LOOKING GOOD FITNESS TIPS BY KEN HUNT

OVER 40 AND STILL FIT – YOU CAN DO IT! ey, all you guys over 40—listen up. Here are some suggestions how to look and feel great at 40 and beyond. As we age, we begin to naturally lose muscle mass. Our bones become weaker and small er. And our cardiovascular health slowly deteriorates. Men in their middle age are in a crucial position in their life: they can either continue their life of inactivity and place them selves at risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, back pain, and PTUFPQPSPTJT PS UIFZ DBO EP TPNFUIJOH BCPVU JU Strength training is one of the best ways of strengthening your muscles, reducing body fat, and improving cardiovascular health. Jogging or aerobic exercise can only help you with the prevention of one or two diseases. However, weight training can have a dramatic posi tive effect across many areas of your physical life.

The Right Fitness Program for your Needs So what kind of strength training program will help you get the best results and allow you to dramatically turn around your health? Well, there are certain key aspects that you should look for in a strength training program: t Compound Movements: Compound movements are exercises that work multiple mus cle groups at once. When you activate lots of muscle mass at once, you release human growth hormone and testosterone. Both of these hormones have been linked to increased muscle mass and decrease fat. t Body Control: Many fitness programs out there focus on how much weight you can lift, or how big your arms look. But the true mark of good health is how well you can control your body. As you age, your joints lose their range of motion and are not even able to support their own bodyweight. t Cardiovascular Health: You need a program that actually works your heart. Most regular cardio programs don't really force your heart to work harder. This is why I prefer higher intensity training as opposed to lower intensity training. Sprints and interval train ing are a great start.

The Benefits of a Combination Bodyweight and Dumbbell Program * UIJOL UIBU UIF CFTU XBZ UP HFU TUBSUFE PO JNQSPWFE IFBMUI FTQFDJBMMZ GPS NJEEMF BHFE NFO would be to combine bodyweight and dumbbell exercises. This is because dumbbell move ments, as long as they are compound exercises, are best for putting on lean muscle mass and strengthening bones. Bodyweight training is also great for increasing lean muscle mass. However, its greatest benefit is body control. Basic bodyweight movements and mobility drills will allow you to move better in daily life and sports. If you're experiencing knee pain, back pain, or hip pain, then you should try bodyweight training as a way to reduce this pain and increase your range of motion Finally, if you construct workouts using bodyweight and dumbbell exercises and perform them in a high intensity manner, then not only will you get a great strength and conditioning benefit, but you'll also be making your heart and lungs work hard. 6 | wire magazine | issue #39, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter

ELIZABETH F. SHWARTZ 2012 Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award There are many areas of law that you have and could have dedicated your life to, what made you exclusively devote your life and your practice to serving the LGBT community? Helping my community is in my DNA. My parents are tremendous role models for me. They’ve devoted much of their lives to working in the Jewish community and always taught me to be proud of who I am and to help those in need. Before I even came out, I got that this is an impor tant civil rights issue. You are very passionate about the LGBT community and family formation, as well as protecting the rights of same-sex couples and their loved ones. Do you feel we have taken tremendous strides in reference to same-sex marriage or do you feel we have a long way to go? We’ve come quite a long way, but we still have so very far to go. We’ve achieved victories many of us didn’t think possible in Florida. Our sexual orientation is legally irrelevant in a custody dispute. We can adopt and do surrogacy. But no, we’ve not achieved marriage equality on a state or federal level and that’s immensely problematic for lots of reasons including that we can’t collect our partner’s social security survivor benefits, we can’t get the marital deduction, and much much more. We need four more years of Obama so he can make good on his promise to see the repeal of DOMA. And we are hopeful about the Supreme Court ruling favorably on a few key cases that would result in greater justice with respect to gaining spousal benefits. The best news is that the tide is turning JO UIF FWFS JNQPSUBOU DPVSU PG QVCMJD PQJOJPO 5IF NBKPSJUZ of the country favors marriage equality for the first time ever. You are one of the country’s most frequently quoted LGBT rights leaders, why has being an advocate for fairness and justice always been so important to you?
