Dedicated Leader Retires After 23 years of faithful service to Wisconsin Lutheran High School, Pastor Jim Kleist (’68) is retiring.

Kleist joined the WLHS Board of Directors in 1984 and nine years later was called from his pastoral position at St. Paul in Cudahy to become superintendent of the WLHS Conference. He guided the high school for 19 years and in 2012 assumed the position of executive director of the WLHS Foundation.

On Saturday, April 23, a retirement celebration was held to recognize the 23 years that Pastor Jim Kleist was a part of the ministry at WLHS. During his tenure, Kleist led a talented team that implemented a number of initiatives, which changed WLHS significantly. Three major capital campaigns enhanced the school and its facilities. The Math and Science wing was built, an outdoor stadium was created, the Project Lead the Way® engineering program was implemented, the College Readiness Continuum and student learning Resource Center were established and a campus pastor was added.

Most recently, Kleist helped launch Gifted for Praise, which enabled the high school to undergo a much-needed facelift. A striking new front entrance and atrium now deliver a positive first impression.

In addition, the building was expanded with the construction of a Fine Arts wing and specialized Project Lead the Way and FACE (Family and Consumer Education) classrooms and labs.

In 2001, he embraced the opportunity for gospel outreach through the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program. Since then, the school has welcomed a more diverse student body that’s reflective of the world outside of WLHS.

To God the Glory!

The legacy of Pastor Kleist will continue with a new scholarship.

Created with gifts from WLHS Foundation board members, family and friends, the James Kleist Endowed Scholarship will be awarded each year to a WLHS student.

That same year, with an eye toward the future, Kleist encouraged the establishment of the WLHS Foundation as a separate entity to provide ongoing funding for tuition assistance, faculty development and program enhancements. What began in the late 1980s as a small fund managed internally with just $40,000 has now grown to more than $12 million in assets. Today, the Foundation provides WLHS with an annual distribution of nearly $450,000.

“I feel overwhelmingly blessed to have been one of God’s instruments to serve Wisconsin Lutheran High School for two decades,” says Kleist. “All praise is his.

He has showered our ministry with dedicated faculty and talented board members who love the Lord and he’s moved the hearts of many beloved donors to give generously. As I retire, I’m thrilled beyond belief knowing he’s found someone as talented as Kris Metzger to carry on the important work of the Foundation.”

Meet Kris Metzger, NEW Executive Director of the WLHS Foundation Kris Metzger is a ’72 grad who knows the high school well. Her husband, John “Hans,” as well as all four of her children, attended WLHS and she previously served on the WLHS Foundation board for nine years. Her background includes a teaching degree from Dr. Martin Luther College and 17 years of fundraising experience at Wisconsin Lutheran College.

Guided by Faith

The record books will show the WLHS wrestling team had its most successful year ever but Coach Darrell Roecker says the season isn’t measured by pins and wins.

Members of the wrestling team were presented with the Sportmanship Award from the 2016 WIAA State Tournament during a special ceremony after chapel.

“We achieved many incredible things this year but our ultimate goal is to turn boys into Christian men who become Christian husbands and Christian fathers,” says Roecker who has coached WLHS wrestling for the past 12 years and also serves as assistant principal.

This winter, the team set school and state records.

WLHS was 16-1 during the regular season and, for the first time in school history, advanced to the final match at the WIAA State Tournament. With that accomplishment, WLHS became the first private school to make it to the finals since the tournament’s founding in 1992.

At state, WLHS secured the Division 2 runner-up title and, for the second time in a row, Roecker was named coach of the year. Most importantly, the team was honored with the WIAA Sportsmanship Award for the winter tournament season.

“The sportsmanship award epitomizes our program.

We always talk about who we represent—our Lord, our school and our families,” says Roecker. “How we conduct ourselves and go about our business speaks volumes about who we are as men.”

In addition to character building, the WLHS wrestling program stresses academics. Every Monday, the team gathers for an hour-long study hall. Roecker and Coach Bill Plamann check grades, discuss the week ahead and make sure each student has a plan to handle homework, upcoming projects, practices and meets.

The emphasis on academics has paid off. During the past five years, the team has placed an average of five to six athletes on the All-State Academic Team.

This season, five WLHS wrestlers earned the honor.

Another hallmark of the team is its dedication to each other. Every single one of the boys attended the team banquet and each was accompanied by a family member or friend.

“Our parents this year were outstanding. We had great support throughout the season, especially at our away meets,” says Roecker. “When it was time for the banquet, I think all of the boys just wanted one last time to be together as a team.”

“We tell the boys that a wrestling season is similar to life.

There are good times and there’s adversity and challenges to overcome but hard work, dedication and a focus on faith are necessary at all times,” Coach Darrell Roecker.

Wrestling Perspectives “As freshman parents, it was an awesome experience.

Everyone supported each other—no matter what grade they were in or what skill level they were at. It was Jacob’s first time wrestling but he loved it and is 100% committed to the team for the next three years,” parents Rhonda and James Grabczyk, St. Lucas Church, Bay View “Coach Roecker is able to connect with African-American boys and, as a mother of four boys, that means a lot to me.

The first two years of high school Tristen hadn’t found his way.

Junior year, after joining the wrestling team, that all changed.

Coach took him under his wing and he blossomed. He became more responsible, his study habits improved and his leadership skills developed. Tristen always had it in him but it took the right type of mentor to draw it out. He’s now planning to attend college and is considering pediatric medicine,” Dea and Trasus Wright, Milwaukee “I wrestled all four years and it definitely made me a better person. Coach Roecker and Coach Plamann taught me the value of hard work and how it applies to all aspects of life.

This year, I was team captain. It was my job to inspire the younger wrestlers and let them know it’s all about hard work,” Bryce Roberts, Salem Lutheran Church, Milwaukee Roberts wrapped up third place in the 220 lb. weight class at the WIAA State Tournament and was selected for the All-State Academic Third Team. He also played four years of football at WLHS and is attending Northern Michigan University on scholarship as a defensive lineman.

At the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament, a record-setting five wrestlers won medals to lead the Vikings: Third Place – Brian Corbins (junior, 138 lb. weight class), Quinton Reed (senior, 285), and Bryce Roberts (senior, 220) Fifth Place – Tyler Roecker (senior, 106) Sixth Place – German Fitzgerald (junior, 195)

Driven by Excellence – Academic Offerings Expand

The upcoming school year marks an exciting time for WLHS and its students. On August 18, the first full day of school, each freshman, sophomore, junior and senior will receive a Google Chromebook®.

With Chromebooks in hand, WLHS is embarking on a one-to-one learning approach to provide more individualized academic support for all students.

Incoming freshmen can earn WLHS credits for Algebra 1, Geometry, Latin 1, German 1 and Spanish 1 classes by meeting specific test and grade criteria.

The WLHS Technology Team with its newest member, Peter Iles, director of instructional technology, leading the initiative.

“The ability to earn high school credits takes advantage of the strong teaching and learning that is happening in our conference elementary schools.

Students can get a head start on their graduation requirements, which means, later on they may be able to explore a class that otherwise would not have fit into their schedule,” says Leyrer. “Ultimately, we feel it’s another way to help create well-rounded Christian teens who’ve had experiences in many different subject areas.”

“We anticipate the Chromebooks will become a dynamic tool in our teachers’ hands and help them manage the shift from teacher-centered to studentcentered learning,” says Principal Phil Leyrer who is overseeing the transition.

The advantages of Chromebooks are many.

Teachers can gather immediate feedback from quizzes and other response mechanisms to determine what content needs additional instruction and which students require individual assistance.

“In my experience, one of the greatest advantages is that every student has a voice,” says Iles. “During a typical class, not every student is called on but with this technology teachers can check in with everyone and provide additional support to those who need it.”

Iles will work closely with WLHS faculty as they incorporate Chromebooks into their daily instruction.

Many teachers already have plans in place for the technology.

“I’m excited because we can easily transition between collaborative forum conversations and independent research during class time,” says Andrew Gerlach, a Spanish and Latin teacher at WLHS. “Plus, Chromebooks make it possible for students to create electronic, web-based portfolios, tracking their learning gains throughout the year.”

Another significant change for the 2016-17 school year includes a new program that awards high school credit for qualified 7th-8th grade coursework.

Meet Peter Iles, Director of Instructional Technology With an impressive resume and track record, Iles is highly regarded in the world of technology and education.

In 2011, while principal of Grace Lutheran School in Oshkosh, he became the first teacher in the United States to incorporate Google Chromebooks into classroom learning.

Based on his trailblazing use of technology, Iles was invited to give the keynote presentation at the Google Education Summit on adoption and implementation of Chromebooks and 21st century learning skills in a web 2.0 classroom. Most recently, Iles was district technology leader for the Wauwatosa School District.

“I’m excited to work in a Christian environment again. I’ve known Phil Leyrer almost my entire life.

He’s a tremendous leader and knows what it takes to effectively implement a new initiative. I can’t think of anyone else I’d rather work with.”

In addition, for those who are on an advanced track, WLHS is now offering dual credit collegelevel courses.

“WLHS has established partnerships with Wisconsin Lutheran College and Bethany Lutheran College that will allow our students to earn college and high school credit at the same time. Our offerings will be

carefully selected as we monitor this process to make sure it serves our students appropriately.

In time, we hope to deliver a number of courses under this arrangement,” says Leyrer.

The WLHS credits will be accepted by each college and will transfer to most other postsecondary institutions.

The addition of Chromebooks is made possible by the recent installation of a dark optical fiber connection.

Funding for the project came from early donations to the Imagine the Future capital campaign.

Rocket Man

Rockets and space are the stuff of dreams for many little boys and girls. But, for one WLHS grad, it’s his daily reality.

Max Long (’07) is a lead launch engineer with SpaceX in Cape Canaveral, Florida, and, during the five years he’s been with the company, has been involved with 22 missions—ranging from International Space Station resupply, scientific government launches to communications satellite deployments.

Most recently, he helped oversee the takeoff of a Falcon 9 rocket that placed a Japanese communications satellite into space. A significant achievement of the mission was the re-entry and landing of the first stage rocket on an autonomous drone ship in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

He was accepted into the prestigious Florida Institute of Technology where he earned a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering. He continued at Florida Tech and received his master’s in aerodynamics/fluid dynamics while also working as an intern at SpaceX. In addition to the long hours his job requires, being part of the scientific community has required a strong faith.

“There are diverse viewpoints in the science and technology communities on everything from religion to rocket science,” says Long. “My faith has been a critical part of my path in life and has been invaluable in helping me tackle challenges when they arise.”

“All the hard work pays off when one of our rockets lift off,” says Long. “It’s exciting and rewarding because I have an enormous amount of responsibility to ensure everything with the second stage of the rocket is ready.”

For Long, his journey to SpaceX wasn’t predetermined. In fact, although he had always been good at math, he didn’t have a specific focus. It wasn’t until he took chemistry and physics at WLHS that his interest in science crystalized.

“My senior year I had physics with Mr. Greschner and that was a turning point for me. He made the class engaging, fun and treated us like adults,” says Long. “We learned about Newton’s Laws of Motion, trajectories, velocity, kinematics and all kinds of things that really interested me. It was physics that directed my path toward engineering.”

A Path to the Ministry

Each year, WLHS graduates answer the Lord’s call and enroll at Martin Luther College (MLC) to prepare for the preaching or teaching ministry.

Aaron Bush (’15)

Pre-Seminary Program Attended: Good Shepherd’s Lutheran Grade School, West Allis His Path: Bush hadn’t thought about becoming a pastor until he took an eighth grade field trip to Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary. He didn’t have family members who were in the ministry but found lots of support from WLHS teachers. He says physics with Mr. Greschner was especially impactful since each class started with devotion.

Reflections: “I’m so thankful Wisco was a mix of cultures. It’s a great perspective of the real world and something I value. I’m excited to become a pastor because I love God. I love his Word and I love sharing the message with others.”

Donovan Williams (’15)

Pre-Seminary Program Attended: Loving Shepherd Lutheran Grade School, Milwaukee His Path: Williams was considering the field of meteorology but changed his mind after a senior year experience. As a member of the National Honor Society, he was asked to lead a chapel. He was stressed in the days leading up to it but his nerves disappeared once he realized God was speaking through him to deliver the Word.

Reflections: “I took three years of Spanish at WLHS so my ultimate dream is to become fluent and serve in a Latin American country.”

Hannah Midthun (’13)

Secondary Education, Double Major in Chemistry and Life Science Attended: St. Lucas Lutheran Grade School, Bay View Her Path: Midthun had always considered teaching but a visit to MLC her junior year confirmed it was the career she truly wanted to pursue. Science is a passion of hers and Midthun says she can’t wait to share her favorite subject with students.

Reflections: “At WLHS, there are a lot of opportunities to get involved. I took AP classes, played soccer, was on Agents of Change and sang in choirs. I feel those experiences made me a well-rounded person and that helps me more easily connect with others.”

Jazzmin Sanchez (’14)

Middle and Secondary Education, Secondary Vocal Major Attended: Christ-St. Peter Lutheran Grade School, Milwaukee Her Path: Sanchez discovered her calling in sixth grade. As part of her school’s Big Buddy program, she spent time in the kindergarten classroom and saw how the teacher helped so many little children. Sanchez says she knew right then she wanted to become a teacher.

Reflections: “I’d tell other Wisco students to follow your dream. If you’re passionate about teaching, go for it. My younger sister also plans on being a teacher and is starting MLC in the fall.”

Keri Jackson (’15)

Pre-Seminary Program Attended: Business and Economics Academy, Milwaukee His Path: For Jackson, a chapel by the WLHS campus pastor about reaching out and sharing the truth of the gospel with a wide assortment of people inspired him to think about the ministry. That talk made him realize his leadership talents and deep, unwavering faith could help spread God’s Word far and wide.

Reflections: “I joined the cross country team senior year and it just clicked. I found my place and my group. I became close with Coach Lueck, his sons and his entire family. Coach helped me with my decision to attend MLC and has encouraged me along the way.”

Dedicated to Helping Others

WLHS grads pursue many different paths and a good number choose to serve others through the medical field.

As a child and into her teenage years, Laurie (Bilitz) Smrz (’89) RN, BSN, AE-C was in-and-out of the hospital due to chronic asthma.

“I got a lot of exposure to the profession when I was young. I knew I could personally relate to kids not being able to breathe and I felt compelled to help them,” says Smrz.

Smrz attended Carroll University and for nearly 10 years was the asthma coordinator for Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. This November, she accepted a new position and now manages all aspects of Children’s five Urgent Care locations.

For Maddy Krueger (’09) RN, BSN, a nursing position at Children’s was her dream job. She quickly reached that goal and immediately set another for herself.

Krueger is currently working on her master’s degree at Marquette University to become a nurse practitioner and plans to graduate next May.

And, even though she’s busy with work and school, she returned to WLHS four years ago to coach the dance team.

“I love watching the girls grow as dancers and young Christian women,” explains Krueger. “I’m someone they can relate to and talk to about their lives and plans for the future.”

Kannenberg

His career choice was greatly influenced by a WLHS Share the Mission trip to Zambia.

“Spending time in a Sub-Saharan country really opened my eyes to the state of international health care and it’s led to me consider joining Doctors Without Borders or the Peace Corps once I complete my residency,” says Kannenberg.

He credits a number of other high school experiences with his college success.

“My Wisco years were so valuable. I honestly felt like I was surrounded by family. I knew the teachers truly cared and wanted everyone to reach their full potential. The diversity of the student body really added to that feeling; our family included kids from all over the city and the world! Most importantly, though, I know that my faith grew during my time at Wisco. I was also involved in a lot of things and learned the important lesson of how to balance school, activities, and the rest of my life.”

Ben Kannenberg (’14) has lofty plans for his future, including a desire to practice medicine internationally. Kannenberg, who was class valedictorian and a National Merit Scholarship finalist, received a full scholarship to the University of Oklahoma and is double majoring in chemical biosciences and international studies.

Balancing responsibilities is something Bill Raasch (’77) MD is familiar with. Each fall, he can be found on the sidelines of WLHS football games as the team physician. It’s a volunteer role he’s gladly held for more than 20 years, even though he has many other commitments.

Raasch, who has been recognized as one of the top 10 surgeons nationally, is a professor of orthopaedic surgery and director of sports medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). He’s also head physician for the Milwaukee Brewers and Milwaukee Ballet Company.

“I simply ask ‘Why wouldn’t I be involved?’ Both of my sons went to Wisco and we’re 100% loyal. The school provides a great education that’s Christian. The teachers always put the students first and sacrifice so much. I just try to help in any way I can,” says Raasch.

Luke Schroeder (’11), who is considering a career in primary care so he can help both children and adults, is finishing his first year of medical school at the MCW. He attended Wisconsin Lutheran College (WLC) and subsequently received a full scholarship to MCW. Schroeder

“I don’t take credit for the scholarship. It was God’s work and his blessing,” says Schroeder.

While at WLHS, Schroeder applied the academic talents God gave him.

He maintained a 4.0 GPA, was a member of the National Honor Society and played tennis. He also took several AP classes, which allowed him to earn college credits and load his schedule with the core science classes he needed for medical school.

“WLHS gave me a great academic foundation and introduced me to kids from all different backgrounds.

Personally, I think it’s better to engage with people who aren’t exactly like you.”

However, Leverence wasn’t entirely new to the department. She earned her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license while at WLC and had been working at Children’s for three years.

“Once I started at Children’s, I knew I was in the right field. Every day is different and challenging but I know I’m having an impact on children and their families,” says Leverence.

Richard Haile (’74) MD has had an impact far and wide for the past three decades. Haile is a boardcertified internist with Saint Luke’s Medical Group–Lee’s Summit in Kansas City and a 30-year veteran of the Army Reserves.

While in the Reserves, he was deployed several times overseas to Afghanistan, Kuwait, Iraq, Ecuador and Guyana and was commander of a Combat Support Hospital in the Middle East.

Haile

Haile knew when he entered WLHS that he wanted to pursue medicine. One of his uncles was a physician but he also had personal experience with doctors due to asthma and allergies.

His medical conditions didn’t hold him back however.

During high school, he lettered in football, wrestling, track and was senior class president.

“I still have friends from high school and we reconnect when I visit Milwaukee. I enjoyed every year that I was at Wisco and I hold it close to my heart,” says Haile.

Ashley Leverence (’11) RN, BSN is just starting out in her career but has already made her mark.

When she joined the Children’s Hospital emergency department in May, she became the first new graduate ever hired right out of college.

WLHS Good News!

Academics

Senior Donald Harris was selected to attend the weeklong Senate Scholar Program at the Wisconsin state capitol in Madison. Harris was the 2015-16 student body president.

Sophomore Alexa Koltermann was recognized by the 2016 Young People’s Art Exhibit for her colored pencil drawing of a white tiger titled “Crystal.” Her piece will be on display during the Wisconsin State Fair this August.

The WLHS Chess Team capped off its season with a ninth place Division 1 finish and fifth place Division 3 finish at the Wisconsin State Championships in Oshkosh.

School News

A recent donation allowed the trade and technology department to purchase Gas Metal Arc Welding equipment. The new equipment, along with two CNC machines and a 3-D printer, allows students to work with current, real-world technology.

Co-curriculars

In May, Ned Goede (pictured second from left) and Karen Mary Lippert (pictured third from left) each received awards from the Civic Music Association. Goede was named 2016 Educational Administrator of the Year Award and Lippert was recognized with a certificate of excellence for Instrumental Music Instruction.

Goede currently teaches select religion courses and directs several choirs, including Wisco Kids and A Capella. From 1991-2016, he led WLHS as its principal.

During that time, he always made sure he was involved in hands-on teaching and directing. Goede is a tireless champion of the Fine Arts and his commitment to excellence resonates throughout the school.

Lippert, who has more than 30 years of experience, is the WLHS grade school instrumental music Instructor and also administers the highly acclaimed weeklong WELS Summer Band Camp for middle school students.

Five members of the Forensics Team earned silver medals at the State Festival in Madison.

The 2016 WLHS Auction met its goal, raising more than $300,000 to support the high school. Part of the evening included a drive to purchase Chromebooks for the upcoming school year. Chromebook matching funds are still available and donations are being accepted for this initiative. James Hahm earned his master’s degree in science and engineering education from the University of Texas at Austin. Hahm teaches Project Lead the Way classes and is the trade and technology department coordinator.

This school year, four WLHS students were baptized into the Lutheran faith. Juniors Charlie Huangqi and Isaiah Bones-Staples; sophomore Greg Chambers; and freshman Luke Chen received the blessing of baptism.

Richard Passow (’68) was recently selected as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO), an organization within the Department of Homeland Security. The mission of DNDO is to develop and implement, in coordination with interagency partners, a Global Nuclear Detection Architecture.

Joyce (Goede) Sadler (‘73) and Beatriz “Bita” (Heidtmann) Vaghetti Andersson (‘73) traveled to Bita’s hometown of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil last November. Bita is retired from teaching and the global AFS board. Bita has a strong faith, which she credits for guiding her through several extensive cancer surgeries.

Cherie (Elmer) Gabrielse (‘89) and her husband Aaron were blessed on July 31, 2015 with a daughter, Lilyahna, after 15 years of marriage.

Cherie and Jeff own and operate lasers for their company, The Cosmetic Laser Center.

Amy (Schulz) Craig (’99) and her husband David (‘97), State Representative for District 83, welcomed Ruth Jean on January 28, 2016. Ruth Jean was baptized at St. John’s Oakwood Church and her sponsors are Mary (Craig) Mengel (’88) and Andy Schulz (’94).

Ruth joins siblings William, James, Henry, Greta and Paul.

Hannah Corbett (’15) is now a U.S. Air Force Air National Guard Airman First Class. Airman Corbett graduated from basic training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland Air Force Base on April 8, 2016 after completing an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.
