photos by Henry Perez lying can be taxing on the body. Even the most healthy people can become ill during or following a flight. Although it isn't likely someone will avoid flying with a "little bug" you can take steps to make sure you don't feel worse. Here is part one of my tips to keep in mind when traveling.

Try to be healthy before getting on a plane. Flying can exacerbate whatever illnesses you already have. Between the dry air, tiring situations and stress, your little cold can become worse and perhaps even develop into a more serious respiratory illness.

Tackle any symptoms as soon as they develop prior to your trip.

Take the appropriate vitamins and/or try one of the Airborne or similar products with vitamins and immunity supporting ingredients. Drinking green tea may also help curb illness.

Stay hydrated. Commercial airplanes have very low humidity, (lower than the Sahara desert). This can lead to you becoming dehydrated. Drink plenty of water the days before your flight as well as during and following your flight. Dehydration can cause you to become run down and make it easier to pick up viruses.

Avoid alcohol the day before you fly and while you are flying. It can dehydrate you and leave you feeling drained. Alcohol affects you differently at different altitudes. Too much alcohol is bad but there are hidden factors. Bloody Mary mixes served by many airlines have over 1,000mg of sodium per serving. You'll increase your chances of having swollen feet and hands by consuming too much sodium.

Pack any vital prescription medications in your carry-on bag. Make sure you carry accurate instructions. A late connector or lost bag could leave you without important medications.

Bring munchies. Pack light snacks in your bag or pick up something from the airport. Don't fly hungry. Some airlines have eliminated in-flight snack service. Any delay can leave you unable to grab a meal in a connector airport. Have a little something to eat in your carry on.

If you have any restrictions in your diet you should definitely pack something from home. This includes low sodium, low fat, low cholesterol, etc.

Prepare for the worst and pack what you might need. Don't assume the airline will have something if you forget. Take Tylenol, Advil, Pepto Bismol, etc. Think of the worst-case scenario and not just how you feel while packing.

Avoid flying if you've recently broken a limb and have a recent cast. The limb expands with flight and you can cause the circulation to be cut off causing permanent damage. Talk to your doctor if you fly often and have them leave extra room in your cast or use a different casting if you will be traveling soon.

ou may remember the title sequence of Milk, the Harvey Milk biopic of a few years back. If not, stick your Blu-Ray disc in the player and refresh your memory: Black-and-white images of police raids on gay bars, men lunging for the shadows as the lights of news cameras flash.

The makers of Milk didn’t create this footage. They found it. In Miami. The film is TV news coverage of anti-gay crackdowns in South Florida, real people’s real experiences, captured on film, rescued from destruction, preserved and made available by a film and video archive, the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives.

TV news footage is real, but home movie footage is mighty real. Shot by parents and friends in back yards and vacation spots, home movies capture real-life moments unfiltered, uncensored and uncut.

Thousands flock to Lincoln Road in South Beach to gawk at congregations of freaks, scantily clad characters, and all the things your mother warned you about in an all out balls-to-the-wall showcase of some of the most convoluted creations known to Miami. Partygoers scurry from venue to venue as Miami unleashes some of the most devious productions, live entertainment, world-renowned DJs, and block parties in every corner of the City. From South Beach to the Design District, there is something for every ghoul and goblin that dares venture into the streets for Halloween ’12. We’ve compiled our top picks with a comprehensive guide of the best Miami has to offer this Halloween.

This year, a staple event returns with a fresh new theme in Miami’s historic Moore Building. SAVE Dade brings you another edition of the highly acclaimed Hellrotika, a soiree, dance party, and costume extravaganza where something lurks in every corner, and, of course, on the dance floor. This year SAVE Dade wants you to party with the mythological gods as it brings guests “Odyssey of the Gods.” We talked to CJ Ortuno, Executive Director of SAVE Dade, who gave us the latest scoop on the upcoming fundraiser benefiting SAVE’s efforts fighting for LGBT equality in South Florida. Can you describe this year’s theme Odyssey of the Gods?

Odyssey of the Gods is an epic voyage to where Ancient Gods live and play.

Hellrotika is South Florida's premier Halloween event and every year the costumes get more extreme, more original, and better executed. Simply put, we're the best show in town and people come to see and be seen. There really isn't a better place to showcase yourself and see what others have come up with.

Why did SAVE Dade choose to host Hellrotika at the Moore Building this year?

Hellrotika's origins are in the Upper East Side and we always choose locations that respect that heritage.

Every year we look at spaces that are beautiful, and unique within that area, definitely qualities that describe the Moore Building. It's an amazing space and the Design District is hot again, we couldn't be more excited about having the party there.

Will there be a costume contest this year? If so, what is the prize for the winner?

HALLOWEEN GUIDE 2012 tika. Everyone really likes the contest and looks forward to it. Every year we try to up the ante somehow and this year is no different. As far as the prize is concerned, all I can say is it's going to be epic!

Who are the DJs this year?

For the past several years we've worked with DJ Pabel Lima and DJ Miik. These guys are excellent DJs who are from Miami, work as DJs in Miami and know the Miami club sound well. They get what Hellrotika is and we'll keep using them if they wish to keep coming back.

How many people are you expecting this year?

1,200 crazy partygoers attended Hellrotika: Seed of the Beast in hurricane conditions last year at Jungle Island and the party was amazing. This year we've booked two floors at the Moore Building and let's just say we're keeping the option open of moving a floor up if ticket sales continue to move as strongly as they have, so expect the party to be packed to the rafters.

For those wondering, is this a “straight-friendly” LGBT event?

Hellrotika is open to everyone. It's a gay party, a straight party, a drag queen party, a lesbian party, a transsexual party, a come with your mom party (if assless chaps are cool with her). The party is more and more diverse every year and everyone seems to love that, but ya gotta' be over 21 to get in.

What are the ticket prices?

We kept the prices the same as last year. Advance tickets are $40 for General Admission (until Midnight October 22, then they go up to $60) and VIP, which gets you open bar in an exclusive VIP floor overlooking the dance floor atrium is $150. VIP is limited to 200 guests and they go fast, so if VIP is your thing then don't waste time; get tickets at Hellrotika.com How does Hellrotika benefit SAVE Dade and the community?

All of the proceeds from Hellrotika go to SAVE Dade’s political advocacy arm so that we can lobby elected officials to change or protect existing policy. This work takes people power and the proceeds from Hellrotika pay for the time dedicated by the SAVE Dade staff.

How can someone volunteer for Hellrotika or a future SAVE Dade event?

Just go to Hellrotika.com and click on the “volunteer” tab at the top of the page and fill out the form.

Are there any other SAVE Dade events that benefit the community?

We also host an annual cocktail reception called Champions of Equality. This event recognizes special achievements on behalf of the LGBT community. We’ve recognized Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Senator Bill Nelson, Congresswoman Ileana Ros Lehtinen, Bacardi, Greenburg Traurig, The ACLU, and the Miami Beach Commission to name a few.

For those readers who do not know, how does SAVE Dade “Promote. Protect. Defend.” equality in MiamiDade County?

We achieve our mission by organizing and educating the community about the issues and help elect pro-equality candidates at the local, state, and federal level. We then change policy to be inclusive of the LGBT community and do so through a volunteer base and donations.

CRUZ COMING OUT HIGHLIGHTS UNSPOKEN SHIFT – MAYBE

hen R&B’s Frank Ocean came out publically, the loudest voices were favorable and there was talk that the machismo-dominated world of hip-hop was becoming less hostile to gays.

We’ve heard similar things before about a heretofore anti-gay community becoming more open minded because of one high-profile coming out.

The latest example is Puerto Rican boxer Orlando Cruz, who came out recently as a “proud gay man.” Cruz deserves a lot of credit. Sports is arguably the most homophobic of all environments, and boxing more so than the more urbane baseball or soccer. (OK, we could go anywhere here with David Beckham snarks…) After all, boxing is two guys knocking the crap out of each other. Not a lot of room for sensitive new age guys or bro code. Boxing structure is also, ahem, rather subjective, meaning that Cruz took a lot more risk than many others have when coming out. Anderson Cooper and Ocean ostensibly knew that the many in their industries and many who control their fates are at least generally supportive – or can’t afford to look like they are bigots.

Only ethnicity and LGBT issues seem to be something rarely talked about. And it is a shame, because there is a disconnect between acceptance of gays by whites and acceptance by communities of color.

Whites are generally more tolerant of gays; and both African-Americans and Latinos poll as being less tolerant. It isn’t talked about much, in part because it’s a narrative that undermines the media-driven fantasy of a political left-wing in which hardcore statist atheists supposedly have common ground with black Southern Baptist ministers, who in turn have the same perspective as lesbian parents in San Francisco. Um, no, not so much.

It isn’t just political correctness that stands in the way of the larger LGBT world having an open dialogue with people of color about tolerance within minority communities. A few years ago, I was investigating the world of the minority gay man “on the down low” for a newspaper series. I became more fully aware of subcultures that exist within minority communities, often hidden away from even other LGBT sub-cultures.
