SOUTH FLORIDA NIGHTLIFE: PART 3 OF 3 In the past few issues, I have detailed the hottest happenings in Miami Beach and off the beach, providing you with the inside scoop on where to go and what to do. In this week’s column, I will focus on some of the weekly events held by a few of Miami’s most glamorous promoters.
The revitalized party has become a huge success among local scenesters, attracted the glamorous and gorgeous every Friday night, who enjoy the $7 Finlandia vodka drink specials and hot beats by DJ Bryan Zero. If that weren’t enough, Edison also heats up his weekly event by hosting event after parties, as well as fashion events. In fact, this Friday night, he will host the official after party for Ability Explosion’s the Comedy Explosion with Suzanne Westenhoeffer.
Over the years, it seems more and more restaurants, clubs, and bars like to spice up their own weekly line-up by bringing in an outside producer, who in turn brings in a whole new crop of clientele. Here’s the best part – the South Florida gay scene gets to experience venues that we normally wouldn’t put on our party list.
Now, when it comes to busy little bees, no one seems busier than Tony Ferro and his gang of Penny Back Boyz and their sidekick Sookie Stacks. After launching the Friday night party, Filthy Gorgeous Fridays at Score a couple of years ago, they have had some major success with a number of other incredible parties.
Someone who has become famous in South Florida for providing high quality gay events in unlikely venues is the ever-fabulous Edison Farrow. Over the past few years, we have seen some really fantastic weekly parties pop-up here and there at venues that don’t normally cater to the gay community. Jade Fridays at Jade Lounge became a legendary event, while Simple Life Thursdays at Buck15 had a great six year run. Nowadays, Edison has put all of his attention on his re-invented Friday night soiree, Hype Fridays at MOVA Lounge.
On Wednesdays, they host MOVA Lounge’s sexiest night of the week, College Night Wednesdays with $4 Finlandia vodka drink specials all night long. Their new Thursday night party at Crème Lounge above Score called Pop Thursdays has also become a staple on the gay circuit. Of course, things get really ugly during their weekly Sunday night party, Out-n-Ugly Sundays, as MOVA’s bartenders hop on the bar, free pouring Herradura tequila shots for anyone willing to take the risk.
Most recently, Tony Ferro teamed up with another local promoter, Scott Houser, to create the monthly Tuesday night event, Soaked at the Dream Hotel. Beginning at 9 p.m., the party features electrifying beats by DJ Mac and complimentary specialty cocktails from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. This coming Tuesday night they will partner with Papi Underwear to showcase a few delicious scantily clad men, sporting nothing more than the latest Papi creations. Promoter Dustin Reffca seems to have created a spark on Monday nights with his party, Glitter Box Mondays. The weekly event offers $1 beers all night long and features some high energy beats courtesy of DJ Smeejay! Most recently, Dustin joined the team over at Sushi Samba on Tuesday nights to promote their weekly Cosplay Tuesdays. The delicious dinner party offers some fantastic bites, drink specials, and, of course, lounge beats that will surely get you in the mood to party. From the Bass Museum to the Fillmore Theater to the New World Symphony, to Art Basel, there is just so much to see and do on this multi-billion dollar sandbar. On Saturday, November 5th, the already teeming Miami Beach arts, culture, and entertainment scene will get a shot of adrenaline as the City welcomes its third Sleepless Night! Featuring about 150 different performances, exhibitions, and installations at 80 locations around Miami Beach, this year’s Sleepless Night is sure to be an amazing evening that will include a little something for everyone! After discovering the European concept of an endless night dedicated to the local arts and culture community, City officials decided to replicate the event that has become a mainstay in cities ranging from Paris, Madrid, Brussels, and Montreal, among others, making Miami Beach the very first city in the United States to host Sleepless Night! The first year was a huge success, attracting close to 100,000 people. Two years later, the City received enough funding to host another Sleepless Night, attracting more than 130,000 people. This year, Sleepless Night organizer, Gary Farmer, is expecting an even larger crowd! I recently caught up with Gary Farmer to get the inside scoop on this year’s Sleepless Night and all the amazing events that will be taking place throughout it. The decision to produce the first Sleepless Night was a direct response by the Miami Beach Cultural Arts Council to the community challenge that arose when the Performing Arts Center (now the Arsht Center) opened in

Downtown Miami in 2006. Prior to that event, Miami Beach’s Jackie Gleason Theater of the Performing Arts was the county’s venue of choice for Broadway road shows, opera, ballet, and major classical music concerts. Miami Beach ended up losing all of those bookings and their accompanying economic impact, and privatized the Gleason Theater, now leased to Live Nation and operating as the Fillmore Miami Beach. Sleepless Night was created to restore confidence in the City’s commitment to the arts and to strengthen its reputation as the region’s prime cultural tourism destination. Where is the origin of Sleepless Night? The City of Paris created Nuit Blanche in 2002 as a vehicle to demystify contemporary art by bringing it directly to the people in a free, all-night event. Its instant success inspired other cities – Rome, Madrid, Brussels, Montreal, etc. – to stage similar events, which now occur in more than 15 cities worldwide. Miami Beach was the first U.S. city to stage this all night citywide event. What is the concept of Sleepless Night? The Nuit Blanche model was chosen because it offered the opportunity to reach all of the diverse populations of South Florida and to create community and pride by removing the barriers that often disenfranchise some segments of the population from the arts. Sleepless Night has the transformative power to create community through the shared experience of diverse audiences enjoying the arts in all their various forms. It successfully addresses the ultimate issue facing the arts today, audience-building, by surprising the public with the entire range of cultural product through presentations woven into the fabric of a social event. The excitement of a free, all-night and all-ages party promising hundreds of cultural diversions creates a unique opportunity to unify all segments of our society into a single community of arts lovers. Free admission provides opportunities to try
something new or previously inaccessible. Juxtapositions of offerings expose spillover audiences to unexpected pleasures. Presenting the arts in unexpected locations engages participants and spectators in a new way, enabling fresh points of view and bringing the arts to the audiences rather than the other way around. What does it do for the artists that participate? Sleepless Night is transformative for artists as well, providing paid performance and exhibition opportunities with virtually guaranteed attendance, increasing exposure and strengthening artists’ opportunities for future fundraising efforts; encouraging unusual and sometimes amazing collaborations; and opening the eyes of local artists to new possibilities through premiere presentations of new work and new artists from outside South Florida. The programming of Sleepless Night is designed to appeal to every audience, from preschoolers to seniors. When was the first Sleepless Night and what was the response? The first Sleepless Night was November 3, 2007, and it was a tremendous hit. Over 100,000 people attended, many of them waiting in line for hours to experience the “Luminarium” Levity III, a giant, inflated environment of color and light that took up half of Collins Park. Sleepless Night didn’t take place last year. Why did it go on a brief hiatus? Since 2007, Sleepless Night has been a biannual event, due to the difficulties of raising the money to produce it. This year we are beginning an annual schedule, thanks to a generous two-year grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation through the Knight Arts Challenge. We also have major funding this year from the NEA, the State, the GMCVB, the Miami Beach VCA, Café Bustelo, Magic City Casino, Classical South Florida Radio, Park@420, and Monster. Why do you think Miami Beach was the perfect place for Sleepless Night? Compact, pedestrian-friendly, culturally rich environment, and a resident and tourist population that likes to have a good time and appreciates the arts. In the first year, there were a number of artists, installations, and events. Which were you favorite and most memorable? There are always so many great things. In 2007, the aerial dance piece “Ricochet,” created for Sleepless Night by Animate Objects Physical Theater with the Fushu Daiko drummers outside the Bass Museum, was spectacular – it literally stopped traffic. It was

How is this year’s Sleepless Night different from the first? Aside from the artists? This year’s programming is the most solid yet. This year for the first time we are closing Ocean Drive from 5th to 11th Streets for four hours (from 7p.m. to 11 p.m.) to accommodate street performances by Sarruga and MarchFourth, and we also have some roving artists in the Lincoln Road area, including the hilarious Big Rory and Ochie from the U.K. New locations this year include Old City Hall and the Police Plaza on Washington, the new Civic Plaza on the corner of Meridian and 17th, SoundScape of course, and the new stage in front of 1111 Lincoln Road.

We estimated a 30 percent increase in attendance from 2007 to 2009, to around 130,000, so we’re expecting at least that. How can businesses still get involved in Sleepless Night if they haven’t already?
the essence of everything we wanted to accomplish. In 2009 that moment came for me at “Canal,” Frozen Music’s installation along the Dade Boulevard canal between Washington and Convention Center Drive, in which the environment was actually transformed by art into something completely new. It was magical. How does Sleepless Night differ from any other major event in Miami Beach? It’s all free, it’s all night, it’s all over the City, and it’s all about the arts. This is a City produced event. Why does the City of Miami Beach feel it is important to host an event like this? We are extremely lucky to have a Mayor and Commission and City Administration who understand how important the arts are, both to our economy and our quality of life. In fact, Miami Beach is the only municipality in the state whose arts budget has not been cut in the past several years. For one thing, the arts have a huge economic impact in Miami Beach, contributing around 150 million dollars annually to our local economy. And the arts are essential to a healthy community. Our residents know this, and continue to give high priority to cultural events in our community satisfaction surveys. In terms of participation, what are you guys expecting this year? We have about 150 different performances, exhibitions and installations at 80 locations around the City. All of Miami Beach’s cultural institutions are participating, along with major presenters like Miami Light Project, Tigertail Productions, the Rhythm Foundation, and FUNDarte. What are some of the events you are most looking forward to? I really wish I could see everything, but I’m usually too busy that night to see very much. They can offer some kind of arts programming – a performance, exhibition, film, etc. – that is free and open to the general public. What are you hoping to accomplish with this year’s event? I’m hoping that everyone in town will turn off their TV and computer screens and get out and enjoy the arts, the world, and each other. And that an enlightened corporate executive will take note of this most wonderful night of the year in Miami Beach and sign on as name sponsor for next year’s Sleepless Night. And when will the next Sleepless Night take place? The next Sleepless Night will be on November 3, 2012.

Mayoral Candidate Steve Berke Discusses why he is the Best Choice for the Miami Beach LGBT Community Why should we vote for you over Matti Bower who has been such a friend to the LGBT community? Okay, it is true that Matti has been supportive of the LGBT community and has done some great things such as helping to bring a Gay Pride Parade to Miami Beach. However, I would argue that sometimes she has been more polite than actually friendly, especially when being truly friendly was not politically expedient. Ask yourself this: When Howard Stickland was beaten and abused by police officers for dialing 911 after witnessing those same cops brutally assaulting another gay man in Flamingo Park, why did the LGBT community have to pressure City officials to take action against the police? Why wasn’t Matti the one leading the charge and calling for immediate answers? And, why haven’t we seen her doing more to support gay marriage?
people feel that the cops are too quick to hassle gay men. Others assert that this is one of the reasons that many lesbians and gay men are leaving the city. What do you say to that? Well, firstly, I must point out that the majority of our police officers are among the very best in the world. However, there is a very small minority of cops that are a disgrace to their uniform, who do not behave in the way we expect of our public servants and, in fact, are simply criminals – be they beating up homosexual men in the park or drunkenly running over tourists in ATVs. For those bad apples the solution is simple, their actions will not be tolerated and we will prosecute them to the full extent of the law. As mayor I will have zero tolerance toward bad policing. Secondly, I do not think that it is true we
have seen an exodus of our gay and lesbian population from South Beach . I think what we have seen is our gay community maturing - our city boasts so many LGBT owned businesses that the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce is located in Miami Beach at Old City Hall. We have high-profile gay leaders like Commissioner Michael Gongora, our city is home to numerous gay and lesbian citizens who are parents; they have families and worry about the future of their community because their children will grow up here. What will you do for the LGBT community when you are elected mayor? Well, as I said, I will be pro-active in fighting for the rights of gays and lesbians to be just as miserable as straight couples
Wait, isn’t Gay Marriage a state issue? Yes, of course. However, the mayor of a city with the global media presence of Miami Beach can be a powerful champion for gay marriage and can also be pro-active in bringing the fight for equality to state lawmakers. It is not good enough to just sit back and say there is nothing we can do and blame the status quo on those in Tallahassee . As a community we need to stand up for all of our citizens and do what is right. I have made my position on this issue clear since day one of my campaign, and have stated that I will be proud to officiate the first gay wedding at City Hall if the happy couple will allow me the honor of doing so. You mentioned the Strickland case. The relationship of the Miami Beach Police Department and the LGBT Community has certainly been soured by this case, and many
by being able to get married. I want to be absolutely clear that I will come down hard upon any discrimination against gay, lesbian or transgender people that takes place in our city. Also, I think it is time to expand Gay Pride from a simple parade to a city sponsored weekend event celebrating LGBT culture in Miami Beach on a scale approaching that of Art Basel or the South Beach Wine & Food Festival. I also promise to listen to your concerns, and to always be in your corner. And, what else do you stand for? Well, I was the first person to come up with a comprehensive plan to do away with Urban Beach Week in one year. The city will sponsor a re-branding of Memorial Weekend to a Veterans Beach Weekend, during which we will honor the service of our men and women in uniform and create a celebration that is fun and, most importantly, safe for everyone. I also favor the decriminalization of marijuana. We will use an on-the-spot fine system similar to those successfully implemented in Denver, Seattle and Philadelphia . This will save the city money by not prosecuting people for a victimless crime and, in fact, raise revenue for our City budget. I will also fix the pension crisis, audit the City’s books and cut some of the extraordinary salaries paid to city employees.

Scott Hauser and Tony Ferro came up with SOAKED, a nighttime rooftop event. SOAKED brings together the perfect elements to “mix, mingle, and meet” in a relaxed atmosphere at Dream’s rooftop pool on the last Tuesday of every month. Wire recently caught up with Scott Hauser to find out more about this chic affair. What would you like Wire Magazine’s readers to know about your new SOAKED party? SOAKED is a new party up on the rooftop at the Highbar at the Dream Hotel. Tony Ferro and I have always wanted to do some type of event together. We wanted to join forces and do a big gay party. SOAKED is a party, which you can come to, mix, mingle, and meet new people. There is never a cover, everyone is welcomed, if you get there early you do not have to wait in line, and the drinks are reasonably priced. SOAKED is a rooftop pool party. Right now, with The Dream Hotel being so new, we are waiting for licensing to be able to use the pool at night. Once the license is received, SOAKED will become a nighttime rooftop pool party where you will be able to come, sit, swim or soak in the pool at night. SOAKED will be a monthly party for now, usually the last Tuesday of each month.
Each party we will try to have something special and something different. Why did you choose The Dream Hotel to host your new party? Dream Hotel was the newest Hotel opening up on South Beach. I was told that they would have a phenomenal rooftop. I have always been known as the “rooftop” guy. I have thrown my monthly rooftop party at the Townhouse Hotel for the last six years. It has been very successful, but I wanted to do something different. The Townhouse is amazing and I will never stop doing my parties there, but I wanted a bigger venue. I wanted to be able to have a DJ spin, and the thought of being able to get SOAKED in a pool at night was a huge factor in my decision to pursue The Dream Hotel. This was the answer to doing something different. There is no nighttime pool type party. When I say pool party, I am not talking about wild crazy parties like during Winter or White party. I am talking about a pool party where you can just sit in, dip in, or SOAK in at night and mix, mingle, and meet new people while the DJ is spinning, and others are dancing around the pool or hanging out at the bar. There is nothing like that. This is what really appealed to me. Again, wanting to do something different, and having other options on
What can people expect for entertainment, atmosphere, and any drink specials? The atmosphere on the rooftop of The Dream Hotel is incredible. Aside from the pool, and the beautiful bar, the views are spectacular. You can see the beach, the art deco buildings, and at night it all lights up. In addition, there will be the most eclectic, influential, wellknown, and beautiful people attending our SOAKED parties. We have lots of entertainment. This week we have Chyna Girl working the door and DJ Mac spinning poolside (we will always have a DJ and great music). In addition to that, Papi Underwear is sponsoring the event. Papi models will be modeling underwear this Tuesday night. There will also be giveaways. Chambord Vodka will be the alcohol sponsor for the upcoming party. the beach for the GLBT community was my goal. Also the opportunity to work with Tony Ferro was a huge factor as well. Tony is amazing. He is very well respected in the community and has done many different parties and events here on the beach. Being able to combine forces with him was something that I wanted to do and something that I was very excited about as well. What’s the number one reason people should come and get SOAKED on Tuesday? The number one reason would be that it is something new and exciting. SOAKED will be something different, another option and place to go to. A place where you can come mix, mingle, and meet new people or reconnect with old friends.

PHOTO PROVIDED BY BIG MACHINE MEDIA The slamming of lockers, the smell of wet carpet, unflattering iridescent lighting.. It’s not just another grueling day at the gym; it’s worse—high school. While the rest of us spent our glory years drooling over the questionable chemistry teacher or the captain of the football team, Daniela Brooker was busy writing her first pop hit. The 18-year-old singer/songwriter has been performing for as long as she can remember. After her first track, ‘Turn It Up’, was picked up by a London radio show, Daniela finally got to bring her real talents to the head of the class. While still in high school Daniela managed to juggle her studies and a relentless schedule of song writing, recording, and performing live. She’s worked with some heavy hitting producers, including Louis Read (Mary J Blige, The Noisettes), Paul Garred from The Kooks, and Rob Harris of Jamiroquai while earning positive reviews for her music. Although her tracks have mainstream pop appeal, her personal music taste has a much wider range. “I’m a big rock ‘n’ roll fan” Daniela explains, “but I also love old singers like Etta James, as well as pop icons like Beyoncé. My dream would be to duet with Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler.” It’s that eclectic love of music that makes her live sets just as interesting, infusing pop, rock, and Latin influences. When describing her shows, Daniela says, “I give everything and just hope people have a good time.” Now a high school graduate, Daniela Brooker will be schooling us this Thursday at Score with a few of her hits, including her single ‘Summer Love’, which recently debuted on LOGO and HERE TV. Tell us about where you’re from and how you started singing? I am from London, England but I am also half Venezuelan. I have always had the desire to sing for as long as I can remember. Any excuse to put on a glittery outfit and sing and I’d be there. When did you realize you wanted to be a recording artist? When I was 12 I was given a session at a recording studio to cover three songs for my birthday. Ever since then, I have been completely in love with recording music.

At the moment I don’t have plans to continue school because I want to completely focus on music. I can’t do things halfway, so doing school and music at the same time wouldn’t be good for me.
Was ‘Summer Love’ written from experience? What’s the dish? Haha! It is about a summer boyfriend/fling I had when I was younger with a Venezuelan boy. Remembering it makes me laugh because I was so dramatic! I cried the whole way home, which is a 10-hour flight. Is there an album in the works for you? I’m writing as much as possible so that when I come to completing an album I’ll have the best songs possible. I do however have an EP coming out early next year, which I’m really excited about! If you had your way, what would you want your album to sound like? My dream album would have a song for everyone on it, whether that’s a dance track or a stripped acoustic number. I believe an album should have something for everyone. Living in the UK, how in touch are you still with your Venezuelan heritage? We all speak Spanish at home. My mum always plays salsa and my brother is always blasting reggaeton, so I am around the language constantly. Being Latin, my mother has brought me up in that way and culture. Do you ever infuse Latin flavor into your music? I always try and use a few lines in Spanish. I love artists who cross Latin influences with pop such as Pitbull and Shakira. Now that you’ve graduated high school do you plan on going on to college or is it full-on

Will this be your first time in South Beach? I was there when I was really young, so I don’t remember it too well, but I am SO looking forward to being there. It is the destination I am most excited about going to! What excites you the most about being here? To perform to all the Miami people whom I have heard love to party!!! What do you have planned for us on October 20th? I plan to entertain all different sorts of audiences! If you’re into pop, rock, or even dance I hope to have everyone enjoying the show. Will you be bringing any of the hotties from your ‘Summer Love’ video with you? Haha! One of the extras is my brother, so he’ll be coming. My whole band is coming as well. So if you’re into the rugged look, they will be an option too. You’re going to have a lot of your fellow Venezuelans at your performance on Thursday. Is there anything you’d like to say to them? I’m so excited to have a Latin audience as it will be a different crowd than what I am used to, so I hope you enjoy yourselves and look forward to seeing you dancing!!!

WIRED FLIX: CIRCUMSTANCE & EL BULLI: COOKING IN PROGRESS
If you need to be reminded that the Islamic Republic of Iran is a corrupt, repressive theocracy that stifles its citizens (and much, much worse) CIRCUMSTANCE does so artfully. The story of two teenage girls, Atafeh (Nikohl Boosheri), the daughter of a wealthy Tehran family, and her BFF Shireen, an orphan, CIRCUMSTANCE dramatizes what happens when youthful high spirits – and budding sexuality – collide with Iran’s grindingly oppressive regime. How oppressive is it? For young women, singing and swimming are forbidden. Dressing in a manner not modest enough to satisfy the brutal Morality Police can get you a beating. But behind the façade of obedience and piety pulses a wild youth culture. In an exhilarating scene Atafeh and Shireen whip off their head scarves and floor-length dresses, revealing tight-fitting, glittering western clothes, and dive into a night of partying worthy of South Beach at its edgiest. The girls taste the forbidden beyond the drinks, drugs, and music at underground raves. Their close relationship intensifies and becomes sexual and they step tentatively toward underground political activism. But the Morality Police are soon on the girls’ trail, given a helping hand by Atafeh’s older brother Mehran (Reza Sixo Safai), a recovering drug addict who has found religion (and a job) at the neighborhood mosque. Suddenly Atafeh and Shireen, already facing limited options, feel the grip of the state tighten. Writer-director Maryam Keshavarz delivers a confident, surely crafted film that’s visually beautiful and frequently compelling. But CIRCUMSTANCE is a long hour and forty-six minutes; Keshavarz’ screenplay is sometimes diffuse when it could be pointed. Some elements of the story, such as the dynamics within Atafeh’s family, get lots
of screen time while others get less attention than they might. Whatever happens to Ali, the party promoter brutally beaten by Mehran, or Hossein, an Iranian-American visiting from the U.S., who is arrested and set to be tried as a spy? CIRCUMSTANCE was produced on the down low with Beirut standing in for Tehran, and some members of the cast who travelled between Iran and their adopted countries have been banned from entering Iran after appearing in the film. It could be an incident from the film, but this is really happening – and it’s another reminder of the human rights crisis in Iran. One could be forgiven for mistaking EL BULLI: COOKING IN PROGRESS for a feature-length satire from the tricksters at THE ONION. All the clichés of high-end food fetishism are here: the vanishingly tiny portions of frequently bizarre foodstuffs, the arcane and painstakingly exacting food prep, the endless attention to values other than taste and nutritive value. But EL BULLI is not a satire. It’s a deadly earnest documentary chronicling a year in the life of El Bulli, the world’s furthest-out, most experimental restaurant, an eatery where, in the words of chef Ferran Adrià, individual dishes should be “magic” and the menu as a whole, “bewildering.” Half the year at El Bulli was spent conceptualizing a new menu, which was served at the restaurant for the remaining six months of each year. (El Bulli closed earlier this year after losing money for a decade.) Gereon Wetzel’s film captures chef Ferran Adrià’s team of gastronomic innovators as they cut, blend, pressure cook and roast a dizzying array of ingredients, ultimately creating “the Water Menu,” featuring such dishes as “ice vinaigrette” and “cocktails” concocted from water and various exotic oils. It would all be hilarious if it were not true and tedious.

It’s always interesting to watch skilled craftsmen do their work, but EL BULLI is too long and too grindingly slow to sustain interest. The crash of a hard drive is as dramatic as this film gets, and humor is not on the menu. The achingly earnest tone of the film is echoed by its intermittent musical score, a sonorous drone of temple bells. EL BULLI is less a film than a cult object, a fetish for foodies. What else can one say about a film that spends several minutes on a scene of Adrià sitting at a table, glumly tasting a series of dishes – and not ever seeming to be touched by magic?
