At the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) options include non-credit, part-time college courses, part-time degree programs, and evening/weekend degree programs.

f course there’s nothing like the city for getting a first class education in street smarts; more formal educational experiences abound, including degree-granting programs as well as non-credit courses. Only a few generations ago, continuing education meant “night school,” where grown-ups learned to speak English and enough civics to pass the test for U.S. citizenship. Today’s world is a very different place. The exponential growth of knowledge and quickly changing technology make life-long learning more imperative than ever. In addition to beefing up their knowledge of the electronic environment, though, students of all ages can head to the metropolitan area to “brush up on their Shakespeare,” learn to tango, acquire culinary skills, and more. THE ART STUDENTS LEAGUE OF NEW YORK, 215 West 57th Street (between Seventh Ave. and Broadway), invites prospective students, who don’t necessarily have to have previous experience, to start classes “at any time.” Classes are based on the atelier system, where a working artist trains students in a studio setting. Students can select from classes and workshops in drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. The Art Students League of New York also offers art classes for children. The AUDITING PROGRAM AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY (535 West 116th Street) provides adults who are not currently enrolled in college with the opportunity to attend selected lectures drawn from the University's offerings in the Arts and Sciences during the academic year. Older adults may take advantage of Columbia’s Lifelong Learners Program, which enables individuals over 65 years of age who are interested in auditing courses to enroll at a discount. In either case (i.e., young or old) auditors are encouraged to attend class and to keep up with the reading. The good news is that no examinations or papers are required and no grade is assigned. Less-good news, for many, may be the fact that auditors are considered silent participants in class and may join in discussions only at the discretion of the instructor. Reports on the “death” of printed books are widely exaggerated, and THE CENTER FOR BOOK ARTS (28 West 27th Street) is here to prove it. This non-profit organization offers over 100 classes and workshops in bookbinding, letterpress printing, paper marbling, typography, and related fields. The Center boasts

the distinction of being the first organization of its kind in the United States dedicated to contemporary interpretations of the book as an art object while preserving traditional practices of the art of the book. Youth programs (including internships and volunteer opportunities) at EL MUSEO DEL BARRIO (1230 Fifth Avenue) provide teens (ages 13-19) access to arts education, opportunities for professional growth, and platforms to have their voices heard. A searchable database features selected works of art from El Museo's collection, highlighting the breadth and diversity of Caribbean, Latino and Latin American art. “We know that you're busy, but FIT'S SCHOOL OF CONTINUING AND PROFESSIONAL STUDIES (227 West 27th Street) will fit your demanding schedule,” declares the Fashion Institute of Technology, where options include non-credit courses, part-time college courses, part-time degree programs, and evening/weekend degree programs, as well as a precollege program for middle- and high school-age children. The emphasis here is on fashion business, design, computer technology, and marketing. Toddlers, kids, teens, and adults can learn or improve their French language skills at the FRENCH INSTITUTE/ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE OF NEW YORK (“the only language school in New York dedicated to teaching French,” 22 East 60th Street) by enrolling in intensive two-week classes, or the five- and ten-week sessions offered each season. FIAF has a library, theater, and art gallery. “The most important front in the fight to reform the food system today is in your kitchen,” suggests food writer Michael Pollan. The INSTITUTE OF CULINARY EDUCATION (ICE) (50 West 23rd Street) runs America’s largest program of “hands-on” cooking, baking and wine education classes. ICE offers courses in food media, advanced pastry, culinary walking tours and “how to enter” the culinary business, as well as in traditional cooking. Year-round classes run one to five sessions and generally begin at 10 a.m. or 6 p.m. Most classes conclude with a large, family-style meal, served with wine or beer. “We have never known anyone to walk away hungry,” they say. The JAPAN SOCIETY’s (333 East 47th Street) Education Program includes continued learning opportunities both online

and in person for families, students, and teachers. Educators on the Society’s Study Tour travel to Japan for three weeks to experience the nation firsthand and bring their experiences back to the classroom. The program is open to middle- and high-school classroom teachers, librarians and school administrators (principals, assistant principals, and department chairs only), and includes an intensive pre-departure orientation and a study tour to Japan. The Going Global Social Networking Project consists of a series of flexible projects designed to engage grades 3 through 12 students in “authentic, fun, educational international exchange” from the comfort of home. The real-time and online resources and programs at THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART (1000 Fifth Avenue) aim to introduce students of all ages to “new worlds,” while also offering instruction about “more familiar territory.” Adults can sign up for thematic, multisession courses that combine lectures and gallery explorations led by Met experts and guest specialists. Hard-to-please teens can learn about the Museum’s collections, make their own “masterpieces,” sketch on Saturdays, meet authors and illustrators, and learn from one another. THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART (MoMA) (11 West 53rd Street) provides opportunities for individuals, students, teachers, and other groups to investigate and discuss modern and contemporary art with leading art specialists in the museum’s galleries and classrooms. “Claes Oldenburg, Pop Art, and the 1960s,” a recent 5-week, hour-and-a-half daytime program, looked at the artist’s unique status within the Pop Art movement through his pioneering work in sculpture, installation, and multimedia.

NEW YORK UNIVERSITY (NYU) offers a complex array of courses for adults, and applications may be made through specific departments and programs. The focus of the NYU SCHOOL OF CONTINUING AND PROFESSIONAL STUDIES (7 East 12th Street) is on educational experiences that take advantage of the financial, civic, and cultural assets of the city. Classroom learning experiences are supplemented by field trips and networking events that incorporate the City's diverse resources. THE 92ND STREET Y (1395 Lexington Avenue and 200 Hudson Street) casts a wide net, offering classes in art and architecture, creative writing, cooking, dance, film studies, games and crafts, history, Jewish life, literature, languages, personal growth, and more. In addition to its adult continuing education program, this venerable institution offers over 4,000 classes throughout the year for children (one class range includes “newborn”) and teenagers. It is no surprise that RIVERSIDE CHURCH (490 Riverside Drive) offers several Bible classes for children and adults during the week; prospective students will be glad to know that this Morningside Heights institution offers classes in yoga; mindfulness meditation; the art of movement; and “French for older adults.” The YOU SHOULD BE DANCING studio (“the place that makes it easy every step of the way” at 412 Eighth Avenue) offers individual and group classes in ballroom, tango, hustle, belly, and swing, not to mention “wedding prep” and the current rage, zumba. RED HOOK BROOKLYN A STEP BACK IN TIME Named for its red soil, this enclave is a new outpost for urban professionals who raise backyard chickens. Good food, art and views abound.

and Brooklyn Battery Tunnel were built, Red Hook was cut off from the rest of the borough. As a result, much of its old world charm and waterfront views are intact. The waterfront revival sputtered in the mid-’90s, and in the mid-2000s artists and those seeking affordable housing discovered the neighborhood gem. The enchantment begins on the free water taxi, leaving from Manhattan’s Pier 11 and arriving 10 minutes later in Red Hook, Brooklyn. On the upper deck, with breezes making the midsummer heat tolerable, there are views of Governor’s Island. Soon the Statue of Liberty’s head appears, silhouetted against pink clouds, and everyone is clicking their cameras. Look back, and there’s the Manhattan skyline. A man is whistling an old New York melody that I can’t pinpoint, with tremolo that sends chills down the spine. Soon Red Hook comes into view. There are kayakers along the shore of old brick factory buildings with arched windows and black shutters swung open. The buildings remind me of Berenice Abbott’s New York in the 1930s photographs. There are terraces packed with diners under red and yellow umbrellas. The water taxi makes two stops—Fairway supermarket and IKEA—and we disembark at Fairway, closest to Van Brunt Street, Red Hook’s main drag. Behind two vintage buses there is an outdoor dining patio, with tables shaded by umbrellas, as well as a glass-enclosed dining area. You can purchase prepared food from the store and eat it here, enjoying some of the best views in all of New York. Opened in 2006, Red Hook is the fourth store the FAIRWAY chain built, taking advantage of the waterfront location. It remains the largest in the chain of nine and was key to the neighborhood’s revitalization. There is a neighborhood guide on its website: www.fairwaymarket.com/store-red-hook Artisanal cheeses, olives and olive oils, coffee beans roasted on the premises, and deli selections that include lobster rolls make this store a destination. Samples are offered of a tomme goat cheese from the Pyrenees. It’s so good I wind up buying a small wedge for $8, even though it’s going to be pretty stinky by the time I get it home.

earching for my first New York apartment, I discovered Red Hook. I could barely afford anything on my editorial assistant salary—an apartment in Chelsea had the bathroom in the kitchen, and even Park Slope was beyond my means—but in this Brooklyn enclave I’d found a third-floor walkup with fluted columns separating the living room and dining room, and a view of the waterfront and lower Manhattan. Of the three bedrooms, one would be my darkroom and one would be my writing studio. I put down a deposit and started packing my periwinkle blue dishes. Al "Scarface" Capone got his start as a small time criminal in Red Hook, along with the wound that led to his nickname. When my mother and aunt learned I was moving here, they marched into the realtor office and demanded my deposit back. Thirty-five years later, I’m still thinking about Red Hook—now one of Brooklyn’s hottest neighborhoods. Visitors flock to its farmers market and community gardens, get a cup of joe at Stumptown Roasters, baked goods at Baked (including the original “Brookster,” a hybrid brownie-chocolate chip cookiecupcake), listen to roots and blues at Jalopy Theatre and kayak with Red Hook Boaters. I convinced my brother, who shares a passion for all things Brooklyn, to join me on a day trip to Red Hook. I forewarned him that there’d be a lot of good eating. Surrounded by water on three sides and gridded with 19th-century Belgian-block roads, Red Hook has a rugged urban beauty. Young professionals raise chickens in their backyards here, preferring the small town feel to the hubbub of, say, Williamsburg. Settled by the Dutch in the 1600s, the area was named for its red soil and hook shape jutting into the East River. The film On the Waterfront was set in Red Hook. Arthur Miller also wrote about corruption on the docks here. Last Exit to Brooklyn by Hubert Selby Jr. dramatizes the lives of Red Hook dockworkers and residents in 1952. After the shipping industry left and the Gowanus Expressway

Next on our visit is Pier 41, Liberty Warehouse, a magnificent brick warehouse with arched windows and doorways. It’s been adaptively reused as a banquet hall, a glass studio and a winery. Pier 41 was built in 1873 as part of the waterfront that made Red Hook a major shipping and warehousing center in the mid-19th century. At RED HOOK WINERY, while sipping Riesling, Rosé, Viognier and Petit Verdot made from grapes grown on Long Island and upstate New York, we chat with Virginia—that’s actually not her name, it’s the state she’s from, but we wind up calling her Virginia because we never learn her actual name. Virginia has lived in Red Hook for a little over a year. She likes it, and was here when Superstorm Sandy brought water midway up the walls of the building and volunteers rallied to bail out the winery. www.redhookwinery.com At the end of the warehouse is STEVE’S AUTHENTIC KEY LIME PIE—by some standards, the best key lime pie in New York. They are made in small batches from fresh-squeezed Key limes from Florida and handmade crust with real butter. We sample a small tart. www.stevesauthentic.com We walk up the street to BROOKLYN CRAB—Virginia recommended it—and climb the steps to a tree house of a building where we sit at a table in the bar area. Our plan is to eat everywhere in Red Hook, so we’re just going to have a bite here. We order six Maryland blue crabs boiled in a spicy mixture. Our condiments are in a basket on the table, as is a roll of paper towels—essential for this messy operation, beginning with peeling back the key on the underside of the crab, cracking the shell and peeling off the top, then the gills, to get to the succulent white meat. It’s a lot of work for not a lot of meat, but that’s what makes it taste so good. I end up with Old Bay-seasoned crab juice all over me. brooklyncrab.com After a good scrub down, we head for the WATERFRONT MUSEUM, a barge that the curator bought for a dollar and restored in 1986. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the more than 100-year-old barge has been located here since 1994. The museum was founded to preserve the flavor of life along the river. Just outside the museum is a landscaped waterfront park connecting to Liberty Warehouse. www.waterfrontmuseum.org The ADDED VALUE RED HOOK FARMERS MARKET is open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and offers veggies, poultry, pork,

beef, fish, smoked meats, eggs, baked goods and more from farms throughout New York State. Food demos, author appearances and live music add to the family-friendly atmosphere. www.added-value.org/the-farmers-market We visit another large warehouse that has been turned into an art gallery on two floors by the BROOKLYN WATERFRONT ARTISTS COALITION. The enormous Civil War-era space is not only ideal for exhibiting art, but each arched window, with its views of the harbor and the Statue of Liberty, is a work of art. BWAC (pronounced bee-wack) was organized in 1978 by 16 artists looking for a place to exhibit, and has grown to become Brooklyn's largest artist-run organization. www.bwac.org We continue on Van Brunt Street, poking in shop windows, noting areas still in need of restoration. Superstorm Sandy wasn’t kind to Red Hook, and there are signs of recovery underway. We pass a sign that says “Chocolate Factory Tours” and follow it excitedly. Founded by Daniel Prieto Preston, an inventor and aerospace engineer whose family has been farming organic cacao and sugar cane in the Dominican Republic for more than 100 years, CACAO PRIETO produces bean-to-bar chocolate daily and distills a line of small batch, cacao-based liqueurs and rums. From the website we learn that the warehouse space smells like chocolate and is full of shiny machinery that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. But, bummer, Cacao Prieto is closed on Saturday! We shall return. Products ranging from preserves to soaps and Nutella-like spreads are available through the website, as are liqueurs and, of course, chocolate. cacaoprieto.com After checking out the Lobster Pound—lobster rolls and lobster bisque to go—we opt for the sit-down comfort of THE GOOD FORK, Red Hook’s fine dining establishment. Owned and operated by the husband of its Korean chef, The Good Fork offers contemporary fare with a Korean twist—sides of kimchi and Korean pancakes. We share a special appetizer of scallops that melt in your mouth. My brother enjoys a ricotta-based gnocchi with ramp pesto, and I make a meal out of the Prince Edward Island mussels in a coconut broth. www.goodfork.com After dinner, we cruise around, looking for the site of my old apartment. I think it was Pioneer Street, but I can’t be sure. There’s absolutely no way to verify where it was, so I might as well just make it up. Sure, it was Pioneer Street. U

hen Hillary Clinton stepped down from her Cabinet appointment in February 2013 after visiting 112 countries on numerous diplomatic missions over the past four years, there was much talk as to what the most-traveled Secretary of State would be doing next. She had been in the public eye since the late 1970s in her capacity as First Lady of Arkansas, First Lady of the United States, Senator for New York, in addition to her role in the Obama Administration. Blogs were abuzz with speculation. Would she try again for a shot at the presidency in 2016? Would she start her own non-profit organization as her husband had done? Simply citing the need to rest, Clinton bowed out of politics. In April, the William J. Clinton Foundation was renamed the Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea Clinton Foundation to emphasize the involvement of the entire family. Established by Bill Clinton in 2001, the Clinton Foundation is a charitable organization spearheading initiatives at home and abroad. Its work is organized around four broad themes: improving global health, strengthening economies, promoting health and wellness, and combatting climate change. With offices in New York City and Little Rock, Arkansas, the Foundation had its headquarters in Harlem for a decade before moving to the financial district in Lower Manhattan. The former President’s 2001 arrival in Harlem was greeted with much fanfare, including a welcome by over 2,000 residents, business owners, area politicians, community leaders, and saxophonists on his first day on the job. The Foundation’s launch at 125th street brought hopes of economic revitalization, but also fears that the former president’s presence might inadvertently price small businesses out of the neighborhood. Despite the Clinton Foundation’s more recent move to Water Street downtown, Bill retains his presidential office in Harlem.

INITIATIVES

In June, Hillary Clinton announced her plans to work at the Foundation, highlighting investments in early childhood education and the rights of girls and women. “When women participate in the economy, everyone benefits,” she noted, adding, “When women participate in peace-making and peacekeeping, we are all safer and more secure. And when women participate in politics, the effects ripple out across society.” Other projects include everything from working with developing nations and pharmaceutical companies to reducing the cost of medicine for HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis to retrofitting the Empire State Building with more energy-efficient technology, including replacing its 6,514 windows. In 2011 and 2012, the iconic Manhattan landmark saved a reported $4.7 million in energy costs as a result. The list of programs goes on: opening an industrial manufacturing zone in Haiti that is designed to create 60,000 new jobs; reversing deforestation in Malawi by helping local farmers plant 4.5 million trees and open plant nurseries; pairing entrepreneurs in select U.S. cities with established mentors to help grow their businesses; and a commitment to provide 50,000 cataract surgeries to underserved Peruvians within four years. The projects are as varied as they are ambitious. All seek to contribute by means of various partnerships. The different initiatives of the Clinton Foundation, like the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) or the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) for example, seek partners that sometimes include foreign governments, small and large corporations, donors, and aid recipients, depending on the scope of a given project. In total, the Clinton Foundation presides over more than 2,300 “commitments to action” of the kind described above. It is a mammoth operation, with over 275 regular employees and approximately 350 volunteers. In 2012, contributions, grants, and other revenue to the foundation totaled over $214 million, making it one of the top 100 largest non-profit organizations in the country.

HARDLY RESTING

In keeping with her pledge to focus on early childhood education, Hillary recently announced the Clinton Foundation’s latest partnership. “One of the best investments we can make as a nation is to give our kids the ingredients they need to develop in the first five years of life,” Clinton said in unveiling Too Small to Fail, a collaboration between the Foundation and policy think tank Next Generation that will promote and examine scientific research focused on early childhood development. The ultimate goal is to convene and educate parents, caregivers, and families throughout the U.S. to take steps to bolster children’s well-being. A private sector campaign is also planned for businesses to assist families as well. The focus of the initiative is on small but measurable action. Vice President and director of the Children and Families Program at Next Generation Ann O’Leary explained that encouraging pregnant mothers to take prenatal vitamins and having parents talk to their toddlers to improve their vocabulary are two such examples. “The initiative will also pinpoint actions that business leaders can take, like managing work schedules so that parents can spend more time with their young children, and providing education and information to consumers about the importance of early learning and early health,” she added. If it is difficult to succinctly characterize what the Clinton Foundation does, it is because their initiatives and commitments are many. The Clintons are running an operation that supports work on many different scales. The thematic areas frequently overlap, as in the Malawian case. Planting millions of trees not only had the effect of stimulating business for small farmers, but also offset agricultural carbon emissions. Economic development and climate change were addressed at the same time.

DAUGHTER ON BOARD

When she was traveling through Southeast Asia in May to survey Clinton Foundation initiatives in the region, Chelsea Clinton focused on various projects having to do with health. As a member of the Clinton Foundation Board and soon to be Vice Chair, Chelsea regularly makes site visits to project locations around the world, sometimes accompanied by her father or mother. Detailing her recent trip in a blog post, Chelsea reported that she first landed in Myanmar and traveled to a rural village where Procter & Gamble had made a Clinton Global Initiative commitment to provide clean drinking water to the village and others like it. The ethos here is one of corporate-sponsored sustainability. The immediate goal is to eradicate cholera, diarrhea, and other pathogens from drinking water. In the 21st century, it

44

seems that humanitarian projects are increasingly based on this kind of private partnership model. Chelsea also went to the New Hope for Cambodian Children orphanage in Phnom Penh, which cares for children who are HIV positive, providing them with antiretroviral (ARV) drugs. CHAI is the branch of the Clinton Foundation that is most active here, with Chelsea noting that today there is universal access in Cambodia to ARVs for the adults and children who need them. Since 2005, CHAI has liaised between the Cambodian government and the pharmaceutical companies that manufacture ARVs as well as drugs that prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV in order to bring down the cost of the drugs and to increase the supply to the afflicted population. “Now, Cambodia is uniquely placed to be one of the first countries to eliminate new pediatric HIV infections,” she said.

CONTROVERSY

Any multimillion dollar organization will have its share of controversies, and criticisms. The Clinton Foundation received some of the latter in 2008 as Hillary was being vetted for her appointment at the State Department, owing to the fact that the Foundation’s donor lists were not previously made public. In December of that year, Bill released the names of over 200,000 donors. These included foreign governments and overseas magnates who, critics feared, could pose conflicts of interest should Hillary take the helm as America’s top diplomat. Under federal law, former presidents are not required to disclose the names of those who donate to their foundations, so prior to Hillary’s Cabinet confirmation proceedings, the Clintons had chosen not to reveal Foundation benefactors. The disclosure of the donors, followed by a memorandum signed by the Obama administration and the Clinton Foundation stating that the Clinton Global Initiative would reincorporate and not receive money from foreign governments, set things in order for Hillary’s appointment as Secretary of State. The Foundation donor lists have been public ever since. As the Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea Clinton Foundation continues to grow, recently hiring McKinsey & Company’s Eric Braverman as its new CEO, all eyes remain on the eponymous heads of the non-profit. Whether Hillary will run in 2016, whether Bill will become First Gentleman, and whether Chelsea will get involved in politics remain open questions. But one thing is for sure: The Clintons show no sign of slowing down. U
