Guest Policy Any eligible person from the above list may register one additional person in the same course, as their guest, at the same course fee level.

Children Mini Courses is a lifelong education program designed for adult learners. Participants must be 18 years old to enroll in a Mini Course.

Enrollees who are 16 or 17 years old may participate with concurrent paid registration and attendance by a parent/legal guardian. Children under 16 years of age are only allowed to enroll in courses specifically designated for their age group and/or in courses that state “parent and child” in the course description. For liability reasons, there are no exceptions to this policy.

the wisconsin union craftshop The Craftshop, “where art is a verb,” was the first open studio arts facility ever opened in a college union. Located on the fourth floor of Memorial Union, working media include ceramics, woodworking, traditional b&w photography, art metals, stained glass, glass fusing and more.

Need instruction, take the Mini Course. Know enough and looking for the space and tools to work, the Crafshop sells access permits by the semester, half-semester and hourly. Basic Woodworking

Build Your Own Longboard

Learn basic woodworking procedures and safe operation of hand and power tools while building a Parsons-style table. Designed for people with little or no experience and to help you learn all the basic techniques you need to know to continue woodworking on your own.

Wood supplies (approx. $40-$80+, depending on final project dimensions and wood choice) discussed first class. Alternate project is possible at Instructor’s discretion. Imagine gliding down the street on a skateboard you designed and built! Learn to build a classic pintail (or custom), shaped, topmount longboard. We will cover everything you need to know to take your design from the drawing board to a functional longboard.

Includes how to build simple concave forming presses, pressing and shaping boards, finishing techniques and mounting of your hardware. Starting with just a few boards you can create beautiful, professional grade custom-made wooden frames. Learn basic woodworking skills as you create your own frame and finish framing a project of your choice. Instruction includes safe use of hand and power tools. Jewelry Design: Bezel Setting

Here is an introduction to screen printing from photographic images. Learn the process of photo emulsion screen printing. We will cover the process from beginning to end including how to transfer your image, preparing the screen, making prints with safe, water-based acrylic inks. Japanese Shibori Cloth Dyeing

Needle Felting with Wool

Explore the the ancient art of Japanese Shibori. Shibori, which translates as “shapedresist dyeing,”is a general term that encompasses hundreds of ways of manipulating cloth, such as binding, stitching,folding, twisting, and compressing, to achieve colorful, artistic designs on fabric. We will learn how to achieve many different surface designs on fabrics using this elegant yet simple art, which has been a Japanese tradition for over 750 years. We will work with the three main types of shibori: arashi shibori (pole wrapped), nui shibori (stitched), and itajime (folded and clamped). We will use indigo dye, one of the oldest hues used in textile dyeing, and a traditional dye in the art of shibori, as we create unique fabric designs using the various shibori techniques. 3 Meetings.

Quilled Paper Snowflake Ornaments

Quilling, or paper filigree, is an art form that uses of strips of paper rolled, shaped, and glued together to create unique decorative designs. The paper, wound around a “quill” to create basic shapes is glued and these shaped coils can be arranged to form holiday ornaments, flowers, leaves, and other decorative patterns. Outdoor adventures Join the fun on Lake Mendota and learn to sail!

On the first day we will cover on-land training on sailing theory and rigging the boat (Tech dinghy). You may also get out on the water if time and weather permits. Come prepared to get wet! The second and third classes will consist of significant on-the-water instruction.

Sandhill Crane Weekend Odyssey

The staging of Sandhill Cranes at the Jasper-Pulaski National Wildlife Area in northern Indiana is one of the more imposing spectacles in all of nature. Assembled in one area can be as many as 20,000 cranes! This is the second largest stopover area for Sandhills in the US. Join our weekend odyssey to witness this impressive natural occurrence and learn about this regal and once-endangered bird.

On Sunday we will visit the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Here you can see majestic sand dunes at the base of Lake Michigan and experience this unique environment. Course fee includes instruction, lodging (dbl. occupancy) and transportation. You are responsible for food and entertainment expenses. Full refund of course fees if we cancel a course for any reason. IF YOU REQUEST A REFUND, A $5.00 FEE WILL BE DEDUCTED FROM YOUR REFUND. TO RECEIVE A REFUND, NOTICE MUST BE RECEIVED BY OUR OFFICE THREE (3) BUSINESS DAYS BEFORE THE FIRST CLASS MEETING. No refunds for inability to attend published rain dates.

Refund of Membership fees requires return of Membership Card. Refunds for fees paid by cash or check can take up to 4 weeks to process. Refunds for fees paid by credit card are credited to your account immediately. Receipts will not be mailed for credit card or web-based refunds. What about Transfers and Credit Vouchers?

Transfers and Credit Vouchers are possible up to three business days prior to the starting date of any course. A $5.00 FEE IS ASSESSED for transferring or requesting a Credit Voucher. No Credit Voucher will be issued after second class session for multiple session courses. One-session and individual lesson courses require three business day minimum prior to class start date for Transfer or Credit Voucher requests. Credit Vouchers are good towards any Mini Course, for one year from date of issue.

Returned Checks A $30 fee is due on any returned check.
