t's no mystery why people all over the world come to Florida for summer vacation – the weather, the beaches and of course the epic publications... oops, I meant parties! It's a wonder the state hasn't named South Beach its new capital yet. What is a mystery to me is how amazing recording artists like Capital Cities seem to appear out of nowhere and rise to the top of the charts faster than high tide at sunset. Their latest single “Safe and Sound” has been making a lot of waves lately since the arrival of their debut album, In a Tidal Wave of Mystery. But are these guys really the perfect storm or just a drop in the bucket?

Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian started dipping their toes in the music pool just a little over two years ago when they released their self-titled debut EP on their own indie label, Lazy Hooks. But before all that, they spent three years writing and composing jingles for commercials and ad campaigns. Apparently, their previous employment experience paid off, because it only took a year for Capital Cities to grab the attention of Capital Records, who signed them on to produce In a Tidal Wave of Mystery. There are so many great things about this album! For starters it was written, composed, produced and mixed entirely by Merchant and Simonian themselves. Not many artists can claim those bragging rights these days, and they've earned the right. Like the buzz-worthy “Safe and Sound,” the rest of the collection boasts a minimal electronic soundscape layered in funk and soulful vocals from start to finish. You won't be swimming in hard-core thumping club tracks here, but that doesn't make it any less danceable.

The fast-paced “Patience Gets Us Nowhere” sings the praises of getting off your ass and going for the love you want, while the mid-tempo “Kangaroo Court” urges you to lose yourself in the chaos of nightlife. Not to be intimidated by the dance floor, “I Sold My Bed, But Not My Stereo,” “Center Stage,” and “Farrah Fawcett Hair” spotlight the pair's genius knack for fusing the classic sound of legendary dance pioneers like Giorgio Moroder with modern icons like Daft Punk while still leaving room for their own unique signature. “Chartreuse,” “Origami,” “Lazy Lies” and “Tell Me How To Live” open the floodgates to a more sublime side of the Cities. And in an unexpected turn, the duo introduces the sultry and elusive vocalist, Soseh into the mix on the ‘80s-inspired “Chasing You.” The set is rounded out beautifully with the upbeat “Love Away,” a simple mantra we should all take to heart.

The pulsating nightlife and club scene may be one of the biggest reasons why the world can't seem to get enough of South Beach, but just like life, there's something to be said about the peaceful moments that make it equally intriguing. Obviously with the subtle ebb and flow of their debut, this concept hasn't been lost on Capital Cities. In a hurricane-filled sea of new music, there's no doubt In a Tidal Wave of Mystery delivers both the calm and the storm.
