FOREVER VIGILANT WORLD AIDS DAY 2015
However, those living with HIV in the U.S. and other Western nations are just a single snapshot of the reality of HIV/AIDS around the world. Furthermore, statistics point out that HIV continues to spread at an alarming rate even in the U.S.; today it is a particular challenge for young people, people of color and those without access to healthcare (many of whom are undiagnosed); and South Florida is an epicenter for this epidemic. In 2013, 23 percent of HIV infections were among those 20-29, as compared to 20 percent in 2003. HIV infections are much more common among men who have sex with men (MSM); MSM as a risk factor accounted for 29 percent of HIV infections in 2003, and 47 percent in 2013. Women have remained steady, although women of color are relatively less likely to seek treatment for their HIV, thus increasing the likelihood that they will develop AIDS – this accounts for the increasing percentage of AIDS cases with heterosexual contact identified as the risk factor. Racial and ethnic demographics remain steady, if troubling: HIV/AIDS disproportionately impacts communities of color, including Black/African Americans and Hispanics. Global statistics are even more alarming. Globally, there are an estimated 34 million people who have the virus. Despite the virus only being identified in 1984, more than 35 million people have died of HIV or AIDS, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history. In many nations, particularly in Africa, access to live-preserving medicines is extremely limited and the stigma is vastly greater than in the West. Entire generations in many of these nations are struggling to survive without access even to basic healthcare, much less the often-costly treatments for HIV/AIDS.

So, while Americans enjoy a tremendously improved environment when it comes to living with HIV, the same is not true elsewhere in the ever-shrinking world. That's where World AIDS Day comes in. World AIDS Day is held on the December 1 each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV/AIDS, show their support for people living with HIV/AIDS and to commemorate people who have died. World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day, held for the first time in 1988. Three ideas on how anyone can observe World AIDS Day, and help promote the cause of awareness, testing and treatment come from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services: • Encourage people to get tested for HIV. Let them know that some health clinics offer free HIV testing. • Talk to parents about teaching their kids the basics of safe sex. • Wear a red ribbon, the symbol of HIV awareness and support. Tell people why you are wearing it. There are other ways to support the cause, as well. Just attending White Party helps fund Care Resource and its programs for combating HIV/AIDS. Care Resource and countless other organizations are in need of financial and volunteering support. As the globe prepares for World AIDS Day, it's very important to remember the scope of the epidemic, the lives it has taken and the millions of people around the world it impacts and will continue to affect until a cure is found.

hese days, it is all too easy for some in the U.S. to become blasé about the global battle against HIV/AIDS. After all, the advent of new medicines has made HIV a chronic condition, but not the virtual death sentence it once was. Today, many in the West are effectively living "normal" lives as HIV positive people. With better treatments, much of the stigma has receded. Furthermore, as time rolls inevitably on and new generations come of age, many younger people have no personal memories of the 1980s when AIDS was the plague of its time – decimating the gay community.

ARE YOU READY FOR PrEP 101
PrEP Basics
1
PIL
PrEP can help prevent you from getting HIV if you are exposed to the virus
PrEP is an HIV prevention option that works by taking one pill every day
L
ILY
PrEP stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis
The word “prophylaxis” means to prevent or control the spread of an infection or disease
DA
How Does It Work?
Some of the same medicines prescribed for the treatment of HIV can also be prescribed for its prevention
SID E EF FE CT S
In several studies of PrEP, the risk of getting HIV infection was much lower — up to 92% lower — for those who took the medicines consistently than for those who didn’t take the pill WITH MEDICINE
WITHOUT MEDICINE
92% LOWER RISK
When taken every day, PrEP can provide a high level of protection against HIV, and is even more effective when it is combined with condoms and other prevention tools
People who use PrEP must take the medicine every day and return to their health care provider every 3 months for follow-up and prescription refills
Some people in clinical studies of PrEP had early side effects such as an upset stomach or loss of appetite, but these were mild and usually went away in the first month. Some people also had a mild headache. No serious side effects were observed. You should tell your health care provider if these or other symptoms become severe or do not go away.

If PrEP is a good option for you, your health care provider will give you a prescription
How Do I Pay for PrEP? PrEP is covered by most insurance programs
If you do not have insurance, your health care provider can direct you to medication assistance programs that may help pay for PrEP
