Back to School

Making the jump from a carefree vacation to stressful school. By Leah Rausch

Some people love school. Some people hate school. If you're like me, you hate going back, but love to learn. When you get back to school, a teacher may ask you, “Do you remember this from last year?”, and you don’t, so then the teacher has to teach it all over again. You could, though, be one of those people who absorbed everything and is able to still retain it despite the time off. Scientist Daniel Willingham asks this question, “What makes something stick in memory, and what is likely to slip away? How can the memory system know what it’ll need to remember later?” One of the reasons students may forget things that were learned in school last year is because they crammed it into their heads for a quiz

or test. They may remember it for a day of two, but it will soon be forgotten. It is also true that people can spend years learning something like Spanish, not speak it for a while, and it can be remembered easily again once they get back into it. Scientists have found that memory is associated with senses. For instance, if someone had really great food at a fun 4th of July parade, the next time he smells or eats that food, he is probably going to think of that fun parade. Sight (visual) can also help people remember things better. If a teacher shows a picture of something, and talks about it, students are more likely to remember it. Other people remember things best when they just hear or touch something. Additionally, it is hard to get

back into doing homework. During the summer, we are so used to just chilling or doing fun things. Thus, when school comes around, it is hard to find the motivation to do homework. A negative way to get motivated is to think of the consequences for not completing and assignment like getting a bad grade. A more positive way, though, is to do simple brain exercises and games such as Sudoku and crossword puzzles. These work the mind so that it doesn’t completely go into hibernation mode over the vacations. Waking itself up again becomes easier once school time rolls around again. Going back to school can indeed be fun when a person gets to see friends again and play sports. May it also be said too of learning and doing schoolwork.

Sharpening your mental skills In addition to word games like Sudoku and crossword puzzles, Dr. Morley recommends the following ways to sharpen your mental skills: (The list below comes from an Online article -- http://www.everydayhealth. com/longevity/mental-fitness/brain-exercises-for-memory.aspx 1. Test your recall. Make a list — of grocery items, things to do, or anything else that comes to mind — and memorize it. An hour or so later, see how many items you can recall. 2. Let the music play. Learn to play a musical instrument or

join a choir. Studies show that learning something new and complex over a longer period of time is good for the mind. 3. Do math in your head. Figure out problems without the aid of pencil, paper, or computer; you can make this more difficult — and athletic — by walking at the same time. 4. Take a cooking class. Learn how to cook a new cuisine. Cooking uses a number of senses: smell, touch, sight, and taste, which all involve different parts of the brain. 5. Learn a foreign language. The listening and hearing involved stimulates the brain. What’s more, a rich vocabulary has been linked to a reduced risk for cognitive decline.

6. Create word pictures. Visualize the spelling of a word in your head, then try and think of any other words that begin/end with the same two letters. 7. Draw a map from memory. After returning home from visiting a new place, try to draw a map of the area. 8. Challenge your taste buds. When eating, try to identify individual ingredients in your meal, including subtle herbs and spices. 9. Refine your hand-eye abilities. Take up a new hobby that involves fine-motor skills, such as knitting, drawing, painting, assembling a puzzle, etc. 10. Learn a new sport. Start doing an athletic exercise that utilizes both mind and body, such as yoga, golf, or tennis.

A Day in the Life of a Wisco Football Player Making the touchdown for starting up a new school year as a Wisco athlete. By Camillia Washington

Everyone knows that football is a tough contact sport, but have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes? Joel Brown, a JV football player for Wisco, describes the struggles and progressions in the game of football. The practices are tough. They spend twenty plus hours a week practicing, and some players end up sitting on the bench, which can be disappointing. The coach spends time running drills and making sure the players know what he wants them to do. “It’s all worth it in the end because we continue to get better,” Brown said. The team makes sure they follow the right procedures. They warm up before a game, and then work hard in the game. Before or during a game, they try to think positively to get a win: “Let’s get this W” is something they might say to encourage each other.

One of the things that the coaches instill in the players is that all glory goes to God. God blesses them with a win. The most important thing they do when they win is to thank God first for everything. Some may think that the team has a celebration or a party after a win, but many of the games are played on a school night, so they typically just go home. When they lose, the coach gets them into a huddle and explains what the players did wrong. Then, the next day the team watches video of the game. The coach points out their mistakes and explains to the team how to avoid mistakes for the next game. Everyone agrees that losing is difficult, because “We worked hard day in and day out, twenty plus hours a week, just to fail. Was it all worth it?” Asks the athlete. Although being part of a team

requires a lot of hard work, there are many positive things about being an athlete. Yes, there might be late nights and sore days, but there are many great experiences. There are new people to meet and making new friends. The members of the team become close and often create brotherly bonds. Also, the names of athletes are known throughout school, and it feels good to be recognized. Sometimes they also get to leave school a little bit earlier for a game. Finally, they are representing our Lord and school. The athletes have the opportunity to show how Christians are different from everyone else. In showing respect to the other team and coaches, good sportsmanship is demonstrated and passed along.

Top 3 Presidents In US History Ever wonder who the best and worst presidents were? By Delilah Trempala

The best of the best--from athletes like Michael Jordan to stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, people have rated everything on how great it has become. The 2016 elections are quickly approaching, which means it is a good time to reflect on who were some of the best and worst presidents in history according to www.SoCawlege.

Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln is largely considered to be the best president to serve this country. He was the leader of a country that was in the midst of a Civil War. His most notable speech while in office was the Gettysburg Address, which was given at the dedication ceremony of the National Cemetery of Gettysburg. This speech honors the sacrifices of those who died in the battlefield at Gettysburg. These men died fighting to “preserve the principles of human equality and self-government as set forth in the Declaration of Independence” (history.com)

George Washington

Next in line is George Washington. As our first president, he helped America become a nation, even though he had fought on the side of Britain for many years. He was the only president to fight in battle while holding the position of president and, coincidentally, he lost more battles than he won. He never wanted the political party system (Republicans and Democrats) that we have today. He also believed strongly in freedom of speech. He said if that is taken away then “dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.”

Thomas Jefferson

The writer of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson is ranked the third best president in the country. He once said, “Do you want to know who you are? Don’t ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you.” He believed strongly in the Constitution. Besides his political accomplishments, Jefferson was also a great architect and designed his home (Monticello), as well as The Rotunda, at the University of Virginia, and several other buildings.

Warren G. Harding

One of the worst presidents was reportedly Warren G. Harding, the 29th president who said that he could “return [America] to normalcy.” He is quoted as saying, “I am not fit for this office, and should never have been here.” Jay Tolson, a senior writer at U.S. News & World Report, stated that he was known as a womanizer, and “he was so reassuringly vague in his campaign declarations that he was understood to support both the foes and the backers of U.S. entry into the League of Nations, the hottest issue of the day.” He spent much of his time playing golf and poker and eventually stress caused him to have a stroke and die while still in office.

the Czech Republic, once said, “Nixon’s failings were the stuff of dark tragedy. . . for obstructing the investigation of a petty crime committed by some of his own campaign operatives—an attempt to burglarize the Democratic National Headquarters—Nixon’s name and reputation will forever be linked with one word: Watergate.” The Watergate tapes consisted of the Nixon Administration illegally recording people that they were suspicious of. He once said, “Always remember that others may hate you, but those who hate you won’t win unless you hate them. And, then you destroy yourself.” The Watergate tapes ruined his presidency. He resigned shortly before he was about to be impeached.

James Buchanan

James Buchanan is regarded by many historians as one of the worst presidents of all time. In his inaugural address, Buchanan called the territorial issue of slavery “a matter of little practical importance.” Within three months after his election, seven states had left the Union. He said “It is beyond the power of any president. . . to restore peace and harmony among the states.” Buchanan did very little about the crisis and part of his Cabinet resigned. On the day of Lincoln’s inauguration, he told him, “If you are as happy entering the presidency as I am leaving it, then Richard Nixon Richard Nixon, the 37th pres- you are a very happy man.” Buchanan had other issues during his presidency, ident, is said to also be one of including an obsession with Cuba and a the worst presidents in controversy involving a war with MorAmerica’s history, though mon settlers in the Utah territory. he said to the public that he “was not a crook.” Jay Tolson, a news director in

Pokemon-go . . .again An old favorite returns to the gaming industry--this time to the virtual world. By Reece Elton

It took an overnight uproar 20 years to finally become what it is today. When Satoshi Tajiri produced the designs of the first Pokemon, he probably never thought his idea would expand to the literal idea of going out and catching em’ all. As Pokemon games have been released throughout the years, they have been improved upon time after time. However, the new game called Pokemon Go was released in July of 2016 and has taken the world by storm. For those who don’t know, Pokemon Go is a mobile game that exploded on the App Store and Play Store during the summer of 2016. Across the United States, more than 15 million people downloaded the app. Before, Pokemon was exclusive to only Nintendo consoles, but now Nintendo has taken advantage of so many people using mobile devices. The idea and result of this game has never really been seen before, that is

turning a praised console game into an extremely popular mobile game. They created a very impressive game that can be played on almost any type of mobile device. Pokemon as a franchise has been very successful, and now the game has gained popularity because so many people including non gamers are also playing it. It is an augmented reality game, which mixes both a virtual element with real world elements. So, various Pokemon characters are mixed in with your phone’s GPS location, landmarks to use as a background when catching Pokemon. Pokemon has not been this popular since 2009. Many people started playing the game because their friends started first. Other people wanted to play because they desired the feeling of going on a journey and catching all of the Pokemon that they possibly could. The company Niantic is still working on new features for the game such as the classic feature of trading Pokemon and battling with other people which, will probably make people like the game even more. However, the Pokemon Go community will just have to wait and see what will become of this worldwide phenomenon. Some people who played Pokemon Go have experienced problems because they were not aware of their surroundings. This made some players more vulnerable and susceptible to being mugged in a dark alley. For example, according to Forbes, a man was ambushed by attackers

in Schweitzer Park in Anaheim, CA and stabbed multiple times in the torso. Nobody really led the man to the place where he was stabbed, but it seems he was distracted while playing the game. So, some people taking these adventurous walks endanger themselves because they are not alert. Some people have gotten their homes turned into Pokemon gyms and Poke Stops which means that people playing Pokemon Go will trespass on private property just to catch a Pokemon. Many residents are very angry about this and have filed lawsuits against the creators of Pokemon Go. But the game has positives too. It is getting people out of their video game chair and walking around outside, seeing things they might not have seen, and socializing with friends while playing the game together. A survey was taken at Wisco concerning various topics surrounding the game. 72 people answered to this survey and there were some very interesting results. Out of these 72 individuals, 41 said they never played the game during the summer of 2016 and the other 31 said they did. Currently, 54 are not playing and 18 out of the 31 that played during the summer are still playing. For average hours a week of play time during the summer, it was approximately 6.5 hours for those who played. For people currently still playing the game, the average

is 1.8 hours. This drop in amount of hours playing is very understandable considering school work and other extracurricular activities going on. Before you can visit a “gym” and battle with your Pokemon, you have to choose one of three teams-Instinct, Valor, and Mystic. Out of the 31 people that completed this survey and that played the game, 1 person joined Instinct, 14 joined Mystic, 11 joined Valor, and 5 either didn’t know or they didn’t get far enough in the game to join a team at all. According to the Adobe Digital Index, Team Mystic leads the three teams in Pokemon Go with having 43% of all players joined, followed by Team Valor with 32%, and Team Instinct trailing with 25%. It’s easy to see that the data collected from

Wisco is relatively similar to that of the overall percentages of players from around the world. Although Pokemon Go seemed like an amazing game from the start, many people over time have started to lose interest in the game. The game has some problems such as players not being able to sign in because of all the server activity or things like not being able to catch a pokemon because of the game freezing up unexpectedly. Niantic also has yet to improve players´ ability to find Pokemon easier; as of now, the game only shows a patch of grass behind a Pokemon when it’s near in the tracking menu which makes it difficult to really find the exact location of a Pokemon. At Wisco, the amount of peo-

ple who said the game would die out and the people who said the game would maintain itself were very split and even. 27 people answered to this and out of those 27, 14 said the game would be able to stick around and the other 13 said the game’s success would decline. At the end of the day, Pokemon Go was definitely a huge success at first, but the amount of users has drastically decreased over a 4 month period. All opinions aside, there is definitely no denying that this game caused millions of people, gamers and non gamers alike, to step out of their homes, make new friends, and to experience the feeling of being immersed in the world of Pokemon. Fabulous Fall Fashion Ever wonder what to wear as the seasons start to change and become much more frigid? By Nadia Zuniga

The leaves are changing colors and falling off the trees. The winds are a bit stronger than earlier in the year. This can only mean one thing-Autumn! Autumn has finally come, along with so many other things like Halloween, carving pumpkins, raking leaves, and Thanksgiving. As the temperatures slowly drop, there’s also unique styles of clothing to wear. But what styles and colors are in this year? With the arrival of Fall, we go from tank tops and shorts to warm scarves, and fuzzy jackets. As teenagers, we tend to worry about how

our clothes look, no matter what weather it may be. As cold weather approaches, we must show off our style for this fall. When there’s warm weather, which is normally in the beginning of Autumn, there’s nothing wrong with a simple T-shirt, some jeans, and boots, but for the girls who want to stay current with fashion trends, try a cute casual dress with a matching purse! If it is a bit cold for that, try a knit scarf and a dark jacket. Other important accessories are purses and cute-looking scarves, along with a pair of sunglasses for those sunny days. Despite what the trends say, however, it is important to be you and stay in your budget. Plus while Seventeen (see below) says

According to Seventeen Magazine, here are 8 ways fashion has changed in the last year:

that ankle boots were last year, other sites would say the opposite. According to familyeducation.com, jogger pants and puffer vests are still in. So are peasant tops. According to the Herald Dispatch out of West Virginia, “Coming soon to schools everywhere are the turtlenecks of the ‘90s, the embroidered jeans of the ‘70s and - taking it way, way back - the Victorian fashions of the 1800s. ” Fashion writer, Kirsty Gungor of “Lovelies in my Life” (from Green Bay, Wisconsin) also blogged recently about 90s fashion making a comeback. Where you shop is also a personal choice. Whether it is Target or Rue 21 or somewhere else, happy shopping!
