The second wheel of the year is made up of the thirteen lunar cycles occurring within the solar year-called Esbats. The word Esbat (pronounced ESS-bott) is derived from the same root as the word estrus, a Greek word meaning 'of the month.' Many cultures have also assigned names to each of the thirteen full moons.

THE MOON CYCLES Tbe New Moon

The New Moon occurs when the Moon is dark in the sky-the very beginning of the cycle. The dark, New Moon Esbat is a chance to worship the darker aspects of the Craft. This is not to be confused with evil or negative aspects. The New Moon reveals that which is hidden and in shadow rather than in light, and closely reflects our inner lives in the same way the sun reflects our light outer selves.

Use this time to celebrate new beginnings or practicing magick which involves growth.

Just a few days after the New Moon, we start to see some light in the sky as the Moon starts to emerge into a crescent shape. As the Moon grows in light, the energies of growth come with her.

Tbe t:First 1-UJrter Moon

The First Quarter Moon is grow quickly casting her light with strength, confidence and success. This is the time at which the Moon is half-full in the sky. It is waxing from the darkness of the New to the light of the Full. First Quarter Moon magick includes growth and action, new financial growth or gaining knowledge.

Tbe WaxittJ Gi66ims Moon (Maiaen)

The Moon is now waxing to Full-but it is not there yet. The Moon moves toward its peak but has not actually reached it yet. This is usually a challenging time in the cycle. Continue to do waxing, drawing, increasing, or growth spells.

The Full Moon is a time of illumination and emotional climax.

It's time to reconnect with our own emotions and inner world.

This Moon phase is the one to reap your harvest. The Full Moon Esbat tends to be a celebration-suitable for the 'lunatics' who were once believed to display their insanity under the light of the Full Moon. The word lunatic means Moon Madness. So, don't think of it as a negative.

During the Waning Moon, we will start to reconnect with our self-specifically, our own self-worth. as she starts to make her way back from Full to New, from full illumination to deep darkness. The Waning Moon, on the days just before the Dark of the Moon, are best for doing magick for removing something from your life or for clearing out negative energies.

The Thiri uarter Moon

During the Third Quarter we wi explore reconnection with the Earth. The Moon wanes even further now in the sky, back down toward the darkness of the New Moon.

Tbe wanittJ Crescent Moon

Sometimes called the Dark Moon is now fading into darkness. In this phase, we explore a connection to something much bigger.

During the Dark Moon phase, the Moon returns to darkness.

Use this time to rest, relax, be at peace and use for magick pertaining to wisdom, powerful banishing, and divination. It stays dark until the Moon cycle begins again with the next New Moon.
