POST MODERN POLITICS AGONY AND IRONY

BY MICHAEL W. SASSER

Even with Florida unemployment coming down slightly of late, the Sunshine State remains in the economic doldrums. Like most people in most states, it seems like Floridians are holding on as long as possible in the hopes that the national and global economies turn around and haul everyone back headed in the right direction. Otherwise, is there an end in sight? It’s a tough position to be in. However, surveying everything else going on around the country, it’s occurred to me of late that there might be a white-hatted cowboy on the way in to save the day. Or at least make a temporary improvement upon which hopefully economic recovery can become a reality. It’s politics. Yes, that’s right. Politics. I am not sure if it qualifies as irony or just as something utterly nauseating. But in 2012 it might be politics that drives Florida’s course correction. And no, it has nothing to do with public policy or partisanship or any candidate or candidates. The sport of politics might be the important arbiter of change. I am, of course, talking about political campaigns and the upward of $2 trillion-plus that will be spent in the presidential campaign alone. Well ahead of the eventual brawl in the finals there is the Republican primary, which looks like it might bring a cash inflow at a time Florida needs it. The GOP is on its way to Florida for the shiny new primary and with Florida Republicans still undecided, you can bet that there is going to be cash for candidates coming across the border with its own driver. Whoever remains in contention and financed will be compelled to make a stand in Florida. Candidates’ campaigns and powerful third party organizations and special interests are likely to pour unprecedented funds into Florida. And then later in the year, the finals contest will arrive and bring with it the wealthiest campaign machine the world has ever seen – a trillionplus from the president in order to keep his job. You can bet that with Florida being arguably one of the hottest contested battleground states, the White House folks will want to put a few dollars into every potential voter’s pocket. It’s possibly ironic that political campaigns might impact positively on Florida’s economy since politicians are the ones responsible for the economic downturn in the first place. The sub-prime mortgage disaster, the driver of the economic collapse, was a result of policy that saw nothing wrong with mandating that banks give mortgages to people who had no ability to pay them. That was a political decision made to … what else … pander for votes. Of course, politics then confounded the problem and drove disaster home. Politics was why Washington responded to an economic crisis by funding public sector employee unions and wacky but politically connected piein-the-sky ventures. Politics is why healthcare costs are up, why the dollar is devalued and why access to capital is down. Politics is why businesses are holding onto cash. Politics is why rampant inflation is dooming the American family. And politics is most certainly the politicians being there with a straight face to tell us that there is zero inflation. So, yeah, I guess that political campaigns being one of the few bright spots economically in the months ahead qualifies as ironic. Utterly nauseating? Yes, that too. --Author and journalist Michael W. Sasser’s commentary on all things political appears exclusively in Wire Magazine. WIRED ON: MENTAL HEALTH MAKE 2012 YOUR BEST YEAR EVER I help gay men, lesbians, and bisexuals find happiness and true fulfillment in their lives and their relationships. Gays and bisexuals often have a hard time balancing their lives or getting certain needs met because of societal, cultural, or religious expectations that plague them throughout their lifetime.

4.Economic: We need to feel financially secure and know that we have a roof over our head, are able to pay the bills, and do not have to worry about where our next meal will come from.

5.Social: Humans have a natural need to feel connected to other people. When that need is disrupted and we end up Have you ever had the best intentions feeling disconnected, other feelings may of getting something done, only to find be triggered leaving us anxious and deyourself failing? It’s important to set 7.Spiritual: For some this need is met reasonable, clear objectives. The possibilities are endless. What makes us feel good about ourselves is not only the achievement of our 8.Self: The most important relationship goals, but the quality of our experience we will ever have is our relationship with while working toward them. We largely ourselves. Nurturing and cultivating this have a choice as to whether that experirelationship is what I am talking about ence is positive or negative. here. Exploring ways to motivate yourself, such as changing your routine, starting new friendships, working out with a partner, or even changing jobs, provide you with mental stimulation to get going. Since reaching one goal often leads to the setting of the next, it’s important to have fun and feel good about yourself along the way. Happiness and fulfillment come from a balanced life in which certain needs are met consistently and in healthy ways. There are ten primary areas of human need that determine a healthy, balanced life: 1.Work/professional: Having an occupation that both supports us financially, stimulates us, and fosters our growth as contributors to society is important to most people.

9.Learning: Most of us have a need to learn about the world around us and to grow as human beings. Travel, taking a class, furthering one’s career, or simply being curious, are ways we stretch and grow. 10.Play: Humans need to have fun! Vacations are not a luxury. Our culture places too little emphasis on the need for relaxation and enjoyment. We need time off in order to rest and recharge, otherwise we cannot be successful and productive. Even animals play. In 2012, I invite you to explore what makes your life balanced.
