Most Americans by now are well aware of the advances made by the LGBT community, and on its behalf, in the areas of marriage equality and general acceptance in the rich tapestry that makes up life in the United States.
Fewer people are perhaps aware that, while much of the world might still be less than welcoming – and even openly hostile – to both its own LGBT citizens and visitors, progress is still being made in places all over the globe. As demonstrated by every summer's various Pride festivities in even the most far-flung parts of the globe, more and more LGBT people are making their presence known and pursuing justice and equality. Pride is hardly limited to the United States or even to the West. Voters in Ireland just approved gay marriage in a national referendum with over 61% of people voting yes.
Pride observances around the world also present travelers the opportunity to glimpse the rich diversity of cultures while celebrating a distinct commonality.
