A Message from Pastor Kenneth Fisher President of the WLHS Conference Thanks for Supporting His Spirit’s Work WLHS has reached a significant milestone. 2018 marks the 115th year of preparing young adults for productive, Christ-centered lives. We are all part of one Spirit-filled story that stretches backward and forward in time. As Paul said, “And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit” (Ephesians 2:22). That happens when students, faculty, and staff gather daily in chapel and every student takes theology class. It happens when the Spirit sends 120 students on 17 mission trips around the United States and across the globe. That’s about 50 students more than ever before. It happens when 200-plus students are part of Wisco Witnesses in the World (WWW) — more than double the number who previously participated. Last school year, those students did volunteer work on campus, at conference congregations and schools, and in the community. That same Spirit moved a senior girl in our international program on the day before graduation to ask to be baptized. She said “I can’t leave here without being baptized.” Tears of joy streamed down her face while she confessed her faith. I am convinced that the same Spirit moved God’s people to support this ministry with more than $2.86 million in gifts this year. More than $400,000 of that came from the WLHS Foundation through estate gifts. Plus, 517 new friends stepped forward to give their first gift to the school last year! It couldn’t happen without such incredible commitment from alumni and friends like you.

WLHS Grads Help Lead School Meet Bret Hopf (’96) Assistant Principal
Guided by Faith Meet C.L. Whiteside (‘06) Assistant Principal
Mr. Bret Hopf, an alum who married his high school sweetheart, is starting his fifth year as assistant principal. Hopf graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran College Mr. Hopf with a degree in education, Assistant Principal taught eighth grade at St. Marcus Lutheran School for 10 years and served as the dean for three years. “I feel blessed to be back at Wisco. I work with an amazing staff that’s united in Christ and is passionate about education,” says Hopf. Hopf and his wife, CiCi (Grayson ’96), have three children — two of whom are at WLHS. Their oldest, Isaiah, is a sophomore, and their daughter, Jaiah, is a freshman. The Hopf family attends St. Marcus Lutheran Church.
New Viking Christian Leaders Award Assistant principals Mr. Hopf and Mr. Whiteside have established a program to recognize two student leaders each month. “We want to celebrate students who exemplify Christ-centered leadership and academic responsibility and contribute to the culture of success at WLHS,” explains Hopf.

Whiteside earned his degree in physical education from the University of Wisconsin– Steven’s Point where he also played football.
“By becoming a teacher, I realized I could be a role model and have a significant impact on students and their future,” says Whiteside. Whiteside was an accomplished athlete during his high school years and continues to be heavily involved in WLHS athletics. He’s a member of Garden Homes Lutheran Church where he’s worshiped since he was five years old.

Tours and Apprenticeships: WLHS students tour local employers, including Argon Industries, Ultra Tool, and Kinetic. After taking a tour of Argon as part of Metals class, Rafael Cano-Telles (’18) secured a year-long apprenticeship with the company. “I work to help all students discover their God-given talents. When their talents are in STEM, I point out possible college and career options to help them reach their goals. If a student’s gifts and talents are outside of STEM, I encourage them in those areas,” James Hahm (‘93), WLHS Trade & Technology department coordinator.

Christian Character Building Through Sports Varsity Girls Volleyball – Coach Dave Baacke (‘84)

Humility, intensity and mental toughness – those are our core values. The girls developed them and selected words that spell out HIM because we do it “with HIM, for HIM.”
As a coach, I explain that becoming a better team is a process and building your faith life is also a process. In both areas, you learn from your mistakes and grow because of them. I take the life-long view of: “How am I helping prepare these girls for a future where they continue to walk with Jesus?”
WLHS Record Holder
Annie Rasmussen (‘16) was a stand-out volleyball player during her years at WLHS. She holds the record for all-time digs (2,022) and single-season digs (667) and received a scholarship to play at the University of Rassmussen (‘16) South Dakota. Rasmussen is a junior majoring in kinesiology and sports science.
“With Coach Baacke (’84), we had a routine before games. We’d pray together and then sing a hymn,” says Rasmussen. “We always knew we weren’t just representing Wisco. We were representing God with how we played and how we showed respect to our competitors.” Rasmussen has fond memories of her days at WLHS.
For the second year in a row, the Lady Vikings earned a Regional Championship. The team also won the Woodland Conference tournament to clinch the West Division title.
To prepare for their post-season play, the girls volleyball team got a visit from San Diego Padre’s catcher, AJ Ellis. Ellis discussed servant leadership, teamwork, mental toughness, and work ethic. Lady Viking volleyball team members commented, “it reminded us to be humble even when we have success,” “it really helped to put things into perspective,” and “it was great to hear these things from someone who has played at the highest level.” 8

“High school isn’t always an easy time but I made a lot of good friends who I still talk to. The WLHS teachers also made a difference. They wanted to make a connection with you and help you however they could,” says Rasmussen.
University Volleyball Coach Coincidentally, Rasmussen is coached by a WLHS grad. Since 2014, Leanne (Felsing) Williamson (‘04) has led the volleyball program at the University of South Dakota. In just her third season, Williamson earned Summit Williamson (‘04) League Coach of the Year honors after her Coyotes captured the program’s first conference title in history. For the past three summers, Williamson has returned to WLHS to conduct a skills camp. “The camp is an opportunity for Leanne to come back, help develop the student athletes at WLHS, and give back to her alma mater,” says Baacke.
Academics 53 seniors were inducted into the National Honor Society (NHS). Membership in the WLHS chapter requires a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 and a demonstrated record of participation in school activities, service to others, and character. Junior Sydney Nath attended the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists annual congress in June at UMass Lowell in Boston. The gathering is an honors-only program for high school students who want to become physicians or go into medical research. Mr. Joshua Nelson’s AP Chemistry class spent a morning at Wisconsin Lutheran College’s Science Laboratory to determine the percentage of copper in brass. Giving students the experience of using a college laboratory helps prepare them for college and allows them to explore vocation options.

Students in Ceramics 1 and Advanced Ceramics made 30 bowls for Milwaukee Empty Bowls. WLHS has been creating pieces for the fundraising event for more than a decade.
Co-curriculars WLHS teachers Mr. Ned Goede and Mr. Kurt Seeger were honored by the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association for their contributions to education-based athletics.
Senior Senobe Blathers was selected as a guest artist for the Wisconsin State Fair Young People’s Art Exhibit and was recognized with an award for the ceramic bowl she created. Junior Ashanti Weeks was invited by ArtWorks to lend her artistic talents to a community art project — painting murals on storm basins in Milwaukee’s Garden Homes neighborhood.
School News WLHS reached the highest level of accreditation status from all three organizations that evaluated the school: National Council of Private School Accreditation – Exemplary Status, WELS School Accreditation (WELSSA) – Exemplary Status, and Wisconsin Religious and Independent Schools Accreditation – Member Status. To achieve exemplary status from WELSSA, WLHS was evaluated on 285 standards in eleven different categories. Of those, 94 standards are “starred” which means they must be fully met to receive renewal. WLHS fully met the starred standards at 100% and all others at 95%.
The boys cross country team advanced to the WIAA State Meet for the 10th straight year and finished in fourth place. This is the seventh time in the past eight years that the team finished in the top four. Senior Jared Denk (pictured center) ran to a fourth place finish and earned All-state Honors. GUIDED BY FAITH. Theology Teacher & Assistant JV Boys Soccer & Varsity Girls Soccer Coach Pastor Butler comes to WLHS from Manassas, Va., where he led Bethlehem Lutheran Church for 15 years. Prior to that, he served at Grace Lutheran Church in Lake Cypress Springs, Pastor Butler Texas. He is married to Wisco alum Sara Kleist (’93). Math Teacher & JV Volleyball Coach Mrs. Cousins has lived on both coasts, having taught at Flagler County Schools in Palm Coast, Fla., San Bernardino City Unified Schools in Calif., and Volusia County Schools in Daytona Beach. Cousins graduated from Bethune–Cookman University Mrs. Cousins in Daytona Beach in 2004 with a bachelor’s of science degree. The Cousins family worships at Grace, Milwaukee.

Walz graduated from MLC in 2001 and earned his master’s degree in Curriculum Mr. Walz (‘96) and Instruction from the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee in 2007. The Walz family worships at St. Paul, Muskego.
Mrs. Olya Elertson was one of just 17 German teachers in North America selected for a scholarship through the Goethe-Institut. The six-week professional development workshop included four weeks of online coursework and two weeks in Munich.

Ms. Marilyn Bond currently teaches ceramics and painting but has held many roles during her 25 years at WLHS. Bond earned a master’s degree in Visual Studies from Cardinal Stritch University and has a bachelor’s in Art History from the University of Wisconsin— Whitewater. Dr. Kenneth Fisher has served as president of WLHS since 2012 and was director of mission advancement prior to that. From 1998-2011, he was senior pastor at Riven Savior, Milwaukee, where he helped champion the development of a grade school. Fisher recently earned his doctor of ministry degree from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (TEDS) in Deerfield, Ill..
Mr. James Hahm (‘93), trade and technology department coordinator, participated in an AP Summer Institute in preparation for teaching AP Physics this school year. He also attended an ASM Materials Camp to broaden his knowledge of chemistry and engineering.

Victor Rose (’56) and his wife, Darlene, will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on March 28, 2019. Jim Johnson (’70) retired from WLHS as chief development officer in September 2018. During his high school years, Jim was student body president, co-captain of the varsity football team, and a wrestler. Prior to joining WLHS, he helped launch Time of Grace and was executive director and president for 11 years. Kristin Zuberbier (’86) married Jim Schlevensky (’87) on August 4, 2018. The wedding party included WLHS alumni: Char Schoch (‘80), Karl Zuberbier (‘81), Tom Zuberbier (‘90), David Schlevensky (‘91), and Eric Schlevensky (‘91). Laura (Nordness) Schnellbaecher (’93) and her husband, Mark, were blessed with a daughter, Greta Joyce, on March 1, 2017. Greta joins older siblings Alex Paffenroth (‘21) and Eric Schnellbaecher (3). Emily Kratz (’97) completed the Marathon Des Sables, a 25-kilometer foot race through the Sahara desert. As a participant, Emily had to carry her own backpack containing food, sleeping gear, and other materials. Emily completed the race in six days and was a top 10 female finisher. Trish (Kiefer) Beatty (‘94) was inducted into the Wisconsin Racquetball Association’s Hall of Fame during the Wisconsin State Singles Championship on March 3, 2018.

Lindsey (Bartz) Dausel (’00) and her husband, Aaron, were blessed with a son, Corbin Viggo, on May 15, 2018. Corbin joins older siblings Aubrey (9) and Colton (7). Lindsey is a K4 teacher at Christ-St. Peter Lutheran School, Milwaukee, and Aaron is an electrician.
Josh Schoof (’01) and his wife, Ashley, were blessed with a son, Micah, on June 4, 2018. Micah joins older siblings Eli (8), Malachi (6), and Jonah (2). Amanda (Mathwig) Hansen (’02) and her husband, Phil Hansen (’03), were blessed with a daughter, Ellie, on August 26, 2017. Ellie joins older siblings Addison (8) and Roman (7). Phil is a project manager at Roman Electric and realtor with Keller Williams. Cody Fitzwilliams (’03) married Andrea Pico on January 21, 2017. The couple met when Cody was visiting his classmate Robert Buelow (‘03) in Los Angeles. The wedding party included WLHS alumni: Benjamin (‘05) and Lisa (Krueger) Derouin (‘05). On July 22, 2018, the couple was blessed with a son, Benjamin Isaiah. Cody works for GE Healthcare as a clinical product surveillance specialist. Andrea has a bachelor’s degree in commercial engineering and is currently studying English and writing at Waukesha County Technical College. Emily (Kleist) Jiles (’03) and her husband, Lewis, were blessed with a daughter, Ryann Johanna, on June 1, 2018. Ryann joins big sisters Kyla (4) and Zoey (2). Emily currently serves at WLHS as the guidance office director. Kimberly Michaels (’04) married Steve Sorenson on May 5, 2018. Kimberly is an anesthesia technician at Froedtert Hospital and Steve is an auto body technician at Abbra Auto Body.
Jaime (Steinbrecher) Drewitz (’05) and her husband, Matthew, were blessed with a daughter, Elnora Gwendolyn, on December 22, 2017. Elnora joins older sister Johanna (3). Jaime is a first grade teacher at St. Jacobi Lutheran School, Greenfield, and Matthew is an accountant in Mundelein, Ill. Jaime is a second-generation Wisco grad. Her father, Mark Steinbrecher (’72), passed away in 2015.

Charlene (Evers) Chernohorsky (’07) and Adam Chernohorsky (’07) were blessed with a son, Charlie James, on July 2, 2018. Charlie joins older siblings Annabelle (3) and Lincoln (2). Adam is a project manager at J&J Contractors. Kelly Horn (’07) married Adam Bregman on February 27, 2018. The wedding party included WLHS alumni: Shannon (Horn) Robinson (’00), Kent Horn (’02), and Ashley (Christophersen) Bakke (’07). They currently live in Denver but plan to return to the Milwaukee area in 2019. Erica Purifoy (’07) married Sedrick Moore on October 7, 2017. Dana Robison (’07) was part of the bridal party. Erica recently graduated with a degree in criminal justice and Sedrick has his own home improvement business. The couple live in Waukegan, Ill. Rachel Yehle (’10) married Mark Moyle on August 27, 2016. The bridal party included WLHS alumni: Jordan Yehle (‘08), Leah Yehle (‘13), Andrew Yehle (‘14), Kait Marquardt (’10), and Dylan Abelt (’09). Eric Zeitler (’10) and his wife, Annie, were blessed with a son, Koen, on August 22, 2018. Annie is the cheerleading coach at WLHS.
Sisters Tabitha Weber (’11) and Becca Weber (’13) moved to Doral, Fla., to work for Divine Savior Ministries. Tabitha is a marketing coordinator and Becca is a first grade teacher.
Alex Aufdemberge (’11) married Lita Booker on November 26, 2017. Pastor Mark Aufdemberge, Alex’s dad, performed the ceremony and WLHS teacher Mrs. Braun was there to assist as her husband played the organ and her daughter Hannah (’05) played the violin. Brother Graeme Aufdemberge (’16) was the best man while sister Lydia (’21) was a junior bridesmaid. In May, Alex graduated from Concordia University Mequon with his doctorate in pharmacy. He currently works as a pharmacist at Prescriptions Plus, an assisted living pharmacy in West Allis. The couple currently lives in Oak Creek while Lita finishes her doctorate. Andrew Flegel (’12) and his wife, Sarah, were blessed with a daughter, Alannah, on July 2, 2018. Andrew is a special education teacher and football and baseball coach at Oak Creek West Middle School. The family resides in Wauwatosa. Nicole Gawel (‘13) married Joshua McNeil (’12) on July 21, 2018. “Throughout its 115-year history, WLHS has been blessed by hundreds of committed alumni, family, and friends who’ve recognized the value of a Christian high school education and invested in God’s ‘big agenda’ by making a planned gift. It is a critical job for the Foundation board to steward and grow the funds so that it will be possible for more students to experience a quality Christ-centered education at WLHS,” says Kris Metzger (’72), executive director, WLHS Foundation. For the 2108-19 school year, the Foundation provided WLHS with $459,334.

13 different scholarships have been established by former faculty members or started by an individual to honor their service.
In fact, two of the largest gifts ever given to WLHS were made by faculty members — Walter Drost and Ron (and Carol) Unke — to fund their scholarships.
New Faculty Scholarship Established One of the newest faculty scholarships is the LB Kolander Scholarship (the “L” is for Luther and “B” is for Bernice). Scores of students will remember Luther since he taught mathematics and coached baseball at LHS and WLHS from 1945-1988 and Bernice was a faithful WLHS volunteer. Luther Kolander

When asked why he decided to create the LB Kolander Scholarship Luther answered: “Bernice and I wanted to give more young people the opportunity to attend WLHS. The teenage years are trying — students are being challenged in many ways, and at the same time they are trying to get ‘wings to fly.’ Where better to be than in this Christian incubator?”

Flag Blessing Ceremony During morning chapel, Dr. Ken Fisher blessed the flags carried in by new students Maria (‘19) (pictured left) from Brazil and Relja (‘20) (pictured right) from Malta. 32 flags now hang in the WLHS Atrium to represent the countries from which we’ve had or now have students attending. They are a reminder that WLHS is a Great Commission school.
