EDITOR IN CHIEF’S NOTE IT IS TIME TO PEAK IN BEYOND THE KEYHOLE OF MARK'S HOUSE uesday afternoon I had the great pleasure of meeting with Mark Lowe to get caught up and get a sneak peak inside the new House he will soon open in Miami. Mark's House will be SICK! His artistic dream to design and build the House of the future as a living, ever-changing “piece of art,” nightclub, and performance space is a reality that all of us will be able to see and enjoy during his grand opening and beyond. House will be an ever-changing environment with a core group of performers that will create art on a weekly basis in a gorgeous, voyeuristic space where customers will be welcomed to the different spaces of a House built to entertain, shock, and have fun in. Visit www.housenightclub.com to get a preview of things to come and join their list to get your key and gain access to the House of the future. Wire Magazine will be working with Mark Lowe and the House team during upcoming issues to provide you with a preview of House, a grand opening cover story, and follow up stories that will give you a view inside the new House, its people, and performers. What Mark has built is unlike any other space I have ever seen and his artistic genius will bring a whole new dimension of entertainment and nightlife to Miami. So stay tuned. It is time to peak in beyond the keyhole!

On a completely different note, I also have to speak out this week on the Republican House of Representatives Todd Akin controversy. Our country has seen some great political leaders that have shaped our nation to the place I am proud to call home. However, every once in a while a very stupid, selfish politician comes along that shows his true colors by opening his big mouth and then tries to explain that he or she “misspoke” – but to no avail.
Official Photography Studio Image1stmiami.com
It is time for Todd Akin to find another profession beyond politics and quit embarrassing himself, the Republican Party, Congress, and the United States of America. He must definitely end his bid to become a Senator because he is never going to win. In addition, he should also just go home and find something else to do. The women of this country deserve much better than a member of Congress that believes what Akin said about a pregnancy product of a woman being raped: “From what I understand from doctors, that's really rare. If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

It is clear to me that we did not need to send NASA's $2.5 billion Curiosity Rover to Mars to find out what martians look like. We could have just saved all that money and gone to Missouri to find a martian who exemplifies the worst example of John Gray's famous book titled Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus. Seriously, Todd Akin, please just go home – or are you so afraid that you will never be able to find a job in the private sector, like most hard working American taxpayers earning a living to pay you a nice salary, benefits, and retirement so you can make such ludicrous, insensitive comments? LOOKING GOOD IN RECOVERY BY KEN HUNT
RECOVERY TIPS TO MAXIMIZE YOUR WORKOUT Have you ever asked a question about post-training recovery and received the standard “Drink your protein shake,” as the answer? While this is valuable advice – as little as six grams of protein has been shown to be beneficial – there’s a little more to it than that if you want to perform at your best level. The faster you can recover, the quicker you can build muscle. What if you could recover as quickly as possible after any training session to speed up the healing process, get your energy back and be ready to train faster? Here are some quick tips to speed up your post-workout recovery and get you ready to tackle the day or even train later: Before the end of your workout, spend about 10 minutes taking your intensity levels down. In a cardio session, this is referred to as the “cool down” phase. In weight training, you rarely see it, but a cool down is important. Stretch after exercise to maintain flexibility. A full body stretching session is recommended. Five to seven minutes is all it takes. Lactic acid is flushed during this session. Since your muscles are already warm, this makes it easier. Start drinking fluids - especially those with carbohydrates during your cool down and stretching sessions. Consuming as little as six grams of protein after exercise has been shown to increase protein synthesis. To avoid muscle cramps, dehydration and to stabilize blood volume, you should replace fluids and electrolytes after exercise. This includes sodium. If you are eating salt your foods to replace sodium. Sleep is necessary for full recovery. How much sleep can depend on the individual and the circumstances, but generally a six to eight hour range will cover most people. Don’t get caught up in some number, just remember that you grow and recover quickly when you get adequate rest. Never underestimate the value of your recovery routine. Remember: tomorrow’s training session is only as good as today’s recovery.

Contributors: Jesse Spencer and Antwyone Ingram
o who is this Davey Wavey guy you may ask? For those of you who have not had the pleasure of enjoying his YouTube videos, you are about to find out. If you already know of Davey, you will learn a lot more about him in this Wire Magazine cover story interview. I first heard of Davey when Jesse Spencer, Associate Publisher of Wire Magazine, suggested that we made one of his videos our Video of the Week on www.wireweekly.com. I ended up watching several of his videos and couldn't stop laughing. After doing a little homework I learned that Davey Wavey is not just another pretty face on YouTube, he has actually become a YouTube personality with more than 80 million video views in 165 countries around the world. Davey has also used his YouTube fame to become one of the leading online voices for the LGBT community. Davey uses his YouTube videos to spread messages of love and acceptance, plus some racy and really funny stuff. He is also a very buffed certified personal trainer and has launched several fitness programs and videos that will help you get in shape if you also watch his fitness YouTube channel.

"I don't really believe in failure" - Davey Wavey
DAVEY WAVEY TALKS YOUTUBE LIFE WITH WIRE MAGAZINE Check out what Davey Wavey had to say when we caught up to him in Rhode Island. For people who don’t know, who is Davey Wavey? I’m just a silly, irreverent gay guy from Rhode Island who just so happens to make YouTube videos that a lot of people tend to watch. My videos tend to be very gay, and are often about dating, coming out, self-acceptance or sex. Though they’re a bit gratuitous at times, they have a good, positive message at their core, and, to date, they’ve been seen by more than 80 million people in 165 countries around the world. It’s crazy! What makes Davey Wavey tick? Love, goofiness and the occasional penis joke are my fuels of choice. How do you make a living? I make my living from a combination of two things. On one hand, I earn revenue from the ads that run before and alongside my YouTube videos. Though it’s all really technical, there’s a third party advertising network that manages my ad spots. As the advertisers pay the network, the resulting revenue is divided up between the ad network, YouTube and myself. On the other hand, as a certified personal trainer, I also sell fitness programs through my Davey Wavey Fitness blog. Each year, I launch two different products: one in early summer and one at the year’s end. They’re a huge hit with my followers, and a lot of fun to make. And so that’s how I run the Davey Wavey empire. What do you do on a regular workday? Secretly, I’m very much a basic bitch, and there’s a lot that goes into the videos and content that I create. A lot of it, no one ever sees. There are a lot of meetings with accountants and lawyers and advertisers, filming and editing, writing blog posts, interviews, managing payroll, working with my assistant and drafting emails. In a lot of ways, it’s just like running any other business, but, at the end of the day, I absolutely love what I do and it hasn’t felt like I’ve worked a day doing it yet. Who are your heroes and why? I know that this is totally cliché, but I really look up to Oprah. On a much, much larger scale she’s done something that I’d love to do – which is leave the world with a little more love. I think she’s a huge inspiration for doing something positive with her platform and I often ask myself, “WWOD?” What would Oprah do? What is your biggest success? The people who watch my videos – "blog buddies," as they’re called – are incredible people. Most recently, I was approached by a gay church in Toronto about raising money for an LGBT refugee. Because being gay is punishable by the death in the refugee’s home country, the individual was facing imminent persecution. The church didn’t have the $12,000 to facilitate the rescue, and so the blog buddies stepped up to the plate and donated the full amount within 24 hours. Everyone talks about how the internet is this terrible place of bullying and hate, and while that all does happen, there’s also another narrative that gets much less attention. Here, a group of people came together and saved the life of a stranger. It’s beautiful and I couldn’t be more proud.
I don’t really believe in failure. I once heard a great quote from Wayne Dyer about how we don’t really succeed or fail – we just produce results. We can judge those results as bad or good, or we can just learn from the outcomes and move on with our lives. Having said that, with 550 videos, I occasionally do make missteps and say or do things that I’d like to take back. I’m only human – but I’m quick to own up to my transgressions when they occur. They’re always great teachable moments for me and they undoubtedly open my eyes to new perspectives and viewpoints.

What was your biggest failure and what did you learn from it?
DAVEY WAVEY TALKS YOUTUBE LIFE WITH WIRE MAGAZINE Why are you always shirtless? Ha. First of all, I’m not always shirtless. I’m often shirtless. And it’s a question that I get asked a lot. When I started making YouTube videos five years ago, I would just turn on my webcam and share what’s on my mind. Because I’m usually shirtless in the comfort of my own home, it felt weird to put on a shirt just for my videos. Today, things are a bit fancier, but the shirtlessness has become a bit of a trademark for me. I like to say that we’re born without clothes. The real question isn’t why I’m shirtless, but why everyone else puts them on.
hard to do justice to a really substantive topic in just 90 seconds of video content on YouTube. Has your video blog made you a recognizable figure among the gays when you step out? It has! It’s always great meeting the people who watch and comment on my videos. After all, it’s only because of them that I’m able to do the work that I do, so I’m incredibly grateful.

I’m heading to Manchester, England for their Pride celebration and then coming back to Rhode Island for my sister’s wedding. TOP TRAX

FLIX
BY ALYN DARNAY
ALEX CLARE
THE LATENESS OF THE HOUR iami is no stranger to late nights--packed clubs, pulsating beats by world-famous DJs, and drinks till dawn. We practically perfected the concept. Why else would there be so many songs written about us? And if a 5 a.m. last call is way too early for your bedtime, there’s always an after-hours party going on somewhere. For those who are more inclined to spend their evenings in, yet still get the occasional late night cravings, a good house party is only a phone app away (you know who you are). Either way, the old saying “don’t be tardy to the party” has been completely lost on us. So when a friend recommended I check out Alex Clare’s debut album, I really shouldn’t have been surprised to find that what I thought was a new album is actually over a year old. But just like the aged spirits rushing through our heads during the wee hours of the weekend, the 2011 album The Lateness of the Hour has only gotten better with time. Produced by Beyoncé alums, Diplo & Switch, the 12-track debut abandoned the tired formula of more established artists and created a whole new recipe for the future of pop. Never mind the fact that Alex’s voice alone can school almost all of our current chart-toppers (without an ounce of auto-tune). But layer his soulful vocals over a symphony of dubstep, drum-n-bass, rock and dancehall beats and you’ve got a sound way ahead of its time. Originally released in July of 2011, The Lateness of the Hour got its second wind 10 months later when the single, “Too Close” was used in an ad for Microsoft Internet Explorer. I don’t know if it helped Microsoft or not, but Clare’s record sales spiked, the single reached #4 on the UK charts and the album peaked at #21 on the Billboard Hot 100. The TV spot also landed the new artist some muchneeded exposure, connecting him with new fans around the world faster than you can say “Like.” From the instant the lead track “Up All Night” kicks off with a rock-heavy guitar riff and dancehall beat you can already tell Lateness isn’t your typical pop album. But it’s the raspy pipes and Rasta rhymes delivered from a 25 year old Brit that really throw you for a loop. The surprises keep coming all the way down to the acoustic closer “I Won’t Let You Down,” each track better than the last thanks to Clare’s flawless voice and songwriting. With genres like dubstep and drum-n-bass just barely breaking through the commercial glass ceiling, it’s no wonder this album spent so much time under the radar. Maybe now with pop icons like Britney, Pitbull and LMFAO featuring a taste of the underground sound in their mainstream releases, Alex Clare may still get his fair shot at the spotlight. Better late than never! If you’re a recording artist, musician or producer and would like your work featured in TOP TRAX, hit me up at Alfredo@wireweekly.com 14 | wire magazine | issue #34, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter

’m going to ask you to use your imagination here for one minute. I want you to pretend you’re a writer, who by a very young age has already written the greatest book of your generation. You’re now 29 years old and you’re sitting by your typewriter (if you don’t know, a typewriter is the writing tool everyone used before the computer, Google it!) and you realize you’ve nothing more to say. You said it all in your first and only book. So you sit in front of the “damn thing” and sit and stare at it, day after day, week after week. Everyone is a fan and has been pressing you for the next book for years. But you just stare. Then one day, your shrink suggests you write about your problem as if from another person’s perspective. You think it’s a stupid idea, but then a dream you have of a beautiful woman stirs you into action. You sit down and start typing about her, very, very vividly, after all, you’re a great writer and that’s what great writers do. Now here’s the tricky part…you write her so well that she comes to life right in front of you. What do you do next? How do you deal with it? How do you come to terms with it? That is the premise of Ruby Sparks. An incisive, well-acted and often funny look at the messy complications of what would appear to be the most picture-perfect of relationships. You’re going to enjoy this one a lot, it’s a truly satisfying, offbeat ro-
mance, rife with great writing and wonderful performances. Brought to the screen by the wonderful directing duo who gave us Little Miss Sunshine, Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris (a couple in real life), the film asks deep questions about man/woman relationships, and provides some very unsettling insights as it packs an emotional punch that you just don’t expect. The whole film sneaks up on you and grabs you when you’re not looking. The film was written by newcomer Zoe Kazan, and stars her and Paul Dano (also a couple in real life). Their on screen chemistry is palpable, a complete joy to watch. Ms. Kazan is one of those rare actresses that light up the screen, she’s one to watch in the coming years, and Paul Dano is the perfect foil for her joyous life energy. Watching the two of them together is truly a bit of magic. Joining in the fun and delivering great cameo performances are Annette Bening and Antonio Banderas as Paul Dano’s mother and step father, and Elliott Gould as his shrink/advisor. If you’re looking for a nice little indie film to spend the evening with, you can’t go wrong with Ruby Sparks. So let the sparks fly, and try to catch this one.

RIO? GRAND!
HOW ABOUT A FOCUS ON BY DANE STEELE GREEN rue fact: This year, thanks to its world-famous Carnival, Rio de Janeiro saw its population jump by a million souls as 24-hour party-people descended from all over to take part in one of the most colorful events on Earth. It’s time to check out the boys from Ipanema! So imagine what the party will be like with 2 million, because that’s what Rio, Brazil’s Cidade Maravilhosa (“Marvelous City”) and one of the continent’s most gay-friendly, is revving up for when the city’s Pride Week kicks into full, body-glittered gear. Taking place October 9 - 14, and all but commandeering the world famous Copacabana Beach, this year’s Pride theme, Somos Todos Iguais Perante a Paz - Toda Violencia Deve Ser Crimea ("We're All the Same Before the Peace - All Violence Should be a Crime") is not only a demand for equality, but is a sly play on words to the nation’s constitution, wherein is the line "We're the same before the Law." As North America enters autumn, South America enters spring, and travelers can expect beach-conducive weather hovering steadily in the 80s. Gay-centric events are on deck for the entire week, but far and away the biggest of them all is the 17th Rio de Janeiro Gay Pride Parade on October 14th. What it may lack in the extravagant floats seen at Carnival, it more than makes up for in being a seething cauldron of pure sex-flesh. With a few rainbow banners sprinkled in for modesty color. Keep in mind that for all the partying going on in town, Rio’s beaches are world class, and several are gaygaygaygaygay. The most famous gay beach spot in Rio is a bit to the east of the cross-street Farme de Amoedo and easy to spot; just look for the rainbow flags (that are up year-round) on all the beach vendors – they know their clientele. Here you can rent beach chairs and umbrellas, have a soothing massage, sip fresh coconut water or a caipirinha (the national cocktail, and yes, it’s even codified), and make friends with locals. A little Steele advice: In the summer this area can be extremely crowded, on Sundays so much so it’s hard to get to the water. The second-place, gay-friendly stretch of sand is Coqueirão, easy to spot because of the particularly tall coconut tree near lifeguard station Posto 9. And then there is Copacabana. Here is an area known as Bolsa, popular not only with gay men, but also the transgendered community. It is located right across from Hotel Copacabana Palace; the landmark structure building that dates back to the ‘20s. Trans-girls in Rio have an uncanny knack for attracting very hot men, and if you are a visitor you are welcome to enjoy the sight. For more information go to: www.gaypridebrazil.org/rio-de-janeiro. WORKPLACE PROTECTIONS? BY MICHAEL W. SASSER few months ago, when the President announced his official change of heart on the issue of same-sex marriage, I was not among those commentators who immediately wet myself. So what? He was almost a decade behind former Vice President Dick Cheney and no one really believed the Prez’s previous position – you know, the one that he then-shared with villainous Chick Fil-A. He was always going to pander for gay votes (and most importantly, dollars from the gay one-percenters in Hollywood and Manhattan). Big deal. At the time, though, I opined that if equal rights were really a big deal, then the President, should make sure equal marriage rights is an item on the official party platform. At least that would be more than just more words. Happily, a party committee has voted to do just that and the party itself will vote on it at the Democrat National Convention. Unless it gets scuttled for political reasons, it seems likely to be included in the platform this year. Now, does this have any effect in the real world? No, but at least it elevates pandering to a slightly higher level when we’re included in the infrastructure. But there was another, less noted component of new language being worked into the party platform that could have far greater ramifications in the future. Included is language committing the Democrat Party to champion non-discrimination in work policies for LGBT individuals. Once again, no actual promise of policy, but in this case, that isn’t the point. You see, gay marriage hijacked equal protections on the gay agenda, driven both by the overwhelming influence in the movement of women, and also because it gave leaders a goal they could achieve in part without major congressional action. However, as of this moment gays can be arbitrarily fired from work because of their sexual orientation, in way too many parts of the country. There is no federal protection. Although I am not a major proponent of same-sex marriage – or any marriage for that matter – I am happy to see it become more common and to be part of the Democrat platform. As I see it, the fight is over. It’s a done-deal. Mechanisms of government can hold it up, but the American public has reached the point where it is fine with the idea, so it is inevitable. Federal protection for gay men and women in the workplace, though, remains elusive. Hey marriage is nice. Being able to support one’s alternafamily is even better. In my mind, the latter should precede the former. I’m responsible that way. It would seem to me that even some opposed to gay marriage would support nondiscrimination laws. If so, then public support would lead to change. In my observation, one of the reasons there has been no movement on workplace protections for gays is that, simply, the marriage thing stole the press. Well, ok then. Time to pivot focus perhaps. Nice to see I’ll have some moral support if I visit the right state to get married. Now can we talk about how we pay for the wedding when it is not possible for gays to have job security in a big portion of the country?
