ON THE GO: TAILS IN TWO CITIES

MOVA, South Beach’s popular martini lounge, now has a new location in Washington D.C. After four years of enjoying the success of his very popular South Beach location, owner Babak Movahedi has opened a Washington D.C. location. “We are very excited to return to D.C.,” said Babak Movahedi, owner of MOVA Lounge. “Over the years, MOVA has evolved as a company, a brand and as a nightlife destination. This new space will provide the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgendered (LGBT) community in our nation’s capital with an opulent bar experience unlike any other.” The D.C. MOVA opened this past October but will have a grand opening celebration this weekend. Wire caught up with Babak to chat about MOVA, his work in the community and his ties to South Beach and D.C. What first brought you to Miami from Washington D.C.? I had been coming back and forth between Miami and D.C. for years, and I have always loved the Miami Beach lifestyle. MOVA in D.C. certainly filled a void in the nightlife experience, offering locals a place where they could enjoy a high quality cocktail in a very chic lounge with incredible service, and I just could not find that in Miami Beach. There really was a need in this market for a place like MOVA, and when I discovered our current location at 1625 Michigan Avenue, right off of Lincoln Road, I knew it was time for me to bring the MOVA concept down to South Beach. How is the gay scene different in D.C.? The gay scene in Miami is very different from D.C. in a couple of ways. D.C. is really a happy hour crowd. A lot of people work from nine to five and really enjoy cocktailing after work. In Miami it’s a bit of a later crowd. Miami is more of a leisurely town. D.C. and Miami are also different in that we get a lot of tourists that are looking to let loose and party all night, which really gave us the chance to explore so many different nights in Miami. We have a DJ at MOVA every night of the week in Miami. However, no matter how different Miami is from D.C. the community is exactly the same in wanting high quality cocktails, great service, and a beautiful atmosphere. How will the MOVA in D.C. be different than MOVA in Miami Beach?

Well we’ve never really left D.C. In fact, we were just looking for the right location to reopen. Like Miami, I noticed seven years ago that there was a void in the D.C. nightlife circuit. D.C. was missing that very chic lounge where everyone can go to enjoy a delicious cocktail, great music, and programming variety. D.C. and Miami will be very similar in that each night of the week will have its own programming. More importantly, Miami and D.C. will be similar in that we will always offer a luxury product at an affordable price. D.C. is different in that we will actually have three very distinct areas. We have the main bar, the VIP area, and the rooftop terrace. What’s your secret to a successful nightspot? It’s really no secret what we offer at MOVA. The secret to a successful nightspot is all in the ingredients, and we only use and accept the best. We get our mixers and fruit from local purveyors and we make every drink as it is ordered. The fruit is muddled right before our customers’ eyes. That paired with the fact that we offer fantastic service is really what separates us as a lounge and why we have been successful in both Miami and D.C. You’re a great host. How often will you be traveling back and forth to the two MOVAs? We recently brought Chip Arndt on board as our director of operations, and both he and I will be traveling back and forth between Miami and D.C., so one of us will always be at the other location. You can think of Chip as another version of me, just a little taller! What’s your favorite night to go out? I can’t say that I have a favorite night to go out. One of the things I appreciate about both Miami and D.C. is that there is something to do every single night of the week. MOVA is a beautiful contemporary smoke-free lounge. Will the MOVA in D.C. also be smoke free? Why did you decide to make your bars smoke free (a decision which I applaud)? When we first opened Halo, which became MOVA, we realized on the second day of doing business that our customers really do appreciate the high quality ingredients of our drinks and the crisp, chic atmosphere they

were cocktailing in. We didn’t want to fog up that experience with second hand smoke. It just didn’t fit into our brand statement. We have always been focused on creating a “green” space. At first, we thought there would be a backlash, but the opposite happened in fact. People really appreciated the fact that they could go out, enjoy a great drink, and not go home smelling like an ashtray. How much do you participate in the design of your bars? The design of both Miami and D.C. was a team effort, but I am very, very involved in the design of my lounges. Before the first brush stroked the wall, my team of architects and I would take pictures of light fixtures, bathrooms, bars, bar stools, and everything in between to get ideas on how we wanted to design the lounge. As a group, we have hand selected every design element in each space. You’re very active in the gay community. What are some of the events and organizations in which you currently participate? I currently serve as the chair of the Miami Beach Gay Pride Board. This year’s Pride is going to be even bigger and better. We are well ahead of our past fundraising goals and have grown our budget to include a major headliner. This year, Pride will grow from 40,000 people last year to approximately 60,000! It’s going to be huge! Both MOVA locations will always serve as a local town hall for political leaders and community organizations. We have worked with everyone from SAVE Dade, The Task Force, Equality Florida, Care Resource, and many other organizations to help raise funds for each and every one of their important causes. At MOVA, the community is a big part of who we are as a business. Anything you’d like to say to the community? First off, I want to make sure everyone knows that we do not take our customers for granted. I would like to thank the Miami and D.C. communities for continually supporting MOVA. We have always done our best to not only serve high quality cocktails at an affordable price, but to also provide the community with a place to call home.

There would be no other appropriate way to begin without saying - all the wrong people are picky about all the wrong damn things. Let’s be honest and avoid sugarcoating. We live in a community where beauty reigns supreme and all else is irrelevant. If it doesn’t ooze sex, masculinity, muscularity, athleticism, and - wait, why do I sound like an Adam4Adam profile? By whose standards are gay men attractive and why have the adjectives above become everyone’s “gay standard?” While it all sounds nice, and while it’s natural for a gay man to be attracted to a “man’s man,” since when was “discreet, MASC, muscular, no fats no fems, ddf” a type and how unrealistic of a “type” when half these big bricks walking around here are gayer than a tea dance in Key West? Discreet? Do I really need to go there? Let’s not elaborate on how many men you, your friend, his friend, his boyfriend, his ex-boyfriend, his new boyfriend’s cousin, and his grandpa all have in common and have all had sex with multiple times. There is no such thing as discreet. It’s discreet if you make very little noise during your session, but other than that - it’ll be leaked like a bad press release in less than 24 hours - I hope your ass was clean. Masculine - anyone can be “masculine” if they look the part. It seems muscular and masculine have either become the same thing, or gay men don’t know which is which. Muscular does not equal masculine, because everyone knows the bigger the man, the bigger the bottom, and the higher the squeals - Mariah Carey squeals at that. I don’t know about you “ladies” but I fake masculine pretty damn well to get in where I need to, and men swear I’m the real thing. Great pecs, a ton of tattoos, and Barry White’s voice (which can be turned off just as quickly as it’s turned on) will fool even the biggest “jock.” I don’t even know why everyone throws around “jock” so lightly. Dancing at Score topless does not make you a jock, it makes you a circuit queen - and very few of you can even name a professional sports team so let’s stop abusing that word. The only jock any of you know is a jock strap, so move along… DDF - I don’t think I need to throw around statistics nor do I need to expand on the excessive drug use in our community but “disease AND drug free” has somehow reassured a great number of men that the man who is advertising this is clean as a whistle and won’t even so much as touch an aspirin - lies. “Please be disease and drug free - as I am” is my fave. How will I know you’re clean unless you have your test results laminated on the wall, and how will I know your’re drug free unless I give you a piss cup or draw blood - really? DDF is irrelevant unless you have proof, so stop using that acronym as a confirmation because in many cases it is far from a genuine one. You can’t fake “sober” like you can fake masculine especially if you arrive at a man’s house and he’s “bright eyed and bushy tailed” - feeling grand and it’s damn nearly 7a.m. Muscular - anyone can pay for muscles; they aren’t expensive imported from Mexico. Ask the next gentlemen you see working out in the gym with no neck and ridiculous vascularity how he got so big, and listen to his basic workout regime ideal for your average soccer mom. WIRE COVER: THE SECRETS FOR A SPECTACULAR MODEL’S BODY

Wire Magazine’s readers love your photography. Is there anything new you want to share with them about the direction of your work in 2012? It’s such a pleasure to work with Wire Magazine. My boyfriend Abel Cruz and I are definitely looking to switch things up in 2012. We are currently working on some campaigns that are about to surface which will definitely take our work in a different direction. I certainly want to continue working with small guys starting out and continue doing my one-on-one work with local models and artists. Do you have any new plans for 2012? I plan to finally publish my first book in 2012. For a long time I was unsure about whether this would happen or not, but it’s such a dream of mine. I think it’s about time I treat myself and honor these models. It’s a financial risk but one I have to take. I would feel so accomplished. Can’t wait! What are you looking forward to the most this year? I’m really excited about the changes Abel and I are making to take our company Photo Studio Miami to another level. It’s only January and we are already booked for the first three months. That’s amazing. We are finally working on an interactive blog and have a team of people working behind the scenes doing video documentaries of our shoots and there’s even talk of an online magazine. My New Year’s resolution is to make more time for the people I love and who matter most. Sometimes I drown myself in my projects and get lost in the creative process. Then, between traveling and deadlines, I forget to do the simple things that I should always make time for, like eating at Denny’s with my two brothers that I love, having coffee with my amazing mom, or spending the day with my boyfriend of 14 years doing absolutely nothing but just acting silly and talking about our dreams. There are just certain things that should never take priority over those people who have real estate in my heart. It is because of their love and support that I am where I am today. WIRE COVER: THE SECRETS FOR A SPECTACULAR MODEL’S BODY

Here is a quick look into John Pizzo’s secret for having a magnificent body. You have a beautiful body. How do you stay in shape? Is it your workouts? Is it your diet? Thanks for the very kind words! For me, staying in shape is a lifestyle. I’ve always had a strong interest in fitness and nutrition and it’s allowed me to look they way I do, and, more importantly, to feel healthy. Staying in shape is certainly a combination of training and dieting. Many people don’t realize that proper nutrition is half the battle. Dieting is especially important if you have a short-term goal such as trimming down for the summer or reaching a certain weight goal. You can’t get great abs just by doing a thousand crunches yet making no changes to your diet. How long have you been modeling? What’s your favorite aspect of modeling? It’s funny, I’ve never really considered myself a “model” because I’ve only ever done it as a hobby, and whenever I’ve been fortunate enough to get modeling offers. I’m a chemical engineer, and it’s often tough to balance a full-time job with modeling and training. My first photo shoot was a little over five years ago. I love the rush you get when doing a photo shoot. And it’s very rewarding to see your hard work captured on film. It’s also a huge plus when you work with a great photographer like Jorge Freire. Jorge has amazing talent with a camera, and he’s as nice and down-to-earth as you could ask for. How much time do you dedicate to fitness? What keeps you motivated? I weight-train five days a week. I incorporate anywhere from three to five days of A.M. cardio. I work out my abs for ten to fifteen minutes after every workout. Training is a huge stress reliever for me, and it’s my “me time” after a long workday, so it’s not difficult to stay motivated. It’s the part of the day that I look forward to most, and I get frustrated when I can’t make it to the gym. Of course, FEELING healthy from training and proper diet is a huge motivation as well.

We are sure you get hit on by a lot of guys, what’s your usual response? I’m always humbled and very appreciative of any compliment or positive attention that I get. So my response is always a heart-felt “thank you” and usually a big goofy smile. It’s pretty obvious that you have a perfect ass. What’s your secret? Ha ha! I get that a lot. Often it’s the first thing that gets noticed, and I joke around by saying “Hey, my face is up here!” I have to admit that working out legs is not my favorite, but they grow quickly when I train them hard enough. Squats are great for glutes. I also split my leg routine and train them twice a week, so as to devote enough attention to the various leg muscles. Legs make up about 50% of the body’s muscles, and they should be respected as such in the gym. If you train legs hard enough your whole body grows! Lastly, many of our readers’ New Year’s resolution is to get in shape and try to look half as good as you. How should they start? Any tips you’d care to share? Use your gym membership, and use it regularly! It’s very easy to skip the gym once, or twice... but that can also easily lead to just GOING once or twice. When you’re at the gym, focus on your fitness goals and don’t get sucked into socializing with people around you (there’s a time and place for that outside the gym). Get a workout partner for motivation. Find a good trainer in order to give you that extra motivation. Make sure your diet is in-line with what your fitness goals are (a good trainer can help you with this as well). Get plenty of sleep because the body grows when you’re resting.

Margaret Hilda Thatcher, The Baroness Thatcher, the longest- serving British Prime Minister of the twentieth century and the first woman to hold that office, has finally arrived. Meryl Streep is playing her in a new film, The Iron Lady, which opens this weekend. In the UK, Thatcher is still a lightning rod for controversy more than two decades after she resigned as PM. But Phyllida Lloyd’s biopic sidesteps controversy and airbrushes history, making The Iron Lady an object of devotion that might well have been titled LOVING MAGGIE. Lloyd and screenwriter Abi Morgan make one of the most hated political figures of her day lovable by fading up on Thatcher today, in her mid-eighties, enfeebled, yearning for her deceased husband Denis, flashing back on events in her life. This Thatcher isn’t the fire-breathing politico of the 1980s – she’s a dear old lady, lost in her memories, rapidly losing touch.

Much is made of her shoes, her frocks, her handbags. By the time Mrs.Thatcher decides to make a run for the leadership of the Conservative Party, we’re right there with her. And why not? Thatcher’s tough-love rhetoric, removed from its historical context, sounds like common sense and it’s hard to resist cheering for Thatcher the lady underdog. Once Thatcher becomes Prime Minister, The Iron Lady becomes a bit of a pageant as Thatcher perseveres in the face of economic and social unrest, terrorism and war. The major events of a decade of British history become a series of diva moments, climaxing with an operatic leave-taking from Number 10 Downing Street, played out in slo-mo and strewn with rose petals. It is to die for. Meryl Streep is also to die for, as always. Streep is a superb actress but her appeal transcends mere acting. She’s a wizard of empathy, a diva of delight. It’s a good thing that she chooses to use her powers for good, or at least for reasonably amusing entertainments like The Iron Lady. More challenging English-accented fare can be had at National Theatre Live, debuting this weekend at its exclusive Miami venue, the Coral Gables Art Cinema. First in this series of simulcast performances from London’s National Theatre: Collaborators, a play by John Hodge, screenwriter of Trainspotting. One patron buying tickets for Hodge’s dark comedy had tried to see the play in London but couldn’t get seats there.

Congratulations to power music couple, Jay-Z and Beyoncé, on the birth of their best collaboration yet: their daughter, Blue Ivy Carter! A 7-pound Blue came into the world on Saturday, January 7th in New York City. To celebrate the latest addition to their family, Daddy Jay released a new song on his social network, Life + Times, dedicated to his new baby girl. The rap track called “Glory” not only expresses Jay’s excitement and joy for his newfound fatherhood, it also features daddy’s little girl herself, making her the youngest person ever to be featured on a rap song. The most surprising part about the track is Jay’s confession of previously failed pregnancies. Lyrics like “Last time the miscarriage was so tragic / We was afraid you’d disappear” and “All the pain of the last time / I prayed so hard it was the last time” reveal a more personal struggle the couple went through while trying to start a family. Could this mean Jay-Z’s new bundle of joy is going to soften his style a bit? We’ll just have to wait and see. As for how baby B got her unusual name, nothing’s official yet. However, the word on cyberspace is that “Blue” was inspired by daddy’s “Blueprint” albums while “Ivy” stems from the Roman number IV, Mama B’s favorite number. Speaking of making babies - the Prince of passion, Robin Thicke, is back with a brand new collection of sexy grooves set to get beds rockin’ and headboards knockin.’ On his fifth album, ‘Love After War,’ the smokin’ hot crooner takes us from the bedroom to the backroom with tracks inspired by R&B, classic Motown and jazz. He even sprinkles a little Latin flavor into the mix to spice things up. The 17-track seduction begins with the Marvin Gaye-styled showstopper “An Angel On Each Arm” and closes with the jazzy R&B slow-jam “What Would I Be.” What happens in between is a delicious mix of romance and angst wrapped in Robin’s velvety vocals. Even the Lil Wayne collaboration “Pretty Lil Heart” goes down smoother than a lubed-up Barry White tune.

Some of my faves are the 60s-inspired “I’m An Animal,” “Tears On My Tuxedo” and the title track. Although practically invisible to the pop charts, this singer/songwriter/composer has become legendary for delivering some of the most beautifully original music of our generation. As with his past projects, I don’t expect any of these tracks to make the mainstream charts. But then again you can’t take a system that celebrates excessive use of auto-tune too seriously. So next time you’re planning a romantic rendezvous, cook dinner, buy flowers and don’t forget to bring Robin. Best three-way ever! A while ago I was driving home from Publix in the Downtown Brickell area and noticed that a new Irish pub was being built on First Avenue. As a Harvard boy who used to love Cambridge pubs and good beer, I couldn’t wait until the place opened to check it out. On Tuesday I went to The Lucky Clover Irish Pub to sample their Executive Lunch Specials menu. Let’s just say Jesse and I were blown away by Downtown Brickell’s hottest new destination for dining, drinking, and entertainment. This watering hole reminds me of the best pubs I have visited in both the U.S. and Europe. The place is absolutely stunning, with a décor that you must see to understand what I mean. It turns out The Lucky Clover has been packed nightly since it opened less than a month ago, with locals and tourists alike enjoying its amazing décor, delicious cuisine, spacious bars, great music, and a sports bar vibe. Now they are also offering a mouth-watering lunch menu with a broad selection of dishes for only $9.99, including a soda or iced tea. I had a truly scrumptious Chicken Paella prepared fresh to order with a traditional Spanish recipe that reminded me of the best Paella’s I enjoyed while working in Spain – very impressive.
