LOOKING GOOD

THE END OF SUMMER – FITNESS TIPS FOR AUGUST! BY KEN HUNT The end of summer is almost here and the fall will be fast approaching. Summer is usually the time of traveling, spending long days enjoying friends and family, and sometimes, not really paying attention to our eating habits. So, I thought I’d give you a jump-start on wrapping up your summer and give you some healthy eating tips to get ready for fall to drop those few pounds that might have crept on when the sun was shining. Tip #1: Eat breakfast. A quick and protein-filled breakfast can start raring your metabolism for the rest of the day. Got 5 minutes? Cook up an egg with some lean ham and put it on a whole wheat wrap. This wrap is completely portable! If cooking is just not going to happen, then a smoothie is the very best thing to do. Blend yogurt, fresh fruit and a little ice, and you’re good to go. You can also take out the yogurt and replace it with a tablespoon of natural peanut butter. Tip #2: Enjoy what the end of summer has to offer. There are 2 really great and incredible nutritious foods in season right now: berries and tomatoes. Eating food at its peak is both economically smart and ensuring that you will have the very best tasting produce. There are endless healthy recipes that utilize berries and tomatoes. Here is one I love: Quick Cucumber and Tomato Salad. Dice 1 large cucumber into 1 inch cubes, dice 2 large tomatoes into 1 inch cubes, chop ¼ of 1 medium red onion, place together in a large bowl. Vinaigrette: 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, 1 tablespoon of champagne vinegar, salt and pepper to taste. Whisk together, and drizzle over veggies. You can enjoy this alone or on top of a bed of mixed baby greens.

Tip #4: Walk, walk, walk! Can't make it to the gym? Now that summer is over, the weather in most parts of the country becomes ideal for walking. Walking one hour can burn anywhere from 150 to 450 calories, depending on your size and how fast you walk. Over the course of just a few months, those calories add up! If possible, I suggest you bring an iPod or a radio headset. Tip #5: Join a class. Joining a class at your gym is a great way to not only get yourself out of the house and working out but many times you'll meet others who are motivated to workout. This is good because often times agreeing to meet at class will increase your odds of getting you in the class. By following these simple guidelines, you can assure yourself of not only a healthier body but a healthier attitude as well.

Tip # 3: You don't need to keep your summer workout schedule. One of the things I hear from gym members is their schedule doesn't permit them to go to the gym as much, so they abandon any and all workouts until the following summer. Instead of stopping all together, set a realistic schedule for your fall workouts. Although it may not be as often or as long as your previous schedule, it's important to maintain some form of workout. By simply maintaining, you can guarantee fewer pounds gained over the course of a few months.

Waterworks 6.0 @ Discotekka

photos by Henry Perez, Wire Magazine Downtown’s only gay dance party delivered one of the most anticipated parties of the year as Waterworks 6.0 hit the club. Partygoers got soaking wet with the most outrageous foam party in Miami.

BY DANE STEELE GREEN ocated on the sunny Bay of Banderas on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, most of Puerto Vallarta’s modern history has been that of a premier resort... and more. The city has been off and running ever since it was put on the map in the 1960s as the setting for Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and their notorious extramarital affair during the filming of Night of the Iguana. Why break with tradition? This November, from the 21st to 25th — the week of Thanksgiving, so you know you’ll have some vacation time on hand — the city hosts Vallarta Fever, five fun-filled days of fun-filled gays and who knows how many affairs. The action is spread out over the city, its hotels, and its beaches for the week; this is by no means an event contained to a few dark corners. Puerto Vallarta is a big place, but the hard and fast rule of where to seen and be seen depends on the sun: if it’s up, the action is sure to be at the gay stretch of sand, the famous Lido Beach. If the moon is up, time to head to Club Mañana, Club Papi, and Freedom, each fueled by a veritable who’s-who of international power-DJs: Hector Fonseca, Tony Moran, Brett Henrichsen and Mexico’s own Cristian Leyva are all on tap to shake Puerto Vallarta down to its foundations. Highlights? That’s a tough one; this fiesta effectively puts Puerto Vallarta on the world party-circuit. However, in a bit of rare foresight, planners thought ahead and evenlyspaced each event throughout the week with very little overlap. Night owls addicted to unabated acoustic shockwaves should set their sights on Friday the 23rd when Tony Moran pounds out the dance tracks at Club Mañana at the Fever’s Latin take on the White Party (properly-hued dress required) and also Saturday the 24th, which is when Hector Fonseca, the official remixer of Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Beyoncé, blasts off at the 10 p.m. - 6 a.m. Latin Fever Party, officially “the” party of the week. Alternatively, sun-worshippers should head off to the two noontime beach parties at Lido Beach on the 23rd and 24th. It all wraps up on the 25th with the Adios Vallarta! Closing Party with a “special guest DJ” that will not be revealed until the actual day arrives. Coy, but you gotta dig the suspense, provided you’re still standing after a week of non-stop lip-smacking Latin love. Go on. Make Liz proud. Go to www.vallartafever.com for more information. BY DJ FR8-0 & RAFA CARVAJAL t’s not easy for a gay bar to build the kind of legendary reputation that Score has. It takes time, persistence, creativity and the right kind of talent. Since the iconic club opened its doors in the late 90’s it’s been remodeled, re-vamped and hosted some of the most famous DJs and recording acts in the world. When they’re not busy overseeing Score’s daily operations, Score owners Billy Kemp and Luis Morera are constantly on the lookout for new talent to wow their guests with. Their stage has welcomed world-famous recording artists like Gloria Estefan and Lady Gaga and their dance floors have been turned out time and time again by world-renowned DJs like Abel, Danny Tenaglia, Manny Lehman, and Alyson Calagna, just to name a few. It was Score that made Lincoln Road the destination for tricks and treats and one of South Beach’s most popular attractions during the bar’s annual Halloween bash. And every year while the rest of us are still trying to decide which tank top we’re going to peel off at the next White, Winter or Pride Party, Score is putting the finishing touches on their biggest event of the weekend. But they don’t just wait for holidays or a circuit weekend to throw a party. Whether it’s a tribute to Tribal, a divine homage to our Divas or something to please the size queen in all of us, Score serves it up right EVERY weekend. I myself have been lucky enough to be a part of the Score family as a former resident and special guest DJ and it’s been one of the highlights of my career. Not only did I get to work with some of the sexiest boys and girls in the biz, but I got to meet some of the DJs that have inspired me ever since the first time I set foot on their dance floor.

I can still remember the excitement I felt the night of Score’s grand opening. The former Kremlin space (remember that?) had closed down and was under renovations for months. We were all dying to see what the new neighbors were going to bring to the local gay nightlife. Once my friends and I made it through the endless line and were finally inside, we knew we were someplace special. While most other clubs at the time were dark spaces with just a couple of bars and a dance floor; Score exploded with pops of color, high-tech lighting, artistic design and a very well-hung gold statue welcoming all the boys and girls to South Beach’s new playground. Over the years, the space has seen its share of facelifts to keep things fresh and keep up with changing times. The dance floor has been widened, bathrooms and spaces remodeled, bars have been relocated (two or three times), a performance stage was built (and moved), a video wall installed and that infamous gold statue is no longer “hung” in the rafters. While Score has also had its fair share of stumbles on the way, it has still managed to keep its doors open and serve up one of the best gay experiences to locals and tourists alike. As the countdown to Score’s big 14 draws closer, excitement over the festivities has been building for both the staff and the community. How will Score top last year’s over-the-top celebration? Who will be there? What kind of surprises will we see? To get those answers I went right to Billy and Luis, the guys who made Score what it is today and have spent the last few months planning an anniversary party we’ll never forget.

SCORE CELEBRATES 14 YEARS OF FUN! Score has been an institution since the first day it opened its doors. How are you feeling right now just days away from your 14th anniversary? We are excited, but, we are also anxious to get the party started. We put a lot of hard work and money into this event. We really wanted to do something different with this anniversary party. Things are changing in the entertainment industry and we wanted to offer more to our loyal customers with this event. What's the new direction of Score? Score will continue to provide locals and tourists with an exciting place to socialize and dance. We will also continue to bring top of the line entertainment (world renowned deejays and fresh themes), as well as supporting non-profit and community organizations and providing a showcase space where up-and-coming talent can be seen. Our readers love your Score Productions events. Can you update us on the development of Score Productions and any new parties we can look forward to? The knowledge of nightlife acquired through Score allowed us to create what we call Score Productions – with the intention of keeping Miami's nightlife exciting by bringing new themes, events, and big productions in large scale clubs. We created a party called URGE, which is a musically driven party that happens on special weekends and holidays. We have also been involved with international productions such as MATINEÉ, CIRCUIT Festival and Brazil's E*JOY. We are happy to announce our next three URGE parties that will happened on: a) Sunday, September 2nd (Labor Day weekend) with Grammy Award winning DJ/producer Peter Rauhofer, b) Friday, November 23 (White Party weekend) with Israeli sensation DJ Aaron and Grammy Award nominee DJ Abel, and Sunday, December 30 (New Year's weekend) – performances to be announced! Tell us what you’ve got planned for the big 14? A lot of us remember how much fun the Lincoln Lane tea dances were in the 90's. So we thought it would be a lot of fun to hit the streets again and create new memories. We are closing Lincoln Lane and barricading an area for the party. We have a huge LED stage, truss system for the lights and the fabric to cover portions of the dance floor to help people keep cool.

THE REAL HOSTESS: ELAINE LANCASTER Notorious for being one of the most sought after hostess in the world, Elaine has welcomed and entertained guests at clubs, benefits, and all kinds of special events including Gay Pride at the Roxy, The Elton John Dance for Life Ballet, Code Blue's New Year's Eve Party in Atlanta, 'An Evening with the Stars' Auction and Show in Dallas, The Aspen Gay & Lesbian Ski Week and White Party Week both in South Beach and Palm Springs. Constantly

Who do you have lined up as your entertainment? Two of Miami's favorite DJs, Tracy Young and Abel. Elaine Lancaster, being the Diva that she is, will host the party. She is going to be appearing on The Real Housewives of Miami again for the 2nd season. Missing Molly, a great house band from Blue Martini, will be performing fun top 40 hits; they are a lot of fun. And of course, we’ll have beautiful go-go boys and girls in sexy outfits.

in demand, Elaine travels from city to city working

There’s no better way to celebrate a legendary club than with legendary DJs. What kind of surprises will Abel and Tracy have up their sleeves for us? Tracy just moved back to Miami so this will be her unofficial welcome home event. She's really happy to be back so I'm sure her set is going to be amazing. As for Abel, he always surprises us. He is a big part of the Score family, so I'm sure he will come up with something. He will be doing a special set for the block party, but he will primarily be playing for the after party inside of Score.

and will be making her latest small-screen appear-

with famous names like Pamela Anderson, RuPaul, Kevin Aviance, Lady Bunny and dozens of other celebs. She’s made cameo appearances in TV and films ance in the second season of The Real Housewives of Miami. Score is thrilled to have the Diva Lancaster hosting their special anniversary!

SCORE CELEBRATES 14 YEARS OF FUN!

ABEL AGUILERA

All this production sounds amazing and expensive. Will there be a huge cover? We feel blessed to be part of the community and to be a successful business on Lincoln Road. This particular event is definitely expensive to pull off and we have had some challenges, but we are used to heavy production costs with our special events. As a way of saying "Thank You" there is no cover for the block party. We are hoping that everyone appreciates what we are doing and we hope this is just one of many more events to come. We are already thinking about our 15 year anniversary!

Born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in Miami, Abel Aguilera has always had a passion for house music. When South Beach became the epicenter of the U.S. circuit scene, Abel reigned supreme as Paragon’s Saturday night Resident DJ. Partiers reveled at Abel’s explosive blend of heavy tribal beats, diva anthems, and retooled classics. With his new status, Abel received headlining offers from clubs and parties all around the world. By 2001, Abel had solidified his position among the elite after-hour DJs. His name is synonymous with two of the circuit’s biggest parties – Gay Disney and New York City’s Alegria – and, along with Chicago-based DJ Ralphie Rosario, created the award winning production and remixing team, Rosabel. Abel’s close relationship with Score has produced many exclusive events featuring regular appearances by legendary mixmaster.

TRACY YOUNG Over the last two decades Tracy Young has taken her irresistible passion for dance music from the underground to the mainstream, going from clubland fame to mainstream celebrity in the process. Even during her early years, Young’s musical prowess made people take notice. It wasn’t long before she translated her work at Interscope Records to a thriving career in the DJ booth that allowed her to bring her one-of-a-kind mix of funk, hip-hop and old-school blend of beats to the masses. Score’s 14th Anniversary party is Tracy’s first local event since her recent move back to the sizzling sand of South Beach. Lincoln Lane will never be the same!

FLIX

BY KEVIN WYNN

Directed by: Lauren Greenfield Cast: Virginia Nebab David Siegel Jackie Siegel

avid and Jackie Siegel, the billionaire couple at the center of Lauren Greenfield’s documentary Queen of Versailles, are epically, encyclopedically vulgar. If Diego Rivera was still around and needed a subject for a scabrous mural depicting the operatic excess of America’s Top One Percent, the Siegels would be an excellent choice. Rivera would paint a caricature. Greenfield’s portrait is more nuanced. Queen of Versailles happens upon the Siegels at the peak of the recent real estate boom, as Westgate Resorts, David’s timeshare empire opens a shimmering new outpost in Las Vegas, where America’s id goes to play. At home in Orlando, Jackie shops, tans, entertains squadrons of beauty queens (she’s a former model and Mrs. Florida herself) and enthuses over the construction of her new home, Versailles, a ninety-thousand-square-foot dream palace, the biggest house in America, a shambling, not yet half-built hulk. Then comes the crash of September 2008 and as the cheap, easy money that has fueled David’s business vanishes, the Siegel’s fortunes contract dramatically. They put Versailles, or more accurately, the shell of Versailles, on the market. It does not sell. The new tower in Las Vegas threatens to drag Westgate into bank-

ruptcy. Thousands of employees are laid off and David spends all his time on the telephone, looking for money. Queen of Versailles is never quite the orgy of schadenfreude most Ninety-Nine Percenters might wish for. The Siegel’s excesses and follies provoke jaw-dropping laughs and teeth-gnashing anger in the first part of the film. Later, when times turn bad, Greenfield has shown us enough of these people that one can almost feel empathy for them. David Siegel’s depressive slide into financial jeopardy is startling; if he were to turn up dangling from a rope it wouldn’t be a surprise. Jackie is another story. She’s remarkably unguarded, in one scene brightly noting that she would never have had eight kids if she couldn’t hire nannies to care for them. Jackie’s All-American melding of optimism and denial, of candor and compassion and compulsive consumerism, makes her a compelling character. And a hilarious one. Jackie renting a car, Jackie shopping for Christmas, Jackie pulling up to a McDonald’s drive-through in a block-long stretch limo: It’s great stuff. And Queen of Versailles is very, very good. Think of it as reality TV, with depth.

DINING

BY RAFA CARVAJAL

SPICE IT UP WITH SOME CUBAN ON OCEAN Images Credit: Larios on the Beach

his year's crop of Miami Spice menus is as diverse as the list of restaurants themselves. Foodies rejoice! There is a lot to choose from the yearly Miami Spice program that brings you prix fixe menus for lunch and dinner at some of the best restaurants in town. This year you can choose between “luxury dining” ($23 for lunch and $39 for dinner) and “fine dining” ($19 for lunch and $33 for dinner). However, a word of caution, just because a restaurant is well-known for its delicious food, it does not mean that you should run out and eat their Miami Spice menu. A couple of my favorite restaurants in town have actually put forth some very disappointing menu alternatives for Miami Spice that are not even worth trying. My recommendation is to visit the Miami Spice website (www.ilovemiamispice.com) to look at the menus for each restaurant for either lunch or dinner. You may end up going to eat at restaurants you did not know about and pass on dining at some top restaurants because their Miami Spice menu leaves a lot to be desired.

tizer Combo: Croqueta, papa rellena and masitas de puerco (ham croquettes, stuffed potatoes and pork chunks).

I love classic Cuban food and a lively dining experience, so this past Friday I decided to venture out and spice it up with some real Cuban food right on Ocean Drive at Larios on the Beach – of Gloria and Emilio Estefan's fame. Larios' Miami Spice dinner menu ($33) offers some appetizing choices, and I had the best flan I have ever tasted in my life. This flan reminded me of the best homemade flan my mom used to make for special occasions by adding condensed milk to the mix when preparing it. It was also great fun to eat outside on Ocean Drive and people watch. Plus we lucked out because the weather on Friday was in the mid seventies with an amazing breeze coming from the ocean that made it seem that summer had ended. Here is what you can look forward to for your Miami Spice dinner at Larios. You have a choice of their “world famous Mojito” or a glass of their Red Sangria to wet your appetite. For the first course appetizer you can choose between: a) Tostones Rellenos: Trio of plantain cups stuffed with shredded beef, Cuban criolla minced beef and shrimp Cuban criolla; Flight of Ceviches: A selection of seasonal fresh seafood ceviches; or Cuban AppeLarios on the Beach, 820 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach, FL 33139. 14 | wire magazine | issue #33, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter

For your entrée your choices include Zarzuela de Mariscos: Lobster, shrimp, scallops, calamari, fish, baby clams and mussels in a homemade Cuban criolla sauce, served with fried sweet plantains; Cuban Churrasco: 10 oz. Tenderized skirt steak grilled to perfection and served with chimi-churri sauce; or Tour of Cuba: A trio of Larios' signature dishes composed of vaca frita de pollo, lechon asado and ropa vieja. With the Cuban Churrasco and the Tour of Cuba you get a choice of two sides from these alternatives: arroz blanco (white rice) or brown rice and black beans, moros (black beans and rice-mixed), maduros (fried sweet plantains), or tostones (fried green plantains). If that wasn't enough food, for dessert you can have Natilla (cuban style sweetened vanilla pudding); Arroz con Leche (traditional Cuban style rice pudding); or Flan de Leche (traditional Cuban style custard topped with caramel).

BY DJ FR8-0 t used to be that a “Hits” album was once the kiss–of-death for a recording artist--a sad, final attempt at reviving a career that had lingered way past its shelf-life. I mean seriously, how many hits did A Flock of Seagulls or Soft Cell really have? But as with every other aspect of the music industry, things have evolved. What was once a four-letter word has become a retrospect of achievements from recording artists who’ve managed to keep our attention for at least a decade. Some even throw in a couple of new tracks for the fan who has everything. Unlike other artists who made it past the 10+ milestone, Jennifer Lopez took the scenic route to becoming the pop icon she is today. The Fly Girl from the Bronx got her start in the early ‘90s as a hip-hop dancer on the hit show In Living Color, eventually busting some moves as a back-up dancer for Janet Jackson. But fading into the background was never Jenny’s style. Without hesitation she set her sights on an acting career, which turned out to be a smart move. Her first leading role in the bio flick Selena (1997) put her in the International spotlight and earned her an ALMA Award for Outstanding Actress, plus a Golden Globe nomination. More leading roles and a second ALMA Award quickly made her the highest-paid Latin actress in Hollywood. But that still wasn’t enough for the Puerto Rican princess.

DESIGN FOR A LIVING WORLD: An exhibition that includes works from designers like Isaac Mizrahi and Kate Spade, at Coral Gables Museum thru October 26.

GRAPHIC INTERVENTION: 25 YEARS OF INTERNATIONAL AIDS AWARENESS POSTERS 1985-2010: Exploring the role of the poster in efforts to prevent HIV/AIDS, continues at the Wolfsonian – FIU Museum thru September 2.

In 1999, with her movie career at an all-time high, J-Lo took a huge risk releasing her debut album On the 6. The anticipation was brutal as the world waited anxiously to hear the sound of Jennifer’s career derailing uncontrollably and smashing into an unidentifiable pile of regret. Much to our surprise, she wasn’t bad. Her debut single “If You Had My Love” became an international hit, taking the top spot in five countries and placing in the top 10 in twelve others. The next ten years became a non-stop drama for Jennifer featuring disappointing albums, multiple failed marriages and tons of negative press. Just when we thought we’d heard the last of J-Lo, she announced her decision to be an American Idol judge and everything changed. Jennifer Lopez became a household name (again). She scrapped the album she’d been working on, revamped her style to fit the club vibe that had taken over pop music and teamed up with Mr. Worldwide himself, (deep breaths, grrls) Pitbull for her comeback track “On the Floor”. The collaboration was another wise move as it did get us all on the floor and put J-Lo on top once again. Dance Again…The Hits really is a walk down memory lane for J-Lovers who’ve followed the divorced (again) diva from the beginning. Although the tracks may sound a bit dated today, the newer additions: “On the Floor”, “Going In” and “Dance Again”, make it very clear that Ms. Lopez won’t be dancing back-up again anytime soon.
