http://www.lapine.org BE A PART OF THE CONVERSATION!… by T. Myers President’s Day Then And Now… By T. Myers The Chamber of Commerce encourages every chamber member to take an active role in the political framework of our nation by testifying, writing letters, voicing your opinion to Representatives and Senators, and speaking on behalf of business friendly changes or threats to our business community, whenever possible. As we get ready for the President’s Day weekend, so shortly after the recent State of the Union address, the impeachment proceedings, and the fallout from both; emotions are running high and it might be time to reflect and make sense out of what we pass on to our children right now. I recall when we celebrated Lincoln’s birthday on February 12th and everyone knew that he was born in 1809. Washington’s Birthday was celebrated on February 22nd (although he was born in January). The February stories about Abe Lincoln walking miles to return six pennies in change to one of his customers after a long day of selling at the little general store and George Washington fessing up to cutting down a cherry sapling in his father’s orchard (even though there would be consequences); those were stories shared in every schoolhouse in America in order to teach the values of honesty and truthfulness. They were two important virtues Americans were to trying to emulate in their own lives. I was here when President’s Day was established to celebrate both days and before it meant another day for a three-day retail sale that would last the holiday weekend! What do we do when it comes to teaching about the presidency? How do we share the importance of the American presidency with our children? How do we model the way for using our voice when it comes to President’s Day? Especially, if we are working through the holiday. At what point do we REPRESENT our beliefs and show our kids what is important for President’s Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Flag Day, and Labor Day? How will you use your voice? Contact the Chamber for information. 541-536-9771.
