Wishes transform lives. Let’s grant more than ever!

Thank you for helping us grant the most wishes we have ever granted and bringing the most impact to deserving children in our community. We couldn’t do it without your help, and we are so grateful for yoursupport of our mission.

Dear Friends of Make-A-Wish Colorado, Back in 2010, Make-A-Wish led a study that defined the impact of wishes on children and families who are part of the wish journey. This research provided quantitative data that supported what we have always believed, that a wish from Make-A-Wish enhances the quality of life for children and their families by promoting resilience and increasing well-being.

This year is going to be big for us in many ways. 2023 brings an exciting milestone for our chapter: 40 years of granting wishes! So why not make it our biggest year ever? We can’t wait to celebrate the impact each wish has with you, our community of supporters. Stay tuned for announcements on how you can celebrate with us!

Scott Make-A-WishPresidentDishong&CEOColorado

In 2022, we expanded this research to include more wish families and medical professionals. We’re thrilled to report a large majority of Make-A-Wish alumni, parents, and medical providers overwhelmingly agree that the wish experience contributes substantially to physical, mental, and emotional health; and: Was a necessary part of the medical treatment journey, improved the odds of survival, provided a support system and better health outcomes, and gave the child a better chance of recovering from their critical illness. Increased hope, strength, joy, confidence, self-esteem, quality of life, and well-being. Served as a coping mechanism and a turning point during treatment. Brought families closer together and strengthened relationships with loved ones. Helped overcome traumatic stress, hopelessness, depression, and loneliness

Best

Noting the crucial impact a wish can have in the life of a child battling a critical illness, it’s time to think big when it comes to wish granting. We are facing our biggest pipeline of children waiting for wishes that we have ever seen - but we also have our biggest goal for the number of wishes we plan to grant. We can now grant the wishes of children who have been waiting throughout the pandemic. We can now deliver strength and hope to children when they need it most. We believe in the strength of our staff, volunteers, donors and community of supporters to make a difference by granting life-changing wishes for Colorado children with critical illnesses.

LEVI’S VOICE

The voice booms from all directions at once and echoes throughout Ball Arena. The crowd goes wild - for both the Nuggets’ players and Levi, the wish kid who is announcing them!

“Introducing your Denver Nuggets!”

Levi’s wish started at The Brown Palace, where he was treated like a king and stayed in the Presidential Suite! A good night’s sleep prepared him for the big day! He rolled up in a limousine to the VIP entrance at Ball Arena, where he was greeted by the entire Nuggets and Kroenke Sports Charities team. His day took off from there as he was whisked from one activity to the next - a production meeting, a pregame interview with the Nuggets coach, a tour of the arena and TV van - and he even had time to sink a few free throws before the game began!

I wish to be a Denver Nuggets announcer Levi, 17 nervous system disorder

Levi is a 17-year-old high school student who wants to pursue a career in Broadcast Journalism, with an emphasis in sportscasting! Make-A-Wish Colorado teamed up with the Nuggets to grant Levi’s wish to be a Nuggets announcer and gave him a backstage pass to one of the biggest games of the season.

Later in the game, Levi took to the booth to announce play-by-play of the game with his hero, Chris Marlowe, the legendary Denver Nuggets announcer. Marlowe was impressed with Levi and asked him about his plans for the future. When Levi admitted to Marlowe that he wanted his job, Marlowe joked back, “Give me a few more years!”

Levi was introduced to the game’s spectators on the Jumbo-tron before the game began. He shook off any lingering nerves from being behind the mic and performed his next task with unparalleled professionalism! He had the distinct honor of introducing the Nuggets starting lineup, including last year’s MVP, Nikola Jokic. Levi’s voice boomed throughout the stadium to a roaring crowd for a moment he will never forget.

Levi’s wish was a celebration of his strength as a wish kid but also provided the opportunity for the entire community to come together and celebrate the joy of watching a wish come true. Everyone left the game knowing Levi’s nameand more importantly, his voice!

Dawn began her journey with Make-A-Wish Colorado in 1998 and has continued to serve for 24 years, granting more than 250 wishes in the meantime. During her tenure, she has taken part in just about every volunteer role available.

Nineteen-year-old Kyle is an extraordinary young man. He attends the University of Colorado Boulder where he studies engineering, sings in an acapella group and plays competitive wheelchair tennis. His most recent accomplishment was competing in the 2022 Paralympics in Beijing for slalom sit-ski racing.

“Dawn came into our lives at a dark time, but she brought so much light into it. Yes, she brought the kids some toys and gifts, but those are just the tangible gifts. She also brought us joy, laughter, smiles, relief, distraction, and most importantly, hope. When you watch your children go through something so hard, seeing them smile, laugh, and hope is truly priceless. Dawn gave that gift to us. Dawn made our lives better and makes this world a better place.”

“Kyle’s wish gave us a moment of happiness in a dark time. It allowed him to not think about his illness or challenges, but rather it just allowed him to be a kid.” - Kyle’s Mom

During his battle with cancer, Make-A-Wish Colorado granted his wish to go to Walt Disney World Resorts. Kyle recalls riding iconic Disney rides and meeting the characters; but most importantly, Kyle remembers feeling hopeful and happy.

Volunteer & Wish Kid Spotlights

Dawn Springer is more than a Make-A-Wish Colorado volunteer. She is as close as you can get to a staff member without a paycheck and as close as you can get to fairy godmother without a wand.

I wish to go to Walt Disney World Resorts Kyle, wish granted 2007 cancer

- Wish Family

Dawn’s kind and selfless heart, unshakable dedication to our mission and willingness to grow with the chapter to help in whatever way is needed encapsulates the spirit of volunteerism. She has inspired our staff, touched the hearts of our wish kids and left a profound impact on our community and the world.

He has been an avid lover of adaptive sports ever since he was five years old, when a cancerous tumor on his spinal cord left him paralyzed from the waist down. Kyle went through three rounds of chemo and had the tumor removed. He is cancer-free today.
