Every summer growing up, my mother drove me east to visit her parents on Long Island. We spent days at Jones Beach, walked the boardwalk, spread a blanket by the water as waves lumbered up the sand. She swam out past the breakers so far I thought she would keep on swimming, stroke after stroke, until she slipped over the horizon as if she wanted to swim away from herself, and nothing was left but the sea and her body.
In the evenings, we strolled down the streets of her hometown. She pointed to houses where Dr. Fenton lived—his daughter, her closest friend, a swell girl. Maples and elms shrouded the street. A few cars passed by. We walked for miles, past the Methodist Church where she was married, by the links where she found lost balls and sold them to the golfers. I found myself entering her life almost as if it were my life. Each time she returned, I could feel her yearning to leave the life she had currently lived and recapture what had been. She let her hair down and laughed with her brother’s family, the music of voices rising, and she seemed more herself than I’d ever seen her at our home in Glen Brook, a western suburb of Chicago. Her exacting life there was one of a business executive’s wife. Everything had to be just so. Appearances were everything. Not a napkin out of place.
I loved seeing her being herself. I wished I could help her stay that way, but I was the part of her new life she couldn’t forsake. That’s why I felt an affinity for the east coast.
Growing up in the western suburbs of Chicago, heritage, if there was any, consisted of who owned the grandest house in the newest development. And no one stayed long enough to pass a house to another generation. Once the kids left, parents moved south to condos by the beach.
I yearned for deep roots. At least in the East, some of my favorite authors—Thoreau, Emerson, and Whitman—had laid claim to the deeply American and disturbingly unconventional ideas. When I had a chance to go East to the original colonies, fifty miles west of the nation’s capital, it was not so much to reclaim my mother’s life but to find my own.
How was I do that? To go where no one knew me. To slough off my status as one of the Follett boys. That would resolve part of the problem, but not all of it.
Another reason for getting far from home, one I kept to myself, was to erase what had haunted me for years. To escape the attraction I had for men, and to shake off the stigma I read about in the Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders.
I had spent two years at Vanderbilt Divinity School—there to avoid the draft and the Vietnam War—plenty of time to investigate a cause for my attraction. According to the SMMD manual, I had a “sociopathic personality disorder.” It sounded horrible. And it felt that way, too, like a muscle spasm that wouldn’t go away. I was a sexual deviant. Saying the word “homosexual” terrified me. I’d read newspapers accounts of men losing jobs, of being sentenced to prison, even being killed for being homosexual. I didn’t want to be sociopathic, nor did I want to be killed.
I thought of myself as a straight guy. Normal. That word suited me just fine. My goal was to look in a mirror and see that the face I thought should be there was my face, and not someone else’s. But that other face kept reappearing despite my efforts to erase it.
My plan, put simply, was to put my life in order. If I went home, my father could have pulled a few strings, gotten me a job. (He was Vice-President of Motorola.) But if I could get away from my past and, instead, go to a rural town, spend time alone, and decide what I really wanted in life, I could sort out my ambivalences about who I was and what that meant about the way I wanted to be. I could avoid being like my mother, living one life on the coast and another in the Midwest. I could find a new life and keep to it.
My friend, Ken McDonald, who I befriended at Vanderbilt told me that the local Community Action Agency was hiring a Head Start Director. Head Start was a new program, part of President Johnson’s “Great Society.” He said I should apply. Ken once aspired to be an Episcopal minister but, as a Black man, found even a liberal church was racist. A career in public services was the better option, so he moved back to his home in the West Virginia panhandle.
His suggestion appealed to me.
I thought that Head Start was a program for teenagers who needed a head start in high school. I filled out the application, citing my being a director of a Folk School in Egan, Tennessee, and youth minister in Nashville. I drove northeast to Pearsall Flats. The main street in town, Route 50, bisected the northern panhandle, running from its eastern end to its western border and straight on to California. Pearsall Flats, nestled in the Potomac River valley, rested between two ridges that followed the South Branch of the Potomac River.
