Due to Mumbai City’s growth, one of Asia’s largest slums, Dharavi, is facing demolition because of its high land prices. The threat of “top-down” master plans addresses limited re-housing but ignores both existing communities and their livelihoods. The scope of this project is to develop a live/work mixed-use building that not only houses, but also accommodates and encourages both existing and future industries for its residences. This redevelopment intends to pay homage to the site’s existing use, while addressing all stakeholders involved and creating a new design vocabulary, geared at improving slum conditions and invoking a strong sense of pride.
