Join the Natural Resources Foundation on a Field Trip!

With 210 trips in the line-up there’s something to pique everyone’s interest, for all ages and abilities. So bring a friend, child, or grandchild and join us in the field with expert leaders to explore the best of Wisconsin and celebrate the 25th anniversary of our Field Trip program.

Steps to register for Field Trips:

1. You must be, or become, a member of the Foundation to register for Field Trips* 2. Members: find your member-code on the back cover of this booklet. Note, only current members have a member-code printed. If there is not a member-code on the back of this booklet, you will need to renew or become a member before or during Field Trip registration.* 3. Register online at: WisConservation.org Registration at a glance: • You must be a member of the Foundation to register for Field Trips. See page 56 for more registration details.

• Some trips fill VERY quickly!

Register online for the most current trip availability. No phone or mail registrations.

• Please limit your initial registration to 4 trips. After April 15, you may add more trips to your registration.

• You may register up to 5 guests.

• O nly register for one canoe/kayak trip per person due to high demand.

• P lease don’t register for trips you have done in the past.

• A ll fees are non-refundable if you cancel your registration.

Children on trips: “Family Friendly” trips are most suitable for children of the age recommendation listed, and thus child’s fees are noted. Children are welcome on all trips for $10 less than the adult fee listed, and must be accompanied by adults.

When can I register?

• March 28 at NOON – Online registration opens for current and renewing members.

• April 5 – Registration opens to the general public. Anyone can easily become a member at the $25 level during online Field Trip registration.

Symbols index Family Friendly One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is an appreciation for nature. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Age recommendations are listed for each trip. Childfriendly trips are identified with this symbol: SNAs Experience Wisconsin’s precious wilderness gems, our State Natural Areas (SNAs), guided by the conservationists who help protect them. All of our SNA trips are indicated with this symbol: Birds Learn the science of bird conservation by banding, surveying, and photographing Wisconsin’s many birds. When you register online, things will look a bit different from previous years. We heard from many members that you wanted a more cart-like experience, and we listened!

About 70% of spaces on Field Trips are filled in the first few hours opening day of registration (some trips fill within minutes!), and the new online system is optimized for easy use and high traffic. It secures your Field Trip spaces the moment you add them to your cart, so you can then relax and take your time entering guests’ names and contact information.

What’s different this year?

You will be asked for your (and your guests’) birthdays.

Yes, it is a bit quirky, but just a part of this particular registration software. If you do not know an adult guest’s birthday, you can just enter 01/01/2000. Children should enter their real birthday (or something close to it). Please know that we never share your personal information and are committed to protecting your privacy.

Enter member-codes during check-out.

If you are a member, you will not need to enter your member-code until the checkout process when you are asked “Are you a Foundation member?” (Note: Use the same member-code for both you and your guests) If you are a Foundation member, your member-code is printed on the back of this booklet. If you just became a member online your code will be in your donation confirmation email.

Celebrating 25 years of AMAZING ADVENTURES In 1993, when we piloted three Field Trips, we never dreamed our fledgling Field Trip Program would grow to offer 2,600 more Field Trips and engage nearly 50,000 attendees in a quarter century’s worth of exploring Wisconsin’s lands, waters, and wildlife. With our members’ dedicated support and the contributions of amazing leaders, the Field Trip Program has become a cornerstone of the Foundation’s work. The Field Trip Program is at the heart of our mission to connect generations to the wonders of Wisconsin’s lands, waters, and wildlife.

Together, we have visited all 72 counties in Wisconsin, hiked and paddled for many thousands of miles, and seen and banded hundreds of warblers, owls, swans, elk, and even tagged butterflies. We hope you continue to get out in the field with us, this year and for another 25 years—or more!

Our Belief

We believe that nature has inherent value and that people have the ability to make a difference.

Our Mission The Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin provides sustainable funding for Wisconsin’s most imperiled species and public lands, while helping citizens connect with our state’s unique natural places.

Our Impact Wisconsin wouldn’t be the same without the Natural Resources Foundation. Since 1986, the Foundation has: • Contributed nearly $7 million to public and private conservation efforts to protect the lands, waters, and wildlife of Wisconsin; • Developed an active membership of nearly 5,000 families who are dedicated to Wisconsin’s natural heritage and conservation; • Worked with private donors to create the Wisconsin Conservation Endowment, which currently includes nearly $7 million in assets that permanently conserve lands, protect wildlife, and promote conservation; • Coordinated more than 2,600 Field Trips, where close to 50,000 attendees explored natural wonders in all counties of Wisconsin; • Supported more than 620 grassroots conservation projects in every county of the state through grantmaking efforts; • I n partnership with the Department of Natural Resources, grown the Cherish Wisconsin Outdoors Fund to nearly $500,000. This public endowment is dedicated to the care and management of public lands in Wisconsin and funded through small donations made by hunters, anglers, and campers when purchasing their annual licenses. Venture at dusk to hike the wetlands and ponds of the UW Arboretum in search of frogs.

10. Geology & Ecology of Hagar Mountain SNA

Note: Adventurous 4-mile off-trail hike in rugged terrain. Much of Northeastern Wisconsin is covered by 100-foot thick layers of flat glacial till, but Hagar Mountain SNA is one exception! Marvel at 60-foot cliffs of granite, rhyolite, and volcanic formations over a billion years old. Learn its unique geologic history, see waterfalls, and enjoy a view from the top.

BELIZE and GUATEMALA: NATURE, CONSERVATION AND NEOTROPICAL BIRDS December 1-8, 2018 Within the Mayan ruins, fertile lagoons, and mountainous terrain of Belize and Guatemala, more than 1,300 birds can be found in protected areas of these two neotropical countries.

The ancient civilizations that once thrived here may no longer be present today, but an abundance of vibrant wildlife still remains.

Steps to register for Field Trips:

1. You must be, or become, a member of the Foundation to register for Field Trips* 2. Members: find your member-code on the back cover of this booklet. Note, only current members have a member-code printed. If there is not a member-code on the back of this booklet, you will need to renew or become a member before or during Field Trip registration. See below* 3. Register online at: WisConservation.org

When can you register for Field Trips?

• Current and renewing members may register starting at NOON on March 28 using the member-code found on the back of this booklet • Not already a member of the Foundation? See below* * Not already a member?

You have two registration and membership options: • Before April 5: Go to WisConservation.org and click on “Become a member” to join the Foundation at the $25 or greater level. Your payment confirmation email will include a member-code to enjoy Early Bird Field Trip registration opening Wednesday, March 28.

• After April 5: Click “No, I am not yet a member” during your online registration and a $25 membership donation will be added to your cart.

Tips for choosing trips:

• You may register for up to four trips, and bring up to five guests. After April 15 you may add additional trips to your registration.

• Trip title colors indicate their physical activity ratings. Please double-check if a trip is a good fit for you.

• You may register for only one canoe/kayak trip per person due to high demand.

• Please don’t register for trips you have attended in the past.

Tips for online registration:

• No phone or email registrations accepted.

• Have the names, contact information, and birthdays of all members in your party handy.

• Some trips are popular and fill VERY quickly (some within minutes), have several back-up choices in mind.

• If a trip is full, consider the waiting list (this will be an option during online registration). We often call or email wait-listers to go on trips!

• See pages 2-3 for more online registration details and instructions.

Important facts:

• All fees are non-refundable if you cancel your registration.

• Trip details, directions, and maps will be emailed to you two weeks before your trip date.

• Field Trips run rain or shine.

• No dogs are allowed on trips.

• There is a $10 processing fee for mail-in registrations, and an additional $10 if you need trip details sent to you via US mail instead of email.

• You will be asked to sign a liability waiver form before you attend our Field Trips.
