THE NEXT CHALLENGE IS HERE. It is one of the most important and significant challenges Hoofers has ever undertaken. As part of the current Memorial Union Reinvestment, key Hoofer facilities are being renovated for the next generation of Hoofers. Meeting this challenge requires individual contributions and a team effort. If you’re a Hoofer, you already know how to make things happen. Let’s do it again. NOW IS THE TIME. Hoofers moved into the lower level of the Union in 1939. This much-utilized space has witnessed more than seven decades of enterprising, triumphant and creative activity. Thousands of people discovered new passions, learned valuable skills and formed lifelong friendships here. It’s time for these resilient, sturdy old spaces to get a facelift.

OUR GOAL IS AN AMBITIOUS $500,000 The Hoofer facilities campaign includes four priority projects. All renovations will incorporate safety, accessibility and sustainability upgrades. M E N D OTA LO D G E F I R E P L AC E Hoofers can use the new all-season Mendota Lodge for meetings, instruction and socializing while enjoying spectacular views of Lake Mendota all year. The Lounge will become an even more popular gathering place in cooler weather when Hoofers are able to gather around the proposed new fireplace to study, talk with friends or plan the next outing. LAKEFRONT PIERS The piers, must be replaced to improve safety and increase docking access for all sailboats, canoes, kayaks and standup paddleboards. The new piers will upgrade the physical appearance of the lakefront, reduce maintenance costs, and improve docking safety and access. G A L L E Y K I TC H E N In the new galley kitchen, Hoofers will be able to store, organize and prepare food for meetings, trips and social activities. Funding is needed to completely finish the space from cabinetry and countertops to appliances and lighting.
EQUESTRIAN CENTER The Riding Club, one of the oldest Hoofer activities, celebrates the special bond between horse and rider. The existing Equestrian Center has already cleared the first hurdle with a recent rebuilding of the outdoor riding arena. Additional funding will help support necessary construction projects and infrastructure maintenance and repairs. Adding a pole shed storage area would enable the animals to have their own space separate from equipment.
JOIN THE HAROLD C. BRADLEY S O C I E T Y A N D “ D O I T F O R D O C .” Harold C. “Doc” Bradley was a popular chemistry professor at the University and an outdoor sports enthusiast. Together with the legendary Porter Butts, three students and a Union staff member, the group founded Hoofers in 1931. The name “Hoofers” referred to independent people ready to roll up their sleeves and make their own way under their own power. The name proved prophetic as just a year later members raised money to replace the UW ski jump. Hoofers went on to help raise the funds for their space in the Union. Today, Hoofers continue to support their activities with pride and commitment. The Harold C. Bradley Society recognizes both the vision of its namesake as well as the energy, competitive spirit and generosity of Hoofers everywhere. You are invited to become a charter member of the Harold C. Bradley Society with your gift of $500 or more to the Hoofer facilities campaign. You will be acknowledged on the Hoofer website and in Hoofer publications.
