The “atmosphere” inside a building, however, is not a study of its nitrogen-oxygen mix. The way a building feels, the tone that is pervasive, its practices and the way they are carried out all combine to give that place a culture. Often one can sense the culture of a building upon entry. Pay attention the next time you enter a new place of business to the way that place “feels” or makes you feel. In part you are experiencing the culture of that building. The critical question is not “Does this place have a culture?” Every place does–from hospitals, to office suites, to stores, to churches, to schools. More critical: “Is that culture produced and maintained on purpose?” Décor, color, and cleanliness stamp a building’s culture, but the most important purveyors are its people. Those who call that building theirs ultimately decide whether they want to own and shape the culture or leave it to chance. We at Wisconsin Lutheran High School recognize that this ministry to high school youth and their families is a trust from God. “Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful” (II Corinthians 4:2, NIV). That we must be careful stewards of this trust is not only required of us, it is also the only appropriate response to the One who has earned our salvation and gives us everything else. Leaving the culture of our building to chance is inappropriate and negligent. For the past several months, members of our staff have spent considerable time and careful thought in defining the kind of culture we believe is appropriate at WLHS. At the center of that culture are seven guiding principles or indicators:

1 Christ comes first in all we do. The Word of God is treasured and obeyed. We are united in Christ. Christian leadership is expected. Students and teachers are responsible and pursue their full potential.
6 Students and families see school as a blessing. l
l 7 Respect is expected. During the first week of school, these principles were put in front of our students in a special presentation. All of them appear on posters in our classrooms and hallways as well. The challenge, of course, is to make these cultural indicators leap off the wall and into our practices and relationships so that they define our culture. Parents, we will be grateful for your help. During the summer you received a booklet that expands these principles a bit more and provides Scriptural support for each one. We ask that you give this a review periodically, talk to your sons and daughters about these principles, and perhaps incorporate them into your family devotions. If you need another Parent/Family Guide, please ask at our central office. In future newsletters, we will reflect more specifically on these principles as well. May God bless all of our efforts to define and maintain a Christ-centered school culture. Finally, to do so is an act of worship and thanks to the God who loved us first. Phil Leyrer, principal

Homecoming 2015 HOMECOMING DANCE Saturday, October 3 7:00–11:00 P.M. in Wisconsin Lutheran High School Gymnasium The theme for this year’s Homecoming Dance is “Glowing Galaxies.”
• Dances must be chaperoned by faculty and administration with parental help.
All students will need to have a means of transportation from school promptly at the end of the dance. Curfew is 11:00 P.M. in Milwaukee County, so it is important that our students not be allowed to walk home or take the bus after the dance.
• Students are expected to conduct themselves and dress in such a way that they reflect the will and love of their Lord.
• Dance cost: $10.00 per person includes refreshments. • •
Attire: Semi-formal (NO JEANS!!) Young men wear ties or sweaters and young women wear dresses or dress pants. Guests: Due to limited space, only seniors are allowed to invite guest dates from other schools. A senior girl may bring her boyfriend and a senior boy may bring his girlfriend. They may not bring in guest dates for others.
WLHS seeks to conduct dances that will provide for the social development of its students in accordance with the Word of God. To help young Christians develop norms of behavior that are consistent with God’s ways, the following guidelines have been developed.

• Only seniors may bring guests. All guests must be registered and must be limited to one guest per person. • WLHS seniors are responsible for the conduct of their guests. • Students will not be admitted to the dance any later than 8:30 P.M. • Once a student leaves the building, he or she may not re-enter. If students must go to their cars, a chaperone must accompany them. • No alcohol or any other illegal substance is allowed on the premises. School smoking rules apply. • I.D. cards and tickets must be presented to gain entrance to the dance. • Students must have a way home promptly at 11:00 P.M.

Guidance Department Information
SENIORS JUNIORS The guidance counselors met with juniors in September in small groups to preview their senior year and discuss post-high school plans. Information was shared about college entrance exams and requirements, four-year college vs. technical college, and senior year academics. The PSAT test will be written on Wednesday, October 14, during periods 1–4. This is a voluntary test taken by juniors that are four-year college bound. This test gives them experience in writing college entrance exams and establishes eligibility for National Merit Scholarships. Registration for the test will be in the Guidance Office October 1–12. There is a $14 fee required at the time of registration. Again, this is a voluntary test and is not required of juniors. Juniors will receive information reminding them to sign up as the test date approaches.
FRESHMEN During the last week of September the freshmen were introduced to the Guidance Office and its services through a presentation given by the guidance counselors. Scheduling, academic requirements, career planning, and personal counseling were some of the guidance services shared with the freshmen.
The Guidance Team Leaders have begun their senior interviews to assist seniors with post-high school plans. The Guidance Office has many resources available to seniors. Seniors planning on post-high school education are being encouraged to get their applications in early. The counselors are available during the school day to assist seniors with the application process if questions arise. Scholarships that come to our office are being posted at our school’s website www.wlhs.org. Other websites for scholarship searches are also listed at our website. ACT INFORMATION Parents can keep informed about ACT resources, test dates, and other helpful information by going to the website for parents at www.actparent.org. There is also a website for students at www.actstudent.org. Upcoming ACT test dates are:
