EDITOR IN CHIEF’S NOTE HOME SWEET HOME write this week’s note just before heading to the airport for my return trip to Miami later tonight. I’ve had a wonderful time back home in Costa Rica. It’s too bad all great things have to come to an end – I really wish I could stay here longer… I have spent seven wonderful days in Costa Rica visiting my family and attending the Festival Imperial music festival. It has been both a rocking good time and a chance to spend quality time with my mom, brothers, nieces, and nephew. I also had the opportunity to be part of music history by attending the Maroon 5, LMFAO, and Björk concerts during this year’s music festival. These three concerts were my musical highlights out of two full days of concerts and DJ performances by top musicians and performers from around the world. Besides my two extraordinary days at Festival Imperial, I traveled a bit around Costa Rica to do some sightseeing and show Jesse Spencer some parts of my country during his first visit here. Some of the places I took Jesse were the Irazú volcano, the old capital of Cartago, and picturesque Cachí. I will definitely share some of my experiences with you in the next two or three issues of Wire Magazine through my On the Go Travel, Dining, and other editorials about my travels in Costa Rica and my attendance to this year’s Festival Imperial music festival. This week’s issue is our second hot models calendar for 2012. We bring you three very steamy months for your viewing pleasure courtesy of two very talented photographers and three beautiful models. Miami’s Abel Cruz will delight you with Yadier and Darian Alvarez in April and June, while Paolo Crocenzi from San Marino, Italy, will certainly please your eyes with Badara Ndiaye in May. Enjoy the start of spring! Last week’s issue of Wire Magazine with our cover story interview of Gloria Estefan in glossy was a big hit amongst our readers. POLITICS, RACE AND THE TRAGEDY OF TRAYVON MARTIN

JUST CALL ME DR. NO BY MICHAEL SASSER t seems every journalist in the country is busy jumping on the bandwagon to contribute to the narrative of the tragic, horrifying tale of the death of Trayvon Martin. By now, you know the narrative. An angelic young African-American teenager minding his own business is gunned down in cold blood by a racist, hate-crime committing bigot. Sure, no one knows all the facts. Details are being leaked or discovered every day. But since we’re talking about the perception of writers, facts and truths don’t matter. Only the narrative matters. It’s all the public will remember in the end anyway. Besides modern media doesn’t have any interest in facts. I do not want to discuss the actual atrocity. For the record, I have yet to hear anything to convince me that a confrontation was called for, much less one that involved a gun. Nothing about young Martin so far paints a portrait of a hard-core criminal. On the other hand, there is ample but circumstantial evidence that the gunman is somewhat less than stable. But I might be the only one in the country not using this tragedy to advance my own agenda, and what is happening is a sad commentary on the politics of race in Florida and the US. On one hand, you have the law and order, generally conservative crowd who has been quick to jump on the rights of the shooter. Thankfully most, at least, recognize this as a tragedy and haven’t – to my knowledge – tried to insinuate that the victim deserved his premature horrible ending. And then there is the other side. I am pleased to point out that it was almost 72 hours before left-wing activists started blaming the Republican Party for Martin’s death. One blamed former Florida Governor Jeb Bush specifically. I am a little surprised that Debbie Wasserman Schultz hasn’t come out and blamed the tragedy on Mitt Romney, although it could still happen. Of course, there are also the “professional ethnics,” those who garner personal wealth and power purporting to represent minority communities, but who really only representing their financial interests and partisan power – the Jesse Jacksons and Charles Rangels. Despite both having the ethical and moral credibility of a former night watchman at Treblinka, they have been all over the case, hamming it up for cameras and entrenching their own corrupt fiefdoms. Sadly, none of the politicians and professional ethnics in the country have any interest in an honest dialogue about the underlying issues of race relations. Not when there is a way to make a quick buck, get airtime on TV or earn some street creed for their profound sensitivity. Hogwash. To people of low moral character, no tragedy is too great to exploit for personal gain. But it’s more than that. Thanks to the intrusion of politics, the odds are that the public will never really know what happened on the horrible night this young man died. Politics will overshadow facts, no matter the outcome. And yes, it will be exploited by the political class. Trayvon Martin’s death is a shame on Florida. ven the best fitness plans can fail due to simple mistakes. So let me present my big NOs. NOs that keep people from reaching their fitness goals. First, let’s start with eating right and some of the really big NOs when it comes to nutrition. Without proper nutrition and attention to some basic lifestyle choices, you won’t be able to achieve your fitness goals. Personal pan pizzas. (What a marketing ploy this is). Take a look at the calorie count on these. Most of them run between 1800 to 2500 calories. For most people, this is an entire day’s allotment of calories. Toss this food choice in the opposite direction. Three square meals. NO! Eat six small meals. Make each one nutritious, but don’t fill up. And don’t forget to eat breakfast. It’s true. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It fuels your body for what’s ahead and jump starts your metabolism. Drinking colas. Liquor, obviously, is just empty calories. And sodas are not OK either. Say NO! Try sparkling water instead. Staying up late. Sleep deprivation causes all kinds of problems. If you want to look and feel lousy, stay up late. If you want to decrease your level of performance at work (or in school), stay up late. But if you want your mind and body to be working properly, get your sleep. And now, while you are at the gym.

Lifting too much weight. Lifting more than you can handle can cause you to sacrifice your form. This makes you vulnerable to injuries and also reduces the effectiveness of the exercise. Don’t be insecure if your gym buddies can carry more than you can. Just stick to your program and make sure you possess the right form in lifting weights. In time, as you get closer to your goal, you will realize that you can carry heavier weight. Don’t forget your cardio exercise. While cardio is difficult and not as appealing as other exercises, it is critically important to the success of any workout program. Squeeze in cardio time in your exercise routine and don’t cheat. If you absolutely hate the treadmill or the stepper, try spinning or low impact aerobics, even dance. I personally hate the treadmill, so I have taken up ballet. It has been a great way for me to get my cardio in, plus it’s given me a totally different awareness of my body. If you don’t believe me then try a few hours of ballet every week. It is some cardio workout! If these suggestions still don’t work for you then try to play a more out of the ordinary sport like badminton, or get to a pool and try swimming to make your cardio enjoyable. FROM FRESH FRUIT TO CASADO spent this past week in Costa Rica visiting family, sightseeing, and going to the Festival Imperial music festival. One of the true highlights of my trip was enjoying my mom’s home cooking – it made me realize how much I miss traditional Costa Rican food. My mom’s home cooking is very representative of some of Costa Rica’s traditional dishes. For breakfast we had plenty of mouth-watering, sweet tasting fruit. There is nothing like starting your breakfast with a bowl of fresh mango, papaya, and melon that were recently picked and delivered to the market. I strongly recommend that you try the fruit when you visit Costa Rica. You will certainly taste the difference because the local fruit did not have to be picked early and shipped by boat to the U.S. Another staple that I really enjoyed was the home-made tortillas. I ate tortillas with “queso Turrialba” – a delicious, freshly made cheese from the mountains of Turrialba, which is known for its cool climate, dairy farms, and that unique fresh, white cheese that is prepared in many ways in Costa Rica. Another great favorite for me was my mom’s “tortillas de queso” – she puts cheese into the masa when preparing the tortillas, so the cheese becomes part of the tortilla and gives it a very luscious taste. I like to eat mine with fresh “natilla,” which is somewhat similar to sour cream, but I think a little sweeter. As you travel through Costa Rica you will find a plethora of local restaurants where you can taste all our “comida típica,” traditional Costa Rican food. These restaurants will vary from really nice, higher end restaurants that cater mostly to foreign tourists, to my favorite, the local, rustic restaurants operated mostly by Costa Rican families trying to make an honest living providing “comida típica” menus to locals and tourists alike. We stopped at such a restaurant to eat some “gallos” (sort of local tapas) on the drive down from Irazú volcano. I had a very tasty “gallo de chicharrón” and a warm “agua dulce con leche” for my drink at a place that has been feeding volcano visitors for 40 years and certainly looked its age. The most memorable restaurant I visited was Tiquicia Mirador, Bar, Restaurante in Escazú, San José. Tiquicia specializes in “comida típica,” but the real reason to dine there is the stunning view of the city of San José, from the restaurant’s location perched up high in the mountains of Escazú. The view at night is marvelous! The other cool thing about Tiquicia is that they have shows by a very talented group of traditional Costa Rican folklore dancers. I had a “casado” (Spanish for married man) for dinner. This is a traditional meal consisting of rice, black beans, plantains, salad, a tortilla, and an optional meat choice of chicken, beef, pork or fish. The name originated when restaurant customers asked to be treated as casados – married men whose wives served them such meals at home.

his year’s Winter Music Conference was the biggest ever! Besides record-breaking attendances and the first ever televised Ultra Music Festival, recording artists from around the world packed the clubs to give us a sneak peak at their latest tracks. In all the madness, I was able to catch a few performances and chat with some of my faves.

he Coral Gables Art Cinema’s presentation of Chico & Rita has become more than the healthy run of a compelling movie. It’s a cultural event, a Rocky Horror for audiences dominated by elderly Cuban-Americans who sing along with the movie’s beloved songs and talk back to the movie’s animated characters. A nostalgic nimbus the color of a tropical sunset, warmed by thousands of heartfelt memories, has settled over Aragon Avenue. This is no surprise. Chico & Rita is a seductive package, a story of Cuba before Castro, New York before Warhol and jazz before Kenny G, rendered in a palette as vivid as a macaw’s feathers, accompanied by a score as sweet as it is hot. Although it’s a Spanish-Manx co-production, Chico & Rita is made for Miami: It’s a long exuberant wallow in the sabor of the Good Old Days.

Who are the comedians that will be joining you onstage? There is Vickie Shaw, very popular on the Olivia Cruises, who has an hour special on LOGO called You Can Take The Girl Out Of Texas. There’s also Barb Neligan from Nashville, who also happens to play the banjo – she says being from Nashville it is the law. How do you select the comedians that work with you in the show? It changes, but it is purely inspiration depending on location and availability. What’s the most unusual response you have received on your tour? I once had a columnist in Fort Worth, Texas say he would do an article, but that he would do it from a Christian point of view. It was a nice article, but in the end he said we were all going to hell. Hey, any press is good press. Why only showcase gay women and not throw in a gay male comedian? I have had men in the show and will do that more. How do you describe your comic style? I would say I am very fast-paced – energetic – very Poppy. I have been called a comedic ball of lesbian thunder. Who do you think are the funniest comedians working today? That is a tough one – there are so many of us now – and I really don’t keep up. It is just enough for me to do what I do, produce and write. But I try to watch one or two once in a while on TV to see where the trend of comedy is going. I couldn’t tell you who the funniest are. It is all so subjective to the individuals taste and upbringing. What’s the funniest thing that you’ve ever said onstage? Well, again subjective but, I thought when a guy, drunk of course, heckled me one time in Kalamazoo he says, “hey baby, come here I’ll f@#k ya for nothing.” I responded, “Hey buddy, “I’ll sit on your face to cover it

The Queer Queens of Qomedy, a trio of female comedians led by Poppy Champlin, a lesbian comedian who hails from Chicago, will be making a stop at an Improv near you. These three comedians focus on the gay agenda and gay humor, however, no part of the human condition is off limits. The Queer Queens of Qomedy, hosted by the talented comedian and songstress, Poppy Champlin, is a fast paced edgy show with these three comedians bringing their unique styles of comedy to the stage for 30-minute sets. The Queer Queens of Qomedy has been touring the country and Poppy says she selects the best lesbian comics from across the country to join her at each stop. In its sixth year touring the country, QQQ continues to entertain audiences in venues from coffee shops to comedy clubs. Poppy feels that laughter is universal and that makes a broader market for these funny ladies. “This a gonna be a “shut the front door” funny comedy show!” says Poppy. Wire Magazine caught up with Poppy to chat about the tour, comics, and her sense of humor.

How important is a good audience to a comedian? Oh man – that is key – if the audience is there and ready for a good time – then let’s go and it is on, but if they are sitting there unhappy and talking and bitchy – forget about it – it is going to be a long night and a lot of work. Are your audiences mostly gay women or are they mixed? They are mixed and I hope to get the mix a little better – straight people are finding me now and they are coming. I just wish the gay men would get all in with me. I play Atlantis cruises and they love me. What’s the biggest misconception about lesbian comedians? I think the misconception is about lesbians – it is an old stereotype that we all wear flannel and will kick your ass and are totally politically correct. Well, that is so old it stinks. Should audiences be ready to be picked on and ridiculed for the entertainment of the rest of the audience? The thing is that sometimes I may speak to someone in the audience and if that person wants to engage then we will and I will find something funny. I have gone too far sometimes and gotten in trouble. Like I picked on this one gal and she came back with something like I’ve got cancer and only three months to live. Well, where do you go from there? “I have melanoma on my arm.” Is there anything else that you’d like to share with Wire Magazine readers? This show is going to be so much fun. We have a meetand-greet before the show so you can meet and talk with the comedians – and it is a powerhouse show. All three of us can headline a room, so you are getting three headliners for the price of one. If you can’t get to Dinah Shore or an Olivia cruise – let us bring you that caliber of entertainment.
