PUBLISHER'S CORNER Dealing With a Rotten Apple. Buyer Beware! Once upon a time, Microsoft was the biggest, baddest, and, sometimes, the most hated technology company in the world by many frustrated customers unhappy with their products and services. Fortunately for our friends at Microsoft, there is a new desperado in town who has become a larger company that also rushes bad products and software to market and makes millions at the expense of their consumers. Welcome to the new rotten Apple! The great Cinderella story of the iPhone has become a less than idyllic experience, as millions of us have recently taken a big bite of a rotten Apple that can certainly make you sick to your stomach. Many of you may have either heard about, or personally experienced, the many dropped calls from your iPhones or loss of reception.

But if you think Apple’s hardware may give you a headache, make sure you run off to get yourself a big bottle of extra strength Tylenol before you open some of your great apps purchased from the Apple App Store. Cause Apple also f*cked this one up royally, as I recently personally learned. Do keep reading to learn more about this! If you stood in line for hours or rushed to get your new iPhone 4, hopefully you were not left handed or happened to grip your phone from the bottom left corner. Because if you did, you could have experience a total loss of reception, as widely reported by some users, only to be told by the Apple man himself, Mr. Steve Jobs, that it was your fault that your iPhone 4 lost reception because you were holding it wrong. It has been widely reported that Steve Jobs emailed an iPhone 4 user who pointed out the problem of reception loss saying: “If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases” – Note: Apple will be glad to sell you a $30 case made in China for cents to prevent the problem they caused in the first place. No apology for rushing a clearly defective product to market. Instead, it is either your fault or we will make you spend more money to fix it. You have to be kidding!

This silly response from Apple was then followed by another even lamer more recent statement: “Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong." So it wasn’t the monkey holding the banana wrong that led to the problem after all, hey Mr. Jobs. Was it? Instead, could it have actually been Apple's lack of product and software testing, in a rush to make millions and keep your stock at such lofty price levels that Apple’s market cap surpassed Microsoft’s, that may have had something to do with it?

To make matters worse, last week I went to scan a business card with my iPhone using the new iOS 4.0 and the app Business Card Reader, which I had bought from the Apple App Store and used many times before, only this time, the app deleted all my iPhone contacts and then corrupted my Entourage contacts database. I won’t bore you with all the details, but after numerous calls and emails to Apple and the app’s developer explaining what happened to me and tons of other users, including an email to Steve Jobs, Apple continued to sell the app in their App Store. Mind you, this app was flooded by iOS 4.0 users giving it a one star rating and stating that all of them also had their contacts wiped out by a defective software not compatible with Apple’s own iOS 4.0.

How can Apple ignore this and keep trying to make money out of this app? Why didn’t Apple take the app down? Why didn’t Apple email everyone who bought this app warning them not to use it with iOS 4.0 because it will delete all your contacts? Why did Apple give me the run around when I called them for help when my contacts got deleted? - even from a supervisor. Because the Apple is now rotten!

So buyer beware; be extra careful these days before you take a bite of your beloved Apple. Rafa For The Publishers Rafa Carvajal: rafa@wireweekly.com Thomas Barker: thomas@wireweekly.com

POST MODERN

By Michael W. Sasser

The Summer of Our Discontent It isn’t just the potentially devastating oil spill. Or the cornucopia of dunces in government hindering the cleanup. And it isn’t just the economy. Ditto the dunce factor. These factors are contributors this year too, but are not the primary reason why many local restaurants are virtually empty, businesses are struggling, and why one Miami Beach business owner recently talked to me about just walking away from his entire inventory.

junkets if they ask too many questions. So, while I might understand the problem and why many business and political leaders won’t be confrontational on the issue, one question has always simply boggled my already overburdened mind.

It’s the summer, a bad summer, and possibly the worst summer in economic terms locally that I can remember. It’s bad because no entity charged with such responsibilities has yet to adequately address the problems of attracting tourists to South Florida when the temperatures sore and the retina scorching sun seems closer than Orlando.

There are a lot of conspiratorial theories out there, but none seriously answer that one simple question. The vast majority of Americans vacation in the summer. Admittedly Miami is not necessarily the family vacation capital of the world – or even of Florida for that matter – unless we’re talking about gossip column families with enough money to spend on $5 sodas for five year olds. But still, one would have to think that there are young, single working professionals who also take summer vacation and who aren’t really interested in visiting The Mouse. But those people don’t come here.

An argument could be made that there has long seemed to be very little interest even in addressing the challenge of summer tourism. Instead, every year, people who work in the industry grouse about the lack of summer business. A few figures with long-term vision again state that there needs to be a plan. If there is any talk about it in the halls of power, it quickly turns territorial. This wing of government explains how, no, all businesspeople are wrong and that there is absolutely no seasonality to local tourism. Another wing offers a million dollar slide show presentation on all of the wonderful things it does to drum up summer business. The governmentistas congratulate each other and head off to a taxpayer funded luncheon on the other side of the bay. It’s dodge, deny, and obfuscate – all at a cost to the entire hospitality industry. “There are several Holy Grails in politics in South Florida,” one well-connected political insider told me recently when I’d asked about the summer tourism shell game. “You don’t question how the boys market South Florida tourism. You get your hand slapped fast.”

I know what this friend is talking about. Marketing South Florida falls under the purview of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau (GMCVB). I’ve run afoul of them many times and I know that they are one of the most self-serving, arrogant, and politically influential groups South Florida has – and that’s saying something. Often I used to wonder why they were so influential and then it hit me: free stuff. Those in position to challenge them simply won’t be invited to the cool kids’ tables here or on taxpayer funded

Why don’t the GMCVB and its allies actually address the problem? To borrow some language – why not just plug the damn hole?

Is it such a challenge to develop singular summer events around which people can plan trips; or to create a summer-specific national marketing campaign to try to attract domestic visitors? The local establishment loathes Memorial Day, but it should at least demonstrate that it is possible to create an appealing summer attraction. Miami Beach’s Pride celebration is another example of at least an effort to liven things up.

Instead, we are supposed to expect that the summer will always be this way. Maybe that’s because the people who are supposed to care about such things are themselves vacationing somewhere cooler. But business operators don’t have that luxury. And once again this summer, many are fighting for their existences and face additional challenges from the economy and the Gulf oil spurt.

It’s hard to envision an upside to the ongoing environmental disaster, but as tourism continues to tank this summer, maybe the focus on developing summer business will have a longer lasting effect even than the massive oil slick.

Maybe in this summer of discontent, that’s something to hold on to. --Author and journalist Michael W. Sasser’s commentary

WIRED ON THE ARTS: JULY 8 – 21

BY JAMES CUBBY

JULY

8–21

Fourth of July may have passed, but Miami continues to celebrate nightly. Miami's nightclubs and arenas are filled with music, local theaters continue to offer an impressive line-up, and the Summer Festivals carry on. Some of the incredible offerings include Ringo Starr, Smashing Pumpkins, Kassav, Out in the Tropics (the GLBT performing arts festival), Babalu (a tribute to the music of Desi Arnaz), and Tap Dogs.

CONCERTS

CLOCKWISE: Tap Dogs, Sara Felder, Ringo Star, Teatro en Publico Miami hosts the IFÉ-ILÉ Afro-Cuban Dance Festival for three days at Florida International University. Once I finished licking the pork belly plate clean, it was time for our entrees.
