COVID-19 continues to be an ominous presence in our daily lives, and governors and mayors are grappling with how best to safely reopen our public spaces, beaches and businesses. This is not an easy decision, nor one that should be rushed or taken lightly. Too many of our fellow Americans have died from a very contagious and deadly COVID-19 virus, so prevention measures, social distancing, face masks, testing and contact tracing will be the key to saving people’s lives. Unfortunately, we have all witnessed how a loud minority is pushing to re-open quickly, and how thousands of people are purposely and selfishly ignoring social distancing measures and refusing to wear masks. We see these people on the news, in our re-opened parks and walking around in our neighborhoods. I have personally encountered many of them when going for a walk in my Brickell neighborhood to stretch out my aching back – bothering me from limited movement staying at home. I wear a mask and glasses and make sure to practice social distancing, but many people disregard both and just don’t care. I have come to the sad conclusion that many more people will die from COVID-19 because of the irresponsibility and carelessness of others. These people will continue to put our lives in danger, so it is up to each one of us to protect ourselves and our families. I will definitely continue to practice social distancing and wear a mask in public, and so will all my family in Costa Rica. None of us wants to be infected with COVID-19 and risk losing our lives.
