EDITOR IN CHIEF’S NOTE CELEBRATE YOUR DAD THIS FATHER’S DAY here was once a young boy growing up in Costa Rica who really looked up to his dad. He loved his dad very much and admired him greatly for his love of cars, music, friends, and family, his total dedication to running his family’s business, and for being madly in love with his mom. That young boy adored spending time with his dad when he sat for hours making mixed music tapes, when he barbecued the best meats for family and friends, sitting on his lap when he captained grandpa’s yacht, playing in the pool when they went to the beach cabin in Puntarenas on weekends, helping him wash the family cars, going downtown to get a Mariachi band for mom’s birthday, and so many other wonderful times they shared together. Unfortunately, after major surgery to cure his stomach ulcer, dad got very ill and required many operations. That young boy got to see his dad wither away to only a shadow of the strong man he once was as his illness caused him to lose so much weight that you could clearly see his bones through his skin. He also saw his dad lose the hearing that made it possible to produce such wonderful music through those mixed tapes his friends and wife loved to listen to so much - at the legendary parties his mom and dad hosted until dawn with breakfast included. To this day that young boy remembers that early morning when mom and grandma came home and he knew something was terribly wrong because they were supposed to be by dad’s bedside at the hospital. That was the terrible day that mom and grandma asked my brothers and I to come to my bedroom, and we sat on my bed to hear the awful news that my dad had finally lost his epic battle to stay alive. My dad was a fighter and he never, ever quit, but at the tender age of twelve I learned that life can be cut way too short, even when you never lose your will to live. I remember my dad, Rafael Alberto Carvajal Herrera, every day. Often, several times a day. The most unexpected things make me think of him sometimes – a true testament to how much I really miss him and will always miss him. I choose to celebrate my dad every Father’s Day and pay tribute to his wonderful life. My dad’s funeral was held in one of the largest churches in San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica. So many people attended the service that many friends had to stand on the sides lining the church walls, and even more stood outside waiting to honor my dad because there was no room left inside. Years later I realized that day was both the saddest and proudest day of my life. I can only hope that some day so many people will come to my funeral because I made such a difference in their lives. Love you dad. Your memory lives on through all the friends you touched, your beloved wife, and your very proud boys. We will never forget you. Happy Father’s Day! hile the infamous De Wallen red-light district makes Amsterdam, a city whose flag has “XXX” emblazoned across it, a year-round destination (oh, admit it: you’re curious), come this August, the rest of the rainbow gets its time in the limelight. Gay Pride Amsterdam is the one place where “going Dutch” means something entirely different than what you might think. There is no way around it: This party is gigantic. While the “official” Gay Pride Amsterdam is a three-day window, August 3-5, parties begin to erupt all over the city starting July 28, and even earlier in the outlying cities. A whopping 33 events are set to launch the city of Van Gogh and Armin van Buuren into the stratosphere, and some of them, official or not, are just too good to miss. Drag Queen Olympics? That’s on August 2. Nude clubbing? Check out Club Fuxxx (yes, that really is its name) on August 5. Also on the 5th is something called “Dirty Dicks” at a place called—Sweet baby Jesus—the Fist Factory. This may be the one party in the world that requires you to first attend a Lamaze class. The centerpiece of Gay Pride Amsterdam is the Canal Parade spectacular on August 4, and it literally is IN a canal. The funny thing about Amsterdam: The city is either at or under sea level. Canals, all part of an ancient water-management system, criss-cross the city and the natives love ‘em, so unlike those of the famous terra firma pride routes of New York and London, in Amsterdam the pride floats really do float. Starting at the Westerdok Harbor, the Canal Parade starts at 2 p.m., runs along the Prinsengracht canal/street then turns left on to the Amstel River (now you know where the beer got its name), passing the famous Magere Brug bridge and the StadshuisMuziektheater to make a right in the direction of the Oosterdok waterfront. This is one of the biggest hotel-jamming events on the Dutch social calendar; if you want to go, officials urge booking ASAP. And, FYI, it’s not just in Amsterdam that you can find a good Pride party. While the Dutch capital hosts the biggest event, the Roze Zaterdag (July 7) in the city of Haarlem and the Roze Mandaag festival (July 23) in Tillburg prove that this country is gay-friendly (and loves a good party) pretty much wherever you go, on land or off. THE BOYS SPLASH

plish, splash there’s boys in Mickey’s bath. Summer is officially in full swing, and what better way to get the party started than dancing the night away in the happiest place on earth, Disney World! Gay Days 2012 was a blast! I had the pleasure of staying at the Wonderland host hotel Lake Buena Vista Palace. The festivities all began with a “Pool Party” that Mother Nature forced into one of the hotel’s ballrooms, located right near the front desk, so as guests checked in, they were greeted by pulsing beats, dancing drag queens, and occasional sing-a-longs to “Call Me Maybe.” Soon after, my friends all arrived and we headed out to Typhoon Lagoon for their One Magical Night dance party.

One of my favorite parts of Gay Days is meeting people from all over the world. I met people from Germany, Argentina, Australia, and the UK, everyone gathers around the pool for an all-day party in the Florida sunshine. We spent a couple hours at the pool party, before making our way to the Magic Kingdom, where a sea of people in red shirts (part of Gay Days tradition is to go to the Magic Kingdom dressed in red to let the world know you are gay) flooded Mickey’s world. Those Brazilian tour groups didn’t know what hit ‘em. A few hours and a short nap later, we were off to the world famous Parliament House to check out Chaka Khan live! The club set up a huge foam pit, three dance floors, and a plethora of vendor booths to buy all kinds of gay-themed trinkets such as underwear, riding crops, and of course 3D porn. There’s no other place in the world where you can hear Chaka Kahn belting “I Feel For You” while you and your friends are dancing in a foam pit wearing your newly purchased leather harness. It was a surreal and almost overwhelming experience.

Imagine it, a huge water park blasting dance music, filled to the brim with crazy inebriated gay men swooshing down waterslides, and dancing through the lazy river until two in the morning! But have no fear readers, the adventures did not end at two, it was just time for the next party. The host hotel put up “The Tunnel Party” from midnight until 7 a.m. for all those late night partygoers, such as myself. There’s nothing like leaving a giant circuit party in time to watch Sunday was the day I had to call it quits because I was officially partied out. I the sun come up. spent my remaining hours on property There was just enough time for a couple laying out by the pool and enjoying the hours of sleep, before waking up to the company of my friends reflecting on “whomp whomp whomp” sound of bass the wild hot weekend I’d just (barely) bursting thru my balcony door, letting lived through. Gays Days definitely has me know it’s time for my friends and I something for everyone. If you haven’t to get up, throw on our tiniest bathing experienced it first hand, try to put it on suits, and head down to the pool party your calendar for next year, and don’t for a day of sun, more dancing, and forget to pack your red shirt. Next event making lots of new friends. Good thing for me will be NYC pride! Can’t wait to I came prepared with my favorite chap see what shenanigans I will find myself stick BEEcause to keep my lips hydrated. in this time. 7 | wire magazine | issue #24, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter

LOOKING GOOD EATING WELL & STAYING HEALTHY THIS SUMMER BY KEN HUNT

ummer is the time to shed layers of clothes—as well as some pounds. You want to look your best this summer. By making some minor changes in your diet you will see a big difference in your waistline. Here are some tips: Start your summer “diet” with tomatoes and peppers for vitamin A, vitamin C and Lycopene. Tomatoes and bell peppers of all colors deliver large amounts of vitamins A and C. Lycopene may prevent, as well as treat, several types of cancer. Try cutting up a variety of these veggies and spread a little low-calorie dressing on them. Add a little garlic salt or any of the Mrs. Dash seasonings. The benefits of beans or legumes are as wide as the varieties available. Choices like peas, lentils, black beans, butter beans, lima beans and garbanzo beans (also called chickpeas) are all nutrient-rich and great sources of fiber, iron and protein. These small, tasty treasures can help you feel full longer, while curbing your appetite for foods that are high in fat. Create a salad with your favorite greens and beans. Toss them with a little olive oil, or drizzle some low fat yogurt on them. For a bit of variety try grilling them. Get yourself a large beef stake tomato, cut it in slices, lightly grill it, and then use it as a plate for your veggies. Skip the bacon bits and go easy on the cheese. Throw your favorite fruits in the blender along with some low fat milk or juice. You’ll have a great smoothie. Add some peanut butter for extra energy. If it’s still not sweet enough, add Splenda or any of your favorite sweeteners. Try honey! Looking for a “cool” way to preserve them? Pop strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries or slices of fruit into the freezer and eat them frozen for a refreshing snack. Try them on your favorite frozen dairy treat. Do you like yogurt? Well here’s good news, yogurt can even help you slim down, according to recent studies showing a lowcalorie diet that includes three servings of dairy per day can help promote weight loss. Please stop drinking soda. I don’t care if it’s Diet, Zero, Low Cal or otherwise. Eliminating soda can have a huge impact on your caloric intake. One serving of soda contains approximately 100 calories. Think of soda as liquid candy. Not to mention that the gas in a can of soda will cause your stomach to expand; you will feel uncomfortably bloated. Try and replace soda and other sugared drinks (sweet tea, coffee, fruit juices) with water or any sparkling beverage. Try to add more water into your daily consumption. Though water isn’t technically a food, and it may not have any nutritional values, it’s a good tool to use to lose weight or even just maintain. And water is key in helping those trying to lose weight because it curbs hunger pangs. Try my favorite, which is flavored seltzer or sparkling water. For a really refreshing twist, cut up lemons and limes and put them in a pitcher of water. The fruits give the water a nice light, refreshing flavor. Want something out of the ordinary? Try a pitcher of water with sliced cucumbers and you will have a great way to quench your thirst after a tough workout or a nice run on the beach. So this summer, eat healthy, eat right and feel great. Ken Hunt is an AFI-certified trainer and fitness expert who owns New York and Miami’s Steel Gym. ATHENA DION, MILANCITA, GINA DIANGELO, VEGAS DION, & T.P. LORDS

chat with the lovely Vegas Dion about Discotekka, nightlife, and the Miami scene. How long have you been part of the Miami nightlife scene? I have been part of the Miami nightlife scene for the past 13 years. What’s the biggest misconception about Raul and about Vegas Dion? That I’m a conceited bitch! I am truly a very nice, honest and genuine person, but a serious one. I am constantly thinking and analyzing everything around me so it might be the reason why I’m not one to always have a smile on my face. I’m also a very confident individual and some people often tend to mistake confidence with cockiness, which is not a trait in my case. Have you been working with Discotekka since the very beginning? Since the walls were dust and there was only one door to come in and out. We waited with anticipation for the final touches before grand opening day and I was fortunate enough to be the one welcoming our patrons that very first day. Who are the key players at Discotekka? We are a big team! Everyone plays an essential role in the success of our business, we couldn’t do half the things we do without the help of everyone, but there are a few leaders that have their work cut out for them. Danny Villar – is the master of creativity poured into the venue and the parties. Danny has a keen eye for detail, which drives every project to almost perfection. This aspect of his does not only apply to décor and creation, it also applies to the procedures and operations of Discotekka. We owe most of our smooth operational service to the perfected craft of this man. Alyson Thomas aka MaMaBear – Besides being one of the most respected personalities in our gay community, especially in the drag world, Alyson has the job of five people at Discotekka. She is the person behind the mounds of paperwork and business formalities in our company, she is the computer that processes everything, and when I say everything I really mean ALL! Couldn’t do it without MamaBear. Five years ago Discotekka created a vivid and bright new party alternative to the gay community and have been pioneers in their theme parties and events in their beautiful immense club. Discotekka, known as a venue for showcasing house music, is always on the cutting edge of the ever-evolving music scene. For its fifth anniversary, Discotekka will produce a “CIRCUS” theme party featuring NYC’s newest house music breakout star of the year, DJ/Producer Billy Lace. Discotekka promises their greatest show yet with Milancita, one of South Florida’s favorite promoters, and Danny Villar. Milancita – the reason for my drive and our success. I have the utmost respect for this lady - A pioneer in our community in the way events were created and promoted. To me, she is the glue that makes many pieces stick together at Discotekka. I am not complete if I am not working alongside Milancita. Wendy & Joe – Our owners! It all started with an idea that blossomed into something great. I am forever in debt to these two great people because they blindly trusted a group of people that had a vision, and with their leadership, success was obtained. The

VEGAS DION & MILANCITA

What ingredients are important to make a popular and successful nightclub? Definitely a good work team. People like to go where there is a good vibe. It’s not the place that makes the party…it’s the crowd. But of course, we go out to drink and dance, so good music is a key factor, therefore the selection of good DJs is important. Some people say Miami’s nightclub scene isn’t what it used to be. What’s your reaction to that? It definitely is not what it used to be. “The party used to be the party” as my friend Wanda of SoBe would say. But, nothing really is what it used to be. Imagine if we would hold on to the way things were, we would be doomed for catastrophe. Everything evolves in positive and negative aspects. Back in the day the night scene was different, there was a natural magic to everything back then, it was all like taken out of a movie. Shows were magical, lavish venues and some entertainers received celebrity-like treatment. Sure, they were great times but it had its negative side as well, and we still face those issues today. There is more awareness now about certain things that we did not have back then…so all in all, times change and change is good. Each “time” has its own identity, beauty and glory. How has the Miami nightlife scene changed since you’ve been a part of it? A lot. There are many more options as where to go out. Tons of things are now very popular and not as exclusive as it was back then. Now this industry has changed into a more mainstream concept to cater to a larger audience and certain luxuries and details are overlooked. Technological advances have a huge part on the evolution of nightlife. We merely relied on word of mouth, phone calls, or letter mail…that all seems so archaic now.

RDS T.P. LO

My dear friend Electra, drag icon of our community, would complain when I would text her “Why can’t you just pick up the phone and call?” Now the only time I hear from her is thru text. What can we expect for your 5th Anniversary celebration? A lot of fun with a lot of champagne. It’s what a celebration is about! Dance till you drop to the beats of DJ/Producer Billy Lace and a spectacular circus themed production by the incredible TP Lords. Are there any big surprises for this year’s celebration? This 5-year mark is a big accomplishment for us at Discotekka. Every year we throw big parties to cater to our crowd, but this year we want to take a seat and also enjoy a lot of the fun involved. There are a lot of giveaways and promotions going on, but we are making it all about the fun. We want to have fun and have everyone else enjoy the event as well. 9 | wire magazine | issue #24, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter

ATHENA DION GINA DIANGELO

What are some of your fondest memories at Discotekka? There are so many. The first year was very eventful, therefore unforgettable. Danny Villar and myself climbing ladders to put up decorations, or scrubbing the bars after an unexpected water leakage, etc. My birthday celebrations have always been memorable. It is almost impossible for me to sum them up, it has been a part of my life for five years, and I have great memories. As the Manager, do you feel that you’re always working or can you enjoy yourself on a Saturday night? I’m ALWAYS working! Even when having a shot with a patron or sharing a dance with my partner, I’m always working. It becomes a natural thing already; always aware of the surroundings and making sure everything is under control…it’s what everyone knows as “WORK MODE.” Alyson and Danny live on work mode 22 hours of the day. Why do you think Discotekka is so successful? Definitely the work team. Not one factor can make anything successful; there are many ingredients that are essential to make it a good, successful night. A cake is not only made out of flour, you need a lot more for it to be a GOOD CAKE ! Is there anything else you’d like to share with Wire Magazine readers? Any scoop on some of your upcoming theme nights that people love so much? Yes! Yes! Yes! On July 7, DJ Escape returns to Discotekka, and this time to celebrate Independence Day as Captain America. We have a SUPERHERO theme and we encourage everyone to dress up as your favorite superhero. There will be a superhero contest and the winner will receive a cash prize. Also, at the end of the month of July, WATERWORKS 6.0 hits Discotekka again. More water, more fun in the foam, stay tuned with Wire Magazine for details on these upcoming events. It’s been great sharing with you and I expect to see you this Saturday at Discotekka for our 5th year Anniversary celebration. Thank you!!

COVER STORY: DISCOTEKKA CELEBRATES 5 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

MILANCITA MORE THAN A PROMOTER

BY JAMES CUBBY

infamous O’Zone. You’ve probably seen it all. How has the scene changed since you first started? The only thing that has changed has been the economy. People will always have the spirit and desire to party, dance and drink when they are happy, when they are sad, when they are celebrating, when they are bored, when they are doing anything… and where better than Discotekka?

Wire Magazine also spoke with another member of the Discotekka team, Milancita, a major force in Miami’s nightlife scene, who spoke with us about Discotekka, the scene, her promotional company and Discotekka’s anniversary celebration. What’s your role at Discotekka? My role at Discotekka is very complex, since day one I have been the only promoter for our Iconic Gay Saturday Night, which is still going strong after five wonderful years. However, since we are not a small club but rather an empire, I dabble within all the departments and form part of the managerial decision making process. How long have you been part of the Miami nightlife scene? Ah God, I hate to reveal my years but I can say that it’s been over a decade since I arrived in this city and decided to seize it by all costs. I am an ambitious individual and there is still more Milancita and Milancita. com events to come! Who is Milancita and who is your greatest inspiration? Milancita is an animal and a workaholic who responds to the simplest text messages and remembers you all by your first and last name. I am a fighter, and a believer in doing things the right way. I came to this country with a dream to leave my mark behind and not only reinvent the nightlife but to take our gay community soaring to unimaginable heights. My greatest inspiration has got to be my parents. Thanks to the teachings passed down to me about ways to live life, respect everything and everyone and above all, justice, I have become the person I am today. You’ve promoted for Discotekka, Score, Boardwalk, Living Room, Azucar and the

What is or was your favorite Miami nightclub and why? My favorite club in Miami has got to be Discotekka, not because that is my job but because between the famous Vegas Dion, Danny Villar, Alyson Thomas, Wendy Tascionne, Joe Marcella, Mike Slyder and myself, we created and expanded a very small space into an empire of iconic events and world famous DJs in the heart of Downtown Miami! Describe a Saturday night at Discotekka. Discotekka is unlike anything else right now. We offer our customers a different vibe every time they come back. We invest in time changing decorations, the layout of the club, the music, and the theme of the party changes from week to week. We give the crowd something to look forward to every Saturday. Join Vegas Dion and I every Saturday and feel the hype for yourself. What can we expect for your 5th Anniversary celebration? A circus, magic, lights, dreams, and amazing shows. This party will be like noooothing we have ever done before… Are you ready? Is there anything else you’d like to share with Wire Magazine readers? Thank you all for your support and for believing in me and my events. For myself and Discotekka, you all are not just a number but also the people we love, and like family, have seen grow throughout the years. I want you to know that I will always be there when I’m needed because you all are the building blocks of the person I have become, and the Image I represent in this community. You are part of my life and count with me to stand by your rights today, tomorrow and in the future!

ITALO BRAZILIAN BARTENDER BY JAMES CUBBY Wire Magazine also interviewed Discotekka’s longtime bartender Italo and we chatted about Discotekka, bartending, and good times. As a long-time bartender at Discotekka, you’ve probably seen and heard it all. What’s the most outrageous thing that you’ve seen at Discotekka? Oh yes, I’ve seen many things! The most crazy night I can remember was the Aqua party, it was so much fun. What are some of the comments from customers about Discotekka? Generally people say that it is one of the best gay places in Miami where they can enjoy great music and people feel very comfortable here. Is there a typical crowd that comes to Discotekka or does the crowd change depending on the event? The crowd changes a lot depending on the time or the event. It has a mixed crowd overall. How do you describe Discotekka on a Saturday night? It’s a place where you can meet people in different areas or rooms, it has an open place, different types of music, it’s a lot of fun, if you either want to go crazy dancing or just have some drinks and gossip. What changes have you seen at Discotekka since you’ve been there? It was just one room in the beginning and now it has five rooms! The administration has done a great job and Discotekka is known worldwide. It’s very organized and it’s been expanding in the right direction. Why do you think Discotekka is so successful? The working team is focused on making Discotekka the best place in Miami. What is your favorite thing about bartending at Discotekka? I love that I feel at home when I’m bartending in Discotekka, I feel I’m part of it and that is very comforting. Is there anything else that you’d like to say to Wire Magazine readers? Cast: Tom Cruise Julianne Hough Diego Boneta Russell Brand Catherine Zeta-Jones Mary J. Blige Alec Baldwin f you like musical films, you should see this movie. If you like ‘80’s music, you need to see this film. If you like seeing Tom Cruise being outrageous, you need to see this film. If you want a feel good time at the movies, then this film is for you. Not that it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread, it’s not, it’s rather trite actually, but it is joyous fun. Even the performers are having a blast doing it, and their enjoyment is just…infectious. Based on the Broadway smash by the same name, Rock of Ages tells the story of small town girl Sherrie and LA city boy Drew, who meet at the Bourbon Room (The Whiskey) on the Sunset Strip in the ‘80s, while pursuing their Hollywood dreams. It’s a rock ‘n’ roll romance woven through the heart-stomping hits of Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Whitesnake and others. Cruise plays Stacee Jaxx, the god of rock, wearing black nail polish, earring, funky jock-strap, and bare tattooed chest. He sings and prances, uses his tongue, spreads his legs, and his women’s legs, and gives us a performance you’re not likely to ever forget. He’s the epitome of a debauched rock star completely devoid of any reality. Even Poison frontman Bret Michaels liked his persona. “Tom nailed it,” Michaels said of the actor’s performance. “What I think Tom did was combine a combination of myself and Axl Rose — sort of my look and stage persona and energy, and he takes Axl Rose’s intense attitude and mixes them together. It was great.” Under the amped-up direction of Adam Shankman (Hairspray), the film becomes a high-energy romp through a nostalgic period of time in rock and LA history that everyone can have fun with. Just leave your belief system at the door and go sing along with the cast. Everyone gives a great performance and they all sing pretty darn good actually, even Paul Giamatti and & Alec Baldwin. The exception is probably Catherine Zeta-Jones, who seems to me to be really pushing her role too hard and with lots less verve than her role in Chicago. I can sum up the film this way, someone I was sitting next to in the theater after the film smiled at me and said “it’s like listening to all your favorite classic hits in one big session on a rainy afternoon, a guilty pleasure you never tell anyone about.” Rock Of Ages Rating: 4 Stars (out of 5) PG-13 • 2 Hours 3 Minutes 14 | wire magazine | issue #24, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter

ow this is weird. Peace, Love and Misunderstanding could be taken as a tribute to the light-it-up, let-it-all-hang-out vibe of the 1960s. In the film, uptight attorney Diane (Catherine Keener) flees New York City and her disintegrating marriage, packing her kids in the beemer and seeking refuge upstate in Woodstock. There her super-trippy, über-hippy mother Grace (Jane Fonda) is doing her Earth Mother thing. Although Grace hasn’t seen Diane in twenty years, and has never laid eyes on her two grandchildren, she welcomes them into her funky household and as everybody, including Diane’s daughter Zoe (Elizabeth Olsen) and son Jake (Nat Wolff) find romance among the locals, the unhappy Manhattanites are liberated by loosening up and embracing the moment – and themselves. But PL&M has a strangely uptight, sitcom-square sensibility. It titters at – a woman painting a nude model who’s – a man! At a naked man (who’s not actually naked) at the breakfast table! At the very idea of gay men! Hee hee hee, this movie is outrageous! Maybe back when Sanford & Son topped the ratings, but in 2012? Or maybe PL&M is out to hate on the 1960s by means of crude caricature, and make the zings really sting by casting Jane Fonda, an icon of the era, in a leading role. Are the filmmakers just rubbing it in when Diane pores over old photos of Grace, that is, photos of Jane Fonda in the sixties? Fonda looks great in those pictures, by the way. No, it’s a mistake to imagine that PL&M has any attitude toward the sixties or much of anything else. Breathtakingly bland and by-the-numbers, PL&M hasn’t got the time, the space or the brains for an attitude. It’s possible to animate clichés, to breathe at least a little life into banal situations and characterless characters. But that takes sharp dialogue, distinct characterization, some sense of texture – none of which Peace Love and Misunderstanding has. It is, as they said in the sixties, “a very bad trip.”

GLITTER BOX CELEBRATES TWO SPARKLING YEARS

JUNE 14 – 20 CONCERTS

Festival presents Calígula, by Teatro El Público, at the Colony Theater June 14 The Wall Live, a worldwide concert 16 at 8 p.m. tour by Roger Waters – formerly of Pink Floyd, comes to BankAtlantic Center on June 15 at 7 p.m. South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble performs The Music of Our Lives at the Broward Center on June 16 at 8 p.m.

hen Dustin Reffca first stepped into South Beach’s local hole-in-the-wall, Kill Your Idol, he was instantly transported to another world - a world with no limits, no rules and no judgments. From the life-size astronaut suspended overhead to the thrift store décor accenting every angle, he knew in a hot minute this would be the home of Glitter Box Mondays. It’s no big secret that pulling off a weekly gay party in South Beach can be tricky. But if you’re as creative as the high-haired promoter, your soiree will not only attract the most colorful crowd in South Beach, it’ll be dubbed “the ONLY Monday night party.” On June 25, Glitter Box will celebrate its second anniversary with multiple DJs, sparkling guest appearances and the kind of bling you’ll only find when you step inside “The Box.” On your opening night of Glitter Box, did you ever think it would still be going on two years later? I certainly hoped so. When I started to put the concept of this night together I knew that it was going to be unique to what was currently going on with the nightlife scene in Miami. Glitter Box has a completely different vibe. It’s not pretentious. It’s old-school South Beach fun. What do you think it is that’s made Glitter Box so successful? First the music: DJ Smeejay has been instrumental in setting the mood with great music. He really knows how to change things up all night long and he surprises me with some of the songs he comes out with. Second: the venue. Kill Your Idol is very different from anywhere in South Beach. From the crazy artwork to the fun and friendly staff, it really welcomes everyone. That’s why we have such a strong local following on Mondays. I really try to keep it fresh and change things up, but am subtle about it so to not affect the entire concept. This year we started showcasing additional DJs, from well-knowns like FR8-O and Maximus 3000 to new and upcoming. What have you got planned for the big anniversary on June 25? We’ll have our resident DJ Smeejay along with our monthly guest DJs FR8-O and Maximus, live recording artists, a Glitter Box Mondays at Kill Your Idol CD giveaway and more. As always we’ll have our $1 PBR beer, $2 Jell-O shots, $4 Jack Daniels and $4 Vodka drinks all night. How do you plan to make year three of Glitter Box better then ever? I plan to stay true to the Glitter Box concept, but have plans to filter in some great new talent. I want to keep it interesting for my regulars and really showcase what South Beach has to offer to all the tourists.

Glitter Box Mondays

Would you say it takes two to make a thing go right? Yes! But unlike the song, it definitely takes more to make it out of sight.

DINING

BY RAFA CARVAJAL

TAKE CARE OF DAD IN STYLE hat better way to show your appreciation for dad around Father’s Day than to invite him out for a nice lunch or dinner? If you ask Google for “best Miami restaurants” you get a number of different answers, lists and recommendations, some of which I definitely do not agree with. For me, excellent dining does not have to equate with spending a fortune to enjoy a wonderful lunch or dinner with your dad for Father’s Day. There are several delicious restaurants that I have written about recently that I would definitely suggest for a very memorable and enjoyable Father’s Day dining celebration. Their price points vary. I would also recommend a bit of planning ahead and suggesting to your dad that you go out to lunch or dinner whenever you both feel it would be best to celebrate. You may actually decide that Sunday, June 17, the “official” Father’s Day may not be the best day because you may prefer to dine out with dad on a day when the restaurants are not super busy. DAILY GRIND: MENTAL HEALTH

BY DR. GREGG A. PIZZI

CONFLICTED ABOUT COMING OUT? (PART 1) lthough you may have known that you are gay, lesbian or bisexual for most of your life, it may come as a surprise to your friends, family or coworkers. Almost every, LGBT person faces the challenge of coming out to friends and family members at some point in his or her life. For some, it is relatively painless. For others, it is extremely difficult. The degree of challenge depends on many factors. When the news is a complete surprise, it usually takes some time for the family members to process it, and the experience is often very much like a loss. The people receiving the news are losing the image or view they once had of the person coming out and must replace it with a different image or view. For some people, this is an extremely emotional experience. As with any major loss, many people experience reactions like these: Shock. The first reaction may be numbness or denial. The person may ask, “Are you sure?” or say, “It can’t be true!” He or she may feel nothing for several days, claiming to have no reaction at all. Wire_HP_horiz_She_HP_horiz 5/19/12 12:37 PM Page 1

Anger. After the shock wears off, people usually become angry. They may say or

think, “Why me? Why does this have to happen to me?” or “What did I do to deserve this?” or “After all I’ve done for her!” Bargaining. The person may start to think that he or she can do something to change the fact of your gayness. He or she may say, “Why don’t you take a nice vacation with the family? I’m sure you’ll feel differently about this after a good rest,” or pray to God, “Please just make this go away and I’ll never say a bad word to him again.” Depression. Sadness and lethargy may follow next. The person may feel guilty and sad for a long time, wishing that things could be different. Acceptance. After a time, most people come to accept the news. They may cycle through the stages a few times, but eventually the facts sink in. The person is then ready to accept the situation and move on. For my next column in two weeks, I’ll be discussing steps you can take to make the coming-out process easier for yourself and your loved ones. Stay tuned! Dr. Gregg A.
