SPORTS & SEX HIT THE PAGES OF WIRE MAGAZINE One of my favorite parts of putting Wire Magazine together every week is sifting through the various editorial opportunities and reviewing the photos that come across my desk on a weekly basis. Some are mind blowing, while others… well let’s just say they need a little work. From local artists to celebrities to community leaders to photographers, the supply of editorial possibilities seems to be endless; however, there are a few rare instances when you discover something or someone you just know people are dying to know about. In this week’s issue, we are featuring a photographer that falls perfectly within that realm. New York based photographer Rick Day originally blew me away with his first photo book Players and continued to titillate my senses with his follow-up book Pioneers. Now the man behind some of the most provocative images I have ever seen is releasing his third and maybe his sexiest book ever, Players 2. While perusing just a few of the images, my jaw dropped and my mouth began to water. Not only did these images feature some of the most gorgeous men on the planet, but they also showcased the models’ perfectly sculpted bodies
in sensual and provocative poses that definitely stirred a few internal emotions! Let’s just say that this is not the kind of book I would feel comfortable flipping through while my mother’s around. However, that isn’t because the book is too provocative. In fact, Rick Day’s Players 2 shows just enough skin in all the right places to let your imagination wonder and your fantasies fester. It is the perfect combination of sex and sports in the most contemporary of ways! Needless to say, I am a huge fan of Rick Day and his incredible “body” of work! In this week’s issue, we feature just a small glimpse of his work. Believe me, I would love to have featured a lot more of his more provocative photos, but then we would have had to deliver this week’s issue with an age requirement disclaimer. When it comes to gender bending debauchery, there’s no better night at TWIST than during their annual Turnabout party. Every year, TWIST’s sexy bartenders trade in their muscles and masculinity for a pair of high heels, crazy wigs, and outlandish outfits. This year, TWIST’s Annual Turnabout party will take place on Wednesday, September 28th from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. As always the highlight of the evening will be the very scandalous shows by the TWIST bartenders. Beginning at 1 a.m., your favorite bartenders will perform some of their favorite songs for your viewing pleasure. These shows have always been known to shock and awe, and from what we hear; this year will be even more insane. If that were not enough, the hostess of the evening, the dirty-mouthed Sean Brady will keep things moving with his witty banter and quick quips all night long. Of course TWIST wouldn’t be TWIST without some incredible beats, and DJ Maximus 3000 has promised to deliver some beats that are sure to get everyone’s panties in a wad! ike most art genres, there are a number of people who claim to be a photographer, cluttering the world with half hazard photos of untrained models and even worse set design. This is why my heart always seems to skip a beat when I finally stumble upon a real photographer – someone who cannot only capture the essence of an individual, but also tell an entire story from beginning to end with just the use of their camera lens. Most recently I discovered just such a photographer, the incredible Rick Day. While perusing the Internet for a gift for a friend, I stumbled across his first photo book, Players. The book was filled with gorgeous, muscled – but not too muscled – men in various provocative poses in a sports themed setting. Needless to say, I didn’t only buy the book for my friend; I also bought one for me! Now, Rick has come out with a second installment of his first book called Players 2, and from what I have seen, it is even more beautiful, provocative, and, in some instances, downright sexual! I recently caught up with the New York photographer to learn more about his journey and his latest creation, Players 2. Where are you from? I was born and raised in Greenville, South Carolina. How did you get into photography? What inspired you? I bought a camera after seeing Bruce Weber’s book “Bear Pond”. His images changed my life. This is the second in a series of photography books for you. What is the concept of Players? I have always been a sports fan and there is usually at least one player on every team that really stands out and is just amazing to look at… very sexy with a great body. I thought about how great it would be if every member of the team were just out of this world sexy and masculine. The ticket sales would sky rocket just from the fans wanting to see the players out there playing. What was the response to your first book? The response to my first book Players was amazing. It was something I wasn’t really expecting, but I was very happy that it took on a life of its own. It definitely helped increase my fan base, hence Players 2. How has your photography evolved since then? This past four years have been a big growth for me as a photographer, but I am always trying new things and have been shooting for 19 years. I am eager to see what lies ahead. What made you decide to do a second installment of the Players concept? Players was my original book. After that I did my second book, Pioneers, which was completely different. It was shot completely on location in New York City, California, Sierra Nevada mountains, Las Vegas, Salt Flats in Utah, Brazil, Vietnam, and China. It was not at all about sports figures. My publishing house urged me to do a follow up book to Players because of its success, so we are now releasing Players 2 In terms of the models, how did you connect with them? I meet models in many different ways... through the amazing agencies here in New York City, Brazil, Miami, and Los Angeles. I also meet them from fans on Facebook and other social networking sites. People are referred to me by fans and/or other models I have shot.

These guys are pretty amazing. Was it hard to concentrate when they were in such provocative poses? In the beginning of the original Players there was some sweating behind my camera, but as I began to shoot so many guys, it became its own entity. And when I am shooting, there is so much joking going on that it never gets to the point of feeling too sexually provocative. How did you get them to feel comfortable? I generally meet them in advance if possible. By now though, the guys that are shooting for this book understand what we are shooting and are completely ready to shoot. How did you select the sport to feature them with? Did it just happen naturally? Generally I ask them what sports they played in high school or college and tried to work that into the shoot. What was the most exciting part about putting this book together? Working with my publisher on any project is always exciting as well as rounding up a team of men to shoot. My agent and close confidant Steve always tries to find a way to make any project feel new and exciting. What do you hope to accomplish with this book? To publish a sequel that is as good as if not better than the original. And I always try to put myself into each book 200% While shooting for this book, what was the most memorable moment? There are too many to even begin. Meeting each guy with his own swagger is always memorable. Some are quite shy while others are complete exhibitionists, so it is always fun to figure out how to get each personality to give me the image I am looking for. TOP TRAX: AULDEN + ARMANI: THE PERFECT FIT

Whoever said “clothes don’t make the man” has obviously never set foot in an Armani Exchange store. Not only is that guy missing out on some of the hottest fashions in the world, he’s missing out on some pretty fierce trax too. DJ/Producer Aulden Brown has been the soundtrack of A|X in South Florida for the past ten years. During the last decade, his unique blend of tribal tech rhythms and inspired vocals with a pop injection earned him guest appearances and residencies at the hottest gay clubs in South Beach history, including Pump, Liquid, Crobar, Palace, and TWIST. Together with A|X, he has also become a staple of Miami’s Winter Music Conference. When he’s not spinning records, Aulden is busy tailoring tracks of his own. In 2010 he released “And We Shall Rise” on Pearlicka Records, which appeared in three compilations. Later that year, his first duo remix with Ricky Marconi, “SneaXx” by Dalyx, charted at #2. And just recently the duo’s remix of “Don’t Be Afriad” by Eddie The Gun won the Slanted Black Records remix contest. In an industry that typically switches its DJs with the seasons, it’s unheard of for one to have dominated a residency for a whole decade. So I had to see for myself if Aulden’s record-breaking stamina is just a matter of finding the perfect fit or if he’s the onesize DJ that truly fits all. When did you start DJing? I fell in love with house music when a friend handed me a mixtape from a DJ at The Loft in Boston. I eventually moved to NYC and became a massive fan of Junior Vasquez. I remember standing on the dancefloor at Palladium and thinking this is what I want to do. When I moved to Miami, DJ Eddie X took me under his wing. I’d watch him play all night and then go home and practice and practice. I felt like, as a DJ, I could really contribute something positive to people’s lives. Twelve years later, it’s still very much about that for me.
How did you get involved with Armani Exchange? In 2001, A|X was just about to open their store in Aventura and they were looking for a DJ for the event. A friend of mine recommended me for the job and we had a great experience together. They asked if I would be interested in continuing on a regular basis at the South Beach store. I was like “Definitely!” How does it feel to have reached such a milestone with Armani? It feels Amazing! I am so grateful to have a place to call home musically. A|X gives me an opportunity every week to do what I love and share that with hundreds of people from all over the world. I’ve watched myself grow both personally and professionally. I’ve seen a lot of changes from the corner of 8th and Collins. It’s different, but still full of characters and personalities. Are you wearing Armani underwear right now? Yes! I’m committed! Where else do you spin? I play every other Friday night at The Rooftop at The Gansevoort and I guest DJ once or twice a month on Mondays at TWIST. It’s POP on Mondays, so we get into a bunch of commercial remixes. Although you’re not gay (sorry boys) you’ve worked in several gay clubs. What is it about spinning for the boys that you enjoy so much? OMG, you just totally outed me! Where’s my publicist? (laughing). I’ve spent most of my career DJing for the

gay community. The relationship really started as having common musical interests. That dancefloor felt like home to me. So, as I began to grow as a DJ, I grew with the same community that I danced with. The boys and girls in the gay community live for the music. I love the energy of the dancefloor where everyone can come and be who they are, which may be themselves or a slightly showier version of themselves. Where can we “try on” your music? I’m on iTunes. For you DJs and audiophiles who must have the .wav file, you can find me on Beatport.com. The latest release is on Pearlicka Records, a remix of ‘Magic Carpet’ by The Khalife Project. If you’re looking for a mix CD, stop by A|X on a Saturday. I always have some with me. What else do you have up your sleeve? I’m really excited about this new radio show I’ve signed on for. It’s on Fixationradio.com, but it also broadcasts on FM in my hometown of Burlington, VT. It’s a great way for me to regularly be able to reach an audience outside of Miami. I’d love to do a commercially released mix CD. In the meantime I’ll continue remixing and producing. Creatively that’s very rewarding for me. Is there anything else you’d like to say to your fans? WIRED FLICKS: SPANISH FILMS CONSUME MIAMI
South Florida is about to get hit by a storm surge of Spanish cinema. No fewer than three festivals devoted to films from Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries are set to swirl sensually across South Florida screens during the next month. Maybe it’s all a prelude to the October release of Pedro Almodóvar’s new film, The Skin I Live In, maybe it’s something in the air, but for film fans now is not the time to ask questions – it’s time to enjoy. With or Without Love, which opens the Festival of New Spanish Cinema at the Coral Gables Art Cinema, would seem the perfect lead-in to a season of picture show pleasures -- a kicky romantic comedy with music set on the sun-kissed hillsides of Tenerife. Think early Almodóvar, with music. But With or Without Love is a farce without fizz, a cinematic soufflé that just won’t rise. It’s the story of Claudia (Angie Cepeda), a gorgeous virago who glides through life secure in the knowledge that the whole world revolves around her. She owns a trendy wine bar in Madrid. She beds her hunky, gap-toothed wine steward, Pablo (Quim Gutiérrez). She keeps her husband out of the loop and is glad that her fresh-faced sister Mónica (Juana Acosta) seldom gets in the way. ¿Todo bien, si? Well, no. Pablo dumps Claudia, who concocts an elaborate scheme to get him back and convinces Mónica (well, to be honest, bribes Monica) to help her. Soon everybody is packed onto a plane headed for the Canary Islands, where comic complications and melodic mischief are bound to ensue. But that does not happen. With or Without Love doesn’t take off, largely because Claudia is an unpleasant, scheming bitch, and neither Cepeda nor director David Serrano find the light touch needed to make her work as a comic character. She’s just nasty, and no fun to watch. The film’s music, a collection of similar-sounding lite jazz concoctions, can’t compensate for Claudia’s ickyness.
Worse, the film runs out of songs before it’s done with its story. The last number in With or Without Love ends fifteen tuneless minutes before the movie does. This isn’t a musical – it’s a movie in which music happens now and again.

Dancing happens in With or Without Love, too, at its best in the film’s slinky, sexy opening sequence. Claudia sashays onto the streets of Madrid, does a little shopping and gets a touchup at a salón, while dancers sweep around her, opening doors, tempting her with dresses and shoes, teasing her hair. It’s a flip, delightful expression of Claudia’s view of the world: It’s her plaything, and the people in it are no more than help.
The Maya series also includes Sympathy for Delicious, directed by the baby daddy from The Kids Are All Right, Mark Ruffalo. Sympathy brings the star power with Orlando Bloom, Juliette Lewis, Laura Linney and Ruffalo in the cast.
After that, dancers frequently show up and step a bit, often delightfully (notably on the plane to Tenerife) but usually just because. It’s as if a small, colorfully clad jazz dance company has decided to stalk Claudia in between cruise ship gigs. With or Without Love has its moments. Two supporting characters, Pedro’s new girlfriend Elena, who’s not nearly as sweet as she seems, and his serpent-tounged aunt, are sharply written and played, and the cast is extraordinarily easy on the eyes. After With or Without Love the Festival of New Spanish Cinema moves to the Miami Beach Cinematheque from September 30th to October 4th with five more titles: 80 Days, co-hosted by the local LGBT film festival; Bicycle, Spoon, Apple, a Goya-winning documentary; Every Song Is About Me, directed by Jonas Trueba; Half of Oscar, a Spanish-Cuban co-production; and Lope, featuring the sultry Sonia Braga. Running September 23rd – 29th at the AMC Sunset Place 24 in South Miami, the Maya Indie Film Series features seven independent films of, by, and about Latinos. Already generating internet buzz is Without Men, a comedy with a steamy lesbian scene between Eva (Desperate Housewives) Longoria and co-star Kate del Castillo. Set in a remote Latin American village whose men – all of
