These incredible Field Trips are offered by the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin!

We are a non-profit dedicated to conserving Wisconsin’s most cherished lands, waters, and wildlife. We also connect generations to Wisconsin’s natural wonders through our Field Trip program.

This year will be our largest line-up of Field Trips ever! So bring a friend, child, or grandchild and join us in the field with expert leaders to explore the best of Wisconsin.

Tips for using our online registration system Cart-like experience

We use Active.com for our registration platform, which offers the benefit of securing trips as yours the moment you add them to your cart. Register online for Field Trips at WisConservation.org. The registration link will appear on April 4 at noon.

Already know your Field Trip number? Find it faster in our online registration system by using the number index (on left of screen) or switching to the calendar view.

Birthdays required

You will be asked for your (and guests’) birthday during registration. If you don’t know an adult guest’s birthday, just enter 01/01/2000. Children should enter their real birthday (or something close to it).

Credit card on file

Please consider opting to keep your credit card number on file. This enables us to easily add you from a waiting list or make your requested trip changes.

We host an annual Photo Contest in autumn, with a special category for “Best Photo Taken on a Field Trip.” So, remember to take some good photos on your Field Trips and don’t miss out on the opportunity to be the next prize winner!

2 Not a current member? Go to WisConservation.org and click on

“Become a Member” to join the Foundation with a donation of $25 or greater.

3 Find your member code.

• Existing

members will find their member code on the back cover of this booklet.

Note: if there is not a member code on the back of this booklet you will need to renew or become a member before registration.

• New and renewing members will receive a member code in their membership payment confirmation email.

4 Have the names, contact information, and birthdays of all members in your party handy for when you register.

5 Register online at: WisConservation.org BEGINNING APRIL 4 AT NOON. No phone or email registrations accepted.

Registration facts • There is a limit of four trips per person for your initial registration from April 1–15.

• Wait-listed trips do NOT count toward your initial four-trip limit.

• Starting April 15, you may register for additional trips (beyond your initial four) as space allows.

Field Trip Safety Guidelines for 2022 2022 continues to be a dynamic situation with COVID, and we will update our safety guidelines as needed throughout the season. Keep up to date on current safety guidelines and policies here: WisConservation.org/COVID-19 We anticipate opening the season with these safety guidelines: • Small group sizes with social distancing.

• Indoor trips (see index at right): Face masks may be required.* • Outdoor trips: Face masks are optional, though we ask that you bring one to wear in times when social distancing is not possible.* • If we cancel a trip due to COVID, your registration fees will be refunded upon request. *Face masks may be required on some Field Trips due to leader preference or local/facility policies, to be determined closer to date of trip.

Expanding opportunities to get in the field We are dedicated to expanding our opportunities for people with various physical abilities to join us out in the field. If you, a family member, or a friend have mobility issues, we have several options:

Reserve an outdoor all-terrain wheelchair. Our friends at Access Ability Wisconsin (AAW) have outdoor all-terrain wheelchairs available to reserve and use free of charge at several locations throughout the state. It is possible to reserve an outdoor wheelchair from AAW and tow it via trailer (provided) to other locations for use—on your own outdoor excursion, or on a Field Trip (contact us to discuss options). 1. Ancient Evidence: Cranberry Creek Mound Group SNA Visit one of the largest, best preserved mound complexes in the upper Midwest! Cranberry Creek Mound SNA has excellent examples of conical, linear, oval and effigy mounds built by Native Americans of the Woodland period, ca.

4. Archaeology at Silver Mound

ote: very challenging hike with steep terrain, N loose rocks and off-trail. A distinctive flint stone was mined at Silver Mound by Native Americans for at least 13,000 years and chipped into spear tips, knives, and tools.

Hidden in the modern forest are hundreds of ancient quarry pits and shelters, some with rock carvings and paintings. Visit these relics of the past and learn the craft of flintknapping.

2. Quackers on Quincy: Exploring Wetlands & Returning Birdlife

E xplore the vast network of sedge meadows and waterways of Quincy Bluff SNA in search of returning spring birdlife. Learn about recent wetland restorations as we glimpse birds establishing their territories, and those migrating through. Search for furbearers that call this area home. No bathrooms.

5. Terrell’s Island: Migration Magnificence

B ehold spectacular views of migrating birds and learn about wetland ecology as we venture on a 4-mile hike around the breakwall of Terrell’s Island on the southern shore of Lake Butte des Morts. 3. Amphibians & Reptiles of North Kettle Moraine

6 6. Spruce Grouse in the Boreal Forest ote: uneven terrain and wet conditions.

N Spruce grouse and boreal forests are rarities in Wisconsin, and this trip has both! Hike off-trail through balsam firs to witness the rarely seen courtship displays of spruce grouse. Enjoy this exclusive chance to see one of the state’s most unique, secretive, and threatened birds.

7. Effigy Mounds at Nitschke Mounds Park

S ee one of the best surviving examples of the Mound Builders culture that once occupied Wisconsin. Just west of the Horicon Marsh, Nitschke Mounds Park contains 39 preserved animal effigy, conical, and linear mounds believed to have been constructed around 8001100 AD. 12. Sunset, Sights & Sounds at Pheasant Branch Conservancy

Hike to the top of Frederick’s Hill for a commanding sunset view of the prairie, marsh, and watershed below. Watch birds and wildlife circling freshwater springs and blooming grasslands. Listen to the serenade of snipes and woodcocks in the dusky twilight. Learn history, restoration, and management of this cherished urban oasis.

13. Birding Hike at Beaver Creek Hemlocks

16. Catching the Peak: Migratory Bird Banding

The annual Neotropical migration of millions of birds is one of the world’s most aweinspiring phenomenon. Have you ever used eBird? Do you know what a hotspot is? Whether you’re a new or experienced birder, learn to get the most out of the eBird app where bird observations are reported and shared. Begin at the Aldo Leopold Nature Center to talk bird ID basics and how to use the eBird and Merlin Bird ID apps. Then caravan to Olin/Turville Point for more birding fun.
