MBPD OFFICERS FRANKLY FORTE & ELLIOT HAZZI MUST BE FIRED!!!

As most people can tell you, Miami Beach has become one of the most progressive cities in the country when it comes to LGBT equality. Every single piece of LGBT legislation presented to the Miami Beach Commission has passed unanimously, providing security and ensuring equality for our community.

That is why so many of us were shocked when the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida filed a lawsuit against the City of Miami Beach Police Department for unlawfully targeting, harassing, and arresting gay men.

There has always been speculation that this was happening, but there has never been any solid proof until March 12, 2009 when former Miami Beach resident Harold Strickland was wrongfully arrested for simply reporting police brutality – and it was all caught on audio tape by the Miami Beach Police Department’s own emergency response department.

While walking alongside the west side of Flamingo Park and chatting with his sister on his cell phone, Harold spotted two undercover officers chasing a young guy through the Flamingo Park parking lot. Harold watched as the officers dragged the man to the ground, handcuffed him, and began beating him. The sad part was that the man lived in an apartment building only a few yards away and was just walking home.

As cell phone records confirm, Harold told his sister he

would call her back and, at 1:05 a.m., he called 911.

Harold reported to the emergency dispatch officer at MBPD that the two undercover officers had handcuffed the man, who was on the ground next to a car, and were kicking him “like his head was a football.”

While on the phone with the dispatcher, Harold had attracted the attention of the two officers beating the guy on the ground; they approached Strickland, demanded to know what he was doing, took Strickland’s telephone, and ended his 911 call.

After telling the officers that he was on the phone with 911 because they were attacking the guy, the officers told him, “We know what you’re doing here. We’re sick of all the fucking fags in the neighborhood.” The officers then pushed Harold to the ground and tied his hands behind his back.

While Harold was on the ground, the officers continued to spew anti-gay epithets. They called him a “fucking fag” and told him he was going to “get it good in jail”.

When one officer continued to hurl anti-gay slurs, Harold told them he was going to report them. In response, the officers told him that people like him “disappear every day.”

Afterwards, the officers took Harold to the Miami Beach Police Department where he was charged with loitering and prowling. Here’s the other problem – both officers’ accounts of what took place that night differ in a variety of ways. After filing a lawsuit against the MBPD on behalf of Harold, the ACLU secured depositions from both officers, each providing a completely different story.

The evidence was stacked against the officers and the MBPD – so much so, the City of Miami Beach settled with the ACLU and Harold for an undisclosed amount.

Now you would think that these two officers would have been immediately dismissed while the State held its criminal investigation. Sadly that is not the case.

Officers Hazzi and Forte were just placed on desk duty with no change in compensation. A little more than a year later, the State kicked the investigation back to the Internal Affairs Division of the MBPD, stating that they could not charge the officers with any criminal charges – meaning that these officers got away with at least one known hate crime and who knows how many others, all while sporting a MBPD uniform!

To make matters worse, it is now up to Chief Carlos Noriega and the MBPD Internal Affairs division to decide if these men get to keep their job! Are they crazy!

In a recent meeting with Miami Beach Police Department Public Information Officer Juan Sanchez I was told that these officers could potentially get a slap on the wrist as small as suspension without pay! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?

That is not only embarrassing for the City of Miami Beach, its residents, and more importantly the Miami Beach Police Department, it is also incomprehensible.

I am asking that all Miami Beach residents, visitors, community organizations, and Miami Beach officers demand that these two officers be terminated immediately!

BY THOMAS BARKER PHOTOS PROVIDED BY CIRQUE ELOIZE_ID very year, many of us dread the arrival of the summer. Between the overwhelming heat and the lack of social functions and events, the summer months just seem to be a void in time that we have to experience until the fabulous fall season arrives.

Well, I don’t know about you, but that is certainly not how I feel this year! Hotels like the Fontainebleau, The W, and The Ritz Carlton, among many others, are experiencing 100 percent occupancy, restaurants are still being filled to capacity, and there seems to be an endless supply of events and functions to attend throughout our fair city.

One place that has definitely maintained momentum throughout the summer is the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. This summer, they have continued to provide us with assortment of top-notch productions!

On Friday, July 26th, the Arsht Center will welcome another fabulous production that is sure to mesmerize thousands – Cirque Éloize iD. Hailed by the Montreal Gazette as “a thrilling piece of work, full of attitude, energy and invention,” iD was created by Jeannot Painchaud, founder and artistic director of Montreal’s acclaimed Cirque.

The show is a completely innovative take on the cirque productions, as it blends the urban world of hip hop with the classical beauty of circus performance and theatrics. The high-energy, all-musical spectacle (there’s no spoken word), features an original electronic score composed by Jean-Phi Goncalves (from the indie band Beast) and Alex McMahon, which features a Spanish-language hip-hop number among

other electropop, dance, and vocal tracks. The creative team also features hip-hop choreographer Mourad Merzouki and costumes by Linda Brunelle. iD is the seventh original production from Cirque Éloize. Since it began in 1993, Cirque Éloize has become a world leader in contemporary circus arts, with almost 4,000 performances in more than 400 cities around the globe to its credit. The awardwinning company has enjoyed rave reviews and sold-out engagements at some of the world’s most prestigious festivals and theatres, including Edinburgh International Festival, the Hollywood Bowl, Théâtre du Rond-Point des Champs-Élysées, Sadler’s Wells and the Barbican Theatre. And now you will get to see them in our very own backyard.

I recently caught up with creator Jeannot Painchaud to get a behind the scenes look at Cirque Éloize iD, and what I discovered made me even more excited to see the production!

Check out what he had to say: What does Cirque Éloize mean? “Éloize” is a word originating from the Acadian patois meaning “heat lightning”. It is commonly used in the Magdalen Islands, an archipelago in the heart of the St-Lawrence Gulf, some 200 km off the coast of Quebec where I was born and raised until I came to Montreal to study the art of circus at the Montreal National Circus School.

All seven artists from Cirque Éloize’s first troupe were natives of the islands; the lightening really symbolizes the heat and energy that feed the troupe’s spirit.

Have you been to Miami before? What are you looking forward to most about bringing your show to the Arsht Center?

I personally have been to Miami several times, but this is the first time a troupe from Cirque Éloize will be performing in this beautiful city. When I first met Scott Shiller and we discussed the possibility of presenting iD at the Adrienne Arsht Center, it struck me how Miami is the perfect city to present this show. Miami is young, urban, lively, very trendy, and it loves to party. And so does our show. I felt right away that iD would be a Miami crowd pleaser.

How did the show come about?

With each new creation, we like to integrate different forms of art to the acrobatics. I was yearning to bring an urban kind of energy to the slate, especially break dancing. There are very many similarities between the life of an urban dancer and a cirque artist. For one, the starting point comes from the heart and the soul, not from the head.

I was fascinated by the dynamism of the urban dance scene and the idea of the challenge, the battle. In a cirque production, each artist aims to claim its identity while identifying with the group, which is very similar to a break dancing artist.

In the cirque world, as well as in the dance world, one expresses his identity and his individuality using the body. Then, this becomes the main tool to insert into a group. Dancers and cirque artists are taking the same path to reach the goal.

Who was the creator of the show, and how did he come up with the theme/concept?

After a few trips to South Korea, where I witnessed the bubbling youth opening up to western culture, I felt the need to create a piece that would transmit the energy I felt over there. The inspiration I brought back from South Korea was the trigger for all of this.

I, for one, was the initiator of the project, but like any other project, we need to surround ourselves with other creatives.

When creating a cirque show, I always start with the music, as it is the most important piece of the puzzle for me. For this matter, I called in two excellent Montreal musicians, including Jean-Phi Goncalvez from the famous Montreal independent band Beast and his partner Alex McMahon. Once that was settled, we started working on the visual environment. For this part, I chose to work with Robert Massicotte, who conceived the whole scenography with his partner Alexis Laurence.

tinued working with longtime friend and collaborator Krzysztof Soroczynski, Cirque Éloize’s Head Trainer and Talent Scout who, for one thing, brought a lot to the conception of the actual trampowall in iD. Once we had these three major pieces together, we worked on costumes, make-up, and hair. I chose to work with long time Cirque Éloize collaborators such as Linda Brunelle (costumes), Suzanne Trépanier (makeup), and Pierre Lafontaine (hair).

What other productions have you worked on?

I am the Artistic Director for all Cirque Éloize productions since 1993. I have worked with many directors that have a theater and contemporary dance background. Each time, I wanted to bring an external element to the cirque art in order to transcend it and make it better and different.

I like to invite creatives that don’t know acrobatics.

They bring a new artistic vision that causes us to reinvent ourselves each time.

What is the concept/story?

Sixteen artists on stage, ten circus disciplines, and then the discovery of a world which is new to us, that of urban dances such as breakdance and hip-hop.

I imagined this show at the heart of a city, where the omnipresence of image causes us to lose our reference points. I sought to create an estheticism at the crossroads of comic books, science-fiction movies, and the rich universe of graffiti.

The decidedly rock, electronic, and poetic music, coupled with the presence of video, highlight the show’s playful, energetic, youthful, and urban aspects.

In the middle of this city exists a public place. A public place, as a spot where one can seek refuge and escape anonymity, to express one’s individuality, and affirm one’s identity in order to reclaim possession of public space. It is an area in the city for encounters, a site of passage, a hood where clans confront one another, and where friendships are woven. Where love is created and dissolved.

How is this production different from any other show people have experienced before?

Energy! And also the integration of multimedia projections as a part of the scenario. Each scene represents different places of an imaginary city. It is kind of a middle of the road between reality and a cartoon movie.

that we bring forward each artist’s personality onto to the stage. Choosing a performer is a delicate task and each time we need to replace one, we not only need to look for his or her acrobatic performance skills but we also have to consider his or her multiple talents and personality.

In terms of costume design, how did you develop the look and feel?

What you see on the streets is what you see in the show. We are inspired by street wear. The challenge is to create casual street looking costumes in which our artists are at ease to perform their acrobatics.

What has the response been to the show?

With iD, we have been blessed. Everybody enjoys the show so much. Many of the cities where we have played so far welcomed the show very warmly and the critics have been raving.

Why do you think people have been so receptive to the story?

Finding the performers must be a daunting task. How do you find just the right person for the job?

I think they have been receptive to it because it is very actual, in a sense that it reflects a lot of what is going on in every major city in the world right now; but it is also a story of all times: gangs, clans, love stories, public space to escape and be.

territory, friendship, recognition, and a love is a never ending story.

What are some of the highlights?

It is hard for me to choose one number over another, but I definitively see our trampowall act as one major crowd pleaser, as well as the bike stunts, the aerial silk and rollers, and the dance-contortion acts.

How did you get connected with the Arsht Center?

I knew about the Adrienne Arsht Center by its good reputation. I knew that they were professional and serious people. Once I had a professional meeting in Miami with several people and I met Scott Shiller. After meeting him, it became obvious that he and his team were the right people to work with in Miami.

TOP TRAX: BEYONCÉ BREAKS THE 4TH WALL

When you think of the journey Beyoncé has had throughout her career, it’s amazing to see she’s not only survived, but also dominated the pop music scene on more than one occasion. From her tumultuous days in the female-quintet-turned-trio, Destiny’s Child, to the controversy surrounding her recently terminated business relationship with her father; B has always faced obstacles head-on and with dignity, while other artists just ended up as chum for the media sharks.

Now Beyoncé faces her greatest challenge of all — a follow up to her 2008 masterpiece, “I Am…Sasha Fierce”. On her third solo album Beyoncé (aka Sasha Fierce) ruled the radio with tracks like “Halo”, “Sweet Dreams”, and, of course, the #1 worldwide anthem “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)”. But with all the success of her last album comes the pressure of pulling it together again with fresh new material that can live up to fans’ high expectations without going too far. Judging by their reactions to her latest collection, “4”, it looks like the diva just might have found their sweet spot.

“4” kicks off with the slow jam, “1+1.” What the song lacks in BPMs it makes up for in pure raw emotion as Mrs. Jay-Z pleas for her man to make love to her. This is some baby-makin’ stuff right here, boys and girls! You would think a strong ballad opener would be followed-up by a hot dance floor, thrashing track for a little balance, but in this case you’d be wrong. “I Care” is yet another slow tempo track oozing with Beyoncé’s classic growl eventually rising to effortless wails and notes that would make Mariah a little jealous. To my surprise, “4” continues the ballad triple play with; you guessed it, another slow jam. The stripped down “I Miss You” co-produced

by Shea Taylor hangs on no more than B’s breathy vocals, a light baseline, and synth strings. It’s a nice compliment to the over-the-top production of 4’s first single “Run the World (Girls)”, but we’ll get to that later.

ware! The deceitfully titled “Party” (featuring André 3000 and Kanye West) should have been called “Just Chillin”. The slow-tempo track doesn’t do much to get me ready for a night on the town. But if your idea of a party is a night at home 420-style, then pop the track and light it up, baby! “Rather Die Young”, “Start Over”, and the upbeat “Love on Top” take me back to the more soulful days of pop when R&B queens like Roberta Flack, Rose Royce, and Patti LaBelle ruled the airwaves with their smooth, funky vibe.

One of the biggest surprises in the mix is “Countdown”.

What starts off as an easy, breezy melody suddenly kicks into a fun, fast-paced ride through a typical night out with Beyoncé and her man. Thankfully the beat goes on with “End of Time”; another percussion-heavy track driven by a marching band beat and catchy melody that could easily make this the next single. We’ll have to wait and see. Saving the best for (almost) last, Beyoncé reunites with her “Halo” co-writer Ryan Tedder and the legendary Diane Warren for one final swan song, “I Was Here”. You can hear her sense of peace and fulfillment as she sings: “I wanna leave my footprints on the sands of time / Know there was something that / Meant something that I left behind / When I leave this world / I’ll leave no regrets / I’ll leave something to remember / So they won’t forget / I was here.” Finally, in true diva style our girl closes out the set with the lead single “Run the World (Girls)”. Surprisingly, the track didn’t get much props from the fans or critics compared to the rest of the album. Yet it still managed to peak at #1 on the US Hot Dance Club charts.
