Message from the Principal Welcome to the 2016-17 school year. While no one knows the future, we like to say that every day we have the privilege of seeing the future–in the faces of our students who will be the next generation of doctors, bus drivers, accountants, electricians, teachers, pastors, and government officials, to name just a few paths. Thank you, parents, for entrusting your children’s educations to us. What do we see when we look at our students? We ask God to help us see first and foremost in every student a soul. Of course, your child’s soul is invisible so we can’t literally see it, yet we know the soul is that part of him or her that is eternal. “Seeing the soul” is a way we keep in mind that every one of our students is a person for whom Jesus Christ sacrificed his life to atone for their sins. Every student is precious to their Lord and so must also be precious to us. Since faith in Jesus will one day be the sole criterion for entrance into heaven, we take seriously the nurturing of that faith in every student. That perspective will govern our interactions with students in all circumstances, whether we are instructing them, coaching them, disciplining them, counseling them or leading them in some way. Sinners ourselves, we will make mistakes, and we will be grateful for yours and their forgiveness. Our aim, however, is to return to that “see the soul” perspective–the way God has always seen us. First Days of School Freshman Orientation Day Wednesday, August 17 This is considered a school day for freshmen, so attendance is mandatory. WLHS Board of Directors
The day’s activities begin promptly at 7:45 A.M. and conclude at 1:00 P.M. Students are encouraged to arrive 10–15 minutes before the actual starting time. Lunch (no cost) will be provided for all students.

Parent Nights Parents are encouraged to attend the Parent Nights coming up in September. The Guidance Department of WLHS makes a determined effort to provide programs that are of relevance for our parents. Responses from parents in previous years have been highly positive, especially with our “walk through your child’s day” programs.

Bus Information
WLHS Clothing for Sale
Wisconsin Lutheran High School does not provide yellow school bus service. Students have to arrange their own way to school via city bus, automobiles, carpooling, etc.
WLHS clothing is available at all home athletic contests and daily through the Athletic Office.
Milwaukee County Transit has a city bus stop directly in front of our high school for our students to use during the school year.
Much more Wisco Wear is available on-line at the Sideline School Store. We are teaming with Lids, a national company with local reps, to make this store accessible.
Wisconsin Lutheran High School does not provide city bus tickets. For information on purchasing bus tickets or bus passes, please contact the Milwaukee County Transit System at (414)344-4550.
Each individual order is processed as it is received and shipped directly to the person who orders. As you explore the shop, you will see kids items, alumni items, and parent and grandparent items as well. Other items are clothing for choir, band, AP classes, student council, and on and on.

Support Your Vikings!
Calculator Rental Program The Math Department requires all junior and senior level math students, as well as freshman and sophomore students in “A” sections, to have a graphing calculator.

There are approximately 80 parking spaces available in our main lot for our students. They are marked with large yellow circles. Students may use these spaces on a first- come, first-served basis.
•
In addition to the main parking lot, there are approximately 40 parking spaces available in the south lot located directly behind the water tower. This lot has security cameras viewing it.
•
When these spaces are filled, students will need to park on the street. If students park on the street, they should park on east 84th Street or Honey Creek Parkway. They should not park in Pick ‘n Save’s lot or in the Ravenswood neighborhood.
Please note: Students who park in faculty, visitor, fire lane, or other non-designated areas are subject to disciplinary action (Saturday detentions). The school will not assume liability or responsibility for damages to an auto or theft of an automobile or its contents parked in the school lots or streets around school. Students speeding or driving recklessly on school grounds will be subject to disciplinary action and the loss of parking privileges. Vehicles are not to be entered or sat on during the school day, including lunch.
The WISCO School Store operates a calculator rental program. Students can rent a TI-84 calculator for a yearly rental fee of $30. This calculator can also be used for taking ACT and SAT tests. Calculators will be available at the parent information meetings in August as well as during the school year from the School Store. Questions about the program should be directed to Jason Goede, School Store Coordinator, at jason.goede@wlhs.org.
All vehicles that are brought to school should be registered with us each year. Forms for that purpose can be filled out at the Parent Information Meetings in August, or you can get a form from the receptionist. –4–

No cash is accepted in the serving lines. Money must be deposited into the student’s account ahead of time. Students then enter their ID number on a keypad to access their funds and pay for their lunch.

New This Year: After a successful trial period last year, Taher is pleased to announce we will continue the “nutrition break”. As an extension of breakfast, Taher will serve in the upstairs and lower lobbies between the pass from 1st hour to homeroom. Additionally, we will serve in 1st through 3rd commons. On days there is no homeroom there will not be service.

Welcome We welcome new faculty/staff members who are beginning their service to WLHS this school year. Phil Huebner is our Campus pastor who most recently served Christ the King Lutheran Church, Palm Coast, Florida. In addition to teaching religion classes, Pastor Huebner will coach football, recruit students for public ministry, and do evangelism work with students and their families who do not have a church home. He is married to Becky (see below); both are WLHS alums, and they have two children.

Peter Iles is our Developer of Instructional Technology who most recently served a similar position with the Wauwatosa School District. In addition to teaching history classes, Mr. Iles will help our teachers apply technology to their instruction and coach baseball. He is married to Rebecca, and they have three children. Kristine Metzger is our WLHS Foundation Executive Director who most recently served in the development office at Wisconsin Lutheran College. Mrs. Metzger will oversee the WLHS Foundation’s growth and distribution. She is married to Hans; both are WLHS alums, and they have four children (all WLHS graduates) and seven grandchildren. The Metzgers are members at St. Marcus.

Kathryn Luebke is a teacher in our math department who most recently taught math at Rufus King High School in Milwaukee. In addition to teaching math classes, Mrs. Luebke will coach in our girls’ basketball program. She is married to Chris, and they have seven children. The Luebkes are members at St. Lucas.
Academic Expansion Beginning this fall, WLHS is implementing new initiatives designed to create academic advantages for its students.
Becky Huebner is a teacher in our English department who most recently directed the early childhood learning center at Christ the King School, Palm Coast, Florida. In addition to teaching freshman English, Mrs. Huebner will also coach in girls basketball and track. The Huebners attend Grace Lutheran in Milwaukee.
The significant changes this school year include: • High school credit for qualified 7th-8th grade coursework • Dual credit courses with Bethany Lutheran College and Wisconsin Lutheran College (WLC) . Incoming freshman can get a jump start on earning high school credits for Algebra 1, Geometry, Latin 1, German 1 and Spanish 1 classes by meeting specific test and grade criteria. Once at WLHS, students can simultaneously accumulate high school and college credits from WLC and Bethany. The credits will be accepted by each individual institution and can transfer to most other colleges and universities. –6–

PARENT INVOLVEMENT OPPORTUNITIES The WLHS Athletic Department provides a variety of ways in which parents may become more actively involved in our support programs. Parent Handbook This year’s school handbook and calendar are once again included in the Student Planner. Planners will be distributed to students on the first day of school. The Student Handbook has also been included in the summer packet that was mailed to you. Parents, I encourage you to spend time reading through the policy section of the Handbook, acquainting yourself with our school’s policies and procedures. Your cooperation in knowing and supporting the policies and procedures of our high school, as printed in the Student Handbook, underscores our school–home partnership.

The Basics for Success 1.
Students need to attend school. They need to be in class from the start. Absenteeism and tardiness are key contributing factors to student failure.
2.
Students need to participate in class and do the work. All the excellent teaching provided a student does little good if the student does not cooperate in the learning process.
3.
Students need to prioritize. Students who balance schoolwork with fun activities simply have a major edge on achieving success. When having fun is the priority, failure often results.
4.
Students’ excuses for failing to do their “job” of getting educated are not accepted. How many people regret that they did not use the opportunities afforded them to gain success through education? They now realize they have no excuse for wasting these opportunities and the resulting consequences in their adult lives.
