EDITOR IN CHIEF’S NOTE STAY CAUTIOUS, PLUS THE POWER OF CHANGE write this week's Editor in Chief Note as I keep an eye on the news that Hurricane Issac is battering the Louisiana and Mississippi gulf coast. We were very fortunate this weekend that Tropical Storm Issac never became a hurricane for us. However, its 60- 65 mile per hour winds served as a stark reminder that we must take Mother Nature seriously, and that hurricane season runs through November 30th – still quite a number of days away. I stayed home for this storm in my apartment on the 20th floor of my building on Brickell Avenue – facing the ocean. This is the same apartment that I got trapped in during Hurricane Wilma in 2005 when one of my floor-toceiling balcony windows popped out – even though my hurricane shutters were closed in both balconies. This caused the wind pressure to hold my front door shut so tight that it was simply impossible to open it up and get out of my apartment to a safer location. I ended up taking refuge in the guest bathroom in the center of my apartment until the hurricane's eye passed over Miami, giving us a period of calmer weather. I was then able to open the front door and walk down twenty flights of stairs to the safety of our very secured building lobby. That day made me realize that even hurricane shutters may not be able to protect me and, to this day, I remain very apprehensive when a storm comes our way because I experienced first hand what it can do. I also saw how it completely destroyed several of my neighbors' apartments and many other office and apartment buildings on Brickell Avenue. I was fortunate that my apartment experienced very little damage from Wilma and I made it through unhurt. Some of my neighbors were not so lucky. One of them was seriously injured when a bedroom window exploded and sprayed him with glass. I was also very glad that Issac turned out to be just a tropical storm, but want to caution all of us that there could be several other storms to come, and we must take them all seriously. Even if they all end up not becoming powerful hurricanes – something I sure hope is the case. Do not get complacent the next time a storm comes! On another note, I read a really uplifting story this week about the power of influencing change. The San Francisco 49ers became the first NFL team to make an “It Get's Better” video. Sean Chapin, one of their fans, rallied more than 16,000 other people to sign his Change.org petition calling on the 49ers to become the first NFL team to do so. You can watch the video by going to www.wiremag.co/getsbetter49ers If you have a passion for something and want to promote change, become one of the millions of people around the world who are taking action and leveraging the power of Change.org to do so. You can make a difference or even save some lives if you do so!

KEN'S QUICK TIPS BY KEN HUNT

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR WORKOUT - PART 1 e all know how busy life can be. And sometimes we forget the basic rules and guidelines for working out. So here is part one of my “tip sheet” with basic guidelines to make the most of your workout. Stay tuned for part 2 next week. Limit your workouts to 30-40 minutes. Though the tendency of some people who really want to get a lot out of their workouts is to spend a lot of time at the gym, the truth is that after 30 or 40 minutes the benefit isn’t as great. High-intensity workouts. If you’re just starting out with exercise, it’s best to take it slow. If you’re running or cycling, for example, build up your endurance for at least a month before you get into anything more intense. That means going at a rate where you can easily talk without being out of breath. Protein. Many people don’t pay enough attention to getting the protein their muscles need to rebuild. If you don’t, you are going to get very little out of your workout, as both cardio and strength workouts require protein for building muscles. I recommend either whey or soy protein shakes. Water. Be sure to hydrate throughout the day. It takes a couple of hours for your body to absorb the water, so you can’t just drink right before exercise. Make it a habit to drink water regularly throughout the day. Carbs. Although the low-carb craze might say otherwise, carbs are our body’s main source of fuel. If you do intense workouts you will need carbs, or you won’t have enough energy. If you do a shake, be sure to include carbs – or a banana is a great source of low fiber/high glycemic carbohydrates that you need for exercise. Shake before and after workout. It’s best to take a protein/carb shake just before your workout and then just after. Taking it before your workout increases the flow of amino acids to your muscles during training, giving them the building blocks they need. After the workout, the shake stimulates muscle growth. Also take a small protein/carb meal 60-90 minutes after a workout – a meal replacement bar would work fine. Slow lifting. Many people contract their muscles slowly and then release more quickly. However, if you lift slowly in both directions, you are maximizing each move. Lift and lower to a 5-second count in each direction. Heavier weight. When you’re starting out, it’s best to start with lower weights so you can focus on good form. But once you’ve gotten your form down, it’s best to lift the heaviest weights you can lift while still keeping good form. Don’t sacrifice form for heavy weights – that is ineffective. But heavy weights, with good form, can give you better results in a shorter amount of time

CURBING YOUR URGE THIS LABOR DAY WEEKEND

LUIS MORERA

PETER RAUHOFER

Can you tell Wire Magazine's readers what they should expect at the upcoming Labor Day Weekend URGE party?

How does the energy of the Miami scene compare to that of others you have spun at internationally?

People can expect a fun party with a great crowd. We are focusing on the basics of the party scene, which are great music and great energy. URGE has always been a musically driven event.

Like every destination that has lots of sun, people are just happier and have more energy.

How will this party be better than previous parties? Any new additions or surprises? I think that the fact the party is going back to where it was held last Labor Day at Cameo is already a big plus, since our patrons have so many great memories from the venue and are familiar with the layout – which makes the party more FUN. We hired some of the hottest male dancers in the country to add a sexual element to the party. How do you pick your roster of DJs for URGE? We have two main DJs, Abel and Peter Rauhofer, but we do use other DJs to open for them. Every party, bar or club I visit, I try to pay attention to people's reaction towards the DJ’s music, as well as how talented they are at mixing and song selection. URGE is notorious for its beautiful dancers. How do you select the dancers and what are the criteria? I just put myself in the position of the patrons and ask myself, "What kind of guy would be the one I would like to see on stage?" while making sure he has the necessary dancing skills. Nothing is worse than a hot looking dancer who has no rhythm! Venues such as Dream, Cameo, and Ice Palace have previously hosted URGE, any plans to expand the party to another venue in the future? Yes, for White Party we are excited to be taking URGE to Club Space in Downtown Miami. We are always looking at new venues and ways of improving what we offer the public. Anything else you would like to tell Wire Magazine's readers about this Labor Day Weekend's URGE party? Last year our Labor Day event exceeded our attendance expectations and sold out. Get your advance tickets at UrgeMiami.com and save money while being assured of entry.

You dropped a couple of new circuit anthems this summer, such as “Where Ya’ Goin,” “Timebomb” remix and the “Let’s Have a Kiki” remix. Can fans anticipate you to drop any additional new material during your URGE set? I always work on new stuff and of course I will premiere some exclusives for Miami. Do you feed off the crowds energy when you spin at circuit events or do you just go “in the zone?” It is important to read a crowd and feed off their energy. It’s a give & take effect. What is the difference between spinning at a regular EDM venue vs. spinning at a circuit party? I have been spinning for 27 years now, mainly in gay clubs. The new generation refers a "gay party" to a "circuit" party these days. Gay parties came from the underground back in the day, which almost doesn’t exist anymore. Did you ever think that you would amount to the level of success and notoriety you have reached as one of the top circuit DJs in the world? I always needed a challenge. I was the resident DJ at the infamous Roxy in New York for 8 years that was basically just like a circuit party these days, but back then that word didn’t even exist. So my roots are kind of in the "big room,” and I automatically moved on to be a big room DJ. Why did you decide to spin at URGE for Labor Day this year? Because the party last time went very well and I had this date available.

TOP TRAX

BY DJ FR8-0

AND THE WINNER IS… hat began as the Grammys for the MTV generation has evolved into a free-for-all for music icons to show us just how outrageous they can really be. Who can forget Lady Gaga’s bloody rendition of “Paparazzi” or Britney & Madge’s smooch seen around the world? Yes, the VMA stage has seen some crazy shit over the years! Here’s my take on who should take home the coveted Moonman on September 6th.

BEST POP VIDEO As much as I love watching Adam Levine go from buttoned-up bank exec to gritty action hero, Maroon 5’s “Payphone” lacks any groundbreaking visuals (besides Adam) to make it Moonman worthy. Same goes for teeny-bopper rivals, One Direction (“What Makes You Beautiful”) and Bieber (“Boyfriend”). Personally, I’d bet my headphones on Rihanna’s mindblowing “We Found Love” over Fun’s slow-mo bar brawl “We Are Young” on this one.

BEST MALE VIDEO By skipping the big-budget sets, location shots and epic choreography, there was only one vid that stood out for me. It wasn’t Usher’s “Climax”, Bieber’s “Boyfriend” or Frank Ocean’s “Swim Good”. And it sure as hell wasn’t Chris Brown’s “Turn Up the Music” (or anything else from him for that matter). Drake’s stripped-down “Take Care” proves that you don’t need to take over the club or hire gorgeous models to make a sexy video.

BEST NEW ARTIST This is one of those categories that’s about as objective as a Prom Queen election. We all have our opinions of who should win the crown (or Moonman), but in the end it’s just another popularity contest. Since tweeny boy bands and bubble gum tracks make my ears bleed, One Direction, The Wanted and Carly Rae Jepsen are out. As much as I admire Frank Ocean’s brave choice to out himself to the world, Fun’s “We Are Young” has inhabited my head for months and won’t be getting evicted anytime soon.

BEST FEMALE VIDEO Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fiercest diva of them all? Poor Selena Gomez doesn’t stand a chance in this crowd and Nicki Minaj is about as original in “Starships” as a cover band in a karaoke bar. Normally I’d have a meltdown choosing between my girls, Beyoncé, Rihanna and Katy. But Katy’s “Part of Me” not only inspires us to kick heartbreak in the nuts, it’s a salute to our brothers and sisters in the armed forces who proudly protect us every day.

BEST DANCE MUSIC VIDEO I was originally set on Avicii’s “Levels” as my pick for this category. Then I got an eyeful of THE most outrageous video I’ve ever seen. Duck Sauce takes OMG to a whole new level in “Big Bad Wolf.” The “Barbara Streisand” boys’ new track didn’t get nearly as much airplay as the competition, but the hilarious vid definitely earned my vote over Calvin Harris, Skrillex and Martin Solveig. Me meo!

Saturday Night Bash @ Discotekka

photos by Juan Saco Mironoff Discotekka, downtown’s largest gay dance party celebrated the birthday of resident DJ Carlos G with Superstar DJ Eric Ensastigue, direct from Mexico. And as always, spectacular shows by Gina DiAngelo, TP Lords, and Darylin La Fontaine.

VIDEO OF THE YEAR Between Dr-Ihanna’s “Take Care”, Katy’s “Wide Awake” and Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” there are definitely some worthy candidates vying for this spot. Then there’s M.I.A’s “Bad Girls” (seriously?). But if anyone should take the VMA’s top honor it should be Melina Matsoukas for her stunning direction of RiRi’s “We Found Love”. Its gritty storyline, pops of color and surrealistic style are as much a treat for the eyes as the #1 dance anthem is to the ears.

ON THE GO TRAVEL: NEW ZEALAND

SHOPPING BAG DOME PIECES

GET IT ON! BY DANE STEELE GREEN Image Credit: © Aleksandar Mijatovic

y then, winter will have the Northern Hemisphere in the doldrums, but it’s a free-for-all south of the equator — waaaaaaay south — as New Zealand, the land of kiwis and hobbits, gears up for its premier gay event on the calendar, Auckland’s Get It On! Big Gay Out on February 10, 2013. When Durex condoms sponsors an event, chances are that this is going to be one hell of a party. Taking place in Coyle Park, technically just west of Auckland in the suburb of Point Chevalier, this is when the country that calls itself “the most British of the British Isles” (its still part of the British Commonwealth; Queen Elizabeth II remains Head of State. Go fig!) pulls out all the stops. However, attendees should know this is not exactly a circuit party, it is more of a Bonanza-o-Pride for LGBTs of shapes, sizes, experience, intentions, and family units spread out over the entire expanse of Coyle Park. We’re here, we’re queer, and we’re taking over. So what happens at such an all-encompassing event in a country where there are more sheep than people? Plenty. This is a concentrated one-stop-shop to see how New Zealand gets its gay on, from the seething sea of man flesh to more milk-andcookies venues—there’s a kid’s section, for Pete’s sake. At last year’s event, Andreas Derleth took top honors at the Mr. Gay New Zealand contest (and went on to win Mr. Gay World), so expect a similar sea of hot kiwis doing hot kiwi things. Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Bananarama, the Human League, and Goldfrapp have all passed through (no word yet if Kimbra, the native New Zealander that gave as good as she got in Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” will make an appearance, but it would totally rule). But considering the website has a video primer on how to have anal sex—just in case you still haven’t gotten that part down yet—don’t think the Big Gay Out is entirely vanilla. Auckland is the country’s dominant city and biggest gay mecca, having been voted the 15th “gayest city in the world,” a good time is guaranteed. So go on and give the fiery Eye of Sauron an eyeful. If there was ever a deity that really needed to get some, he qualifies. For more information, and that primer, go to www.getiton.co.nz.
