George and Joan Bauman’s long relationship with WLHS began 40 years ago when their youngest son, Dan, graduated in 1978. What followed was three generations of Baumans who have been supporting and giving back to WLHS in big, small and creative ways.

The family’s first donation was unexpected. It came in 1982 from Scott, George and Joan’s oldest son, when he allocated a portion of an insurance settlement to WLHS. At the time, Scott didn’t have a connection to the high school but he valued Christian education. Two decades later, both of his sons would attend WLHS. “One of the best decisions my wife and I ever made was sending our boys to a WELS grade school and high school,” says Scott. “Wisco prepared them not only academically but spiritually too. Both of our sons excelled in college and continue to excel in their careers.”

George and Joan started with their time. In 2004 and 2005, in return for 50 volunteer hours at WLHS, the ExxonMobil Foundation provided a $2,000 check to the high school.

Later, George left his employer but the couple continued giving of themselves by helping with the Wisco Auction. It became a family affair when Cindy (Bauman) Ross and her husband, Jim, also signed on to volunteer for the fundraising event.

Joan established a scholarship. In 2008 when George passed away, Joan combined the undesignated memorial checks she received with contributions from her children to create an annual scholarship. After two years, she decided to establish the endowed George Bauman Memorial Scholarship as a living legacy to her husband.

“Our family truly believes in the lifelong value of a Christian education at Wisco. It’s a priceless gift that lasts forever and something we want to share with others,” says Cindy.

“The scholarship idea really came from my daughter, Cindy, because her daughter, Jessie, received scholarship support when she attended Wisco,” explains Joan.

A third generation is now coming forward. Altogether, four grandchildren have graduated from WLHS— Nick (‘07) and Tim (‘11) Bauman and Jessie (‘09) and Ron (‘10) Ross.

Thanks to generous donors, each year approximately 200 students receive scholarship and tuition assistance to attend WLHS.

Bold Ambition for the Ministry

Donovan Williams Donovan Williams (’15) plans to use his considerable talents to serve the Lord as a bilingual pastor. He’s academically gifted, has a knack for language and is an entrepreneurial leader.

Although Williams, who’s currently a junior at Martin Luther College (MLC), still has years of education ahead of him, this summer he took a number of significant steps to prepare for his calling.

Spanish Study Abroad At the end of May, he left to spend a month in Argentina in a Spanish language immersion program.

While there, he lived with a local couple, attended

“During my senior year at Wisco, everything came together and pointed me in the direction of the ministry. My family and I visited MLC. Pastor Fisher shared with me his life experience and a few weeks later I delivered a chapel. I realized then that I wanted to spread God’s word and share it with others.”

Williams says the in-country experience was invaluable.

“Using my Spanish skills every single day made such a difference in my language proficiency and fluency,” he explains. “To keep improving, next summer I plan to study in Chile for eight weeks.”

Williams took three years of Spanish at WLHS and credits his teacher, Ms. Tranberg, for making it one of his favorite subjects.

Chaplain Internship

Just days after returning from Argentina, Williams began a two-month internship with Chaplains in Schools to minister to children and teachers who were part of a summer school run by the Center for Urban Teaching.

“Every day, the chaplain program gave me real-life learning opportunities,” says Williams. “I built my confidence by speaking in front of classrooms.

I figured out how to interact with grade school students and communicate effectively with teachers.

I know I grew a lot.”

Pastor Paul Steinberg supervised Williams and the six other chaplain interns.

“Donovan has a great missionary mindset because he’s willing to venture out and try things,” says Steinberg. “On his own initiative, he developed a 30-minute religion class for the scholars, which is something the teachers really appreciated. Because Donovan has so many skills, he could serve in any ministry, anywhere and really be wonderful.”

Driven by Excellence

WLHS Grad Completes College in 2 ½ Years During his time at WLHS, Mason LaMarche (‘15) was one of those students who everyone knew, admired and respected.

“For me, Wisco offered a lot of opportunities to be involved and lead. The ability to explore my different interests made my high school years really positive.

I learned so many skills in and out of the classroom that translated to success in college.”

Mason LaMarche Among other things, he served as an in-patient volunteer for the Bone Marrow Transplant, Orthopedic and Burn units at UI Hospitals and Clinics. During that time, he received a “Making a Difference Award,” which is given to the top 10% of volunteers who positively impact the patient experience.

Based on his WLHS Student Council experience as treasurer, he was voted to the financial director position for the Medicus Pre-Medical Honor Society, the university’s largest academic organization.

And, since he has a passion for science, he created an outreach initiative that brings UI professors into elementary school classrooms to lead engaging, hands-on experiments that ignite students’ interest in the subject.

emphasized the importance of understanding concepts instead of just memorizing information,” says LaMarche. “The international and multicultural environment taught me how to connect and collaborate with others,

which is something I’ve had to do a lot during college in my various leadership positions. I made lifelong friends at WLHS who I leaned on during my freshman year of college when everything was new and I felt alone and isolated. Most importantly, I learned Christian values that continue to guide me and shape my decisions and priorities.”

Mission Trips Create Love for Service

Peter Buschkopf (’09) and Alex Lueck (’12) are long-term Kingdom Workers serving two different congregations in Santiago, Chile. Buschkopf and Lueck both point to their WLHS mission trips as major influences on their decision to serve internationally.

Alex Lueck (’12) was just 17 years old when she traveled to Santiago, Chile, for a 10-day mission trip with five other WLHS students. Six years later, after graduating from Drake University and spending eight months teaching in Spain, she’s returning to Santiago but this time she’s made a two-year commitment to Kingdom Workers.

“I went on two mission trips during high school and those definitely impacted me,” says Lueck.

“I experienced the joy of sharing God’s Word in a foreign country.”

While Lueck liked her teaching position and the time she spent in Spain, something wasn’t quite right.

“There wasn’t a church I could attend and I missed having that fellowship,” says Lueck. “I realized that if I wanted to continue working internationally, I needed to pursue opportunities that included my faith.”

Now, through Kingdom Workers, Lueck will be teaching English at a K-12 school and supporting the work of La Cisterna Iglesia Luterana—the same church she helped when she was a WLHS junior.

“God worked things out and I’m going back to help the church and people I met my first time in Santiago,” says Lueck. “It’s exciting because I know Mario, the pastor who’s leading the congregation, from when I stayed with his family in 2011.”

In 2018, WLHS is offering 17 international and domestic mission trips. Beginning in March and continuing through August, 121 students will help share the gospel in China, Columbia, Mexico, Thailand and Zambia, as well as Atlanta, Chicago, Colorado Springs, Detroit and Eagle River, Alaska.

Peter Buschkopf (‘09) “Because of my high school mission trips, I became interested in learning a foreign language, interacting with people of other cultures and participating in missions with fellow Christians around the world.”

After graduating from Wisconsin Lutheran College in 2013, Buschkopf spent two years in China sharing the gospel as part of Friends of China.

“When I came back to the United States, I realized I missed the vigor and drive of being focused on the Great Commission. Moving to Chile allows me to pursue my lay person ministry, which is something I love.”

WLHS Alum Raises Money for Zambia In November 2017 as part of a college class, Noah Schroeder (’14) (back row, far left) organized a fundraiser for the WELS Zambia Project Fund. Schroeder has a deep connection to Zambia and its children. As part of a WLHS mission trip, he spent nearly two weeks in the country, teaching Bible lessons at churches and schools in and around the capital of Lusaka.

“We held a week-long Vacation Bible School and had close to a hundred kids show up every single day,” says Schroeder. “Getting to know the children and teaching them about God was the most rewarding week of my life. Many of the kids we taught were very poor and didn’t have shoes.”

“As I was leaving Zambia, I promised myself that I would not forget my experience and, if I could, I would help in the future.”

Schroeder turned that promise into a reality by hosting a video game tournament. The money raised has been specifically designated to purchase shoes, as well as pencils, paper and other necessary supplies, for children who attend the schools and churches he served during his mission trip.

Success in Numbers

Across the country, WLHS alumni are putting their considerable numerical talents to work in finance, actuarial science and business analysis.

A Commitment to Community Katrina Malone (’90) is an accomplished financial strategist who’s distinguished herself professionally and personally.

In 2013, after nearly 20 years in global banking and technology, she served as a project finance consultant for a transformative Katrina Malone $40 million faith-based campus project. That experience led her to found Community Finance Advisors (CFA) in Chicago.

CFA aligns Malone’s business expertise in financial structuring and valuations with her desire to develop urban markets and promote the creation of sustainable communities in the Midwest.

She points to her Lutheran grade school days at Beautiful Savior (now called St. Philip’s) and years at WLHS for establishing a foundation of volunteerism and service to others.

“The senior class trip to New York with Pastor Ibisch impacted me greatly. We distributed food at a subway station and that was the first time I’d seen homeless people,” says Malone. “That stayed with me and led me to serve for several years on the board of directors of two nonprofits focused on housing—Deborah’s Place and Genesis Housing Development Corporation.”

Steiner has excelled in her field and was recently promoted to director at Willis Towers Watson in Hartford, Connecticut, where she’s been for the last 10 years.

“Beyond the great education I got at Wisco, I really value the Christian environment and base I established for the rest of my life,” says Steiner.

Several years later, Nick Bauman (’07) followed in the footsteps of Steiner.

He graduated from UW-Madison with a double major in Actuarial Science and Risk Management & Insurance and a 4.0 GPA. Those accomplishments, plus his involvement with the Actuarial Nick Bauman Club, led to a job right out of college with Milliman, one of the world’s largest providers of actuarial services.

Bauman credits his WLHS math teacher, Mr. Steiner (Kim’s father), with his career choice since it was Steiner who first mentioned the field.

“There are many Wisco coaches and teachers who stand out in my mind,” says Bauman. “Mr. Gottschalk because of his energy and passion. Mr. Greschner wasn’t afraid of being hard on people when they needed it, and Mr. Ricke because we studied each petition of the Lord’s Prayer to really understand what it meant. That’s stayed with me all these years.”

Blazing an Actuarial Path Kim Steiner (’00) was one of the first WLHS students to enter the actuarial science program at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Since then, the university has considered Wisco a consistent source for young talent.

“I felt prepared for college and tested out of most of the basic requirements. In terms of math, I easily got A’s and had some of the top scores in my classes,” says Steiner.

For the 2018-19 school year, WLHS will offer two new Advanced Placement (AP) classes—AP Physics and AP Statistics.

Achieving a 23 on the ACT means a student scored in the top third of all test takers nationwide.

A Life Lesson

By taking all the AP math Victor Campbell (’06) grew up surrounded by education and business since both of his parents were teachers and entrepreneurs.

His love of math started early and continued during high school. He was a member of the WLHS math track team all four years in addition to playing varsity basketball.

He was a smart kid, but it was Mr. Greschner who told him his study habits would be detrimental to his success.

“Learning came naturally to me so I was a procrastinator.

That caught up with me my freshman year of college so I came back to talk to Mr. Greschner,” says Campbell. “He gave me direct feedback and, based on his advice, I made changes that produced results.”

Campbell graduated from Lake Forest College with a Business and Economics major and later went on to earn his MBA in finance from Marquette University.

“My days at Wisco helped shape me into the man I am today,” says Campbell. “My four closest friends are all from high school, and we share that bond of religion. It’s something I value, especially in today’s world when people don’t really know who they are.”

Campbell is currently finance manager at Alcami Corporation in Germantown.

Actuarial Accolades Kirk Peter, a faculty associate and Actuarial Club advisor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, considers WLHS a reliable pipeline for actuarial students.

“I’ve found that Wisconsin Lutheran grads are very well prepared mathematically for the challenge of our actuarial science program.

What’s really significant is the fact that there are 400 students in our program and just six Actuarial Club officers. Over the years, a number of WLHS grads, including one of our current officers (Forest Wu), have taken on leadership roles.

Each year, WLHS students volunteer to go back and give presentations at their high school. That speaks volumes about how they feel about the school and their teachers. I’ve seen it first-hand—passionate teachers create passionate students.”

It was 30 Years Ago Today

On a beautiful September afternoon, nearly 50 members from the class of ’87 gathered for their 30th reunion.

If you’d like to bring your classmates together for a reunion, the WLHS Mission Advancement Office provides a variety of resources, including free raffle items—stadium seats, pint glasses, The Class of 1987 While there were no reports of big hair, flight pants or scrunchies, there were many warm hugs, huge smiles, good laughs and funny stories retold.

The casual outdoor party, which officially ran from 2-7 p.m. but actually lasted well after midnight, was hosted by John Schlueter and his wife, Bethany.

“I’m a sentimental guy who loves to pull out his high school year book and remember the fun, goofy times I had,” says Schlueter. “I think having a common bond of faith made my high school friendships even stronger and I ask ‘Why wouldn’t I want to see everyone again?’”

The feeling was mutual since many classmates spent six, eight, even 10 hours catching up with each other.

Denise (Schlechta) Elton, whose two boys—Reece (’19) and Nolan (’21)—both attend WLHS, agrees.

“I reconnected with classmates I hadn’t talked to in years, and it actually felt like yesterday. All the great memories and silly things we did just came flooding back,” says Elton. “It was so special to see everyone again and reminded me of why I chose to send my boys to Wisco.”

’72 Claims First in Class Title In August, the class of ’72 held their 45th reunion at WLHS and accomplished something no other class has done before. Through generous donations, the group raised $4,000 to fund a four-year Class of 1972 Scholarship that will provide tuition assistance to a student who graduates in 2022! Since the class actually exceeded their original goal, they’re now working to reach $25,000 to endow the scholarship.

In Loving Memory

The Class with Class The year was 1972. Our WLHS band practiced “Colour My World.” Our Vikings basketball team went to battle with the Red Knights. We were the “Class with Class,” ready to take on the world!

This past summer, the Class of 1972 gathered once again at WLHS—this time for our 45th reunion. We toured old haunts and explored what’s new. We were all reminded that, although there have been many physical changes, what hasn’t changed is that WLHS still delivers a quality Christian education to more than 770 students, every day.

And, we all agreed that the education, friendships, memories and faith experiences are irreplaceable.

Wisco was, and is, a very special place.

One goal of the reunion was to create a four-year, $1,000 scholarship for a future WLHS student, giving him/her the same opportunity we had four decades ago. Because 26 classmates stepped forward to help fund the annual scholarship, we not only met but exceeded our goal of $4,000! And then another classmate asked: “Why can’t we continue this scholarship forever?” So the idea to endow the Class of 1972 Scholarship was born.

We will be the first WLHS class ever to endow a scholarship.

If we reach this level ($25,000), the fund would be able to award a $1,000 scholarship annually to a student, forever!

One of our classmates and her spouse were inspired to make a planned gift through their will that will go into this endowed fund when the Lord calls them home. Another classmate is considering this same idea with his wife. I have no doubt that the “Class With Class” will continue to make its mark at Wisco. And, we good-naturedly extend the challenge to other classes to do the same. What a wonderful way for alumni to share their blessings with future Vikings so that these young people might continue to grow in their faith in Jesus.

Faculty News

WLHS Teachers Launch Book Series

The Wandering Pirate Ship was written by English teacher Mary Schmal (’72) (left) and illustrated by art teacher and yearbook advisor Leanne Ross (right).

It’s an ambitious project but Mary Schmal (’72) and Leanne Ross have already debuted the first book in their Children of the Light series.

While Schmal handled the manuscript, Ross focused on bringing the book to life with 47 original pen and ink illustrations.

In January, The Wandering Pirate Ship rolled off the press and is now available at childrenofthelightbooks.com, Amazon and barnesandnoble.com.

“Our goal is to inspire young adult readers to dig deep into God’s word and realize they are each beautiful children of God,” says Schmal.

Set in 1884, the series follows the adventures of nine children who live on an island in a lighthouse. Each of the children represent one of the nine Fruit of the Spirit found in Galatians 5.

As an English teacher and author of several Christ Light texts, Schmal had been toying with the idea of writing a book for a number of years. She finally decided to put her thoughts on paper and the story flowed out.

“The book really started to soar when I brought Leanne into the project,” says Schmal. “We collaborate extremely well together and see God’s hand in our teamwork.”

Rankings are based on the cumulative GPA of seniors at the end of seven semesters. If several students share the same GPA, a tie-breaking formula is used.

WLHS Good News!

20 juniors are now participating in WLHS’ first-ever College Possible cohort. College Possible assists first-generation, college-bound students with the admissions process. Students commit to two hours of after-school programming twice a week during their junior and senior years, totaling more than 320 hours of training and coaching. The curriculum has a proven record of successfully transitioning high school students into college where they continue to receive support until graduation.

Co-curriculars In January, senior Ethan Rindfleisch was named a Pick ‘n Save Student Athlete of the Week.

WLHS is adding the ProStart culinary curriculum for the 2018-19 school year. The program includes intense study and real-world experiences that prepare students for the hospitality industry. After successfully completing the coursework and an exam, students earn a Safe Serve Certification, which is recognized by colleges and restaurants.

Rindfleisch was also the recipient of a $5,000 scholarship from the Rick Majerus Foundation.

The WLHS robotics team advanced to State after placing seventh overall in the FIRST Tech Challenge competition. The team also won the Design Award, placed third for the Innovate Award and came in second for the Inspire Award. This is the first time WLHS has placed in the Inspire Award category.

Three WLHS seniors have been honored by the National Merit Scholarship Program, an academic competition for recognition and college scholarships. Nathan Wranovsky (left) and Elisha Doerr (right) are finalists and Hannah Lukasik (middle) is a commended student. From the 1.6 million students who took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), just 15,000 are named finalists so Doerr and Wranovsky are in an elite class.

As a commended student, Lukasik is one of just 34,000 recognized.

WLHS has partnered with the National Federation of State High Schools Network to deliver livestreamed volleyball, boys and girls basketball and wrestling matches that are held at the high school. To subscribe, visit nfhsnetwork.com.

Athletic director, Jeff Sitz, received an NFHS Citation at the 48 th annual National Athletic Directors Conference. Sitz was one of eight athletic directors nationally to receive a citation for his contributions to interscholastic athletics at the local, state and national levels.

School News

This semester, five new international students from Japan and China joined the WLHS family. In total, 36 students from around the world are now pursuing their studies at WLHS.

Winter Festival 2018

This year’s Winter Festival activities included dress-up days—character day, squad day and pajama day.

There were also lunch-time games and a Pep Rally. Nick Strautmann (St. John Lutheran, Wauwatosa) was crowned Festival King and was accompanied by Sierra Jones (St. John Lutheran, Wauwatosa).
