In his “Parable of the Bags of Gold” (earlier translations use “Talents”), Jesus confronts a topic we at times would just as soon avoid: expectations. Prior to leaving on a journey, a man of means calls three servants to himself. He hands them varying amounts of money and sets the expectation that each servant should make his amount grow. Upon return the master learns that the first two servants doubled the money they were given; however, the third, motivated by fear, buried his amount to avoid losing it, a choice that predictably gained nothing. See Matthew 25:14-30. Typically, Jesus’ parables have a central point. One way to state this one’s: God is the source of all our blessings, and he expects us to manage them productively as we are able. A closer look at a few places in the parable is instructive. In the first verse (14), the word “entrusted” characterizes the transfer of wealth from the master/owner to his servants. The gold is his. The servants are given the opportunity to use it by a generous act of his free will. The amounts vary according to a clear rationale– “each according to his ability” (15). The wise master recognizes individual differences which prompt an unequal dispensing. Ponder the love and sensitivity in this choice. Verses 21 and 23 are identical, “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!” Though the first
as l o . o h c sing s . . . bles a servant earned more than the second, the praise they receive is equal, for the master is pleased more with the faithful management than the result. The last servant did not lose any of the original trust, yet the master’s criticism is sharp, “wicked,” “lazy,” “worthless.” This servant took it upon himself to change the expectation that was not his to change, and for a selfish reason besides–fear. This choice honored neither the trust nor the Giver. WLHS is a trust from God. As a staff we pray regularly that God would help us see it as just that. For how does a school-based ministry operate for over 110 years in facilities that have steadily improved apart from our Lord’s favor and desire? More important, in that time God entrusted the Christian education of over 13,000 graduates to our care, many of whom are now with him in heaven. Today the spiritual lives of our multicultural student body range from those whose life-long baptismal faith is being nurtured to those who meet Jesus for the first time at WISCO. To honor the God of our salvation and the God who allows us to carry on his work, we must strive to grow as professionals who attend courses, seminars, and conferences that sharpen and expand our knowledge and skills. And in our students we will seek to instill an attitude of gratitude. WLHS is not a building where they go to school but a blessing from God, his house, to be respected in the way we conduct ourselves. Their teachers are not just knowledge and grade givers, but God’s representatives to help them grow academically and spiritually toward a productive life. Their studies are not just a means to an end but a chance to apply their gifts faithfully and in so doing worship their God. The students alongside whom they study, play, sing, act, and compete are not just names in a yearbook, but souls for whom Christ died and fellow Christians whom we can serve. May God help us see WLHS as the blessing and trust that it is, and may his love motivate us to make it the best it can be. “Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful” (I Corinthians 4:2).

Student Body Officers
After ten years of faithful service to the WLHS mission, Ms. April Tellier has reached the prayerful decision to resign effective the end of May. We are grateful for the thorough way April carried out her duties and for the many students who have benefitted from her teaching, mentoring and other forms of service. Those who worked most closely with her in the FACE department will testify to the numerous tasks she performed without asking and the details she attended to that made the work of others easier. April’s future plans are indefinite; however, we hope they will include visits to WLHS.
Student body elections were held in May. Officers elected for the 2016-2017 school year are as follows:
nt Preside kenson a a H h eld) Hanna Brookfi rd,
the Lo (Christ
Vice-Pr esident An (Good S na Grepo heph
We will also say so long (but not good bye) to Mr. Josh Lindner who will return to the other side of the desk next year at Martin Luther College. Mr. Lindner interrupted his studies to serve us as an emergency instructor in English, religion, and coaching this year when we were blessed with an increase in enrollment. He placed our need ahead of his own, and we are grateful for not just that choice but also the competent, cheerful way he carried out his work this year.

WLHS Teachers Honored Civic Music is an organization that has supported young musicians in the greater Milwaukee area and honored their teachers for more than 97 years through coaching, scholarships, performances and award programs. Since 1991, Civic Music has presented its music educator recognition program. We are grateful and appropriately proud to announce that two of our own received awards in May. Karen Lippert received a certificate of excellence for instrumental music and Ned Goede was named Educational Administrator of the Year. For us who know Mrs. Lippert and Mr. Goede, and see their faithful service year in and year out, we are not surprised. We are nonetheless grateful to see others acknowledging these worthy servants. Congratulations to them. To God is the glory.

Spring Athletic Season Summary TRACK–Boys
TRACK–Girls
The boys placed second in all three Wisconsin Little Ten events this year – the indoor conference meet, the conference relay meet, and the outdoor conference meet. But they saved their best effort for the seasonending WIAA championship series by winning the regional and sectional crowns, before going on to place second at the Division 2 State Championship in LaCrosse.
The girls won the Wisconsin Little Ten indoor conference meet, then placed second in both the relay conference meet and the outdoor conference meet. The ladies won the WIAA regional and WIAA sectional meets. They went on to win second place at the WIAA State meet, in LaCrosse. This was the team’s first trophy earned at the state meet.
Bryce Roberts placed second in the shot put and fifth in the discus; David Lembke placed second in the high jump; Nicholas Jacobs placed second in the pole vault to lead the Vikings.
BASEBALL The varsity baseball team placed ninth in the Little Ten Conference race. The boys finished the season with an 8-18 record. The Vikings defeated St. Thomas More in the first round of the regional, but were eliminated by Milwaukee Lutheran in the regional semi-final.
GOLF The golf program grew in numbers this spring and that is promising for the future. The program played an incomplete varsity team this year during the conference schedule, as they worked on developing individuals for the future.
Junior Audrey Janik won the state championship in the 1600 meter run, placed second in the 800 meter run, and third in the 3200 meter run. Audrey shattered WLHS school records in all three races. Sophomore Hailey Orlowski won the state championship in pole vault.
GIRLS SOCCER The girls finished the season in eighth place in the Little Ten Conference.
SOFTBALL The softball team finished the conference season in sixth place with an overall record of 8-14. The girls defeated Shorewood in the first round of the WIAA tournament, but fell to Eisenhower in the regional semi-final.
Conference Realignment The WIAA Board of Control approved a conference realignment proposal for southeast Wisconsin that will take effect at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year. The proposed change would put us in the Woodland Conference which consists of the following schools: Brown Deer, Cudahy, Greendale, Greenfield, Milwaukee Lutheran , New Berlin Eisenhower, New Berlin West , Pewaukee, Pius XI, Shorewood , South Milwaukee, West Allis Central, Whitnall , and Wisconsin Lutheran .
