Iam so excited to share the 2024 Annual Report of the University of Wisconsin Department of Pediatrics. As the interim chair of the department during the report period — July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2024 — I had the pleasure to be part of recognizing and celebrating several milestones for our department.

Two milestones of note include 10-year milestones for our NICU at American Family Children’s Hospital and our Pediatric Complex Care Program. In addition to recognizing the lasting impact and excellence of some programs, we have also celebrated an important first milestone of launching the UW Health Kids Heart Transplant Program.

At the national level, we have brought the excitement and opportunity that our department represents to hosting a department booth at the 2024 Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting, the largest combined meeting in our field. Within our department, we started a Clinical Care Week to focus on learning and on highlighting our clinical programs. The addition of this program rounds out our three focus weeks of clinical (fall), education (winter), and research (spring). Regarding our annual Research Week, our May 2024 event saw the highest number of posters submitted to our Poster Session, with 78 total posters from presenters in our department and throughout the School of Medicine and Public Health.

Our department initiatives in areas of quality improvement, well-being, professional development, advocacy, and DEI continue to grow and thrive. The advocacy team hosted a community-centered firearm injury prevention workshop. Our well-being team provided a year-long initiative supporting department members in their pursuit of productive, meaningful, and collaborative work through the How We Work initiative. We’ve bolstered the expertise of our department through the involvement of our joint and affiliate faculty across these initiatives, and we recognized the excellence of our staff through a redesigned staff recognition program.

As I look to the milestone of our transition to a new chair for the coming year, I’m greatly appreciative of all the contributions to our department across faculty, providers, staff, and trainees. Please enjoy reading the 2024 Annual Report.

Department hosts first booth at PAS meeting in Toronto

The Department of Pediatrics had an exciting showing at the 2024 Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) meeting in Toronto in May 2024. New this year was the department’s outreach booth in the exhibit hall. Literature, signage, and booth attendants encouraged members of the academic community to “train with us, learn with us, and work with us.” Hundreds of people stopped by the booth to enjoy a variety of branded outreach materials, candy cow pies, and photo opportunities with Bucky.

Staff members from across the department were part of the effort. Members of the faculty recruitment, support staff, communications, and administration leadership teams helped plan and design the booth and its marketing and outreach materials.

UW Health Transplant Center completes its first pediatric heart transplant

In August 2023, just a few months after the opening of the UW Health Kids Heart Transplant Program, Sezar, an 11-year-old from Rockford, Illinois, became the first patient to receive a heart transplant at American Family Children’s Hospital (AFCH).

“Building this program, and then experiencing the joy of watching Sezar walk out of the hospital with a new heart, was a culmination of years of work,” said Sonya Kirmani, MD, assistant professor in the Division of Cardiology and medical director of the UW Health Kids Pediatric Heart Transplant Program. “Every member of our team came together to care for this very sick boy, and we are thrilled he is doing so well.”

This milestone transplant makes the UW Health Transplant Center one of only six centers in the nation — and the only one in the Midwest — transplanting five major organs in adults and kids. After Sezar’s transplant, the team performed three additional heart transplantations before the close of the fiscal year.

For 10 years, the Pediatric children with medical complexity

In March 2024, the Pediatric Complex recognized its 10-year anniversary, marking important milestone for the program medical management and care coordination children with medical complexity and Mary Ehlenbach, MD, associate professor director of the Pediatric Complex Care explained that the program was established recognition that children with medical a unique population by nature of their conditions, whose care needs differ from

Pediatric Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy Program marks its first year of successes

NICU celebrates a decade of operation

After two years of planning and preparation, Allison Redpath, MD, associate professor and medical director of pediatric dialysis, Division of Nephrology, and Melissa Cercone, MD, professor and fellowship director, Division of Critical Care, and a legion of nurses and other health professionals, started a pediatric ICU continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) program completely separate from the acute adult dialysis program. The Pediatric CRRT Program launched in October 2022 and last year entered its second year of operation. Data show that it is more effective and more beneficial than Redpath and Cercone could have imagined. “We have been able to reach four times the number of patients compared to historical norms,” Cercone said. The introduction of the program made American Family Children’s Hospital only the second place in the state of Wisconsin where a pediatric patient could get this acute renal therapy specifically for children.

Pediatric Complex Care Program has supported complexity and their families

A Night at the Children’s Hospital

The Department of Pediatrics hosted A Night at the Children’s Hospital in May 2024. The event, jointly planned by the Pediatrics Residency Program and the Pediatrics Interest Group, is held annually as a way to increase interest in pediatric medicine among Phase 1 medical students. About 20 residents and faculty members, some with their own children in tow to serve as standardized patients, joined nearly 20 medical students for a fun and educational evening at American Family Children’s Hospital.

Medical students learned about basic pediatric exam skills, participated in a Q&A session, and received a guided tour of the hospital. The event provides an important early experience in caring for children at a time when many medical students are still deciding on their future specialties.

NIH funding exceeds $233 million since 2015

The Department of Pediatrics at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health has ranked among the Top 20 medical school pediatrics departments in research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the past nine years, according to the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. It ranked in the Top 10 four times. Since 2015, the department has received a total of $233,755,344 in NIH funding.

A SELECTION OF NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH (NIH) AWARDS

Vaping cessation in adolescents and young adults

Brian Williams, MD, assistant professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine and Complex Care, received a K08 grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to study nicotine addiction treatment in adolescents and young adults via both medication and psychosocial interventions. His project, entitled “Addressing the Vaping Epidemic in Adolescents and Young Adults: Advancing Our Understanding of Cessation Treatment and Engagement,” will utilize the resources of the nationally recognized University of Wisconsin Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention.

Childhood allergy and the neonatal environment

Asthma is a complex condition with both genetic and environmental contributors to disease inception. The Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program in the Office of the Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded Anne Marie Singh, MD, associate professor and interim chief, Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Rheumatology, an award to study asthma and asthma-related health disparities. Her project, “Childhood Allergy and the NeOnatal Environment (CANOE) ECHO Pediatric FollowUp and New Enrollment,” will investigate how neighborhood-level (e.g., air pollution, nearby green space) and individual-level (e.g., microbiome) exposures alter DNA methylation and transcriptional responses at the epithelial barrier to promote asthma and asthma-related disparities. The studies will help identify non-invasive biomarkers and define actionable exposures for intervention. The study will leverage the existing CANOE cohort of 125 families and enroll up to 400 more pregnant women and newborns in and around Madison.

Improving the potency of T cell therapies against cancer

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapies are FDA-approved adoptive T cell therapies that have been genetically engineered to recognize and kill cancer cells and have improved complete remission rates compared to existing treatments with potential of long-term cure. However, effective CAR T cell therapy is highly variable across patients. The National Cancer Institute recently granted Christian Capitini, MD, professor and chief, Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplant, an R01 award for his project, “Label-free Imaging of CAR T Cell Metabolism.” MPIs include Melissa Skala, PhD, investigator in the Morgridge Institute for Research and professor of biomedical engineering, and Kris Saha, PhD, associate professor of biomedical engineering. The label-free single-cell metabolic imaging technologies developed in this proposal could streamline processes and interventions for consistently potent T cell therapy and increase our knowledge of CAR T cell metabolism in vitro and in vivo.

Pediatric ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic condition that causes sores and swelling in the colon and can lead to cramping, belly pain, and diarrhea. Upadacitinib is an oral once-a-day JAK inhibitor used to treat various inflammatory conditions. It has had FDA approval for adults with UC since 2022. Access to novel therapeutics in pediatric UC often lags adult medicine by an average of eight to 10 years. There is an urgent need to understand the dosing, tolerance, and safety for pediatric patients with UC as metabolism and disease-specific factors often lead to modifications from the typical adult dosing regimens. Daniel O’Connell, MD, associate professor and interim chief, Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, received funding from AbbVie for an industry-sponsored clinical trial entitled, “A Phase 3 Multicenter Study to Evaluate Efficacy, Safety, and Pharmacokinetics of Upadacitinib with Open-Label Induction, Randomized, Double-Blind Maintenance and Open-Label Long-Term Extension in Pediatric Subjects.”

Providing human donor milk to infants needing supplemental feeding Oresta Rule, MD, assistant professor in both the Division of Neonatology and Newborn Nursery and the Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, received a grant from the UnityPoint Health – Meriter Foundation for her research entitled, “Providing Equitable Access to Human Donor Milk (HDM) for Breastfeeding Dyads Who Require Early Limited Supplemental Feedings.” Rule aims to increase equitable access to human donor milk for infants at risk of feeding difficulties and hospital readmission. This would limit hospital readmission of the infants due to excessive weight loss, dehydration, or hyperbilirubinemia.

Clinical Care Week

In September 2023, the Department of Pediatrics introduced its newest hybrid conference, Clinical Care Week, rounding out its series of three focus weeks that highlight the department’s academic missions. Clinical Care Week joins Research Week, held annually in spring, and Medical Education Week, held annually in winter.

Clinical Care Week is designed to foster an interdisciplinary learning community among health care providers in the department and throughout the institution and beyond. The weeklong conference underscores innovations in clinical care taking place in Wisconsin and nationally through a mix of virtual and in-person events. The inaugural week’s topics included simulation, community partnerships, integrative medicine, and QI. It featured the Multidisciplinary Forum, which highlighted several cross-disciplinary clinics lead by department members, and Two Minutes, Two Slides, Two Questions, during which residents shared their work in clinical innovation.

Two years ago, the QI Scholarship program introduced INSPIRE-QI, a department program that invites early- and mid-career faculty members and fellows to develop quality improvement (QI) skills through a mentored scholarly project. A year later, it introduced INSPIRE-QI Pro, which continues this work and challenges participants to disseminate their scholarly QI projects through supported writing. Last year, the program launched INSPIRE-QI Mini, a monthly series that combines the INSPIRE-QI educational curriculum with office hours to provide department members with the knowledge and peer support needed to work through a scholarly project. Each session begins with a 15-minute mini lesson by a departmental expert, and the remaining time is reserved for attendees to discuss their projects with peers.

How We Work

The yearlong How We Work initiative, aimed at supporting department members in their pursuits to engage in productive, efficient, meaningful, and collaborative work, concluded at the end of 2023. Department members who participated in How We Work reported a reduction in email interruptions and an increase in the use of time blocking. Nearly 60% of employees said How We Work supported their overall well-being. The effort inspired new resources in the department, including the “Gathering Guide,” a manual designed to help department members make the most of their time when hosting or attending meetings and other gatherings. It covers topics such as creating purposeful agendas, considering meeting alternatives, storing materials, being a good participant, and social gatherings.
