BIG FISH: A RECAP

Wisco’s Big Fish musical that performed from March 3 to March 5 was a huge hit. The audience was swept away in the colorful story of Edward Bloom as he shared his tall tales. Congratulations to all the actors who worked so long and hard for such an amazing performance. The dancing and singing astounded viewers, filling their eyes and ears with laughter, sorrow, and hope. The music from the live pit orchestra surrounded the audience with lovely music, making the experience even more magical. One of the talented musicians, Emily Wendorf, who was in the pit orchestra said, “Being able to create the magic by playing in the pit orchestra is a great blessing because it allows me to use my God given abilities and work with people that have talents different from my own ”

Spotlight on Black History: Angela Davis

Black History Month tends to celebrate a canon of established African American figures, most of whom are very well known in American culture The achievements of MLK’s protests, the black independence espoused by Malcolm X, and the courage displayed by Harriet Tubman are often given special focus While what these people accomplished is beyond important, and their contributions deserve the recognition they’ve been given, black history stretches beyond them The Civil Rights Movement and the abolition of slavery are not the only two events in African American history There have been other pivotal and brilliant black individuals who have been overshadowed, and their greatness has remained hidden from mainstream culture

Many African Americans have taken action against those who sought to preserve their oppression. One such person is Angela Y. Davis, a woman who, on top of reaching for equality for African Americans, also preached for the fair treatment of other oppressed groups by advocating for women's rights, an end to the Vietnam war, and economic justice for the poor and disenfranchised.

Davis’ path to upholding such values of justice and equality stem largely from two places: her childhood in Birmingham, Alabama a city infamous for its anti-black bombings prior to and during the Civil Rights Movement and the Frankfurt School, where she received her college education and learned about the dangers of various forms of oppression.

She took her personal history with racism and the education she gained through her college experience in order to form a unique perspective on the world, one rooted in the importance of both knowledge and action. She presented this to activist groups and to the general public alike, both of whom often accepted them. She did this because, according to her, it’s not enough

to know there are problems in the world and not protest them, nor is it enough to protest the problems in the world without knowing what’s causing them and how they may be prevented. On this point she has been unwavering, despite the challenges she has faced for her convictions

The vast majority of such challenges come down to the fact that Davis was active during a time in which being black, being a woman, and wanting major political change were all more difficult than they are now; being all three at once was no easy task. However, Davis refused to give up. Even when her views led her to be hounded by the U.S. media and despised by many, she did not back down. When America finally made some progress in terms of equality with the passing of the Civil Rights Act, she was still not content to just give up her fight for justice and equality and accept what strides towards those ideals had been gained, for she knew that a better society was always possible This commitment to her values continues to be with her to this day. Davis remains constantly attuned to the struggles of oppressed people throughout the world, and she has not stopped fighting for them. She refuses to give up hope for complete and utter equality, even if it means facing challenges in order for the goal to be achieved As she puts it, “freedom is a constant struggle ”

HOW PIZZA AFFECTED AMERICA

GOOEY BROWNIES RECIPE

When someone mentions brownies, most likely the first thing that pops into someone’s mind are the luscious images of soft, gooey, warm homemade brownies These brownies are bound to attract a crowd So, how does one make them?

Ingredients:

4 oz of butter

0 5 oz of vegetable oil

3 5 oz of white sugar

3 5 oz of brown sugar

2 eggs

a small spoon of vanilla extract paste

According to PizzaCalc, Americans eat 350 slices of pizza per second. In fact, on average, an American eats over 6,000 slices in their lifetime Pizza has been an incredibly popular meal choice for over a century This famous food first came to America in the early 1900s The first U S pizzeria opened in 1905 in New York Pizza has had tremendous effects on America, both physically and culturally However, before it came to America, pizza was originally created and popularized in Naples, Italy

Although pizza is one of the most popular foods in America, it can also be a large health risk. Pizza seems harmless in small amounts, but in reality, some of the health risks can include acne, weight gain, raised blood pressure, higher chances of a stroke, and even vulnerability to cancer. These seem like drastic health risks for just a simple slice of pizza, but all of the ingredients add up to an unhealthy meal choice “A study in 1,352 people found that people who consumed over 70 grams of ready-made products like pizza daily were more likely to have more belly fat than those who consumed under 70 grams per day

Many types of pizza, particularly frozen and fast-food varieties, tend to be high in calories, fat, and sodium More

1g of salt

a small spoon of coffee powder

2 oz of low-gluten flour

2 oz of cocoa powder

3 5 oz of dark chocolate

Prepare 4 oz of butter. Put the butter in some thin tinfoil. After, put the thin tinfoil in a bowl that contains hot water, so that the butter can be melted (Another method that can be used is to simply microwave the butter for several seconds )

processed varieties may contain unhealthy ingredients, such as colorings, added sugar, and preservatives,” says Jillian Kubala ("Is Pizza Healthy?

Nutrition Tips for Pizza Lovers")

Aside from health risks, pizza has had a significant impact on American culture Pizza has become insanely popular over the last century, ever since it first appeared Pizza came to America when 5 5 million Italians immigrated from Italy to the U S for a better life, and they brought pizza with them Pizza was

Mix the following ingredients together in a large bowl: 0.5 oz of vegetable oil, 3.5 oz of brown sugar, and 3 5 oz of white sugar Once properly mixed, the color will be a shade of dark brown Next, place 2 eggs and a little bit of vanilla paste into the bowl, and stir them together until evenly mixed.

In another bowl, sift 2 oz of low-gluten flour. Take 2 oz of flour, 2 oz of cocoa powder, 1g (0 035 oz) of salt, a small spoon of coffee powder and stir them evenly After this, put 3 5 oz of dark chocolate into it, stir them evenly Slowly mix in the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients.

Preheat the oven to 350F. Put this into a greased square pan (8 x 8 or 13 x 9) Then place the pan into the oven for 35 to 40 mins

adapted over time and slowly took on the form we see today--the heavily Americanized version of this cheesy, greasy, glutinous meal. Over 61,000 pizzerias have popped up in the U.S. and make up a 38 billion-dollar industry 17% of all restaurants in the USA are pizza shops In fact, Americans eat 100 acres of pizza every day!

Overall, pizza has developed over the course of decades, starting off from one simple pizzeria to becoming a remarkable component in America’s culture and diet Based on the current industry, pizza will continue to flourish

SOUP FOR THE SOUL

When it comes to picking favorite foods, everyone will express various opinions Some people prefer savory foods and believe that meats such as chicken or pork are the best. On the other hand, some prefer sweet foods and believe that desserts like cakes or brownies are the most delicious. While this list could go on and on, I would like to introduce a new potential favorite food to you: Hot Pot

When winter comes, the freezing cold can make the months depressing It can sometimes make it seem like we lose our feelings, since our hands, faces, and feet all feel very cold and uncomfortable. Conversely, a treat that tends to pop into my mind Hot Pot brings all the opposite feelings It’s warm, comforting, and a meal that’s eaten with several others What exactly is Hot Pot? A big pot is placed in the middle of the table, with a partition in the middle to separate the different flavors. Soup is placed in the different areas in the pot. After the soup is done, different ingredients such as meat, shrimp or vegetables are placed into it

How does one go about making Hot Pot? First, a Hot Pot broth needs to be made People usually purchase packaged Hot Pot soup bases. These have different flavors, such as Lee Kum Kee’s Soup Base; this base in particular has a seafood flavor. Various other bases can be used ranging from tomato soup to spicy bases All of these can be bought at an Asian market Second, some ingredients for the hot pot must be prepared It needs to be balanced There will be different kinds of foods; the ingredients usually are vegetables, mushrooms, meat, and seafood. One of the most common vegetables are leafy greens. Wash them thoroughly and cut them in simple pieces For the vegetables that have small leaves, it is best to leave them how they are and put them into the pot The larger leafy greens need to be cut into small pieces (1-2 inches) and placed into the pot. (Leafy greens that we can use are the following: cabbage, choy sum, and spinach.) Other vegetables: need to be peeled and cut into pieces that are

¼-⅛ inches; it only needs a short time to be cooked For example, lotus root, potato, sweet potato, pumpkin/kabocha squash, Daikon radish, tomatoes (cut into wedges), and corn (cut whole ears of corn into 1-inch pieces) all work in this recipe

Mushrooms:

Enoki mushrooms (slice 1/2-1 inch of the base off, and separate the larger bundle of enoki into smaller more manageable bundles. Cook until wilted; cook time: 30-45 seconds)

Wood ears (soak to reconstitute, rinse any dirt or sand off, and remove any woody ends; cook time: 2-3 minutes)

King mushrooms (Trim the ends, thinly slice; cook time: 2 minutes)

Shiitake mushrooms (Trim woody stems, slice, and add to the pot early, as they will flavor the broth; cook time: 2-3 minutes)

Oyster mushrooms (Clean thoroughly; cook time: 2-3 minutes)

Fashion is extremely versatile; many people view it as an outlet of creative self-expression While everyone should retain his/her own individual fashion styles, there are a few popular trends this year to note Cargo pants--These pants are baggy and can be styled with many different tops such as sheer tops with a tank under, plain T's, or shirts with fun colors and patterns

Denim-- Denim skirts, shirts, pants, or accessories (for example, claw clips) are in as well There are so many different sizes, designs, and colors to choose from when it comes to styling with denim.

Besides those trends, whole aesthetics are also experiencing a steady incline in popularity Bohemian style--which is full of fun beachy patterns and designs People love to use fashion as a means of expression “Fashion is a good way to express yourself through what you wear,” says Anna Ognenoff (‘26).

LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS

Lunar New Year is the most important and festive holiday of the year for many Asian countries. The word “lunar” means determined by the moon; Lunar New Year marks the beginning of the lunar calendar or lunisolar calendar year, of which the months are categorized by moon cycles To celebrate this holiday, Wisco holds an annual Lunar New Year party and invites international students and mentors to attend.

Lunar New Year is celebrated by different cultures in varying ways For example, Japanese people do Hatsumode, which is the practice of visiting a shrine or temple Vietnamese and Chinese people will often give red pocket money to children and visit their families and relatives as well. Of course, there are several common

traditions, too, such as holding big meals with families and lighting firecrackers and fireworks.

The annual Wisco Lunar New Year Party this year focused on sharing cultural differences and joy

The best-rated feature of the party is the delicious food Students try traditional food from different countries, such as: Chinese dumplings and boiled fish, Vietnamese spring rolls, and Korean kimchi. Food always brings back fond memories Being able to eat food from home in a foreign country brings satisfaction and happiness to international students As a student described, “The food in my hometown seems to make me feel like I am at home.” For the mentors, who are American students, these foods

brought them new experiences and opened the door to a new world Welcome to the world of foreign food!

The most common comment from the students regarding the festivities as a whole is “fun” and “interesting.” The organizers of the party provided different kinds of card games, like chess, Chinese mahjong, poker, and Vietnamese Bộ bài Tây. The international students taught American students how to play these table games, which brought people closer together. Also, the students set up karaoke to give people a chance to show off their voices During this celebration, students sang together and encouraged others

The overall atmosphere was very harmonious; the audience either sang with the people performing, or they cheered and applauded

The photo booth provided people with a way to record their fun times People called their good friends over into the booth, made funny faces together, and took pictures This activity was very meaningful, especially for the seniors, since this is their last year at WLHS. Photos save beautiful memories forever. When students look at the photos many years later, those unforgettable memories will bloom again.

The Lunar New Year party brought many people closer together and made an indelible time in their memory It also allowed for people to have a greater international perspective and to understand multi-national cultures

MOVIE BASED ON A GAME?

THE HISTORY OF ST. PATRICK'S DAY

Fellow nerds rejoice, for we are about to see an interpretation of what was once a figment of our imaginations That’s right Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is set to release on March 31st of this year This movie is anticipated to be a large improvement from the one released in 2000, which garnered an average rating of 2-3 stars. This year’s version is rated PG-13 and is 2 hours and 14 minutes long. The trailer displays impressive graphics and contains scenes full of fighting and magic. The plot revolves around a group of heroes that band together in order to stop a force of evil that they accidentally unleashed

There are plenty of notable actors featured in the movie, each playing a different class from the original game Chris Pine plays a bard, Regè-Jean Page plays a paladin, Michelle Rodriguez plays a barbarian, Hugh Grant acts as a rogue, and Justice Smith portrays a sorcerer The directors, John Francis Daley and Jonathon Goldstein, are known for movies of somewhat similar tastes and hopefully developed an outstanding story stemming from the bountiful source material. It will be interesting to see how the characters develop and how the story unfolds, due to Dungeons & Dragons being a chooseyour-own-adventure game.

What comes to mind when someone mentions St. Patrick's Day? Maybe the first thing that pops into your mind is the color green Some of you may imagine sitting on the side of a road watching a vibrant parade A few of you may even think of a short, bearded leprechaun St Patrick’s Day is a famous Irish-American holiday; however, the majority of the population doesn’t know why it’s celebrated What exactly is St Patrick’s Day, and why do we celebrate it?

St Patrick is both the patron saint of Ireland and their national apostle. He was born in Britain, but he was kidnapped at 16 and taken to Ireland. He either escaped or was released and later returned to Britain and became a priest. He later served Ireland as a missionary.

He is often credited with explaining the Holy Trinity to the Irish people using the famous Irish shamrock, which made him become an eminent and widely-known figure

Patrick’s Day is a commemoration of the death of St Patrick in the fifth century A D As a result, starting in the ninth century, the feast of St Patrick has been celebrated every year in

Ireland. Ireland’s influence has been spread across the world as well, most notably in America where some of these traditions are still done today Homesick Irish immigrants began celebrating this holiday in the United States in 1737, and St Patrick’s Day has grown in popularity each year There are parades in cities all across America as a way to help celebrate St Patrick’s Day

One may wonder, how do leprechauns connect to this patron saint? The famous leprechauns were not originally intended to be part of the celebration, as they have nothing to do with St. Patrick. However, since St. Patrick’s Day has developed and changed over time, this has become a holiday celebrating everything about the Irish culture. Because of this, Leprechauns, prominent beings from Irish folklore, have become lumped into the regular recognizable symbols and celebrations of this day

That is just a wee bit of information explaining the background of America’s favorite green holiday

VALENTINE'S DAY POLL

“Will you be my Valentine?”

Though this question is often plastered on cards and sprinkled throughout numerous messages, it isn't often actually asked around Valentine’s Day So Pilot asked students--If you have/had a Valentine

For the first question, the most picked option was all of the above It seems clear that most people expect a lot for Valentine’s Day.

Knowing what someone wants on Valentine’s Day can be tricky. Even though it is important to be grateful regardless of what you get, sometimes you wish for something else.

This first question Pilot asked was based on what most people expect to receive on Valentine’s Day--the usual gifts This next question focuses on what a person actually wants

The majority answered no, meaning they prefer a typical Valentine’s Day gift. Sometimes predictability is safe and easy for the person receiving the gift, but not so much for the person giving it. If most would appreciate and want the ideal Valentine’s day gift, why is it so hard to trust your valentine would be happy with their gift? Maybe it isn’t so hard after all

St Valentine was martyred on February 14, 270, and he was known for secretly marrying couples.

St Valentine's Day was established by a Pope at the end of the 5th century in order to replace a commonly celebrated pagan festival

The tradition of celebrating Valentine's Day as a day of romance didn't start until the 14th century

For the last question Pilot asked “What did you get for Valentine’s Day?” The responses that came with this question were really sweet It also aligned with what the responders chose with the first and second question that was asked. Most people got what they wanted. The “Typical Valentine’s Day” gift isn’t bad. It is what people want, which is what most gift givers are aiming for.

The responses consisted of:

Chocolate Candy/Food

Flowers

Letters

Teddy Bears

Drinks

Customized materials

To those people who didn’t get their preferred gift for Valentine’s Day, remember that it is not the gift, but the thought that counts

Thank you to the 166 students that participated in the poll!

An Opportunity for Student Voice

after school and/or to have a parent at home after school Further, many teens have to help support the family by working and taking care of their siblings. This does not leave much time to live what many of us would consider to be a “normal” teenage high school life.

Covid has also had a great impact on their lives. Three years later, many students are still recovering and trying to return to “normal.”

Students from Beloit High School had an opportunity to present a proposal to President Mark Murphy of the Green Bay Packers They were able to voice some of their concerns as well as offer some possible solutions One of the statements made by a student at the Bridge and Build meeting was, "My family does not have enough money for me to play sports!” This issue was highlighted by teens from Beloit High School. Some kids are not able to play youth sports because they can not afford it. This was just one concern that was raised at the meeting. Students also focused on how safety affects youths and the high school experience It was a unique learning experience that some students from Wisco were privileged to attend

On November 21, 2022, President Fisher, Noah Ortel, and Zachary Tipton participated in the Youth Voice Project held at Lambeau Field They met with teens from other schools, representatives from local businesses, and Mark Murphy, President of the Green Bay Packers, to discuss how to bring about change within communities by investing money into youth programs in areas that are struggling.

The student presenters were from Beloit High School. They said that

Beloit, is not only one of the poorest places in Wisconsin, it is also considered to be one of the most dangerous places to live in the state They talked about how drugs affect many youths in the city; Beloit’s death -to- drug rate is 6% higher than the national average

In addition, a majority of the Beloit parents are working multiple jobs just so that families can survive Therefore, children often have less opportunity to be nurtured by a caring and loving figure who is there for them. This can cause individuals to be left with a lot of uncertainty in their day-to-day lives. This also affects their academics and co-curricular experiences because it is difficult to rely on someone to get a ride home

For financial reasons, some students had to drop out of school and get jobs leaving them unable to play sports and finish high school Graduating from high school is a significant step in order to start a career Not receiving a high school diploma can limit the opportunities one will have

The Beloit team’s “pitch” included how they wanted to raise money for youth sports through a partnership with the Packers and the Brewers Ultimately, their goal was to make youth sports affordable in their area, and hopefully grow the foundation to help other areas as well. The proposal was to add an extra nickel to each ticket sold for all games, which could end up generating $110,000 for the foundation. Another important note was that Microsoft would match the profits. This would double the amount (potentially generate a total of $220,000) These profits would not only go to dropping the price for youth sports, but also to help improve the safety in and around Beloit The profits would help remodel buildings and create a safer area for the youth and the community around them This could lead to better opportunities for teens

WINTER ACTIVITY POLL

This winter the student body was asked to vote on their favorite winter activity. There was a definite split between all activities, but two managed to come out on top. With 26.3 percent, the top response was celebrating the holidays This generalization could be specified by naming Christmas, New Year's celebrations, and Valentine’s Day as some of the holidays that happen over the course of winter. Moving on, the second top response was staying inside where it’s warm. Even after a fun day out and about, it will always be nice to cozy up inside away from the chill of the cold. Thank you to everyone who voted in this poll.

An Opportunity for Student Voice

Teen Group Article 2

(continued from page 10)

This presentation was very informative and eye opening for us because we learned first hand how an idea and partnerships can lead to making a powerful difference in the lives of others. It also demonstrated that although teenagers are young, we can have a voice and make meaningful change in many different ways. We just need to be willing to use our voice - even when we think others might not value it because it will still reach a crowd and can make a difference. No matter how young or old you are, you can always help serve, solve a problem, and give back to others. This is a great way to impact others and a community. It does not matter what your background is because we all have our own stories, and just sharing that with

others can make an impact. Many of us are very fortunate, and we often take that for granted. As followers of Jesus, we are called to do what we can to help those around us. Even the smallest things can go a long way. Many shy away from service opportunities because they do not think they can make an impact. Anyone can do something to make a difference, but few are courageous enough to stand and dig in and do the work. This experience showed us how we can help others, and that anyone is capable, especially youth voices. At the end of the day we are all precious and loved by God, no matter what our appearance or our background is, so we need to do what is right and stand up to make a difference.
