I do. Not because I’ve enjoyed the daily uncertainty, feelings of a lack of control or real impact on people everywhere.

It’s people like you and our mission that I am thankful for. It makes us focus on Christ and his mission.

After laying out Christ’s sufficiency for our lives, St. Paul wrote from prison to the Colossians, “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful” (4:2).

The pandemic’s “imprisonment” drives us to pray to the one who has the power to furnish us with the strength that alone sustains us. It also makes us conscious of the blessings we have that can’t be taken away and the mission that keeps us working together.

I can’t help but be thankful to Christ for the following: • our faculty for their commitment in learning how to offer both virtual and in-person instruction simultaneously; • our faithful students and parents cooperating with us in order to make an effective hybrid model work; •

supporters like you who stepped up to help us raise the $500,000 needed to provide necessary safety mitigation, advanced technology in over 50 classrooms and other extraordinary facility needs; and

• our dedicated staff who have found creative ways to effectively support all the changes.

Praise God for our shared devotion to Christ’s mission at WLHS and the unity of purpose needed to keep moving forward!

Above all, the pandemic focuses us on our eternal mission —preparing young adults for lives of Christian service. It reminds us of the real source of power in our lives of faith— Christ and him alone.

When a world-wide pandemic shut down face-to-face learning, teachers and students adapted to online asynchronous learning.

WLHS’ best scores, as reported to colleges, show the top 75 percent of seniors averaged 23.8 (70th percentile) on the ACT. Achieving at the 70th percentile means a student scored in the top third of all students nationwide.

WLHS Records Highest Enrollment in 15 Years

Despite a global pandemic, God has continued to bless WLHS. This year, the total enrollment topped 883 students – a high-water mark for WLHS. “God has been watching over our institution, our faculty, staff, students and parents,” says Dr. Ken Fisher, president of WLHS.

For the 2020-21 school year, WLHS welcomed eight domestic residential students from California, New Hampshire, Texas, Wisconsin and the country of Kuwait to its campus.

“Word of our program continues to spread, and we now have our largest group of students to date,” says Brad Wetzel (’98), director of admissions. “Our new dorm allows teenagers who live out-of-state or outside of the metro Milwaukee area the opportunity to have a Christian high school experience.”

Hernandez is remotely attending California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo, majoring in architecture. Iglesias is remotely attending Louisiana State University, majoring in political communications.

Hybrid Learning at WLHS!

As any teacher, administrator or staff member will share, the lead up to the 2020-21 school year was challenging.

However, during the past few months, everyone at WLHS has pulled together to create the safest and best learning experience possible for all students.

Based on feedback from parents and students, WLHS adopted a Hybrid Learning Model: • 75% of the student body is attending school in-person four days a week plus one virtual learning day • 25% of the student body, including many international students, are attending virtually To prepare for the return of students, WLHS took a number of steps: • Installed a $300,000 air filtration system to remove germs and particles from the air

Video conferencing allows classrooms to safely engage with guest speakers — even from out of state!

• Upgraded classroom technology with cameras and other hardware that allow students to attend class virtually • Established a Support Desk to provide students and parents assistance with technology issues • Invested in teaching software, rearranged classrooms to allow for social distancing and enhanced its cleaning processes — among a whole host of other things

“It was a continually changing situation and we were adjusting plans on an almost daily basis,” says Academic Dean Mr. Jim Brandt.

“I’m proud of what we’re offering. There’s not another hybrid model that provides as much face-to-face learning time as we are.”

Through it all, Brandt says he witnessed the resoluteness, resilience and resourcefulness of WLHS as an institution.

Resolute WLHS was resolute in creating and maintaining a safe and healthy environment for its students.

School leaders developed a plan to accommodate students who were eager to return to an in-person learning experience while maintaining social distancing and having an overall safe environment.

“We were resolute in the fact that we wanted to continue to proclaim Christ. We felt it was critical during this time of uncertainty to bring our student body together to have daily chapel. It looks entirely different but we’re still gathering as a body of Christians to worship together and find solace in his Word,” says Brandt.

Each weekday, approximately 100 students are spread throughout the auditorium to attend chapel in person. The rest join from their homerooms and virtual learners watch the live stream.

“Everyone is here; we’re all present each day. Everyone is thankful to be able to work and has a greater appreciation for the fact that we’re able to see our students every day.

Resourceful Mr. Peter Iles, director of instructional technology, and his team had just one month to source, acquire and install the hardware every classroom needed to provide virtual learning.

“Knowing what technology is out there requires constant monitoring and it’s something our team does well. Wisco now has one of the highest quality consumer systems in the country, in every classroom, and it’s technology that will be viable for years to come,” says Iles.

Courageous Conversations About Race It’s a fact.

WLHS is one of the most ethnically and socioeconomically diverse high schools in Wisconsin.

Teenagers from all parts of Milwaukee and its suburbs come to WLHS. Teenagers from Wisconsin towns near and far, from other states and from other countries come to WLHS.

Where Do We Go From Here?

The mix of races, experiences and perspectives is a blessing from God and it’s what makes Wisco a unique and special place. That benefits all students.

The videos featured separate discussions with: two groups of students; a group of fathers; and a group of mothers.

“Just because there is substantial evidence that students benefit from an integrated education, doesn’t mean that it is not without significant challenges,” says WLHS president Dr. Ken Fisher.

Students shared their thoughts on the death of George Floyd, what the national awakening on race means to them, their personal experiences with racism and how their faith impacts today’s issues of race, social justice and social inequity.

“This summer has reminded us how racial issues continue to painfully divide our nation. We know that we have the unique power of the gospel to promote racial healing and help produce leaders for society.

That begins with listening and learning from one another—having real conversations about how we can improve.”

In June, WLHS recorded a series of four videos over four weeks called “A Conversation on Race: Where Do We Go From Here?”

The video series culminated in July with a Courageous Conversations event at WLHS where students and faculty came together to talk and listen to each other about issues of race.

As an institution and as individuals, the high school is constantly working to do better and be better and to create and foster a loving, caring, Christian environment where diverse students can learn from each other. “’Where do we go from here?’” That’s the question we asked ourselves and our students this summer and this school year,” says Fisher. “How can we be a role model and have courageous conversations about race so we can grow and understand each other and be united in Christ?”

Wisco Culture Club celebrates different cultures throughout the school year. The club's goal is bring cultural awareness through decorations, guest presentors, fun fact trivia and music over the PA system.

This summer, students, faculty and guest speaker Pastor Robinson met to have conversations on race and share their thoughts after the death of George Floyd

The video series was well received and together with an address from Assistant Principal Mr. C.L. Whiteside (’06) has generated nearly 10,000 views.

The faculty also spent a day of inservice in Bible study about healing the racial divides in America and more discussion is planned. It wasn’t the first time that they had dedicated time to reflection and learning about how issues of race affects us and our students.

Courageous Conversations

Each spring since 2013, WLHS has hosted a Civil Rights Tour for a diverse group of up to 32 sophomores and juniors who are emerging leaders in the school.

(Unfortunately, this past year’s tour was canceled due to Covid-19.)

In previous years, the students and faculty chaperones visited sites that were significant to the Civil Rights movement, including The Atlanta History Center, The Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site, The Edmund Pettis Bridge, the Rosa Parks Museum and iconic sites associated with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

As part of the Civil Rights Tour, students engage in a series of guided Courageous Conversations about what they’ve seen and race relations then and now.

Without exception, students refer to the trip as an eye-opening and life-changing experience.

The Courageous Conversations continue after students return to campus. Each month, Campus Pastor Dr. Phil Huebner (’99) and Assistant Principal Mr. C.L. Whiteside (’06) select a current event or topic related to race and diversity and gather the group to talk openly and honestly with each other.

“The trip and the monthly discussions are an opportunity for students to come together and really listen to each other in a loving way,” says Whiteside.

“It opens an important dialog for students to better understand and relate to each other.”

How Can We Do Better?

“Despite all that we are trying to do to help create an inclusive and welcoming environment for our diverse student body, we fail sometimes. We will continue to strive to live up to our Savior’s call to let love identify us as his disciples through our actions to others,” says Fisher (cf. John 13:35).

New Faculty

This year, WLHS added seven talented professionals to its full-time faculty.

Four Alums Return to WLHS Mr. Joe Janke (‘08) English Instructor Janke comes to WLHS from Manitowoc Lutheran High School where he served as an English teacher and coach.

Prior to that, he was principal and upper grade teacher at St. Paul Lutheran School in Joe Janke Menomonie, Wis. Janke earned his bachelor’s degree in Elementary and Secondary Education from Martin Luther College (MLC).

Koschnitzke previously served as pastor at St. John Lutheran Church (Newville) near Lake Mills and at Christus Lutheran School in Delavan. He graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary and earned a bachelor’s degree from MLC.

Ms. Gina Radue (‘12) Math Instructor Prior to joining WLHS, Radue taught math and was a dorm supervisor at Great Plains Lutheran High School in Watertown, S.D. She graduated from MLC in 2017.

Mr. Brad Reinhart (’07) Theology and Math Instructor Reinhardt comes to WLHS from St. Marcus Lutheran School in Milwaukee where he taught upper grade social studies and before that was a fourth grade teacher. Prior to teaching, he Brad Reinhart was a financial assistant at Trilogy Health. Reinhardt earned a bachelor’s degree in Theology from Wisconsin Lutheran College (WLC).

Recognition for 40 Years of Service Mr. Phil Leyrer is in his fifth year as principal and English teacher at WLHS. Prior to WLHS, he was principal at Siloah Lutheran School in Milwaukee and spent 10 years in the English department and administration at Martin Luther College (MLC).

Mr. Jeff Sitz (’74) has been a faithful servant at WLHS since 1981. He’s taught a variety of classes, including geography, English, physical education and health and has served as Athletic Director since 1985. Prior to Mr. Jeff Sitz joining WLHS, Sitz taught and was a dorm supervisor at Evergreen Lutheran High School in Tacoma, Wash. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin – Parkside and a master’s from Eastern Kentucky University.

Mr. Ben Carlovsky Theology Teacher, Assistant Soccer Coach Carlovsky comes to WLHS from Abiding Word Lutheran School in Houston where he was principal and upper grade teacher. Faculty Retirements

At the end of the 2019-20 school year, WLHS said farewell to some outstanding teachers and staff.

Dr. Carol Krause retired from Wisco after 35 years of service. It is interesting to note that a Krause has been on staff at the current Wisco building since the beginning.

Mrs. Beverly Braun retired after 28 years in the teaching ministry.

She leaves a legacy in the fine arts department as she produced school musicals and the WLHS Yearbook.

Another faithful teacher who retired is Art Instructor Ms. Marilyn Bond.

Bond served Wisco since 1993— the past few years in a part-time capacity. Throughout her tenure, she has played a prominent role in the fine arts visual department.

Mr. Kurt Seeger also retired from the teaching ministry after 44 years of service. During his time at Wisco, Mr. Seeger was the voice of the Wisco football program, as well as a State-winning coach.

Finally, Wisco said farewell to WLHS Foundation Executive Director Kristine Metzger (‘72). “I have been blessed to be involved with WLHS for half of my life,” Metzger says.

“I have a student, parent and employee perspective. It is my prayer that God continues to bless WLHS for countless years.”

Hall of Fame Inductees Every three years, WLHS recognizes those who have used their God-given talents to pursue excellence in their life, career or service to the high school.

Due to COVID safety measures this year, a small ceremony was held on Sunday, October 4. The following six new members were inducted into the high school’s Hall of Fame.

Distinguished Alumni Dr. Daniel Ebeling (‘94) In a relatively short amount of time, Dr. Dan Ebeling (’94) has reached a number of career milestones. He is a college chemistry professor, nationallyregarded researcher and published author. Ebeling was granted three patents for DNA sequencing-related technology and chemical sensors and has authored and co-authored more than a dozen articles for peerreviewed journals. As an undergraduate at Wisconsin Lutheran College (WLC), he conducted research in atmospheric chemistry at MIT with WLC professor, Keith Beyer, and Nobel Laureate Mario Molina. While earning his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, he conducted research for the Human Genome Project. Ebeling completed his Ph.D. in three years and returned to teach chemistry at WLC. For more than a decade, he’s collaborated with an engineering firm in California, providing opportunities for students to work on projects funded by NASA, the EPA, NSF and NIH. He regularly conducts research with his wife, Angela, a soil scientist and professor at WLC.

Athletics Jacob Fritz (‘06) Jake Fritz was a three-sport athlete at WLHS and a nine-time letter winner in football, wrestling and track and field. He was a team captain in all three sports his senior year and was selected a WIAA Senior Scholar Athlete Award recipient in 2006. His football teams were WLT conference champions in 2004 and 2005. They were WIAA State Champions in 2004 (14-0) and 2005 (13-1). Fritz was 1st team all-conference, Lineman of the Year, and 1st team all-state his senior year. In wrestling, Fritz was a two time all-conference performer, capturing a title his senior year. In track and field, he was a podium finisher in the shot put and the discus his junior and senior years. Fritz was the Sectional shot put champion his junior and senior year, and added the discus title his senior year. He placed fourth in shot put at the WIAA State Championships. Fritz still holds the indoor and outdoor school record in the shot put and is on the all-time top ten list in the discus. He went on to perform in track and field at the University of Wisconsin, where he still holds a top 10 all-time performance spot on their shot put list (58’ 8.75”).

Stewardship

Ministry Ken (‘74) and Joan Krueger

Ken (’74) and Joan Krueger have a passion for WLHS and its ministry and have given selflessly of their time, talents and treasures to support the high school. For the past two decades, their hands have touched every major campaign and initiative, propelling WLHS forward in countless ways. The couple, whose three children attended WLHS, have continually answered “Yes,” whenever they’ve been asked to serve. Ken was on the Board of Directors for both WLHS and the WLHS Foundation. For years, Joan was a dedicated and tireless volunteer for the Wisco Auction. Her commitment continues to this day as Joan joined the WLHS Foundation Board of Directors in 2018 and served on the committee that helped expand the WLHS campus with Honey Creek Hall.

Luther Kolander Luther Kolander embodied the spirit of a devoted Christian shepherd. His service began in 1945 when he accepted a call to Lutheran High. He remained there until the split in 1955 when he joined the fledgling faculty at WLHS. For 43 years, he taught Geometry and Algebra until his retirement in 1988.

Kolander was a long-time Junior Varsity baseball coach for the Vikings. For those he knew well, instead of saying “goodbye,” he would say, “I’ll see you in heaven.” Kolander was a constant witness for Jesus and would regularly share his faith others. The Kolander legacy at WLHS continues with the Luther and Bernice Kolander Family Scholarship.

Ministry/Athletics Kirk DeNoyer

Ministry Rev. James Kleist (‘68) Rev. Jim Kleist (’68) was a faithful servant leader to WLHS for nearly 30 years and during that time had an immeasurable impact on the institution. He served on the WLHS Board of Directors for 6 years, guided the school for 19 years as superintendent and was executive director of the WLHS Foundation for four years. Under his stewardship, WLHS embarked on three capital campaigns that changed the footprint of the high school and enhanced its academic and athletic offerings. The legacy of Rev. Kleist continues with the Kleist Family Scholarship.

Kirk DeNoyer has left a lasting imprint on the face of Wisconsin Lutheran High School. As a teacher, coach and administrator here in his 26 years of ministry, Coach DeNoyer’s impact remains in the culture of our school.

DeNoyer served as the varsity football coach at Wisconsin Lutheran for 20 years.

His team mantra, “First Lord, Second Team” has impacted generations of young men in the football program. DeNoyer was honored with a selection into the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2020. His greater contribution to our school however, was the change of the athletic culture.

The expectations of excellence through dedication in the weight room and the off-season training helped turn our football program around and impacted our athletic program in general.

Dan Squires (‘14) Wildland Firefighter Growing up, Dan Squires was always interested in the natural world and natural resources. When he came to WLHS, Mr. Roger Festerling and Mr. David Kren fostered his love of God’s creation and influenced his future career choice.

“Mr. Festerling got me involved in the outdoor classroom and a wetland restoration project, which was my first introduction to natural resource management,” says Squires. “Mr. Kren’s AP biology class set me up for success in my college-level biology courses.”

After graduating from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point with his bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Ecology and Management, Squires decided to pursue a wildland fire career.

This year, he became part of the Kings Peak Wildland Fire Module (WFM), which focuses on wildfire management rather than 100% suppression.

His “home forest” is the Ashley National Forest in northeast Utah. This summer, Squires spent 76 days on different fires in Colorado, Arizona and Utah.

“Fire is a natural part of many ecosystems in the West. In my position, I have the opportunity to prevent loss of life and property but also to be a steward of God’s creation,” says Squires.

Alumni Updates

In October 2020, Dianne Robertson (’71) was awarded the James R. Ryan Lifetime Achievement Award by the Wisconsin Policy Forum. This honor recognizes Dianne’s 45-year career in local government, specifically as Village Administrator in the Village of Thiensville, Wis. Emily Kratz (’97) had planned to run 200 miles on the Olympic Discovery Trail in Washington state, over a weekend in August 2020. After her intended race was canceled, she pivoted and achieved her goal to raise over $2,000 for Outdoor Afro, a network that celebrates and inspires Black connections and leadership in nature.

In October 2020, Susan Stirmel (’98) was promoted to Milwaukee Police Detective after years of service to the community. She is pictured accepting her promotion with her father, Mark Stirmel (’73).

Robyn (Thiele) Bowman (’99) wrote and illustrated the children’s book, The (Kinda Boring, Not That Great, Pretty Super Awesome) Garden Snail. She currently resides in Carlsbad, Calif. with her family.

Nesh Design and Media, a partnership of husband and wife team, Jerry Johnson (’99) and Lisa Johnson, celebrated its third anniversary. The company offers website creation, social media and digital marketing services for small businesses and non-profits.

Robina (Reddie) Biesterfeld (’01) added a new title as proud cheese curd model in a new Culver’s Restaurant commercial. It was a family affair with Robina’s husband, Micah, and daughter, Painter (5), also featured in the August 2020 shoot.

Sarah (Metzger ’01) and Brent (’07) Krohn welcomed their fourth child, Jane Elizabeth, on August 31, 2020. Big brothers include Gabriel (6), Wesley (4), and Ezra (2).

Dr. Krista Hernandez (’03) and her husband, Chris Supinger, welcomed Christopher Conrad on March 14, 2020. The family lives in Waukesha, and Krista works for Advocate Auroroa Health as a psychologist. Godparents are current WLHS Spanish teachers, Micah Hernandez (’01) and his wife Kaitlin.

Conrad was baptized by former WLHS Campus Pastor Aaron Robinson.

Allison (Cutting) Busch (’03) and her husband Brandon welcomed their second child, Rhett Charles, on May 10, 2020.

He joins big sister Emery. Allison is a charge nurse at American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison. The Busch family resides in Oconomowoc.

David Pede (‘06) and his wife, Kristy, welcomed their first child, George David, on September 15, 2019. David is a Sales and Marketing Coordinator for River Run, a technology company supporting data security and network safety. The Pede family resides in Milwaukee.

Lisa Pappalardo (‘07) was married to Schuyler Welch at an intimate wedding celebration on September 23, 2020. Lisa recently started working as a Labor and Delivery Nurse at Aurora Sinai Medical Center. The couple resides in Milwaukee.

Angie (Blasezyk) Raasch (‘08) PharmD, BCGP, recently became board certified in geriatric pharmacotherapy.

She works as a pharmacist at the Rehabilitation Hospital of Wisconsin taking care of patients post-stroke, amputation and after other debilitating illnesses.

In October 2020, Dominique Covington (’11) was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. He is currently an Officer Candidate in the USMC Officer Program, designated as the Candidate Platoon Commander for the Officer Selection Office – Milwaukee. Dominique is a Reservist, Bulk Fuel Specialist (1391) with the U.S. Marine Corps Shannon Oesterreich (‘11) and Alex Kocsis were married on August 1, 2020. Shannon is an On-Air Personality at iHeartMedia on the Milwaukee radio station FM106. The couple resides in Brookfield.

Alumni Updates On the 4th of July, Josiah Ricke (‘12) had the special honor of flying over the White House. Josiah serves in the Marine Corp and is training to fly AH-1Z attack helicopters.

He is currently stationed in Jacksonville, NC.

Janelle Radue (‘12) and Liam Nitz (‘14) were married on August 2, 2020. Liam is a correctional officer at Milwaukee County Jail and is pursuing police officer positions, while Gina serves as fifth grade teacher at Christ-St. Peter Lutheran School. The couple resides in St. Francis, Wis. Wedding party members included: Marcus (‘10) and Karah (Parbs) Radue (‘10), Gina Radue (‘12), Michael Radue (‘17), Meghan (Nitz) Walsh (‘07), and Haley (Nitz) Arndt (‘11). Mother of the groom is Heidi (Baewer) Nitz (‘81) and father of the bride, Joel Radue, is current WLHS teacher and football coach.

Eric Marshall (‘13) married Megan on July 11, 2020 in an intimate backyard family gathering. Eric currently works as a CPA for Deloitte & Touche LLP, while Megan works as a reporter for Spectrum News Wisconsin.

Eli Midthun (‘14) and fiancé, Kasandra, were engaged on July 4, 2020. The couple are planning a wedding in June 2021 at Camp Phillip, where they initially met. Eli currently serves as Assistant Program Director at Camp Phillip and Kasandra will serve as seventh grade teacher at Atonement Lutheran Grade School.

Aaron Martinez (‘15) and Christianna Habben (‘15) were married on August 24, 2019.

Aaron currently serves as a firefighter/paramedic, and Christi is a preschool teacher with Waukesha Head Start.

The couple resides in Waukesha.

Arianna Sanchez (‘16) was installed at Christ-St. Peter Lutheran School for the 2020 2021 school year. She is the first Hispanic teacher to be called to Christ-St. Peter.

Emily Frey (‘16) was the class speaker for Wisconsin Lutheran College’s 2020 commencement ceremony.

Emily is student teaching at Oak Creek High School and Westside Christian Academy.

Emily and fiancé, Levi Schriefer, are planning a wedding in July 2021.

Kyra Schultz (’16) and Jason Wegner (’16) were married on June 6, 2020. Jason currently works as a Mechanical Design Engineer at Entrust Manufacturing Technologies, while Kyra is a Medical Technologist at Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories. The couple resides in Menomonee Falls.

During a family vacation to Utah this past July, Elle Van Grinsven (‘17) became engaged to Micah Potter, a forward for the UW-Madison men’s basketball team.

The couple are planning a June 2021 wedding.

Mr. Eric Ruh has joined the Mission Advancement team as Director of Planned Giving. His focus will be on growing the WLHS Foundation and membership in the Raabe Legacy Society.

Ruh has an extensive background in financial planning and personal gifts. He worked as managing Eric Ruh director at Third Coast Advisors from 2018-20, was sales manager at Financial Solutions Group from 2012-18 and a brokerage manager at Horizon Financial Group from 2009-12. Prior to that, he was at Northwestern Mutual, TCF Bank and Security First Group.

Ruh is a 1992 Communication graduate from Wisconsin Lutheran College. He is married to Linda and they have a son, Mason (’21). Ruh enjoys spending time with family and friends and watching baseball.

Homecoming 2020

The aptly named “Fright Fest” Homecoming 2020 was a spirited week at Wisconsin Lutheran despite the safety measures in place. Face-to-face and virtual students, as well as faculty, participated in dress-up days such as iconic friend group, costume dress up and of course spirit day. Senior Skylar Abner (pictured left) from St. Philip’s Lutheran School, was crowned homecoming queen at the modified pep rally. Homecoming court included princesses Natalie Tesch (pictured right) from Star of Bethlehem Lutheran School and Sarah Bitter (pictured middle) from St. John’s Lutheran School, Milwaukee. Football, volleyball, and soccer games with limited, socially-distanced spectators all took place as well. We are proud of our students for displaying their school spirit despite the challenging circumstances.

2020 Flag Blessing Ceremony On October 1, Violet Rana (’22) carried her country’s flag (Nepal) to the annual Wisco blessing of the flag ceremony during chapel.

Violet is the first student from Nepal to attend Wisco and her country’s flag is now the 41st to hang in our atrium.

The flags represent the countries of origin from our past and present student body and international students.
