Flesh & Fuel
One of OUTshine’s most social traditions, Cocktails & Cinema, returns on Monday, October 19, bringing movie lovers together for drinks, conversation and films in both Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach. Paradigm Cinemas will host the Florida premiere of Loves Company, while O Cinema South Beach will showcase the locally produced The Old Man and The Parrot and South Florida shorts Hogar, Brackish and Duke. According to Mark Gilbert, OUTshine executive director, “When our stories were being pushed off screens, out of libraries, and off stages. Telling them wasn't just bold. It was necessary. For 28 years, we have kept the lights on for LGBTQ stories in South Florida and we will continue to stand strong, proud and united. We are not going anywhere.” Loves Company
The festivities begin in Broward on Thursday, October 15, at 7 p.m. with the award-winning historical drama La Bola Negra at Regal Dania Pointe. A Spain-France production directed, co-written and produced by Cannes-winning filmmakers Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi. This film connects the lives of three gay men from different generations through love, loss and an unfinished work by legendary Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca. Featuring an impressive cast that includes Spanish music sensation Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González, Milo Quifes, Lola Dueñas, Julio Torres, Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close. La Bola Negra is both a tribute to Lorca’s artistic legacy and a celebration of queer resilience and self-expression. Following the screening, festivalgoers can continue the evening at an afterparty at 14 North Daiquiri Bar in Dania Pointe. On Saturday, October 17, OUTshine turns the spotlight to its Men’s and Ladies Spotlight Films at Paradigm Cinemas: Gateway Fort Lauderdale. Beginning at 7:15 p.m., the men’s selection, Flesh & Fuel (Du Fioul dans les artères), follows a lonely French truck driver who unexpectedly falls in love with a Polish colleague. Their relationship forces both men to confront the inescapable realities of distance, demanding
The local connection continues Tuesday, October 20, with a sneak preview of The Drive, a documentary centered on Wilton Manors and the colorful community surrounding Wilton Drive. Through personal stories and memorable characters, the film examines a community determined to preserve its identity and sense of belonging amid a changing social and political environment in Florida. At the same time in Miami, audiences can discover the story behind one of entertainment’s most unforgettable performers in Bea Arthur: The Documentary, chronicling the life and career of the celebrated television and theater star and longtime LGBTQ+ ally. PUBLISHER’S CORNER YOUR VOTE COUNTS! Welcome to our September issue! As summer ends and fall will soon arrive, we showcase hot model Donald Montero with dazzling photos by Jorge Freire from Photo Studio Miami. In Our Community, we preview the Fall Edition OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival, which will showcase over 20 international, North American and East Coast premieres. Dining Delicious is about Pao at the Faena Miami Beach where you can dine on James Beard Foundation award-winning chef Paul Qui’s celebrated modern Asian cuisine in a gorgeous setting. Our photo album is from Turnabout 2026 at TWIST — always a very fun night to check out the best outfits by the ‘gals.’ This year, fall also brings us the upcoming November elections. It is very important for all eligible voters to exercise their sacred right to vote. Whether you vote on Election Day in person, send your ballot by mail, or choose to drop off your ballot in the designated election boxes, it is crucial that you do so. A lot is happening in our country, our economy, and with our allies and our enemies. Your vote will help decide what the future has in store for the United States and the world because your elected officials in the Senate and the House of Representatives will decide many key issues that affect our lives. We live in a democracy that needs to be protected by representatives who respect our laws and our Constitution. You can choose those representatives at the national, state and local level when you vote. Our nation’s founding fathers built a democracy based on checks and balances between the three branches of government, the Legislative branch, the Executive branch, and the Judicial branch. The system of government they created did not include an all-powerful king for a reason. As James Madison said, “An elective despotism was not the government we fought for; but one in which the powers of government should be so divided and balanced among the several bodies of magistracy as that no one could transcend their legal limits without being effectually checked and restrained by the others.” In the past, when the system has been out of balance, the citizens of this nation have chosen to elect people who have brought it back into balance. Remember this when you decide who to vote for and why the founding fathers felt it was so important to prevent one single man or woman to rule the United States like a monarch who does whatever they want despite the harm it can bring to its citizens and other nations. Cheers,

DONALD MONTERO
Rafa Carvajal: Where are you from, and where do you live? Donald Montero: I’m originally from the Dominican Republic, and I currently live in Miami, Florida. Miami has been a huge part of my journey because it’s where I’ve been able to grow both personally and professionally, especially through modeling, fitness, and entertainment.

RC: How did you get started in modeling, and what do you enjoy most about modeling for photography? DM: I got started in modeling through my interest in fitness and fashion. I’ve always enjoyed being in front of the camera, but modeling became something much bigger for me once I started working with different photographers, brands, and agencies. I’ve had the opportunity to work with brands like Fenty, Savage X Fenty, Fila, Rufskin, and Gatorade, as well as walk for designers including Dolce & Gabbana and Givenchy. What I enjoy most about photography is the creative process. Every shoot has a different energy, and I like being able to transform into whatever the concept calls for. There’s something really rewarding about seeing an idea come to life through a photo.

RC: What does your typical workout routine look like, and how many days a week do you train? DM: I typically train around 5–6 days a week. My workouts are primarily weight training, with a combination of strength and hypertrophy work to build and maintain my physique. I also incorporate incline walking, running, basketball, and other forms of cardio depending on my goals. I try not to look at fitness as something I do only for modeling. It’s a lifestyle for me. Staying active helps me feel confident, focused, and disciplined. RC: How important is diet to maintaining your physique? DM: Diet is extremely important. Training gives you the stimulus, but nutrition plays a huge role in how your body actually looks and performs. I focus on getting enough protein, eating mostly whole foods, staying hydrated, and being consistent rather than trying to follow a perfect diet. I also believe in balance. You have to be able to enjoy your life while still being disciplined enough to reach your goals.
12 WIREMAG.COM #9 2026
RC: What hobbies and other interests do you enjoy? DM: Outside of modeling and fitness, I enjoy traveling, spending time at the beach, basketball, running, fashion, photography, and creating content. I also really enjoy learning about business and sales. I’m always looking for ways to grow and build something of my own.
RC: What would you like to accomplish next, both in modeling and work? DM: With modeling, I want to continue expanding internationally and work with more major fashion houses, campaigns, and publications. I’d love to continue building relationships in markets like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, London, and beyond. Outside of modeling, I’m focused on building my insurance business and continuing to grow my fitness brand. Ultimately, I want to create businesses that give me the freedom to keep pursuing modeling while also creating opportunities for other people.
RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? DM: I think the biggest thing I’ve learned is that you have to be willing to bet on yourself. A lot of opportunities don’t happen overnight. You have to stay consistent, keep improving, and be willing to put yourself in uncomfortable situations. I’m still early in my journey, and I’m excited about what’s ahead. I want people to see that you can have multiple passions and build a career around all of them. You don’t necessarily have to choose just one.

DINING DELICIOUS By Rafa Carvajal

PAO AT FAENA MIAMI BEACH: RENOWNED MODERN ASIAN CUISINE
My friend Joey and I recently had a delightful dinner at Pao by James Beard Foundation award-winning chef Paul Qui, which is located within the beautiful Faena Miami Beach. We were fortunate that Paul came by our table and sat down with us to talk about the restaurant, some of his delicious dishes, and his career. Pao’s distinct menu reflects Paul’s culinary expertise and global inspirations that encompass Filipino, Spanish, Japanese, and French dishes enhanced by charcoal and smoke. Paul follows a modernist approach towards his food, which is also playful and authentic, beautifully presented, visionary, while inspired by tradition. He was born in Manila, trained in classic French and Japanese cuisine, and masterfully blurs the lines between international flavors to foster gastronomic innovation. Paul won Top Chef Season 9 and a James Beard award for Best Chef: Southwest. Our dinner was served in a spectacular setting with the iconic golden unicorn at the center of the restaurant and with excellent service. We ordered two of Pao’s tasteful cocktails to start with, The Myth with ube-infused vodka, coconut rum, and toasted pineapple shrub; and an Old Fashioned infused with rich, woody smoke with a cocktail smoker, crafted with an exceptional Japanese whiskey. 16 WIREMAG.COM #9 2026
Our dinner started with a seasonal starter Amuse Bouche, chef’s selection. Our first courses were the Aguachile Negro with ora king salmon, yuzu pearls, charred avocado, charred bell pepper, cucumber, squid ink, yuzu pickled pearl onions, and charred cipollini; and Maguro-Zu with akami, dragon fruit sanbaizu, wakamomo, Thai chili, and Thai basil oil.
Our second courses were Fried Chicken with sweet chili sauce, roasted banana ketchup, jalapeño, and Thai herbs; and Grilled Greens with frisée, baby gem, kombu butter, pine nut praline, charred onion cultured crème fraîche, and Homestead farm exotic greens. Our third course was the Unicorn with sea urchin, grilled sweet corn pudding, sake aioli, chile de arbol, and lime. The fourth course was Wagyu Short Rib with 72-hour wagyu short rib, Japanese sweet potato, nikiri beurre monte, pickled grapes, and red watercress. For desserts, we enjoyed the Corn Ice Cream Sandwich with cajeta, and garrotxa cheese; and Black Cherry with Illanka chocolate mousse, tonka bean panna cotta, and morello cherry. All the dishes were scrumptious, but three standouts were the Fried Chicken, Unicorn and Wagyu Short Rib. This is what Paul shared with us about the Fried Chicken: “That recipe took me since 2009 to perfect, and then this year I finally figured it out. The chicken is super moist and it’s extra crispy. And guess what? It’s gluten-free, and it’s a pasture-raised chicken. That’s why it’s so good.”

Bea Arthur: The Documentary
OUTshine’s expansive program also includes world premieres of Argentina’s The Mirror and The Fixation (La Fijación), along with international premieres of Ballroom, Whispering Trees and The Last Routine (Šampión). Morocco and Canada’s Heir to Secrets (L'Héritier des secrets) receives its U.S. premiere, while several East Coast, Southeast and Florida premieres further demonstrate OUTshine’s growing reputation as a destination for discovering new LGBTQ+ cinema from around the world. Among them are the animated science-fiction adventure Jim Queen, The Golden Age (L'Âge d'Or), A Good Child, The Arrangement (L'Arrangement) and the Trans Spotlight selection I Am Mario (Soy Mario). Regional premieres including Labrador or the Autopsy of Silence (Labrador or Autopsie du silence), Downtown, I Come Home and Mineshaft: The Cruising Murders add even more variety to the schedule.
Things will take a darker turn on October 21 when OUTshine presents its Centerpiece Film, No Rest for the Wicked, at Savor Cinema in Fort Lauderdale. Set amid the haunting beauty of the Faroe Islands, the folk-horror story follows a young fisherman who falls for a mysterious whaler. When tragedy awakens a terrifying vampire curse, their romance becomes a battle for survival. A Halloween-themed afterparty will follow. No Rest for the Wicked
The Fixation
Latin American cinema also commands attention during Noche CineMundo at Silverspot Cinema Downtown Miami. The Florida premiere of Narciso, a multinational production centered on 1959 Paraguay, explores the mysterious death of a charismatic rock star and the consequences of living openly under a military dictatorship. The evening continues with the return of OUTshine After Dark and the Southeast premiere of Corpus, a seductive horror story about a young photographer who follows the man he secretly loves to a remote estate, only to discover that an alluring invitation hides something far more sinister.
The Festival will conclude its in-person fall edition Sunday, October 25, at 6 p.m. at Miami’s Little Haiti Cultural Complex with the Closing Night Florida premiere of Before I Do. This romantic comedy follows a groom-to-be whose bachelor weekend becomes complicated when unresolved feelings for his best man suddenly return, forcing everyone involved to reconsider exactly what, and who, they are celebrating. An allout closing-night afterparty will follow. For anyone who cannot make every screening, the Festival continues online with select OUTshine At-Home films available from October 26 through November 1. Before I Do

Why you need dental insurance in retirement. Many Americans are fortunate to have dental coverage for their entire working life, through employer-provided benefits. When those benefits end with retirement, paying dental bills out-of-pocket can come as a shock, leading people to put off or even go without care. Simply put — without dental insurance, there may be an important gap in your healthcare coverage. When you’re comparing plans ...
Medicare doesn’t pay for dental care.1
Previous dental work can wear out.
f Look for coverage that helps pay for major services. Some plans may limit the number of procedures — or pay for preventive care only.
That’s right. As good as Medicare is, it was never meant to cover everything. That means if you want protection, you need to purchase individual insurance.
Even if you’ve had quality dental work in the past, you shouldn’t take your dental health for granted. In fact, your odds of having a dental problem only go up as you age.2
f Look for coverage with no deductibles. Some plans may require you to pay hundreds out of pocket before benefits are paid. f Shop for coverage with no annual maximum on cash benefits. Some plans have annual maximums of $1,000. 1
Early detection can prevent small problems from becoming expensive ones. The best way to prevent large dental bills is preventive care. The American Dental Association recommends checkups twice a year.
Treatment is expensive — especially the services people over 50 often need. Consider these national average costs of treatment ... $274 for a checkup ... $299 for a filling ... $1,471 for a crown.3 Unexpected bills like this can be a real burden, especially if you’re on a fixed income.
