Uniting after Terrorism A serious of devastating attacks leaves people in a panic, bringing the world together.

Even though the world is made up of many separate countries, those nations come together when one of them is affected by a terrorist attack. When a country is working to rebuild and restore, the rest of the world has shown unending support and sympathy. After the attacks of 9/11 and more recently the attacks on Paris in November, the world has united, sending prayers and other assistance to those who need it.

After 9/11, Americans were fearful and unsure of the future.

Thousands of people lost their lives, and the news of the attacks spread fear and questions among the American people. As other countries began

to become aware of what happened, they were sympathetic and did all they could to support the U.S. For instance, notes, flowers, and candles were placed outside of U.S. embassies around the world. Flags were flown at half staff, and moments of silence took place throughout the world.

World leaders such as the presidents of Israel and Palestine condemned the terrorist actions by making a point of donating blood. Belgian people held hands and prayed outside of their World Trade Center, and strangers gathered to pray together on beaches in Indonesia. Leaders sent letters of sympathy and offered resources and support to the White House. Support

for the United States was unending; American flags were flown in many different countries, and the national anthem was played as well.

As America struggled through hard times, the world united. A common theme was prevalent at this time; signs stated “This is an attack on all of us,” and the well known French newspaper, Le Monde showed support by saying “We are all Americans.”

Similar to the ways that America was supported through the times following 9/11, the world has united with Paris as the city goes through a dark time. Taxi drivers helped by turning off their meters and not charging for rides around town.

When panic spread about whether or not friends and family members were safe, social media sites like Facebook tried to make it easier to contact people. Facebook initiated “Safety Check,” which allowed people to search for loved ones to see if they were safe. It also allowed people in France to check in, saying that they were secure so that people looking for them could be reassured. Google, Sprint, and Verizon had very similar ideas; they made international calls to France free, so that contact with family members could be made without worrying about the cost.

When the lights of the Eiffel tower were turned off after the

attacks, the rest of the world lit up.

Over 30 famous monuments around the world were brightly lit with the colors of France, including the Tokyo Tower, Christ The Redeemer Statue, Sydney’s Opera House, and many more. Outpourings of love and support for Parisians flooded social media.

The hashtag #PrayforParis quickly became a trending topic, along with a peace sign made of the Eiffel Tower. The hashtags #PorteOuverte (meaning “open doors”) and #StrandedinUS came about, being posted by people in both France and America who were willing to

open their homes to people unable to get home due to flight cancellations and increased security.

When terrorists attack, people suffer, but through social media, loving people, and supportive governments, the world unites to support those who are in need. As powerful as terrorists may be, they will never be able to take away the love and support that people have for one another. As the world continues to be affected by groups of people that want to destroy nations, people from everywhere will continue to face them, together.

Cancer Cure

If conspiracy theorists are to be believed, the cure for cancer may be closer than people think.

“For the loved ones we’ve all lost, for the family we can still save, let’s make America the country that cures cancer once and for all,” announced president Barack Obama at his final State of the Union Address on January 12, 2016. Imagine the public’s reaction to finding out the cure for cancer that we all have been waiting anxiously for has already been found.

People’s initial joy could turn into wondering thoughts and then possibly anger. Perhaps even some would have suspicions of conspiracy. Some conspiracy theorists believe that a cure has already been found, and they believe that the reason behind hiding the cure has to do with the economy.

Many have fought for their lives ever since cancer was first discovered in 1600 B.C. According to the National Cancer Institute, about 39.6 percent of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives. However, the rates for cancer diagnosis used to be higher. In 1975 over 50 percent of adults were diagnosed with cancer. However, since 1991, cancer rates have decreased 20 percent.

Cancer takes on many different forms. For example, Carcinoma is a type of cancer that begins in the skin or in the tissues that cover internal organs. Sarcoma is another form of cancer that begins in bone, cartilage,

fat, muscle, blood vessels, or other connective tissue. Leukemia is one that starts in blood-forming tissue such as the bone marrow and causes large numbers of abnormal blood cells to be produced and enter the blood. There is also lymphoma and melanoma cancers that begin in the cells of the immune system. Even cancers in the tissues of the brain and spinal cord can occur and are called central nervous system cancers. In the United States, the top 3 deadliest types of cancer are lung cancer, colon cancer and breast cancer. The most commonly diagnosed type of cancer is breast cancer with more than 234,000 new cases expected in 2015.

With all of the advances in medical technology that the U.S. is exposed to, many conspiracy theories have developed saying that there is already a cure for cancer.

(However, you can find plenty of sources to explain why this is a false theory.) Some say that the cure has already been discovered by other countries. They believe the American government chooses to keep the cure hidden because if there was a cure for cancer, then businesses that are part of cancer treatment (like pharmaceutical companies), would lose a lot of revenue. Devvy Kidd, founder and director of the Project on Winning Economic Reform, estimated that in 2011, Ameri-

cans spent $23 billion for cancer drugs.

He goes on to suggest that “when you stop and think about it, those massive amounts of money, the number of jobs held in the cancer industry - because that’s what it has become - is a huge amount of fuel driving our economy.” In addition, it has been said that researchers discovered that Malaria protein armed with toxin can kill cancer cells. Mads Daugaard, a cancer researcher at Canada’s University of British Columbia states that “by conducting tests on mice, we have been able to show that the combination of protein and toxin kill the cancer cells.” Whether these theories are true or made up is for the discerning reader to decide and will hopefully be uncovered by future generations.

Though the conspiracy theories bring up debates about cancer, David Gorski, an American surgical oncologist, says, “We have made steady progress, and many people with cancer can now be cured, but we have not discovered the one cure for all cancer. I personally am not convinced that we will discover a single cure for all cancer, at least not with any extrapolation of current technology. But if we continue to make progress as we are, cancer will become an increasingly treatable and even curable type of disease.”

So until we have a cure for cancer, pray that more will live healthy lives and that God will guide them and their families through whatever troubles lie ahead.

Junk Foods

Unhealthy eating habits can lead to health problems.

Fortunately, there are healthier alternatives.

Eating healthy probably is not high on a teenager’s priority list when there are things like deadlines, social lives, and grades, but it is an important part of life nonetheless. Junk food is something teenagers eat regularly due to its easy accessibility. Even though the youth of today loves per-packaged food, most kids are not thinking about what is really in all the food that they eat.

According to the American Heart Association, “American teens are consuming a whopping 28 teaspoons of added sugar daily.” Added sugar is the term used for when a manufacturer adds in extra sugar not naturally found in the product. Sugar intake can affect cholesterol, as well as numerous other things, which can lead to premature heart attacks and strokes. Not only the sugar, but the fat in unhealthy snacks is the leading cause of heart disease and high blood pressure in the younger generation. The question is, what should people try and stay away from when it comes to junk food?

Before giving money to a vending machine, think about what is really in those snacks. These are the top 10 junk foods to cut out or substitute to better one’s health.

Potato Chips

Potato chips are the most common of all junk food snacks, and at one time or another people have most likely consumed them. This type of snack comes in so many varieties; it has become a real “go to.” Alternatives to these chips are natural baked chips or even whole grain pretzels for when a salty snack is needed.

People often believe that eating tortilla chips may seem healthier, but the truth is they are still fried. A good way to avoid the fried part but still enjoy tortilla chips is to make them at home. Buy some whole wheat tortillas, preheat the oven to 350 degrees, cut the bread into chips, and bake for 10-15 minutes.

Corn based chips

Corn based snacks such as Fritos and Cheetos, are what most people consider chips, but these are much different and still unhealthy. Besides the baked chips, try breading and baking vegetables, then adding a low fat cheese powder over the top. The Internet has tons of recipes for homemade chips that taste just as good, and are healthier.

Candy

Hard candies are a real temptation in school when kids are not allowed to eat food in class but still crave sweet stuff. Jolly Ranchers offer a sugar free option that is easy to find. Also, many health food stores sell healthy lemon drops and chocolate covered fruits and nuts.

Baked goods

Baked goods are delicious, and people often tend to eat more of them then they should. Homemade cookies often contain a lot of sugar. One way to make them healthier is by using whole grain four instead of white flour when baking. Also, try making oatmeal cookies which are lower in sugar and can still give some relief for a sweet tooth.

Snack Cakes

Snack Cakes like Twinkies are many kids’ downfall, since they look cute and come in what seems to be personal servings, but they are not healthy.

Instead, try making personal oatmeal cream pies for a small cake-like snack.

Another thing to try is to substitute vegan cream cheese to the frosting and substituting gluten free flour to the cookie batter.

Chocolate

Chocolate is another food that can be made healthier. While you may like the taste of milk chocolate, dark chocolate is actually recommended as the better choice. Adding chocolate to your daily diet can lower blood pressure.

Another key to staying healthy is to eat in moderation. Just because people want to watch what they eat, does not mean they can never eat junk food again. Small limited portions can give a person the ability to keep those craving away. However, try regularly substitute junk food with more healthy habits by finding fun recipes to make.

There are thousands of healthy food options available, so try something new. Eating healthy and having food taste good is not impossible.

What’s Next?

College is not the only option for post high school plans.

In high school a question that teenagers are asked is,“What college are you going to?” That question is often answered “I do not know yet.” Occasionally there are students who know exactly what they want to do after high school and where they want to go; however, the majority of high school students do not have a clue what the future holds. Attending college is not a requirement. Many people in society have made college seem like the only option. Of course, going to college can open many doors and give students a better education; however, there are alternatives to the traditional college route.

Enlisting in the Military When it comes to job security, promotional opportunities, and even education, the military is second to none. It is definitely a career choice that you can be proud of. In the article “5 Proud Alternatives To Going To College,” Robert Farrington says, “while the starting wages for basic enlisted personnel are pretty low, most of the basic living needs are taken care of: housing, food, clothing, and insurance.

Joining the military offers a chance to serve the country, experience many new things, and earn money toward a future college education. Also being in the military helps provide beneficial work experience in self-discipline and punctuality that can apply to civilian jobs later in life.”

Tradesman or Vocational School This is a great option especially for people who enjoy working with their hands. There are many options that lead to potentially well-paying careers: electrician, plumbing, welding, construction and more. Most people

start as an apprentice, and with a lot of hard work, you can move up through the ranks and earn a nice salary. A skilled tradesman could work for a large company, or even own his or her own small business in their trade.

Entrepreneurship While this may seem impractical to some, others have started companies at a young age and become very successful. Peter Thiel, an American entrepreneur who co-founded PayPal, famously challenged students not to go to college and embark on entrepreneurship instead. Many famous entrepreneurs such as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs do not have a college degree.

People who have ideas about starting companies or inventing products are often told to try their ideas out before going to college. It is easier for young people to take financial risks than for those who have a family and larger financial obligations. Plus, the education you can get from starting a business is priceless. In today’s society, it is easy to grow a business over the internet. Successful Instagramers, Viners, Bloggers, and Youtubers are also examples of entrepreneurs.

None of them were famous to begin with, but because they made themselves into a brand, they became popular. Young people, who have started online businesses, have millions of people following them on social media and buying

their books and merchandise. Additionally, companies often pay these people to promote their products. For them, it all started with a click.

For many teenagers, college is something they feel obligated to enroll in after high school; however, that is most certainly not the only choice.

College is not right for everyone, and no one should feel pressured to attend.

There are many ways to be successful without college. College is a great option for many people; however, for people who want an education outside of a classroom, learning from first hand experience is also a great tool to gain knowledge and success in their chosen field. Plus, if things do not go as planned, college can always be an alternative option.

Changing the World Are teens hindrances, or can they provide potential benefits for society?

A lot is expected of teenagers: get good grades, get a job, be responsible, get into a good college, etc. Some adults think that these things are all that teenagers and young adults can do.

Somehow, the world tends to overlook that teenagers are actually a powerful force.

One teenager by the name of David Zhao created a non-profit organization that lets people without access to classical, as well as other genres of music, go to concerts. This organization is called Instruments For Change.

Zhao said ,“it’s important that kids have access to music education and the benefits that come with it, including an improvement in reasoning skills.”

Megan Gambino, the author of the article, “Google Thinks These 18 Teenagers Will Change the World,” tells the story of fourteen year old, Trisha Prabhu. In 2014, Trisha wanted to find a way to help stop cyberbullying, so she created the “Rethink” alert. Every time that someone would try to post something potentially hurtful on social media, the alert would go off in order to make the person pause and think about the potential consequences. The “Rethink” alert was tested in Trisha’s hometown in Illinois with 300 middle schoolers and high schoolers, and it showed that teenagers were 93.4% less likely to post something hurtful when the alert was in place.

However, one does not need to be a great with science, math, or music to have an impact on the world; teens can also use their talents to help causes. According to the Huffington Post, after hearing about the oil spill in the

Gulf of Mexico, Olivia Bouler used her drawing skills to help raise money for the cause. Olivia gave every person who was willing to donate a drawing of a bird she had done, and she ended up raising over $200,000.

Furthermore, teens can be a great impact when they see something that needs to be changed. For example, after hearing a news story of a returning soldier from Iraq with an $8,000 cell phone bill, siblings Brittany and Robbie Bergquist started the organization called Cell Phones for Soldiers. Cell Phones for Soldiers recycles old cell phones, and all of the proceeds are used to buy international calling cards for troops stationed around the world.

Another example of a teen being inspired to help cause great change is Tamar Shaaban. In 2011, Tamer Shaaban went to Egypt, and then released a film about the beginning of the Egyptian Revolution and exposed the

frustrations of the Egyptian people.

Later, he posted the video, and it went viral on numerous social media sites such as Youtube and Facebook.

Another teen like Tamar Shaaban who used his filmmaking skills to help people is Alec Urbach.

Urbach used his film camera to help create educational cartoons for illiterate children in developing countries.

Helping the world could be as simple as getting a group of friends and cleaning a park, or raising funds to donate to a local charity. Teens have social media at the tip of our fingers that helps teens to share, show, or tell the world anything that needs to be said.

Speak out with one’s own voice, and something amazing could happen.

Traveling Safely

Another added benefit for students who walk or bike is that they get to spend time outside. Students typically spend 8 hours a day sitting in a classroom. When teens go home, they tend to stay inside spending time watching TV, playing games on the computer or spending time on other electronic devices such as phones, PlayStation, or Xbox. A survey done by the American Optometric Association reports that, “83 percent of c h i l d r e n between the ages of 10 and 17 estimate they use an electronic device for three or more hours each day.”

Of course walking and biking places saves money on gas. A gallon of gas can cost anywhere between $2.50 and $3.00 depending on the travel distance; however, biking and walking is free!

Bicyclists can feel unprotected on the road among the cars. There are several things bicyclists can do to reduce their risk of crash, death or injury. Wisconsindot.gov states, “The best way is to avoid common bicyclist errors or to be prepared to avoid common motorist errors committed around bicyclists. Every bicyclist wearing a helmet correctly (helmet sits just above the eyebrows) each time they get on a bicycle can help prevent more than 85% of head injuries when crashes do happen.” In 2013, 741 people were killed in bicycle accidents, many of them were not wearing helmets.

More than half of all bicycle crashes are simple falls caused by operator error, riding surface condition, or a distraction that causes the person to suddenly swerve.

Bikes also require maintenance which means one has to fix anything (e.g. proper tire inflation) that may be wrong with it.

Benefits of taking the bus

People get to and from school or work in various ways. Some may walk, bike, take the bus, drive, or get a ride from a parent or friend. While any one of these is a great way to get around, each one has some plus sides and downsides, and all can pose safety issues.

Benefits of walking/biking

One of the benefits of walking or biking places is that exercise is involved. People can ride bikes almost anywhere at any time, except during heavy snow in the winter. Walking can be a year round activity if one does not mind the cold. One benefit to biking is that it is not as hard on the ankles and feet like running or walking can be. Additionally, one benefit of getting more exercise is that a person can get a better night’s sleep, which could lead to a more productive day. The National Association for Sport and Physical Activity recommends 60 minutes of daily exercise; walking and biking can help people to reach that goal. Daily exercise can also help to alleviate stress. Dr. Jennifer Rupert, MD says that, “Studies show that exposure to nature and free outdoor play can reduce stress and relieve ADHD symptoms.” The article, “A Potential Natural Treatment for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Evidence From a National Study” by Frances E. Kuo and Andrea Faber Taylor agrees that exposure to nature helps ADHD symptoms,. Also, “Substantial research conducted among non-ADHD populations has shown that “symptoms” of ADHD—inattention and impulsivity—are reduced after exposure

While there are many pros to walking and biking, there are also some cons. Bicycles are considered “vehicles” on Wisconsin roadways; therefore, bicyclists must obey the rules of the road. Bicyclists should travel on streets on the right side of the right lane. In communities that have designated bike lanes, it is better to travel within this space. Remember to always go in the same

those riders had an individual car, that would be a lot more cars on the road, all adding gas emissions into the air.

In addition to helping the environment, riding the bus can help to better regulate traffic because the people on the bus are not in their own cars, which means less cars are on the road.

Taking the bus can also be a cost effective way to travel. A bus ticket does only costs $1.75 which comes along with a transfer; a transfer allows a person to get on the bus for free during the time allotted which is usually about an hour. Another plus to riding the bus is that the riders are able to relax, go on their phones, do homework, listen to music, or talk with friends.

Plus, many teenagers can be in accidents because of distractions and not much driving experience. According to Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in 2011, over 3000 teens were killed in car accidents. Many were not wearing seatbelts which is another example on why safety precautions such as wearing helmets or seatbelts should be done and taken seriously.

Downside to taking the bus

Being safe while out walking alone should be a high priority. There is always the danger of being followed.

Being aware of the surroundings while out running or walking is very important, so you should not use earbuds.

Another thing is to not wear the hood of a hoodie up while walking, because it hinders the view of people approaching from behind or on the sides. Also, it is safer to travel with someone else if go somewhere at night, and remember to always stick to sidewalks and welllit areas.

In order to see if you are being followed, there are several things you can do. Change the way that you are walking (cross the street, speed up, or slow down) to see if the suspected follower does the same. If something does not feel right after five to seven minutes, the feeling should not be ignored.

Taking the bus usually takes more time than if you drove yourself, so does tie up more of your day. Also, you need to be careful when you take the bus, as certain time of the day can be less safe than others.

Benefits of driving your own car

There are many pros and cons with driving to and from school. Driving a car gives one more privacy than the bus would. Also, people who own cars are able to get to places faster because they do not have a set route to where they are going. Their schedule can also be more flexible. If they want to get to school extra early instead of only fifteen minutes before school starts, they can do that.

You can also run toward a populated place and yell,”Fire” or “Call the police” because people will more likely to help if they hear one of those phrases instead of just “help.” Hillary Johnston, a passionate educator in public health says, “If you’re on foot, stop to look at a store window or tie your shoes, all while staying aware of your surroundings. Use that time to gather your thoughts, do a little deep breathing, and take stock of what’s happening around you.” The most important thing through the entire experience is to remain calm.

Traffic also poses a safety threat to walkers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 4743 pedestrians were killed in 2012. About seventy-three percent of the people killed were in an urban area at the time. Surprisingly most deaths were not at busy intersections, but rather at non-intersections.

So, while all of the different ways of transportation are good, they all have their downsides. Being safe while on the roads or sidewalks, whether walking, biking, or driving is something that is important and should be a high priority.
