well and we could have won both games, especially our 2s who came so close to turning over Oxford Harlequins II in their own back yard. Quins retained their 100% record this season but by the skin of their teeth and haven’t been pushed so close all season at their Horspath home. Well done 2s we are really proud of you.
Our Threes battled hard at home against Abingdon, again a division above, but that didn’t phase our terrific 3s. We dominated scrum and lineout and had some devastating route one carries, Wayne Caffekey making a nuisance of himself whenever he carried. One thing we would need to address is defensive structure, there wasn’t any, and whilst brave and relentless, Abingdon found gaps appearing all across the park and took full advantage of it.
Excellent entertainment, from a spectator point of view we weren’t disappointed, from a member of Witney RFC point of view, devastated
Witney Calling!
Our Angels and Academy games were lost to Storm Bert, not the best storm name but he certainly brought some water with him.
The Academy have rescheduled for Sunday, kick off 1pm. The Angels are on the road to Oadby Wyggestonians, Sounds like a Roald Dahl novel location but apparently, it’s in southeast Leicester.
Remember these dates for your diary:
Wednesday 11th December, KO TBC. Our Gallant Old and Bold travel to Gosford All Blacks for their last game of 2024. Why not add that to your diary and pop along to cheer our aging warriors to victory.
Saturday 21st December, 7pm KO. Christmas Jumper Night featuring live music from Cloud 9 acoustic trio. Get a taster at:

Thornbury XV vs Witney XV 14:15 KO
No game for our First Team as they enjoyed a well-earned break last weekend. This week they are on the road to Thornbury Gloucestershire who currently sit 6 points above us in the league. Last time out they were thoroughly beaten at home by Trowbridge so I am sure they will be up for giving their home fans something to shout about.
Let’s hope the travelling Witney faithful can get behind the boys in Black and Blue.

Oxford Harlequins II 22 : 19 Witney II
Heartbroken! Not my words but the post-match comment of coach Simon and James as they witnessed the Twos battle hard and fall just short. Witney led for much of the game and seemed to be on the verge of what would have been a major cup upset.
Tries from Ollie Toner, Rees Wilson & Joe Rowles, with 2 conversions from Ollie Dawkins are where our points came from. An outstanding performance from Charlie Gardner earned him, a very well-deserved Man of the Match. I would also like to pass on coach Simon Copperwheat’s praise of referee Chrissy Clark, again his words, “She was excellent!” Well done all who ‘took it to them’, we’re immensely proud of you all. This weekend our battling IIs welcome Chipping Norton to Hailey Road. Why not get up the Club and support our boys in Black and Blue. Saturday 30th November
No game for our Threes as they regroup and consider what might have been had they managed to set a defensive line a bit less leaky. Great effort and some extremely exciting breaks with Wayne Caffekey, Zac Way and Richard Woodward deciding that they didn’t need gaps to run through, route one taking bodies with them, awesome. Woody didn’t last long and the recurring back problem saw him leave the field, replaced by youngster Sam Footner. Sam had a great game and was a continuous pain in the side for Abingdon, especially at the line out, their hooker didn’t know where to throw, and was frequently finding a Black and Blue hand.
Tries came from Wayne Caffekey who, rolling back the years grabbed a brace, Harry Richards and Zac Way got one apiece. Charlie Dunbar managed two from the tee and had he stayed on, would have made all the difference in the latter stages of the 2nd half. Wayne quite rightly named Man of the Match. Well done all of you, enjoy the rest and come back stronger next week, away against Grove II, if it happens!

Witney Academy. Back To Winning Ways!
With last week’s game a victim to Bert, this weekend we see the fixture re-arranged on what is hopefully a relatively dry Hailey Road. The Rams are mid table with one from three but our boys won’t be complacent. The action kicks off at 1 pm. Be sure to get behind the future stars of Witney RFC as they look to regain their position at the top of their league. Come on Witney Colts, your Club needs you. Sun 01st December 2024 Witney Academy XV vs Reading Rams 1pm

The Witney Wizards is a group of older players, some with no previous rugby playing experience, all with one aim, to enjoy some fitness in a happy, social environment. We train once a week on Thursday evenings. Skills sessions, tactics, and competitive games, followed by a Supper Club and a social drink in our Hailey Road Clubhouse. The Wizards welcome people of all ages and backgrounds; we do have female players but could always do with more. The Wizards have played competitive matches at home and away, always draws a big crowd and above all else, is always fun. Think this is for you, why not come along and give it a Try!
