A Broadway musical that glorifies cross-dressing? La Cage aux Folles is that and more. La Cage aux Folles, the Broadway musical with a book by Harvey Fierstein (who also played one of the leads on Broadway) and lyrics and music by Jerry Herman, comes to the Broward Center with its glorious show about life and loving. Taking a line from the show, “You’ll love us once you get to know us.” And audiences continue loving La Cage aux Folles. The original 1983 Broadway production won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. The 2010 Broadway revival was nominated for eleven Tony Awards and won the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical. While the Broadway productions had a revolving showcase of stars, beginning with Kelsey Grammer, stepping into the lead roles, this production also has star power with the legendary George Hamilton playing Georges and Christopher Sieber (who played Georges on Broadway opposite Harvey Fierstein) as Albin.
