With 234 trips in the lineup, there’s something to pique everyone’s interest. Our trips are for all ages and abilities, so bring a friend, child, or grandchild and join us in the field with expert leaders to explore the best of Wisconsin’s natural treasures.

Field Trip Facts

• All fees are non-refundable if you cancel your registration.

• Trip details, directions, and maps will be emailed to you two weeks before your trip date.

• Trips run rain or shine, so dress appropriately for the weather.

• You will be asked to sign a liability waiver when attending our Field Trips.

• No dogs are allowed on our trips.

• You may register for up to four initial trips per person. After April 15 you may add additional trips to your registration.

• Trip title colors indicate their physical activity ratings. Please double-check if a trip is a good fit for you.

• Symbols next to the trip description indicate a special interest. See below for symbol codes.

• Please only register for one canoe/kayak trip per person due to high demand.

One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is an appreciation for nature. All children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Family Friendly trips are most suitable for children of the age recommendations listed, and thus children’s fees are shown. Tips for using our online registration system Cart-like experience Start with adding trips to your cart and selecting the number of spaces/tickets you want for each trip. Field Trips trips are secured as yours the moment you put them into your cart. *Easily find a Field Trip using the calendar view.

Birthdays required

If you registered for Field Trips with us last year, then you already have an account with Active.com (you created during your 2018 registration). Register for 2019 Field Trips using your same email address and password you created during your 2018 registration, and the system will remember your guests and information.

During registration you will be asked for your (and your guests’) birthdays. If you do not know an adult guest’s birthday, you can just enter 01/01/2000. Children should enter their real birthday (or something close to it).

Some of our Field Trips are fundraisers for endowment funds held by NRF that support specific conservation initiatives. These include:

Bird Protection Fund Supports the highest priority conservation needs for Wisconsin’s birds throughout their lifecycle — from their breeding grounds in Wisconsin, to their migratory habitat in Central and South America.

Wisconsin Bat Conservation Fund Provides support for Wisconsin’s statewide bat conservation efforts in perpetuity.

Wisconsin Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Fund Provides ongoing support for conservation, education, research, and monitoring of Wisconsin’s native and vulnerable amphibians and reptiles.

Wisconsin Rare Plant Preservation Fund Protects Wisconsin’s rarest plants and lichens through monitoring, inventorying, and preservation.

1. Migration Magnificence at Terrell’s Island

Behold spectacular views of thousands of migrating birds and learn about wetland ecology as we venture on a 4-mile hike around the breakwall of Terrell’s Island on the southern shore of Lake Butte des Morts. 2. Ancient Evidence: Cranberry Creek Mound Group SNA

Visit one of the largest, best preserved mound complexes in the upper Midwest to marvel at excellent examples of conical, linear, oval and effigy mounds built by Native Americans of the Woodland period, ca. 100800 AD. No bathrooms.

5. Cedarburg Bog SNA: History, Woodcocks & Frogs

3. Making Maple Syrup

Note: off-trail hiking through hilly, steep, and rocky glacial terrain. Board a bus and travel to several locations to hike, explore, and learn about the geologic history and how glaciers shaped various land features of this beautiful and scenic landscape.

9. Amphibians & Reptiles of North Kettle Moraine

Get hands-on to explore the Kellings Lakes as we wade in shallow water and hike prairies in search of rare snakes, salamanders, and frogs. See how biologists capture, ID, and monitor various amphibians and reptiles and learn about their ecology and habitats.

10. Archaeology at Silver Mound

A distinctive flint stone was mined at Silver Mound by Native Americans for at least 13,000 years and chipped into spear tips, knives, and tools. Hidden in the modern forest are hundreds of ancient quarry pits and shelters, some with rock carvings and paintings. Visit these relics of the past and learn the craft of flintknapping.

8. Effigy Mounds at Nitschke Mounds Park

See one of the best surviving examples of the Mound Builders culture that once occupied Wisconsin. Just west of the Horicon Marsh, Nitschke Mounds Park contains 39 preserved animal effigy, conical, and linear mounds believed to have been constructed around

Explore new terrain in environmental literature by reading—and writing—stories that re-imagine traditional approaches to nature writing. Read ~150 pages of select writings in advance. Day-of, gather to discuss readings, explore urban nature in Madison, and put pens to paper! Enjoy guided writing exercises and discover fresh ways of experiencing and expressing your own connection to nature.

12. Ice Age Trail May Day Hike Along the Chippewa River

14. Eagle Banding & Voyager Canoe on the Lower Wisconsin River

Help DNR biologists band eaglets and learn about the eagle monitoring program. Discover the river’s colorful history, ecology, and efforts to keep it wild and scenic. Hike to the top of Frederick’s Hill for a commanding sunset view of the prairie, marsh, and watershed below. Watch birds and wildlife circling freshwater springs and blooming grasslands and listen to the serenade of snipes and woodcocks in the dusky twilight. Paddle four miles of the Upper Wisconsin River in search of the state threatened wood turtle. Learn about turtle ecology, conservation projects, and efforts to improve their numbers in Wisconsin. Twilight inspires a frog chorus at The Ridges Sanctuary! Enjoy a short indoor program to learn about Door County frogs, their life cycles, adaptations, sounds and the DNR frog monitoring program. Traverse forest and field to identify and harvest edible and medicinal plants, as well as learn which should be avoided. The Foundation’s new initiatives The Natural Resources Foundation is dedicated to striving towards a better Wisconsin, and we are moving forward in some exciting new ways.

Environmental Education

Many people feel a strong connection to the outdoors because someone — a teacher, family member, or friend — brought them outside and introduced them to the beauty of the natural world. Having that personal connection to nature is important for the health and well-being of people, communities, and our natural resources.

We are ramping up our support for statewide and local environmental education efforts. Through new grant programs, initiatives, and outreach, we are doing more than ever to make sure the next generation is outdoors and connecting, exploring, and engaging with our natural world.

Diversity in Conservation

It is vitally and increasingly important to consider diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in our changing world. NRF is committed to focusing on DEI to ensure that we continue to make conservation relevant and meaningful to all Wisconsinites. By intentionally embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion in our organization and through our programs, we will ensure that the Natural Resources Foundation staff, board, and members respect and value individual differences, among each other and those we serve, and ultimately will help make the fields of conservation, natural resources protection, and environmental education in Wisconsin more inclusive.

Pollinators

Pollinator populations are declining significantly in Wisconsin and in the U.S., due to habitat loss, pesticide use, and a variety of other factors. NRF is ramping up support for pollinator conservation by funding statewide coordination efforts, funding habitat work at large and local scales, and supporting citizen science programs that can help scientists better understand the declines and inform pollinator conservation efforts.

Wayfarers

NRF’s new program, Wayfarers, connects 20- and 30-somethings to Wisconsin’s natural resources through trips, happy hours, volunteer workdays, and more. By building a peer group of young professionals who care about Wisconsin’s great outdoors, we hope to foster the next generation of stewards. Learn more at WisConservation. org/Wayfarers.
